There is a really great code only answer by Gunnar H about a lost PATH :)
But why am I still awake? :(
This is one of my favourite answers actually, and I think explanation would detract from it askubuntu.com/a/803281/527764
Perfect aha moment

1:03 AM
@Zanna well then get your 10k right now

@Zanna I think at least a "these are the default paths" would be nice

1:17 AM
ugh
what is this old grammar?
question marks, exclamation marks, semi-colons, colons all have a space before them
question marks and exclamation marks have two spaces after them
and periods do too

@Zacharee1 wat

@Zacharee1 Oh, that's because of typewriters. Monospaced fonts, the extra space made it easier to read

@RPiAwesomeness yeah, but people (ahem @Serg) still use it :p
@Seth exactly

Q: Is it ever correct to have a space before a question or exclamation mark?

remIn written English (mainly online) I often come across sentences ending with a question or an exclamation mark with a space before it. Is it always just an error or a typo? Or there are cases when it is a correct English, for example after closing parentheses or some other punctuation marks?

1:36 AM
Hi! :) vs Hi ! :)
This is a sentence! vs This is a sentence !

Does anyone here know how to setup a chatroom feed on a tag?

2:01 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 yes. why?

@KazWolfe I wanted to setup a feed in my/@ƎpᴉʇʎXD room so the bot can display questions that is using a specific tag.

what tag

invite me, set me to R/O, i'll set it up, and kick me :D

Oh yeah
I was going to tell you

Well all my courses are up
but still no Ethernet or SO
And a lot of people are annoyed about SO being blocked, especially the people in the Java class
haha, inadvertent puns..

tell us what you need on SO and we can copypasta it here for you

2:28 AM
@Zacharee1 adding spaces improves readability
Not everything that's correct is readable

askubuntu.com/questions/822341/… something I'd like to figure out yet tonight

grr. i can't figure this out...
@NathanOsman do you have java experience at all?

A little bit.

Enums?

2:36 AM
Not really... but ask anyway.

okay. so I have a class called ChatChannel.

If nothing else, sometimes describing your problem to someone else helps you see something you overlooked.

This has a sort of a registry so I can call specific instances of ChatChannel.
like so: ChatChannel.getChannelById("global")
easy enough. But I also have a class called DefaultChatChannel, meant for, well, defaults.
So I'd like to get DefaultChatChannel.GLOBAL to point to the same instance as ChatChannel.getChannelById("global")

Hi

because i'm lazy

2:38 AM
hey @Jodamo117

@KazWolfe Why not have a static member initialized to the value of that?

@NathanOsman hm?

Here's a common issue just put up by another user that I still haven't been able to resolve for myself. Any takers? askubuntu.com/questions/822333/…

the closest thing i can think of is this:
public enum DefaultChatChannel {
    GLOBAL(ChatChannel.getChannelById("gl")),
    STAFF(ChatChannel.getChannelById("stf"));

    private ChatChannel channel;

    DefaultChatChannel(ChatChannel channel) {
        this.channel = channel;
    }
}

@KazWolfe public static kitten whatever ... GLOBAL = ChatChannel.getChannelById("global");
(I can never remember all the access modifier things.)

2:41 AM
ah. here's where it gets complicated.
In order to actually get a channel by ID, it needs to be created and instancized, and then stored in a HashMap
-2
Q: Should I be using a HashMap or Collection for performance?

Kaz WolfeI have a class in some code, ChatChannel (some unneccessary code omitted), that I'm having a bit of trouble with. public class ChatChannel { private static HashMap<String, ChatChannel> registeredChannels = new HashMap<>(); // ChannelID, ChatChannel Object public static void registerCha...

this is sorta my crappy solution that's getting downvoted like hell

2:54 AM
yeah, i can make the enum point to the channel object really easily.
the problem is I need to register the channel before that is even run, then.

What's wrong with a getDefaultChannel() method?

it's a shortcut in the code
This is for a chat program, basically.
I guess I could make a GetOrCreate() thing...

Oh the idiots that run our country..

there is a decent chance we will look back and call apple's move genius

:P

@Seth this
xD

looks like flash in my chrome has gone completely bonkers

@Seth Who was that?!?

3:16 AM
@NathanOsman Colin Powell. Former 4 star army general and secretary of state.
I believe that was in an email he sent to Hillary when she became secretary of state.

now that you mention colin powell, i wonder what he is up to nowadays

@edwinksl He's on the salesforce board of directors, according to wikipedia.

heh, "relevant" expertise i am sure

I'm sitting here with my hot stir fry..
I killed an Imac...

oh?

i wonder what the "i" in Iphone means
I got it's hard drive out

3:33 AM
@JamesTobin too lazy

good idea
I am dealing with a horendous uefi install on my hp
cant get a god damn usb to boot

this is bait, isn't it?

