@NathanOsman look at the G5's modular bay render

I saw that.
But it's also not yet for sale.

Then we'll just have to wait until March or April :p

The GSIII has a removable battery and it is plenty thin for me.
Actually, my Moto G is thicker and it doesn't even have a removable battery.

Motos seem to generally be thick

8:14 PM
yeah. It's a design choice. I like it.

So, GNOME is pronounced "GUH-NOAM"?

user136984
@TheBrownOne: No idea what you guys are talking about, but that's how I pronounce it (not that you're meant to I don't think)... :P

user139252
I just heard it pronounced that way in a PCWorld video :P

user139252
I've always just pronounced it like garden gnome

user139252
Is GNU prounouced "GUH-NEW"?

user139252
8:22 PM
I thought it was pronounced like the animal, gnu.

user136984
Most native English speakers that I know pronounce it like you do, but all the foreigners I know pronounce it the other way... And I prefer the other way so I stick with it... :P

user136984
@TheBrownOne: I always just say the letters "G-N-U", like you can do with any acronym.

user136984
I don't know if that's how you're meant to pronounce it though... :D

user136984
Wow! This answer of mine got really popular overnight! :D

A: Skype complains about being too old version, but no newer exists?

Paranoid PandaMicrosoft no longer updates the version of Skype for Linux with new features (because they put all the new features in the Windows version because they want you to install Windows), and as that is a reasonably recently implemented feature the Skype version for Linux does not support it. So your ...

@ByteCommander @dn-ʞɔɐqɹW: Upgoat or downgoat? ;D

I always pronounced it "Nome" but I hear you can also pronounce it "dumb".
:D

@TheBrownOne acronyms are usually pronounced as they're spelled, with no silent letters, so it would make sense that the G is pronounced in GNOME. I'm almost certain that the G is pronounced in GNU as well.

But... Is Gnome an acronym?

user136984
@Nathan: I don't think so... But I don't know...

8:42 PM
@Serg if they're using it, they'll know. If not, what difference does it make?

@NathanOsman GNU Object Model Environment

@muru potentially confuses people, who might misinterpret yours attempt to help as mockery ?

I always pronounce it "GAH NOME" and "GA NEW", but I know people who pronounce it differently.
I think we can at least all agree it's not "JAH NOME" and "JA NEW" right? :P

And now I'll bring up GIF

@Serg They can flag it if they want. :shrug:

8:46 PM
@Seth I pronounce it G-nom, and G-noo.
Like human Genome . . .G-nom!
nom-nom

Nome

I have sooo much time today . . . but i cannot gather any strength whatsoever . . .just wanna faceplant into this blue table and sleep till my shift ends

> The name “GNU” is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not Unix!”; it is pronounced as one syllable with a hard g, like “grew” but with the letter “n” instead of “r”.

user136984
@Zacharee1 Ah, well that explains the capitalization then! I guess it's a bit like LASER (stands for something but nobody realises that to the degree that silly Americans turn the 'S' into a 'Z' making it mean nothing :P)...

Sure
> From Wikipedia: GNOME (pronounced /gəˈnoʊm/). That is for the desktop environment. For the little bugger that hides in the garden, it is pronounced 'nome". Yeah, the "correct" way is "guh-nome" like "guh-new" for GNU.
> “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations. They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G’, pronounced ‘jif’. End of story.”

Not so fast. John Simpson, Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, disagrees with Mr. Wilhite:

“However, the pronunciation with a hard g is now very widespread and readily understood. A coiner effectively loses control of a word once it’s out there…”

8:53 PM
871 rep on U&L . . . .I should invest more time into it

@Zacharee1 I pronounce it geef , because that's how i also pronounce it in russian

Lol

> It’s pronounced with a hard G, “GIF”, like “gift”.
Heck yeah

Yep

8:59 PM
Guys, we have much more urgent issue to worry about - people misspelling ubuntu as ubunto, ubantu , and whatever else

Takkat used to have a search query for that

umbunu
I saw that one the other day.

