Back to the .dbus thing, it appears that my usage of sudo -s changes the ownership of .dbus.

yeah, use sudo -i

Makes sense
or sudo -H -i

err
-H sets $HOME to the listing under the password you use. Since you are using your password it will set $HOME to your $HOME.. which is where the issue comes from.

I chowned my direcgtory back to my name , but . . . i don't see how .dbus being owned by root is harmful . . . so far my system runs alright

and it'd be redundant if you use -i immediately after AFAICT

8:06 PM
Apple is reminding me my membership expires in a month :(

Tell them you're glad to leave!

I can't release signed OS X disk images without it.

@NathanOsman and how much the membership costs ?

:(
@Serg $99/yr

Too bad for those OSX users.

8:07 PM
Also iOS apps :P

hmmm . . . . not too expensive . . .

I'm assuming this is mostly for Nitroshare. Have you considered adding a donate button to the website?

@seth Yeah, looks like you're right. It is a redundant switch. Either way they both return the same HOME. It's probably the way I have it set up.

What about the Ubuntu membership ? How much that costs ?

@Seth no, not yet.

user139252
8:09 PM
@NathanOsman Apple is just rude.

@TheBrownOne I second that! =)

@Terrance -i should set $HOME to /root. How are you testing?

@Serg nothing. It's free :)

@Seth echo $HOME

@Seth that's what it does

8:09 PM
@Terrance Bash expands $HOME before the command is run, so that's not an accurate test :)

skolodya@ubuntu:$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for xieerqi:
$ echo $HOME
/root
$ pwd
/root
$

user139252
I strongly despise my work's network right now.

kos
@Terrance Yeah that's the problem. env_reset unsets a number of variables but not HOME, so HOME is still you home directory, and root ends up owning stuff. -H prevents that for a single command

user139252
It's too slow, and I'm trying to watch the new Ok Go video.

@NathanOsman I personally would also add a note that creating Apple binaries costs money.. Maybe even inside Nitroshare itself.

user139252
8:10 PM
It's shot in zero gravity!

@TheBrownOne Ok Go?
as in, the language?

@TheBrownOne etherwebs is an option ?

@Serg right. but sudo -i echo $HOME won't do what you expect.

@Seth @kos So what should be the proper test?

user139252
@Seth Awesome band. They did the treadmill video.

user139252
8:11 PM
@Serg Nope, all that jacks are on the lower floors of my new building.

@Terrance That I am not sure about.

Well, that's unfortunate

kos
@Terrance What do you want to test exactly?

user139252
You might have to sign up for Facebook :(

8:13 PM
Meanwhile, I got a starbucks giftcard, because I was smoking in properly marked smoking area on my campus . . . Still hate that they removed all ash trays next to buildings, and left like 9 spots (only) accross the whole university campus

@Rinzwind almost there... 190 :)

On saturdays and fridays I have to work, and 30 minutes of a break is not enought to walk over to the designated spot after eating and be back to work on time

Hey I'm up to 8 stars!

user139252
My new office is also not remotely close to a good coffee shop or eatery

@kos What is the proper way of a sudo shell. I have read that -H is good and that -i is good. I use sudo shells when I am working with Unison and other such applications that require root privileges. I don't want to be messing up my /home/terrance folder

user139252
8:14 PM
@Daniel No more stars for you!

@Terrance I guess trusting the manpage is the easiest way.

eh, why?

If I'm raising money for that, it might be worth looking into an Authenticode certificate as well so I can sign Windows binaries.

@Daniel imagine if those were GTA stars

> -H, --set-home
Request that the security policy set the HOME environment
variable to the home directory specified by the target user's
password database entry. Depending on the policy, this may
be the default behavior.

user139252
8:14 PM
Because 8 is a good enough number.

😳 @Serg

In fact 8 and 9 are considered lucking in Asia
Also 6 , because sounds like liu, smooth . . .

But I'm trying to beat ThomasW.'s 10

@Seth because $HOME is expanded by your shell. :P

You might be a Network Administrator if, after fooling around all day with routers and switches, you pick up the phone and dial an IP address.

user139252
8:16 PM
I don't know how many I have...

kos
@Terrance If you want a shell, sudo -i, it starts an interactive shell (and you don't need to worry about HOME). If you want to run a single command sudo -H is safe.

