Q: Delete tag 14.04.1

No TimeThe tag 14.04.1 seems useless, as there is already a 14.04 tag, and the questions involving the tag do not seem to be related to 14.04.1 but could be migrated to 14.04.

Q: Tag edits shall not be marked as regular edits

AbhimanyuEditing of tags shall not be marked as a regular edit. Because: An edit generally "activates" the question: increases its last active count, bumps it, etc. An edit tells that the original question might be modified. If I write a fine question, but it's edited (because of tags), then it gives ...

Q: Make numeric only/composed of just numbers tags that should only be created by moderators

BraiamEveryone knows I hate with burning passion version specific tags. The reasons are explained here and elsewhere, but that's not what I'm going to ask about. Today, I again removed the 14.04.1 for second occasion. Keeping this kind of tags, that literally breeds like rabbit, is not an easy task an...

Q: Is this screenshot uncool?

karelI recently added a wallpaper screenshot to my answer to Architecture - 32-bit handling 64-bit instructions which was intended to illustrate the last sentence of the answer. Now I'm worried that I might have gone off the rails, and perhaps I should delete the screenshot from the answer. Is this s...

Noooooooooo!!! Why do people love obsolete stuff? You may of well makes Trinity a official respin too. If you love GNOME 2 than try XFCE. You can make it look like it, and feels like it, has more features, and the most of all not obsolete.

@Andrew: I find gnome 3 horrific

@JourneymanGeek I love Gnome 3... just wish there would be more programs would support hover bars, or have a global menu.

I'm running kde
;p

@JourneymanGeek How do you like KDE 5?

(though, I'm on a fedora kick at the moment)
@Andrew: plasma?

6:43 AM
Yea

not tried it yet

@JourneymanGeek Do you run Intel Graphics?

@Andrew: hm.

Do you have a Intel CPU?

kinda
most of my systems don't need a gui

6:46 AM
Do you have a AMD, or Nvida card?

on my gaming box
(which is windows only)

Okay, Wait until 5.1 because their is a bad bug with graphics corruption on intel graphics
I like 5 but I don't want to play freeze tag with it.
@JourneymanGeek I like KDE Programs but I like GNOME as my Desktop.... My desktop look way out of place
@JourneymanGeek are you there?

yeah
well partially
watching a tested review ;p

@JourneymanGeek okay...
@JourneymanGeek can't they let GNOME 2 go, and switch to XFCE? XFCE is way better than MATE.

@Andrew: apparently not
or trinity

6:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek True

more so for desktop environments ;p

@JourneymanGeek I have use trinity it is worst than MATE... It is so obsolete, it even uses QT 3.

lol
I USED to have a computer it would be perfect for.

From 2005?

(alas, it broke)

6:56 AM
LOL

it was a PIII
had this big old lovely screen tho
(also, I have a mouse from 2001 on one of my systems)

We can't unite on one DE because of two mean reasons: lightweight/heavyweight, and GTK or QT. The third would be simableness, and featurefullness.

@Andrew: and in many ways forking is just in the linux culture

Unless we use something like how the Linux Kernel works.
Yea, that is why I use Linux because it has a lot of freedoms, that MS don't allow you to have.

lol
I run linux cause there's shiny stuff I need ;p

7:00 AM
I do think that there should be one DE, and it would be basically a shell. And you develop plugins on it, and make it your own.

meh.
I like choice

or have teams do it

I currently have 2 distros, a few non gui systems, 2 or 3 different DEs, 2 OSes...
maybe 3.

@JourneymanGeek The only thing that is keeping me from using KDE is, they have no thing like the Activities menu which I love.
@JourneymanGeek With DE, I want to see some uniqueness with them... They all have the some layout, and feel other than Gnome and Unity, and a few minor ones.
I want to see one Desktop, non of these menus like Actvities... or Kickoff
@JourneymanGeek I see menus as 2th desktops.
@JourneymanGeek On Workspace one you have your desktop with some widgets, on desktop two you have your window group 1... until like 5 when you have a manager for them and for the window groups too.
@JourneymanGeek I see WIndows groups how BeOS deal with them like how you can tab than. A title WM, so there should be none entry space.
@JourneymanGeek do you agreed with me.

You don't need to @ me every line 0_0
@Andrew: I tend to be a one window guy
I'm not a huge fan of tabs for everything tho

7:10 AM
It is just an idea... Or have a button for the sub-group and you can see every window in it and you can pick samellerly to GNOME window activities section.
Just joking.

Why Environment variables named only with CAPITAL letter with underscore (_) ?

Oli
9:21 AM
@Pandya Capitals by convention, underscores by syntactical requirement.
That is to say you can have a valid variable called variable_a, or VariableA but variable a and variable-a are invalid.

@Oli Ok.

@OLI have an upvote on the man page question :=D

Q: I think I messed up my Apache on Webmin

rufflesOk, so I'm pretty new to webmin and have been playing around with configuring apache. I did the --purge command ...