@KazWolfe HOW I WISH I HAD BIOS ON MY DAMNED HP AT THIS MOMENT!!
I wish you were here watching me this whole day
I have tried at least 20 times to get my flash drive to boot
probably more than that

i have way more important things to do.

3:35 AM
I have incorporated my broken install of ubuntu, my ubuntu mate, my windows xp, and my windows 2000 and I still cant get it
@KazWolfe I need to do it because my install on my hp sucks
I need to reinstall OS
and I cant boot USB and the thing has no cd/dvd drive

gr. this java is annoying me.

I'm with you there. I hate java

all i want is to make a shortcut for default chat channels

If you are using java I know you are having a horrible time

actually i'm having a great time. i'm just doing something that is unnecessary and something that i'm trying to do because reasons. it works fine just now, but i just want to make a shortcut because laziness

3:38 AM
well I am trying to do something that is necessary and UEFI is not letting me do it. I'm dead serious. It just wont boot it no matter what. Even with that dumb legacy mode option

be more specific and i can help
any errors?

er just plain wont boot
with legacy I can try to browse for efi files
but the efi files do not work
it is a windows 8.1 install disk

what version are you trying to install
oh.

I wil install 8.1 first then ubuntu

why are you not using EFI
Just use it.
Windows doesn't boot in legacy mode iirc

3:39 AM
cant

Why not.

wont work

Disable CSM and secure boot. Then, manually select the flash drive as the boot device.

btw windows 8.1 DOES boot legacy
I"VE DONE THAT

It's not supposed to if EFI exists.
Then your boot media isn't bootable because some reason.

3:40 AM
well I have tried with efi enabled

How'd you make the drive?

even tried doing it with grub
I have tried using dd, disk image writer, unetbootin, and rufus
now I'm trying a multibootusb make
that puts grub on
grub 2

@NathanOsman NATHANNNNN....

i still think you're making the drive wrong

3:42 AM
You herrrrre?

sup @Numi
now I am trying different ISO in desperation

Okay @JamesTobin.
Format the drive, and make sure to mark it as GPT

@JamesTobin Hello. I need to talk to @NathanOsman

I remember having these problems before on Ubuntu ISO tho
i cant remember what i did to fix it

@Numi Yes?

3:44 AM
I was talking to him before.. oh here he is lol

Sorry, I saw your ping earlier but I was at work.

Here's the order of attack:

1. Format the USB drive with a GPT table
2. Make a single FAT32 partition, and add the boot flag
3. Copy-paste all the files

Penetrate the weak coding!

Oh, good! Hi! Remember you said to talk to you if the Stack Exchange staff hadn't replied after Tuesday?

I've been here since this morning working on this
yes I have tried both GPT and MBR, and both fat32 and NTFS

3:45 AM
@Numi Yup.
Still haven't heard back?

Well, they haven't...@NathanOsman

GPT/Fat32. Make sure the boot flag is set

ok.

@Numi I'll see if I can find someone...

Ill try that on new ISO. had already done on old ISO

3:46 AM
Monday was a US holiday, so I am sure they are behind on tickets. I would give it another day or two. There are over 150 sites they have to handle requests for :)

@Seth Oh, I see.

@Seth I talked to Jon and he suggested that it would get handled Tuesday.
But if you think it's worth waiting longer, sure.

@NathanOsman I know.
I'm sure they tried.

@NathanOsman Can you ask him if my request was even recieved? I hope I pressed send...

I don't know if he's around now.

3:48 AM
OK.

@KazWolfe what do you recommend: multiboot-usb, dd, or disk image writer?
dd I mean using dd in terminal

I recommend none of those.

I'll just wait then. Thank you, everyone!:)

Just copy-paste the files from the ISO into the partition.
That's the magic of EFI
No boot sectors.

really?

3:49 AM
yep

@NathanOsman told me that wouldnt work... right?

as long as it's flagged bootable, that should work.

how do you flag bootable?

In GParted, right click on the partition

@JamesTobin I meant the dd wouldn't work.
2
Sorry for the confusion.

3:50 AM
oh ok
np
my internet is being crap :(

The boot flag is occasionally important for some EFI systems.