The best way to accelerate a Windows 98 machine is at 9.81m/s^2

@muru that's what I said a few messages earlier :P

When i was going for a chinese wedding, my buddy asked to give the 66 $ red pocket . ...Double smoothness , i.e. wishing newly weds (both of them) to have smooth life . . .

Or perhaps, if you want some Irony:

8:16 PM
@Daniel haha , have another star for that

Programmer’s Horror story:

Jack was a COBOL programmer in the mid to late 1990s. After years of being taken for granted and treated as a technological dinosaur by all the Client/Server programmers and website developers, he was finally getting some respect. He'd become a private consultant specializing in Year 2000 conversions.

Several years of this relentless, mind-numbing work had taken its toll on Jack. He began having anxiety dreams about the Year 2000. All he could think about was how he could avoid the year 2000 and all that came with it.

@kos OK, thank you! That makes a lot more sense. =)

@Seth ah..

user139252
Hey, I remember this one:

user139252
Jul 27 '15 at 15:17, by Heather Brown
It's the internet. The only private secret on the internet is a military man with a bad last name.

8:17 PM
@kos Are you sure? -H will set $HOME to /home/yourusername, not /root.

stop rolling the chat ! I'm trying to star stuff !

That is what is causing these issues.

@Seth no, it should set to the target user's home.
 -H, --set-home
             Request that the security policy set the HOME environment
             variable to the home directory specified by the target user's
             password database entry. Depending on the policy, this may
             be the default behavior.

@muru right, and no one is using root's password..

Modified version of the creation story:

• In the beginning God created the Bit and the Byte. And from those he created the Word.

• And there were two Bytes in the Word; and nothing else existed. And God separated the One from the Zero; and he saw it was good.

• And God said - Let the Data be; And so it happened. And God said - Let the Data go to their proper places. And he created floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks.

• And God said - Let the computers be, so there would be a place to put floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks. Thus God created computers and called them

8:17 PM
sudo -H -i
-------------------------------------------------------------- 02/11/16 13:17:10

/root

@Terrance -i overrides -H.

kos
~/tmp % sudo env | grep HOME
HOME=/home/user
~/tmp % sudo -H env | grep HOME
HOME=/root
~/tmp % sudo -i
~# env | grep HOME
HOME=/root

@Seth yes, and targetpw isn't set either

@Serg
Windows 95 is a 32 bit extension for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

But the target user is root, or whichever user was specified using -u

8:18 PM
@Seth Yes, but -H does not work standalone either

Something to ponder:
Little known fact about Middle Earth: The Hobbits had a very sophisticated computer network! It was a Tolkien Ring...

kos
@Seth Yes I'm sure, -H will set HOME to the taget user (which is what you want)

@muru ah, so it knows root is the target user and sets it according to root's pw entry?

user139252
Video is still loading...

@Seth yes, that's the definition of target user. O.o

8:19 PM
WOW, sudo -H -i and sudo -H -s return the exact same home folder, where sudo -s and sudo -i return different folders

I must have misunderstood/misread the manpage.
maybe I should go eat lunch..

@Daniel hehe, you have the type of humor that I cannot share with parents or friends - they won't understand . . . .Hence starred !
:XD

@Seth You and me both! I'm starving! =)

:27507678      -u user, --user=user
                 Run the command as a user other than the default target user
                 (usually root). The user may be either a user name or a
@Seth you should

8:21 PM
Thanks @Serg
My goal is to own the sidebar
I'm about halfway there
I mount my soul at /dev/null

@kos Thank you! Took me a bit to realize that TARGET user is ROOT, not the actual user. So, -H sets HOME to /root
I believe I got it now! :D

same ^

Linix is user-friendly. It's just picky about who its friends are.
@Serg
There are two major products of Berkeley, CA -- LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be strictly by coincidence.
Also, Those who do not understand UNIX are condemned to reinvent it, poorly.
UNIX was not designed to stop you from doing stupid things, because that would also stop you from doing clever things.

Ah, the classic !