4:34 PM
yay for extra days off... sad i have to wash clothes though

hi @hbdgaf what did you want the other day?

@Mateo i was wondering what other neat features you might enjoy in a torrent client. i'm adding an RSS catcher to my torrent-widget. i might add some ui bits, but first it's a catch-all auto-add as paused to test.

hm, not sure
maybe some kind of icon capture - depending on contents, either display a picture/screen from the content?

i already added file secwentials, a sidebar widget, and interacting with transmission as a service. i want to add an RSS catcher, since it seems to be missing from MOST free+OSS clients
@Mateo that could be sort of neat. once the rss catcher is done, i could use the screen from element for that... i'ld have to look in to search by hash to find a preview image that is appropriate for already existing or not from RSS stuff though
oh, the other thing that i want to add is per file complete notifications, e.g. "Lecture series 001, session 001 complete" as notify-osd/espeak

4:50 PM
yeah, that would be great, I always like adding the firefox osd plugin so it tells you when downloads are done

it's not about trying to re-invent transmission. it is about trying to make the default torrent app as feature complete as the azureus/vuze crap and ktorrent or whatever. we shouldn't get a default installed inferior app with fewer features (not that i want vuze by default... just saying)

one thing, that I seem to do is once a download is done - I then seem to move the content to other folders such as docs/music/video then the original is missing, do you think there is a way to make symlinks to content.

@Mateo there is. you could put in an inotify hook and check against folders inside a special torrent download folder instead of ~/Downloads
I'ld have to write an existing download migration tool then though

5:12 PM
maybe another project, but it would keep things seeding and where you want them to play, be picked up in the dash, open in players, ect.

i'm doing my best to avoid trying to interop with the dash. i just want it to work, not make some other bit of "i don't use this" look awesome.

hm, I guess the dash searches everything anyway, maybe I'm over thinking things

it might work, but canonical often doesn't follow links instead of loop-checking recursive linking problems, so... i just write it off as "not worried if it doesn't follow my link" see U1

Q: File not found: Beautiful Soup

john c.I am trying to run a program that I downloaded in Ubuntu latest version, but I continue getting an error everytime I try to run the program. It says: 'File Not Found: BeautifulSoup' So in order to attempt to fix this, I've downloaded the bs4 beautiful soup through the command line. I've tried ...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L you're doing it wrong. it depends on the old beautifulsoup package not bs4... and you're not removing the old import. i'm not answering any more awful U kwestions on UL

Q: Should we have 14.10 tag?

Nickolai LeschovWhen asking a question that touches upon the upcoming Ubuntu 14.10 version, I found that there's no 14.10 tag, so I have created one. Is it alright or should we only create a tag when the version is officially released? I think not, as I can well imagine people needing to seek answers before the ...

i do not disagree. if you have to ask if you should create a tag... don't do eet

I thought we had a Ubuntu 14 tag to gernalize all of 14
Damn it I need to make another EFI boot file for windows

I can't understand why, but gnome works better for my computer somehow

11:14 PM
@Mateo are you a command line aficionado?

@NoTime why's that? making me sound like these pictures: google.com/…

It's sort of pathetic when you keep dying with human players and keep winning with bots in l4d2
"I'll leave you to your noob tactics" ... cool. now i can win.

11:30 PM
@hbdgaf parse error... wat?
p2p?

I've been finding more griefers than players recently. So I sit at the starting line, defend myself, and wait for the griefs to kwit, then win with the bots

ah, that always have been a problem

Makes me want to hook up a debugger and find out a couple of things... just saying. ptrace god mode for the fu win
what's that? the tank spawned on your face? oh... that must suck... sort of thing

11:47 PM
@Mateo just was reading how you like to use command line. I was wondering... you were the only one on at the time.

I was wondering how to make an "alert script" for processes once they hit a certain CPU%

sounds cool

My computer freezes (with unity) when too much flash/shockwave appears in browser (firefox,chrome,chromium,iceweasel)

psutil and a glib event ueue could do that uite easily

like audible? maybe pc speaker beep?

notify osd would be cool
3
Q: Generate alert on high CPU usage

TarunAfter seeing a question here I want to have a configuration in my Ubuntu system so that if the cpu processing exceeds 90%, it gives a beep sound. Is this possible? Also, where else can this beep sound be used? Can it be used if the hard disk utilisation exceeds 80% ?

11:52 PM
great find

wat? psutil reports 0.0 cpu usage for all processes on iter.get_cpu

sorry hbdgaf I am not fluent in that language :)
I haven't used psutil before

it's python. psutil is a cross-platform supposed to be lib for writing system utilities. it failed in this case though

lets drop this here...

Q: What guidance should be given when edits are rejected?

Shog9I'm hoping to get rid of the "too minor" edit rejection reason, in favor of a more direct way of indicating edits that fail to significantly improve a post. We're also fixing to warn editors when their edits are rejected. Between the two of these changes, I'm thinking the other rejection reasons ...
