Q: Why did no one VTC or dupelicate this?

Mark KirbySaw this today, from this meta post and I can't believe that this question is not only open but answered by high rep users too! This question is way too broad as it asks four questions and on top of that, if I Google software centre vs apt the top four results are answers to this here on Ask Ubu...

Some strong words there :)

well mark certainly doesn't mince his words

I left a comment...
I wanna go back to sleep... I wonder if it's possible...

7:17 AM
@Zanna What time is it for you?

08:17
I went to sleep about 01:20 and woke up at 05:38

yay, instant downvote in meta
love it

Perhaps I could share my chia/cacao/almond milk pudding with you?

now I've had breakfast that might carry me off for an hour until I have to go to work
@andrew.46 mmmm love that stuff

Topped with banana and bluberries
If I had some soy icecream that would be there as well
Any old usenet users might be perturbed to hear that alt.os.linux.ubuntu seems to be fading away :(

7:29 AM
@andrew.46 I had raw carrot & cinnamon muesli with dried organic apricots & pineapple mixed with soya almond yogurt and maple syrup peanute butter, with fresh figs, grapes, greengages and a sprinkle of maca on the top...

methinks mark kirby is too angry

I can't possibly sleep now, meta is too stimulating

@Zanna Hmmm.... could you pass me a dish with that?

I'm not sure why people get so upset about these things myself...

Maple syrup peanut butter?

7:30 AM
@Zanna but the only way to avoid escalating a conflict with an angry person is to leave the conflict :P so perhaps sleep is the best thing to do

This is one or 2 things?

@andrew.46 passes yeah it's peanut butter with... a bit of maple syrup in it... comes in a jar!

That is so cool :)

@edwinksl I have NO desire to ever escalate any conflict, I only want to diffuse... I agree with you, probably best to leave it now as you say

7:38 AM
hehe :)

@andrew.46 that is a thing???

I had to comment again! Why can't I leave it? I just want to make it better... that "quick rep grab" just feels wrong.
Stuff to review: 404

@Zanna or write a post and get instantly downvoted :p

He edited in response to my comments :)
which makes my comments look a bit stupid, but I'm not going to delete them...
How did we get from 200 ish to 410 things to review in like 3 days?

mark needs to tone down on his accusations
that is way out of line for an experienced user
@Zanna what do those "things" include? flags?

7:45 AM
@edwinksl only mods review flags surely
you know how there is a little orange box showing suggested edits?

yeah

I think that's because suggested edits need quick attention? so the system wants you to go fix them asap, hence the orange box

how do you get 410 things though
i clearly don't see 410 ;P

well, when you get 10k, it's not only SEs that get counted in that orange box, it's everything needing review

i see
imagine if it includes unanswered questions

7:47 AM
it's a hint I guess "hey you with the mod-tools, are you moderating?"
lol that would be painful
I really hate reviewing first posts, it hurts

there are enough people to deal with first posts for now :p

I have 5 declined post flags ever... bad?

the CV queue is always at 100+ though
at least it is 100+ for me...

@Zanna Have you had a look at delete votes?

@Zanna that seems pretty damn good to me

7:50 AM
@edwinksl it's the same Q for everyone, afaik
@andrew.46 I've read about it, but haven't managed to use any of those yet
@edwinksl phew, I was getting worried, I flagged something really stupidly in the last couple of days

You have 6 votes per day

@Zanna wouldn't skipping cause the number to be different for each person? or am i not understanding what the number means? (probably the latter...)

@edwinksl skipping has no effect... I think you only don't see it again if you vote to close or leave open. editing knocks it from the queue

heh ok
<-- n00b

@edwinksl at least skip button! Often I open First Post queue and literally skip everything
@edwinksl not at all, I asked a Q on meta about this as I didn't know... let me find it
has nice answer from Seth that clears things up meta.askubuntu.com/questions/16048/…
jokerdino was here when I asked and explained to me as well
double mod teaching
I'm still not 100% clear on everything! why am I so thick?

