No surprise. The entire purpose of Facebook is tracking.

oh also pointless battery drain

They actually managed to crash dexopt when their app installed because they used too many methods.

Also, my package came. Y'know, the one where I bought 1,280 resistors.

> Facebook is one of the most feature-rich apps available for Android. With features like push notifications, news feed, and an embedded version of Facebook Messenger
yes, that's a valid excuse...

@Seth nice

I picked the G6

3:11 AM
@RobotHumans I tended to pick a combination of the S8 and G6. But I think I picked them all at least once lol.

@Seth I just liked how the E pictures looked. I didn't want out of focus backgrounds to be more in focus or over exposed rearview mirrors to taper it off for me. They just looked "right"
I think I picked C once
Currently carrying a shudders iphone, b/c someone gave it to me when I didn't have a phone

3:25 AM
@RobotHumans well it could have been a Windows phone.
I was stuck with one of those for a while.. One of the very first ones. Way better than nothing but no fun either.
Mother-in-law just asked that I delete something from Google results. Instead of explaining the Web, I opened F12 and deleted the DOM node 😎

A valuable lesson was still learned: don't trust screenshots.
Also, LibreOffice Calc is annoying. I select multiple rows with Ctrl and then try to cut them.

10:09 AM
Thank you @JacobVlijm, matter solved.
I didn't see the message button on your profile so came here to acknowledge

@katyasehgal Wow, was updating the firmware the solution?

No @JacobVlijm, I have the latest 21 10. I shut the laptop down yesterday, initiated it today, and also bought a new cable.
Could be the cable in my opinion.
Since you use H1, are there any tips while using it as a usb mic?

lol - cables are 99,9% of all issues.

@Takkat, even the earlier cable was brand new.
So there was no way to determine for me.

that is a strong argument in favour of another brand of cables - but indeed very hard to debug... ;)

10:18 AM
@katyasehgal I rarely use it as a usb mic. Only as an easy solution "on the road". For serious stuff I use m-audio mobilepre with high quality mics.

Also remembering @fossfreedom who had been very helpful last year or so.
@JacobVlijm that is very professional system.

@katyasehgal awesome, works really great.

10:59 AM
uhm I need help
my cursor stuck in a crosshair like shape and i can't click anything

it wants to take a screenshot haha

Have you tried restarting X? ;p

^

I can restart my pc but I'm running important stuff atm so

11:01 AM
or work out what's causing it and kill it

unload and reload the mouse/touchpad module?

the one above is my cursor, other is how KDE's cursor manager thingy considers it

press F5 on the desktop?

and how exactly do I get to desktop?

er... keyboard shortcut to switch to another "workspace"?

11:04 AM
Have you pressed the Esc button?

yes?

Did you also try right clicking?

yes
also middle clicking

(that looks kinda like the xkill cursor and you can get out of that with the right click)

also pressing ctrl shift alt etc
@Zanna I only have one workspace, argh, I should've added one just in case

11:05 AM
Sounds like you're going to have to wait until whatever you are running finishes. Sorry :/

I think I'll just save everything and restart

did you try unloading the module?

Hey guys, I am trying to find environment variables that corresponds to all the resources type used in a PBS manager.

I only know that PBS_ppn and PBS_NCPUS stores the value of the processor per node and the value of the CPU used in the parallel computation. However my host has 2 extra type of resources named. How to get the corresponding environment variables that stores the values of these resources that was specified when users write the PBS script?

@Secret What makes you think there are any? PBS variables can be set in the pbs script and read by the queue manager, they don't need to be environmental variables.

Uh, the context of my question is actually the following:

11:08 AM
@Secret Wait
Why isn't your question being asked on the main site where everyone can benefit?
And where we don't need to ask you for every bit of relevant info?

O sorry, I thought my question was short enough to do on chat. Posting on main site now

@Zanna nope, but restarted now. Thanks anyways :)

@Secret Thanks :)

11:24 AM
Question posted
hopefully not too lengthy...

Lengthy is good
Link?
@Secret Eeek! You're not going to do it manually! Just write a little script for it.