I have this error when trying to mount the ISO image as virtual disk

Q: Disk Image Mounter: Value too large for define data type

nightcrawlerI have a genuine iso file of AutoCAD ~2.5gb, I can mount it in windows with traditional application like Poweriso & Alcohol but while in nautilus the error mentioned in title occurs. Now how can I eliminate this error? And, or how do I extract iso to its contents at-least Winrar can treat iso as...

Perhaps try verifying the ISO hash.

you can use /mnt as your mount point

3:53 AM
@KazWolfe Unless you are already using it (like me).

damn i had a repfarm question but it's dupe :(

@KazWolfe that worked
I'm copying data now

> "X-Plane does not support the Gallium driver stack."
Grr....

@KazWolfe @NathanOsman please clear stars, they seem unnecessary for that post

Done. It wasn't me, for the record.
So it's impossible to run X-Plane on Xenial with an AMD card.
ಠ_ಠ

3:58 AM
hi seth

In his best Seth voice: hi, kaz

lol

@RPiAwesomeness My two cents: the money I earned from my sold Chromebook :P

I am having a strong urge right now to install Arch on this machine...

yap!

4:01 AM
:O RPi is a fellow goat!

@NathanOsman don't lol
@KazWolfe copying done... now if this doesnt work I will slap you around with a large trout (just kidding)

@RPiAwesomeness your profile says "I'm a Goat and you're not." which is false, i am a very real goat. pls fix 0/10 very offensive :P

Hrm... you can't shrink an online ext4 partition?

hey it's working!!!

Q: Chat Channel Definition and Registry

Kaz WolfeThis is an excerpt of a part of a (very large) program that I'm writing. This particular section handles the creation and management of chat channels. However, I think that this code is rather complicated and not as clean/easy as it should be. package com.lolfakename.chat; import com.lolfakena...

some code review if anyone wants to criticize my inability to program

4:06 AM
DARN my internet is off and on
cant post stuff without network first going down
something is being wierd

so... it worked? neet.
see? EFI is amazing once you learn its tricks.

something is being wierd
MY INTERNET IS NOT WORKING AT ALL! THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING
off and on every 5 secs literally dang it
ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG did it again

@JamesTobin router or computer?

dont know but I'm MAD
still doing it

I am running a bash script in terminal and I want to keep the terminal output as log without suppressing the terminal output, the scripts has some wget command and I tried "script -a test.sh output.log", "./test.sh | tee -a /location/log.txt", but no logs in the files.

4:13 AM
oh and by the way @NathanOsman I was wrong... I have Intel graphics not AMD. Was getting mixed up with my other computer
GUYS DO YOU SEE ANYTHING WHEN I GO OFFLINE/ONLINE?
THIS IS CRAZY

And hello every one :)

yay codereview likes my question :D

in this case "script -a test.sh output.log", it does not recognizes the script but did keep the error log :)

ARRRRRG windows install fails right after format :(

Q: Is the Unix operating system featured in Jurassic Park real?

ThinkingMediaWhen the film Jurassic Park came out, and I saw that scene where Ariana Richards is sitting in front of the computer and says; This is a Unix system. I know this. It's the files for the whole park. It's like a phone book - -it tells you everything. I've always wondered. Is that silly 3D ...

TIL

4:25 AM
so @JamesTobin, are you starting to see why EFI is nice?
Specifically, boot files?

no
if it was bios it would have been done with a simple unetbootin run
@KazWolfe question: will NTFS work?
because this other ISO file install.wim is too large for fat32

um...
it might.
depends on your system, but you can definitely try

more frequent than i thought

4:41 AM
you mean actually inside the coding??????????

> penguin

yes source code

Guys , please if anyone of you can help me on my isssue :)

@Downgoat lol yheah
yeah that's funny

@Downgoat creator said penguin is there as a reference

4:42 AM
@PavelSayekat what's up?

@edwinksl oh ok. that makes more sense :P

Is 24 GB enough for Arch?

yeah... but dont spend too much of your time on arch lol
installing software is dependencies and dependencies and dependencies of dependencies and dependencies of dependencies of dependencies and dependencies of dependencies of dependencies of dependencies and dependencies of dependencies of dependencies of dependencies of dependencies of dependencies

@JamesTobin I am running a bash script in terminal and I want to keep the terminal output as log without suppressing the terminal output, the scripts has some wget command and I tried "script -a test.sh output.log" does not recognize the script, "./test.sh | tee -a /location/log.txt", but no logs in the files. but the script itself runs effectively.

not skilled on that :(

4:49 AM
@NathanOsman AFAIK that'll be plenty. Depends on how much you'll be using it

O_O
No wonder /home was nearly full.
I forgot that I had the kernel source tree in there.
30 GB!

how big is your hdd?