7:56 AM
Oh wow. Mark is way out of line there.

he edited some... unkind words from his post now I think

@Zanna It still reads like a parent berating their children.

@Zanna mr iguana to the rescue! i have seen this before actually but clearly i have forgotten about it too :p

@terdon idk why people get upset about questions they don't like getting answered...

No idea. In any case, if you're upset, you can make that understood without that tone.

8:01 AM
reminds me of the one about how to get something from the 3rd column in df -h... something like that
I agree of course, but I behave badly when I'm upset too :(

We all do. And we all wish we hadn't.

yep!

we do get more control over it as time goes on

there are some compensations to getting older...

if i were 10 years younger, by now there would be a full-fledged verbal war already and i would get banned

Q: Dovecot not restart

alexI'm running ubuntu and aim to install mail server based on this tutorial. when i try service dovecot restart i get this: stop: Unknown instance: start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.6" (uid=1000 pid=1568 comm="start dovecot ") interface="com.ubuntu.Upstar...

but some folks don't flip out & hit out when they're upset I think, like my brother for example, just crumples up quietly...

@Zanna those are nice people :)
of course then to balance things out, there are unnice people like me, oops

Well, Mark apologized and deleted his post. All's well that ends well.

@terdon thanks for your timely intervention

@edwinksl yeah those are the extraNice people and I give thanks for them, but you are awesome too <3
@terdon oh good :)

8:13 AM
@Zanna you clearly have not seen me in angry mode :p

@edwinksl I've seen my dad in angry mode, and I still think he's awesome. I become utterly horrible when I lose it and throw all my toys

@Zanna please don't throw your toaster though ._.

this isn't my toy, it's mah baby

awww

heh heemayl beat meh, should have answered instead of commenting

8:27 AM
@Zanna And you beat me :)
Still typing away when comment and answer flashed up

lol

Time for a break from AU I suspect......
Night all

next time!
goodnight @andrew.46 :)

8:40 AM
can't understand why your readlink Q got a downvote?? @edwinksl

@Zanna no clue

weird

one of those days

must be some weird solar activity going on... I feel like trash but I blame sleep deprivation
I see your screen lock answer got an accept though

@Zanna coffee/tea will make everything feel better :p

8:43 AM
fixed by reboot, no repro askubuntu.com/review/first-posts/619299
@edwinksl I need a bucket of masala chai right about now

bucket??? everything in moderation please...
but uhh, do more AU moderation while you are at it

I'm still chugging through first posts like purgatory

Q: LVM volume group is inactive after reboot of Ubuntu

@edwinksl or did you mean something specific here?

@Zanna nope i just mean you should go clear the review queues before you go to work ;P
esp the first posts. they are a lot of fun

8:56 AM
Thankfully I'm done with them after skipping about 15/20 >_< now on LQPs which is always easier
time for work & all queues cleared except the big one :S later xxx

done @SmokeDetector

9:19 AM
@edwinksl: I ate all the cookies! >:D

@ParanoidPanda greedy!

aawrgh
I didn't pass an audit
But I always passed all audits
And I didn't even think what I was doing was 'inappropriate'
I wanted to leave a comment to ask which shell they were using

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in body, bad keyword in title, link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: Weight Loss Process That Easy Works by georgeshudsion on askubuntu.com

And besides, I didn't even think the question was that 'high quality'

it happens
don't worry about it

9:27 AM
Here's the question, if you want to take a look at it: askubuntu.com/review/first-posts/619553

i personally liked the question because it may seem like a silly typo kind of problem but there is something deeper going on :p

@grooveplex that's why I hate audits :p

@JourneymanGeek show us some of your failed audits :D

@JourneymanGeek and besides, it works fine for me... any slightly competent Bash scripter would have known that the leading zeros are not needed

@grooveplex doesn't mean it is a bad question

9:34 AM
I failed my second audit last week

@Zanna tsktsk

@edwinksl on su.... I might end up... Eliminating the evidence....