@Avery haha great, I was just trying to find a reliable way to identify the touchpad driver in use. I ended up with a correct but ridiculously long command

heh

for i in $(grep -ri driver /sys 2>/dev/null | cut -d '=' -f 2); do for j in /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/*; do k=$(basename "$j") && [[ "$i" == "${k%.ko}" ]] && echo "$i"; done; done

and it didn't return anything, heh

11:33 AM
You need root access

facepalm hahaha
no...

it uses libinput's drivers AFAIK

idk :)

@Zanna probably because I'm on arch

@Avery oh yeah, hopefully that :)

11:36 AM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy change your name to Seryozha

@terdon yeah but I don't want to look IN the file and find out the name of the file that contains the string
@terdon to reliably find only the touchpad/mouse driver in use

Ah.

it does work for me haha

@Zanna here's a shorter version:
grep -hriPo 'DRIVER=\K.+'   /sys 2>/dev/null | while read driver; do [ -e /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/"$driver".ko.gz ] && echo $driver; done

nice!
readable too
but doesn't find my driver...

11:41 AM
@Zanna I think yours are not compressed. Try with "$driver".ko instead of "$driver".ko.gz
Or just a wildcard:
    grep -hriPo 'DRIVER=\K.+'   /sys 2>/dev/null | while read driver; do [ -e /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/input/mouse/"$driver"* ] && echo $driver; done

oh yeah, got it (much faster)
pcregrep magic
:D

Actually, @Secret let's move this to a different room so we don't disrupt the main chat. Join me here please: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/57747/room-for-pbs-question

12:24 PM
@Ravexina why did you reject these edits?
https://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/705215
https://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/705214
https://askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/705226
these all look like good edits to me
filenames/paths should be inline code formatted, hyperlinks should be informative, the personal pronoun "I" should be capitalised...
I mean, a "good edit" is somewhat subjective, but I think those should have been approved. If you are not sure and if you think it's not perfect ...

@Zanna +1

thanks ;)

@Zanna Well, the replacing of found [here](http://example.com) with found at Some Long Article Title That Completely Breaks The Flow Of The Sentence doesn't seem helpful.
The rest are fine, agreed.

Q: What is the path of httpd.conf file in ubuntu 7?

TuxI install the ubuntu 7 on VM configure the Apache server with all default settings now I am searching for the httpd.conf file. I am not able to find the path of httpd.conf file.

7.10 <3

12:40 PM
@terdon I think some long article title is better than here
at least I know what I'm clicking
but I guess it's a matter of taste

@Zanna Really? Why? I find it really annoying since it is a different sentence so breaks the flow of text. That's why we have hyperlinks, after all.
I've never seen any site use the full name instead of just (click here) or whatever.

because I don't want to click [here] to find out what it is if I can avoid it... but hmm if it's just me I may have to retract some meta comments that I made, because it was me who told Sumeet to stop making uninformative hyperlinks

Oh. Wow, yes, please do. Or open a meta discussion or something. I absolutely hate that.
But maybe it's just me, of course, instead of just you.

like, because I would much rather see [this you tube video](youtubelink) than [this](youtubelink)

You can see where a hyperlink goes by hovering your mouse over it, and anyway, the title of the article/post or whatever isn't very informative with repsect to where it's taking you.

12:45 PM
because I sure as hell don't wanna go to youtube
can't hover on mobile though

@Zanna [this youtube video] is one thing, [LOL try not to laugh at this cats funny!!!] is another thing altogether.

Some kind of descriptive linking is better than this, this and this or one, two and three.

I actually do it differently depending on what it is

[this youtube video isn't just the title of the page being linked.

yeah but sometimes the article title is the most useful thing

12:46 PM
I was thinking specifically of the edit that changed this:

I do [this youtube video] and [Title of U&L question]
@jokerdino yes!

> I’ve purged and reinstalled mysql by running these commands (source) in the terminal:
To this:
> I can get mysql working temporarily by entering these commands at After fresh install of mysql-server, can't log in with mysql root -u:

ok, agreed, better to have left it in that case

That's 1) OK, wrong, first of all since "After fresh install of mysql-server, can't log in with mysql root -u:" is not where the command should be written and 2) much less clear to me.

or put I’ve purged and reinstalled mysql by running these commands (source on U&L) in the terminal:

12:48 PM
Sure. Just don't put the title as the link text unless it fits perfectly with the flow of the sentence.