Or maybe it was htorque.
hope htorque is ok.

Of course he's not ok, he switched to mint!

hasn't been seen in 6 months.

Q: What to do with questions which are about versions which were off-topic when the question was asked, but no longer?

Paranoid PandaI recently came across a question (can't find it now though) which was asking about 15.10, however it has been asked before 15.10 had been released, and should have been closed as off-topic, but for some reason wasn't... So should one close these questions still or leave them open? The main argu...

9:23 PM
@Seth can I have bash question ?

9:38 PM
@Serg have one? You're allowed to have questions ;)
grr, when will people realize rules are not an end?

A: How to improve bash scripting from 1 long line to a better method?

SergYou could make small edit to your original idea with arrays - use arrayName[number]="tab assignment" form . Here's for instance what I did in interactive terminal session to open new terminal window ( and all these steps could easily be turned into a script ). $ array[0]=" --tab --title 'Tab1'...

@Seth see glenn's comment. What exactly he's talking about for the -e flag ?

hmm
@Serg looking at the OP's example:
gnome-terminal --tab --title="Zookeeper" --profile Hold -e "sh -c '/home/benu/Downloads/kafka_2.11-0.8.2.2/bin/zookeeper-server-start.sh /home/benu/Downloads/kafka_2.11-0.8.2.2/config/zookeeper.properties'"
see the whitespace after the -e option?

So that makes the last double quote unquoted ?

it's quoted.. but you already have double quotes open. I think glenn's point is that currently your quoting won't work without reworking.
you need 3 levels of quotation, basically.

I guess I'll point that out in my answer. Still think his downgoat wasn't well deserved

9:48 PM
@Serg your answer doesn't work.
unless bash is smarter than I think it is.

@Seth I'll be reworking that, but I don't have all the kafka / zookeeper stuff to work with.

I know, so you will have to replicate some example with a similar quotation pattern.
Just a tip: Glenn has a gold bash tag on SO and a silver one on both U&L and AU, if he says there's a problem with your answer, there probably is ;)
If this were python I'd be easy..

@Seth I know he's an experienced user, but I didn't get to what he's referring
And he didn't reply to my comment even though i commented right after he posted

10:18 PM
@Seth how's this ?
DIR:/xieerqi
skolodya@ubuntu:$ VAR=sh\ -c\ 'df;free;bash'

DIR:/xieerqi
skolodya@ubuntu:$ echo $VAR
sh -c df;free;bash
That way -e doesn't need all the crazy quoting. Gnome terminal parses sh\ -c\ 'df;free;bash' as one complete string

10:32 PM
that might work @Serg, I'm not really sure (I don't have time to find out atm either)

10:52 PM
Reworking all those quotations is major pain in the @$$

yes..

11:21 PM
@Serg since you'd be doing that both Seth and me have no problems with it :-)

11:37 PM
#!/bin/bash

function main()
{
   local cmd[1]="sh -c 'df;free;bash'"
   local cmd[2]="sh -c 'lsblk;cat /etc/fstab;bash'"
   local tabinfo[1]="--tab 'TAB1' --profile CRT -e"
   local tabinfo[2]="--tab 'TAB2'"
   gnome-terminal  ${tabinfo[1]} "${cmd[1]}" ${tabinfo[2]} "${cmd[2]}"
}

main
Well, that's nice to know @Rinzwind and @Seth approve of my endeavors. Anyway, how about that ^ ?

11:51 PM
Is it bad that running around asking people if I can get a ride home with them, getting permission to go home overnight again from the deans, and organizing something that should happen over three days is easier for me than just staying at school overnight on the weekend?

@Zacharee1 You don't wanna stay at school . . .overnight . . .Totally understandable. It's better to be home . . . sometimes

:)

I go through snow and blizzard (when we have one), even though it's easier if i still stay on college campus and then go to work. But they don't allow people staying at school anyway . . . .