I like that Q, and man bash is too big to read... and I tried reading man page for bc and I understood nothing, but I can use it...

@Zanna man bash is, uhh, quite the documentation
3815 lines T_T

9:45 AM
Yeah I can't read it hahaha

10:14 AM
@edwinksl tsk
try vlc -H
mplayer is 8086
ooooooh @edwinksl try man gcc | wc -l
19000 D:

omg
maybe man bash is child's play then

I got an even better one
wireshark-filter
more then 190000 so 10 times gcc _O-

its source code is probably fewer than 190k lines

@edwinksl then again it probably is used more than wireshark-filter. more than gcc ... hmmm that might be a stretch

I lost -6 rep today
wth

Q: List all saved ssh fingerprints

BowParkIn an ssh client (Ubuntu 14.04), with ssh-keygen -F <host> some informations about <host> are printed, with a hash of its ECDSA key fingerprint. Is it possible to see this fingerprint in its original form, not hashed? If yes, how?

Q: Cloning a bootable USB drive to another stick with same size

SoiftI have 20 identical (in size) USB drive where I need to put a bootable Ubuntu version on. The drive I use have a capacity of 4GB. @terdon You want this in U+L ^^
>:-D

Um. . . Nah, thanks though :)

@cl-netbox Oh, hey. Red devil turned blue?

1:39 PM

@Zanna Seems not really specific to Ubuntu. He modified some files of a special application and now they don't work, it's neither a common application nor do we know anything about the modifications or the environment, so it's either not Ubuntu or unclear or too broad IMHO.

shrug I'm skipping!

@ParanoidPanda I additionally placed an answer under your question, so that other users with a similar problem can benefit too -> askubuntu.com/questions/827114/… ! :)
@ByteCommander HaHaHa ... yes - as it seems ... Hi ! :)

2:01 PM
@cl-netbox What has byobu to do with that?

boxy!
:-)

@Seth wolfbot seems very stable
I personally think it could be ported over here
@cl-netbox ooh new avatar

2:23 PM
@ByteCommander I just wanted to show an alternative with a convenient solution ... anyway ... don't you think that it is a generally useful answer ? :)
@Zacharee1 yes ... sometimes things are changing ... Hi ! :)

hello world rpm may be?

thanks @cl-netbox

Q: Why is the review time "come back" period variable?

Elder GeekAfter reviewing 20 close vote duplicates I got the "Thank you, come back in X hours" message. I'm curious as to why the number of hours varies. Yesterday I got one that said 6 hours and today it says 9. Why is this variable and how is it calculated? I searched meta.askubuntu.com and searched on...

@Anwar serial votes?
cereal votes?

@Zacharee1 I can fix that

Congrats @ElderGeek on reaching 10k!
12

@Zacharee1 nah

@cl-netbox yeah, I was just confused because byobu in general is something completely different. I did not know that package contains such a tool. You've got my upgoat :)

2:36 PM
I never got serial votes. I never had big fan

Hi @jokerdino ! :) Hi @Seth ! :) How are you ?

hi

Congratulations @ElderGeek !

Hi! Doing OK.

@ByteCommander Thanks ! :) upgoat ? I can't see any ... :D

2:37 PM
@ElderGeek congratulations!

@ElderGeek Congrats from me too ! :)

@cl-netbox That goat ran away... I caught it now :)

lotta 10ks recently :p

@ByteCommander hahaha ... nice .... thanks a lot ! :)

oooh a flag!

2:41 PM
@Zacharee1 IF BLUE MARK VALID
Link crashes browsers

REALLY? WHY?