Yeah, you need to make it flow.

@terdon or when you want to annoy someone with OCD >:-D

I guess it is quite a subtle thing

> I followed [these instructions] [...]

Yeah, ^^ is what I usually do.
Or ". . . the instructions found at this U&L answer" or whatever.

12:51 PM
I followed the instructions in this U&L post: [title of thing]
- instructions
- that
- I
- followed

Those three posts weren't having some serious problems though. The edits were borderline useful IMO.

@Zanna Yeah, that one I personally dislike. I find it hard to read. And I don't need the title, especially when the title is often uninformative. I appreciate knowing the site you're linking to, so this $site post makes sense, but not the title.

I think the title might be informative... anyway I used to always put [this post on U&L] but recently I have been trying to include more information
maybe trying to compensate for the quantity of my editing that is removing stuff I think is not useful

Well, knowing you, I'm pretty sure you did so in such a way as to not break the flow of the text./

@terdon :) thanks
@jokerdino so should they have been rejected? I would have made such edits myself...

12:55 PM
@Zanna I don't say that.

I would have improved the one case I mentioned where the link text wasn't helpful but otherwise I'd have approved them too.

my revisions page is "deleted x chars in body..." most of the way down...

bye bye

lol

Already closed, anyway.

12:58 PM
I was thinking hmmm that post's fate does not look good with terdon here watching
anyway my editing better be OK because o.O

Hello :)

When your unity build crashes kwin 👌🏼

that's giving me vertigo

Ouch,sorry

hahaha jk :)
@jokerdino but, me making a fuss about the rejection of them is not right?

1:03 PM
I don't say that.

second restart of the day, with a pretty fast boot time

The edits did not vastly improve the post but I wouldn't have rejected them because they are not poor edits.

@Avery (that's the fastest I've seen on this pc with systemd-boot, I saw 4.20secs with grub but after systemd-boot switch, I've started to get longer boot times like 4.8 secs etc)

I think if the edit improves the post at all there's no grounds for rejecting it... there's no reject reason for "only made it a little bit better". The wording of the reject reasons strongly discourages us from rejecting
the only reason to do that would be pedagogical
and I don't want to teach people not to make minor useful edits when they are well on the way to 2k...

@Zanna It's hard to argue in general terms about things like editing.

1:15 PM
yeah I agree completely

If the edits are half arsed, then meh.
If there are multiple issues in the post and the edit tries to cover most issues in the post, then I would accept it of course.

but that is a general statement. How does meh translate into action in the review queue? Close my eyes and click something?

You first try to use it as a teaching moment to the editor and improve the post hoping the editor sees it and learns from it.

I do yes

If there seems no improvement over time, you start rejecting it hoping the point gets across.
Finally, you go meta.

1:22 PM
yes, excellent point, but... so many things... maybe the person is able to improve the formatting, but not the grammar (because English is not their L1). I do not expect to teach EFL in the review queue

That would be fine. Formatting is probably top priority anyway.
Ruining the formatting is not cool though.

edits can be meh because they do not fix everything and you want to teach the person to fix more things so you improve... but in this case I think you were maybe saying the edits were meh because there was not much wrong with the post in the first place

Changing codeblocks to blockquotes or whatever is rage material.

hahaha yeah
the reject message could get ugly in such cases
but that rarely happens

@Zanna yeah I said that already.
> Those three posts weren't having some serious problems though

1:26 PM
so, in that case improving the edits at first may not be possible and rejecting them later if they don't stop seems unjustifiable if the edits do make some improvement
> I think you were saying...

@Zanna yeah of course

I don't think we actually have any differences of opinion on this issue... if I am wrong, please correct me, please!

My point kinda being maybe there are other posts which might require our help more than these.

I know for a fact that you are right

o.O

1:30 PM
but what to do? as reviewers we only have what the editor found to improve... as editors we only have the post in front of us to improve... opportunity...
@jokerdino I mean, I have seen them with mah own aahz

ah c

what software is dumb enough to install itself in /root?

no idea
@terdon is that a dupe of that one ^ for SO?

