I was just looking at this script, it seems to be a persistent running one, and was wondering if I could put it in the back without using the regular terminal emulator
One thing at a time:
First let's give you a user based bin folder:
cd ~/ && mkdir bin
You want to use crontab. Let's start with something really simple:
* * * * * touch /tmp/testing.txt
Okay, so that works
Now let's try running a script that does the same
* * * * * /home/username/bin/to...
The question asks "How do I upgrade from 12.10 to something modern since it's end of life do-release-upgrade doesn't work" and the duplicate is "I want to stay with this end of life version of ubuntu, how do I install software from an exotic repository"
The answer to the "duplicate" doesn't help with the original question at all. Ashish seems to be asking a legitimate (and difficult to answer) question.
I have a small arm box, that didn't have a trusty image, and didn't properly upgrade, I just changed the sources to say "trusty" and did dist-upgrade, there are certain situations, but we need details
@JohnBaber lets do this. Ask a question with the exact error everything is throwing, the contents of your sources.list and the output of apt-cache policy libc6
It sounds like you're trying to do something against what you're supposed to do. Pull out any non-mainline stuff. Increment your release and dist-upgrade one at a time until you hit LTS. Then you can leapfrog. Going backwards is bad. You're bound to paint yourself in to a corner and build a worse problem than you started with...
So, it's not a dupe because you created a corner case impossible to arrive at by using things the way you're supposed to and now you want it not to be a dupe? or it's solved now?

doesn't matter if a package is installed. if you install blarg_i_want_to_waste_time.deb and don't purge the package despite someone saying purge your ppas, you built your problem.
A bit late to the party but I found this question when looking for an answer and now I have my own answer to share.
I believe you can do this via the mysterious world of apt_preferences.
Try making a file called /tmp/a_p (or whatever) like so...

@JohnBaber if you continue to meddling you could cripple your system or have some weird cruft out the upgrade process that can cause problems later, and everything could be avoided if you just backup/reinstall

I've been reading about how elements with the float attribute do not have their height accounted for. Therefore, I should use clear:both right before the end of the parent div so that it will stretch over the entire inner div.
You can see on This Page that the div with the id full-height-templat...
I'm really stupid, and I deleted the following file:

I did so attempting to do something about the following error message:

so, i just slicked my old BSD laptop to install windows so i could game on it a little. it's more powerful than my linux lappie despite being older and without a touchscreen... but it was my rock solid for a long time. now it's time to let it run a little again.
It has to do a full system restore, do an MD5 check, do a SHA-1 check, do a CRC-16 check, do a bcrypt check, ensure all system files pass file verification checks, ensure the registry is optimized, ensure the hard drive is fully defragmented, mine twelve bitcoins, and solve the Riemann hypothesis.
The two tags window-placement and window-management are essentially synonyms. Since it has only been used 7 times, window-placement should probably be deleted, especially since the description for window-management (used 82 times) is "the placement of application windows." I guess window-manageme...
I am trying to send email from a server. Testing on my local machine works fine but on my production Ubuntu server, the webserver fails when trying to send email.

Heres a doozy, I purchased a notebook from a rather shady computer company from a land really far away from where I live, and long story short I ended up with a used hp mini 5103 that had no OS installed, It seemed legit at the time. Once home and after installing ubuntu, (btw it looks great, ima...
I go there sometimes but I find the fastest gun in the west type answers annoying and the place is generally too aggressive for me. I don't enjoy it so much.
has anyone ever had the problem of your computer (according to htop) not swapping?
right now.. I am running high memory usage (close to 75-90%) at all times and it doesn't appear to be running anything through swap files
I had default swappiness of 60, and did a temporary swappiness of 80 to see if that would do anything, but wonder if that is why I have been locking up a lot lately
I'm running elementary OS Luna (based on Ubuntu 12.04) on which I've installed Okular as I consider it to be the best PDF reader even if it's meant primarily for KDE.
The issue is this, I need to use the terminal to tell Okular to open a file and then I want it to go back to the prompt. I've tri...
