This --^
@Rinzwind No

tsk
NEXT TIME START WITH THAT >:-D
Now it is 17:00 so time for me mv /home/

@Rinzwind You mean mv pwd ~/ right? :D
@NathanOsman - Hi! Any ideas? askubuntu.com/questions/881255/…

That's a strange one.
Are you mounting any network drives?

3:05 PM
No. And the weird thing is that my laptop without an SSD and my desktop with an SSD BOTH hang on the GRUB purple screen for a while before the animation shows

If the kernel is reporting a three second boot, then either something with Grub or something very very early in the kernel is going wrong.

@NathanOsman In "Update 2" I state why I am 99% sure it's a GRUB issue

Out of curiosity, what happens when you boot in single user mode?

I've never done that before. How do I do that?

@AndroidDev most likely. Or some really weird deadlock with the CPU when the kernel is initializing.
@AndroidDev you'll have to edit the boot line in Grub. When the selected entry is highlighted, press "e" and add "single" to the end of the kernel line.

3:09 PM
@NathanOsman Okay, I'll report back in about 1 minute :)

I know those instructions are for Redhat, but it should be the same for Ubuntu.

@NathanOsman I'm back :)

From the time I hit F10 in GRUB to the time the prompt showed up it was 13 seconds

Hmmm... 13 seconds was about the time from when you press enter to the login prompt, right (in multi-user mode)?

@AndroidDev Do you have LXD installed ?

@cl-netbox that shouldn't affect grub though...
Xen, on the other hand...

3:16 PM
@NathanOsman With LXD installed and in use my machine needed about double the time to boot than without.

@NathanOsman No multiuser mode was 20 seconds...

@cl-netbox but this is happening very early in the boot process.
Possibly even before the Grub handoff.
@AndroidDev that's strange... so then the kernel is partly responsible for the delay?

@NathanOsman One thing, the 13 seconds I just gave you was with the Xorg driver, let me switch back to the Nvidia one to keep the times consistent

Yeah, so I compiled a special version of FFMPEG yesterday with NVEC support, but then when I rebooted I got a login loop! So I switched to the Xorg driver and haven't reloaded the Nvidia one. Additional drivers just loaded it, so let me reboot again and I'll report back :)

3:20 PM
I threw a bounty on the question to help.

@NathanOsman Thanks! So with the Nvidia driver it's still 13 seconds in single-user mode

So I think it's safe to rule out the video driver then.
At least for now.
I have to head to work now. I hope someone with intricate knowledge of Grub sees your question :)
I'll check in later.

@NathanOsman - Just to be clear, the multiuser mode takes 17 seconds to get to the login screen, and then another 3 seconds after I enter my password, so it's a total of 20 seconds
I guess I need to edit that into my question
To make it clearer

user136984
@terdon The who, how or what is not important to me here. Only if it is normal for clouds to form like this.

Yes.
No science needed, just spend a couple of hours staring at the sky.

user136984
3:33 PM
Ok, then I will probably dismiss the conspiracy theory. Thank you, that's all I wanted to hear.

user136984
:)

Or 10 minutes, actually, clouds form and dissolve pretty quickly.

Q: What is the apt equivalent to these dselect commands?

ithurtswhenIPI'm reading a tutorial on backing up packages from one Ubuntu/Debian server and restoring to another (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/ubuntu-and-debian-package-management-essentials#transferring-package-lists-between-systems) that uses dselect as part of the process. However, w...

user136984
@terdon: Apparently though places do make cloud cover increase... So even if there is nothing sinister going on, they do cause it, and it's not very nice.

user136984
Well, that's what the answer on Skeptics says anyway. Apparently contrails do form into a lot of clouds of a certain type, although they do mostly disappear quickly too.

3:52 PM
Yeah, they'll release particles that can serve as nuclei for vapor condensation, presumably. I haven't seen the answer.
But that's how clouds are formed.
So spake my high school science teacher, anyway, I'm a biologist, what do I know about clouds?
Yes, spake, I'll go with spake.

@AndroidDev What SSD do you have and does sata 3 support that?

user136984
4:05 PM
@Zanna: Baaaa

a sheep?

user136984
Yes

user136984
How did you guess?

@Zanna I will ping you once and only once but isn't unity basically like macOS(I know they are changing it). AppExpose is double click dock icon and launchpad equals the windows key application on ubuntu

user136984
:P

4:07 PM
@William I don't use Unity... but I don't mind if you ping me :)

I liked Unity :(

it's not dead!