@NathanOsman, can you halp me please :)

yeah @NathanOsman is an expert ;)
super honking expert
:P

This room is Highlighted as his room :)

4:54 AM
oh really? he owns the room? though he just moderates it
he's amazing ;)

@JamesTobin He is the user highlighted in this room, I mean to say.

@PavelSayekat perhaps test.sh is printing to STDERR? try ./script 2>&1 | tee -a log.txt?

so my copy dialog is hanging on 13/14 secs back and forth, even worse i just saw it back up from 5.7 to 5.6 gb done :o
wierd
@PavelSayekat oooo yeah he's definitely mod
k now it backed to 5.3 and 15 seconds left
ubuntu is wierd :o

@JamesTobin ;_; y u say this?

because it is >:C

4:57 AM
@JamesTobin banned

^ there needs to be a "flag as blasphemy" :P

aw :(

are you installing ubuntu on legacy mode again

@Downgoat I like to be the goat too :p, on your suggestion, on it

this is ubuntu on an older desktop that doesnt have uefi
specifically ubuntu with MATE
unity's wierd too :(
but listen: wierd is one thing horrible is another thing
wierd jus tmeans it acts strangely sometimes.

4:59 AM
your misspelling of weird is rather triggering

and windows doesnt act strangely, it just plain dont work lol
darn
*wierd
wait thats how i spelled it
gee you are right

so, @Downgoat, what's with the frequent visits now?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ idk, I came here to ask a git question IIRC and never left i guess.

i mean, we like having our caprine brother around, but you just popped in here one day lol

this place feels like a zoo

5:04 AM
@edwinksl you must of not been to TNB. Every other user is an animal. Though only a few stay in character :P

@Downgoat heh nope i haven't been there. maybe i should pay a visit and see what's going on there

@Downgoat $ ./test.sh 2>&1 | tee -a log.log

@KazWolfe hopping in is just what goats do :P

5:10 AM
@PavelSayekat try doing a ps aux | grep tee looks like a tee process is already running on that. killall -KILL tee could work

Are you kidding me?
Off-by-one errors?

@Downgoat Awoo?

Q: Cannot restart SSH daemon after changing sshd_config to port 2222

FullStackI have been looking around and couldn't find a solution to the issue I am having. @Anwar morning

@PavelSayekat hi!

oh my god
i found something impossible

what?

5:31 AM
An ISP that's actually good.
and actually *gasp* cares about customers!

where?

Global.
Hurricane Electric
problem is, they're like top-tier datacenter, and/or IPv6 tunnel

hmm... we're still dealing with locals

yeah but my god they're support is amazing.
I literally have a single PoC for my account, and he's very good.
And... for free, which i sgreat

sounds great!

5:35 AM
why cant comcast be this

@Anwar that issue isn't solved, my one, the tee gives a clear sense, but somehow that is not working for any script but only for specific commands :)

@KazWolfe it doesnt boot from ntfs (headbang)
and the other ISO dont work
this sucks

@PavelSayekat you might ask another question detailing your problem.

gotta restart brb

@Anwar paste.ubuntu.com/23147964 , and imgur.com/a/BdCRh, but no log recorded, and yes now considering your suggesstion.

5:42 AM
oh and by the way @NathanOsman I was wrong... I have Intel graphics not AMD. Was getting mixed up with my other computer

@PavelSayekat you want those to be shown both in terminal and in file?

back :)

@Anwar yes

oh my god ipv6 is amazing

Aligning LVM extents... this is not much fun.

5:45 AM
it's so nice to have it back

@KazWolfe IKR?

hey nathan can i ask a favor of you over a secure channel?

Will be back later, Thanks Guys :)

i'd like to see if IP6 inbound works too

@PavelSayekat have you checked this ? askubuntu.com/questions/38126/…

5:46 AM
@KazWolfe I found my usb dvd drive. How would you recommend I burn iso to dvd on a horendous uefi system?

just burn an iso

brasero good?

yep

good thx

@KazWolfe Not ATM - I am on the LiveCD.

5:48 AM
ah. no worries

I'm trying desperately to resize my LVM physical volumes.

i thought you could do that live?

You can't shrink ext4 filesystems live.
So it doesn't really matter that you can shrink LVM volumes live :P

gah i wish i had an outside connection accessible right now