@Zacharee1 Congrats to you as well ! :)

:p

@Zacharee1 if f it is a link it crashes browsers (mind did ;-) )

@Rinzwind my school blocks it :p.
but I thought the site went down

2:42 PM
"we all seen tis" or something?

the flag disappeared but not the message
I'm confused

It was a valid flag
my browser crashed. what other thing that link do @Rinzwind ?

that's it
but why is the message still there?\

dunno.
I had to hard reset my PC

@Anwar tsk. I did not >:-D

2:54 PM
Thank you for those kind congrats.

just reloaded the browser :=D
@ElderGeek gratz!!

@Anwar xD
should I flag it again?

:( go on

If I could get a dollar a point I could make a healthy dent in my mortgage... ;-)

3:00 PM
@ByteCommander the flag

I reviewed it as valid after checking the link, but I did not cast the initial flag.

the flag had disappeared for me
then you joined the room and suddenly it showed up again

I flagged it first I think

@Zacharee1 Yes, Dream on I know...
That's odd. I got notification of @Zacharee1 answer to meta.askubuntu.com/questions/16109/… but did not receive notification of @Anwar answer although @Anwar answer cam in 3 minutes before...

Oh hey, congratulations @ElderGeek!

3:08 PM
Thank you @terdon

@ElderGeek oh. don't know why! I was a bit surprised tbh :)

@Anwar, most strange

good afternoon

Good day

@IanC Good afternoon ! :)

3:16 PM
how are you doing?

I am doing fine, thank you for asking.

@IanC everything alright - what about you ? :)

all good too!

@IanC great ! :)
@jokerdino late answer ... but better late than never ... nice to hear it ! :D

can't think of something else to update on my CPU temperature indicator, thought about changing it so it used libsensors instead of the output of another program, but now that I found out that people use psensors I don't see much sense in working on it :/
can't think of something else to update on my CPU temperature indicator, thought about changing it so it used libsensors instead of the output of another program, but now that I found out that people use psensors I don't see much sense in working on it :/

3:23 PM
@IanC ah ... that is what we talked about the other day ... :) But to have an alternative is always a good idea, so why stop working on it ? :) Maybe you can improve it ! :)

I don't know, ran out of ideas too besides using libsensors

@IanC yes - libsensors is the base ... but the GUI is another thing ... :)

I'll try to work on it then, maybe learning libsensors could be useful for other projects too

@IanC good decision ! :)

Is this too broad, not Ubuntu, or actually valid? askubuntu.com/q/827459/367990

3:39 PM
in my opinion it's offtopic

@ByteCommander i would say too broad
as well..

now I feel like eating ice cream :p

it's probably better ice cream weather for you @IanC

might be warmer than in UK, but it's a bit rainy those last few days
I've been studying some things lately, but caught myself reading the same thing 5 times to understand it
now I'm not sure if I'm slow on getting those things or if they are actually more advanced stuff haha

4:31 PM
I can't concentrate on anything lately

why @Zanna? lots of things going on?

hey @NathanOsman, whats up?

Not much.
Just making a video stabilization app.

Q: best window manager for heavey terminal usage and browser only

rajeevI am seeing a lot and lot of WM comparisons out there on net, but i am looking for some very specific requirements: I need a GUI for my VM which I generally use as launch-pad (hopbox or whatever you call it) to log into network servers. going to buy some food, see you all later!

@IanC no, only I'm distracted from everything by AU, here I have focus, in everything else, I am thinking about AU!
Aha new kernel!
Does the new kernel always come on a Tuesday??

5:36 PM
It came yesterday already, didn't it?

oh maybe, I updated yesterday early afternoon

I'm back!

@Zanna, I know what you mean, those last weeks I've been out of focus on everything except some stuff I've been studying about :p

it's nice to get caught up in something though, I am learning a lot

me too, been diving a bit into some really low level stuff
I had learned a bit of assembly before, but I think I never really understood what was going on under the hood, now I'm kind of learning it bit by bit

5:52 PM
that's very cool :)

it's taking some hard time trying to figure some things out though