Eventually support will end though

user136984
@William: I suspect that someone in the community will keep it going.

there's a fork...
or two or three
personally I prefer a spoon...

4:09 PM
and what about ubuntu phones there forked also I assume?

isn't there a Question on the site about that?

probably
I'm just making a point
forks are rarely as good as the original
especially when the originals had millions of dollars behind them

I have like 5 tabs open of stuff to vote on tomorrow
maybe I should quit AU for the day :/

BYE!!!

that was a maybe...

4:31 PM
bye >:

alright then I'm off, I know when I'm not wanted :P *flounces*

4:50 PM
liar!

lol

@William Samsung 850 Pro and yes my motherboard supports SATA 3

5:26 PM
@AndroidDev that might be the read speed but what about write sped

5:39 PM
Booooooooo. Now that feels good.

Jos
6:04 PM
@JacobVlijm wait, what fix?
ah the ownership of .config fix?

sudo chown -R --reference="$HOME" ~/.config

Jos
OK.

nice

That's in the "note" in the linked post.
:)

Jos
Better now?

6:08 PM
@Jos Thanks! removed my comments :)

Jos
Good. Next question.

What question?
^ That's a question.
(the next one)

Jos
This interesting Hungarian problem caught my eye: askubuntu.com/questions/908864/…
With its not very descriptive title

I find no such package
or command

Jos
@Zanna From Googling I understand that it is an outdated and not very important package
And if it turns out to be important, it will not let itself be removed without some kicking and screaming.

6:28 PM
I can't understand this post at all
@Jos ah :)

Jos
Looks like this person is asking for a clipboard manager

yeah

I have yet to figure out why Google has an official material icon for a pregnant woman, but has nothing for presentation

Jos
@Zanna No wait, he wants to execute a script that includes the contents of the standard clipboard.
@JacobVlijm can you access the contents of the clipboard from a script? I would be surprised.

no you can't

6:36 PM
@TheWanderer o.O

they also have an Airplay icon o_O
am confoos

@Jos Not sure what you mean, sure you can get the clipboard content by a script.

clipboards should be encrypted :P

I did him a suggestion though, but not sure if it is what he is looking for :)

Jos
This Michal wants to execute a script by pressing a function key, which contains the current contents of the clipboard.
@JacobVlijm says it's possible. @Rinzwind says it isn't.

6:39 PM
I am always right

Jos
sits back and sips wine

@JacobVlijm that by definition is wrong

Now you are wrong again
^ see, I am right

Jos
fetches another bottle

you need a case :+)
ok bbl. food and tv

6:41 PM
Why, I am not travelling :)

Jos
What is the trick to get the contents of the clipboard from a script Jacob?

xclip is an option, python has several options, I know there are more, but I never know what I know is my issue.

@William Write speed is about 500MB/s

Jos
"I never know what I know." Nice.

It's kind of true, my mind is extremely context- triggered. If the context changes, I know nothing about what I am not doing at this moment. That is: apart from random crap popping up :)

Jos
@Zanna what are you referring to?

it's the same for me except the context triggering usually doesn't work either... my brain is full of lost treasure

Jos
Ah that was a link. Never mind.

Q: Are there best practices when it comes to promoting the Ask Ubuntu community?

Andrea LazzarottoOn May 7, 2017 I will take part in the fifth Italian Debian Community conference. The general "mood" of the conference is about discussing the Debian, Ubuntu and open source communities at large. Therefore I volunteered to hold a talk about Ask Ubuntu, with the purpose of spreading it. Are ther...

7:09 PM
@Zanna TBH as a non-native speaker I had a hard time getting used to "they" as the gender-neutral pronoun.

It's not the best. English is just a bit crap.

7:25 PM
Looks like Canada Post won. My package didn't come yesterday.
Hopefully it comes today.

1 hour later…
8:48 PM
hue
@Zanna just a tad

:)
later all xxx

See you later @Zanna

user136984
I am installing KDE Plasma now on my Arch installation to see what it's all about... Because I could never get Kubuntu to actually install in a VM due to the terrible installer they created for Kubuntu, or at least, the one I got was always really buggy.

user136984
But that's just the Ubuntu team, maybe the actual DE will be a better experience.

user136984
Well, we will see.

9:08 PM
Wat

user136984
Goodnight folks!

9:39 PM