We're about to replace the last SQL Server in the Stack Overflow cluster (currently a replica). Hopefully this tweet is the only indication.

1:37 PM
@Feeds famous last words :=)

lol

@Rinzwind Nah, the OP wants to know what the root directory is, not change it.
@Zanna The OP decided to run the installer as root. I just spent an hour or so trying to sort out their other issue: askubuntu.com/questions/909043/path-variable-issue/…

hmm that dude was here last weektoo. with weird ideas.

the installer should be smarter and install in some sensible place if [[ $EUID == 0 ]] or something

no the installer should what it is told to do.
If that means an "rm -rf /*" it means an "rm -rf /*" :=)
no questions asked

1:40 PM
@Zanna Why? There do exist perfectly valid reasons to want to install something as root. You just need to know what you're doing.
The old adage about Mr gun and Mr foot comes to mind.

all my 3rd party software is in /opt :-P

@terdon I don't see any problem with installing stuff as root... we do it every day with APT. But /root is a stupid place for software because it has no x permission for o. Unless you want to install something that only root can ever run or even see it should go in /usr/local/bin or /opt etc
that's what I'm saying, obviously you know all this
argh

@Zanna Precisely. There are systems where root is the only user and you could well want something for root alone.

we all agree :=)
here another one ->

Q: how should I repair exFat data if I run ntfsfix on ubuntu?

TonyI was runing ntfsfix on ubuntu for my "exFat" Data. Is there any method to repair my data back to correct format? Thanks so Much!

@terdon but in Ubuntu...

1:43 PM
from this I asssume ntfsfix can be used to "fix" exfat?

hmm time to quit before I say even more dumb things
\o

o/
so no more fun till Zanna is back :P

@Zanna . . . server edition running on a VM behind a firewall with no access to the internet and just serving as an SQL server for the local intranet, you only have root as a user.
There are times when root is the right user to use. Just not many (or probably any) in a personal machine.
However, Linux and yes, even Ubuntu, is often used on servers.

eh @terdon no. I'd have a user, but not root.

@Rinzwind <3

1:46 PM
@Rinzwind I've had root and no user. Not saying it's perfect but it wasn't worth the bother of setting up separate users. This was a machine only accessible from the local intranet, with no security sensitive stuff at all and only a read-only sql database.

@Zanna liar! :+)

@terdon yeah I see you are right, I was wrong that the installer should automatically stop you shooting yourself in the foot, since you might indeed know what you're doing

... and those that don't need to learn the hard way >:-)

@Rinzwind turned off laptop and going to work, but I have mobile :S

Well enough. You?

Meh. Day only recently started :P

@JacobVlijm 83? How are you grandpa? :P

@ThomasWard changes to the git repo at work. no longer push origin master with edit. now i have to branch and request merge... which I honestly should have been doing anyway, but it's another step. Like, create but not edit. So, it has to be perfect the first time to just push. >.>

@RobotHumans Fun fact: that's what I normally do at the workplace, even with my own code projects for work. Master branch protected, forks or secondary branches are needed to have changes in there for testing, etc. CI must also pass (yay testsuites!), etc. Then, and only then, can it be merged to Master.

1:58 PM
I'ld understand if we had CI, but we don't, and I'm not seeing paying for a github subscription, so I can put in pull requests against a private repo

there are some exceptions to that rule that I set, such as a "I fubar'd the order of operations and the test suite didn't catch it so now we have it dying every other action" and that's an emergency situation
but since i'm the only one who really works on those systems, it's my rules there :p
i should really port this software to Python 3... but i'm lazy.

@jokerdino but I wonder what I'm failing to see...

Now, installed and configured MATE to usable. That completes my (let me count) ...

@Zanna don't we all?

@Zanna Poor old printer.

Ok I'm coming over. What's for dinner?

@jokerdino அது என்ன?

@jokerdino that looks delicious

@Zanna Like தோசை.

What's it made of?

2:50 PM
@RobotHumans hmm, they have not much taste on their own.
Need some chutney.

@jokerdino I don't know, never had that, but the sauce/chutney is always key ;)

@Zanna Rice batter I guess.

@jokerdino already restarted twice today, thanks to: 1) cursor going bonkers 2) kwin crashing

How many respawns remaining?