@Serg like my physics teacher said on the first lesson we had in high school (long time ago) "Not a single thing I will tell you this year is true"

@Serg From Linus Torvalds : "Software is like sex: it's better when it's free".

@JacobVlijm very interesting . . . what exactly did he mean by that ?

Oh wow
there's a command line version of xkcd: uni.xkcd.com

@Serg well, what he meant, as he explained, is that all we do is work with models, assumptions, which will never end to develop...

8:34 PM

....Not what we understood :)

YES
THIS ONE IS AWESOME
rm -rf /bin/laden
@Serg UNIX is basically a simple operating system, but you have to be a genius to
understand the simplicity.
OK, I need to get back to class

that's good

So Windows 10 has a feedback app:

Windows 10 is actually pretty decent

@Daniel No, it's not
It seems nice for the first half year or so

It can run on as little as 256MB of RAM

@Daniel not really sanely

9:55 PM
But Windows 10 is slowly degrading over time

it has been needing at least 2GB of RAM here, even with turning off graphics stuff

No, but it will scale back its RAM usage so you can run heavier MC mods

and yes, it's constantly degrading

It's only getting better for me, but of course I have Enterprise...
Which is basically Windows 10 Pro on steroids

I can't open a ton of programs, my boot time is over 5 minutes, taskbar icons constantly disappear, autohide is glitchy as hell

9:56 PM
what's your system specs?
My boot time is always under a minute
And I have a dual-core 2.2GHz AMD Athlon x2 64, 3GB DDR2 800, and a Samsung 850 EVO SSD

@Daniel 8GB DDR3, GTX 950M, 1TB 7200RPM HDD, 1080p FHD TN screen, Intel 4000

with an R5 230 GPu
want to trade machines?
since mine runs fine?

nah
I want Windows 7 :(

Did it come with 10, or did you upgrade?

@ThomasW. To be fair, Windows 10 does something like Ubuntu, where the System process reserves RAM for use in other programs.

9:58 PM
Windows 10 tries to do as much as possible in advance
on some occasions it can be more efficient than XP
at least in my experiences
I'd venture to say that overall Windows 10 is the best of the worst series of operating systems out there

@Daniel Windows 8.1>>upgrade>>boot broke itself (only OS)>>clean reinstall>>product key blocked>>10+ hours with support to get a new key>>worked well for about three months>>now it's broken

That is, the best Windows out there

I'm good :p

10:00 PM
Mine cost me $90

If you want to buy me a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, that'd be nice :P

and for some odd reason I'm getting more performance running the same software???
I've got Home Premium
but no Ultimate

Can't do anything on Home Premium

you can with DLL patches

And I could also just pirate an Anytime Upgrade key :p

10:01 PM
like the RDP patch
or use KMS Auto
Now one thing I would love is a better GPU
I mean, the most graphics intensive thing I play is StarMade, but I'm running on a 1GB R5 230

I took a quiz

Kristoff who?

I feel like getting another star (true story): I was walking with a friend the other day. He asked me "Daniel, how come all your friends are girls, and they all seem to be interested in death, especially when it involves me?"

I told him "Well I figure it this way: The guys can't stand me, and most of the girls can't either. But the death women *love* me."
That's going to be my senior quote

Hello, could someone please add this to the following question: http://askubuntu.com/questions/65951/how-to-disable-the-touchpad
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I can't do it myself, because I don't have enough reputation.

It is the only way to disable touchpad permanently that worked for me. The other ways were only temporary:

xinput set-prop IDOFTOUCHPAD "Device Enabled" 0
synclient TouchpadOff=1

I am using LXDE and I was not able to automatically disable the touchpad by adding these lines to ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE/autostart or /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart with

@mkdrive2 are you running unity?

Q: What would be less taxing on an older system, a more old school system like debian or a lighter desktop environment like lxde?

munchschairSo I have 2008 Dell latitude e5400 laptop. It can be very slow and I am looking for a balanced OS to put on it. I have been using XFCE based ubuntu. My ex was married to me for 5 years, we had our kid, she always said she supported me and said things wouldn't change as I was going through my counseling

user139252
When I finally made the decision to transition last year, she decided she couldn't be with me

wow

user139252
It's alright, though. Her and I had quite a few differences that made it hard to be together, anyway. She liked the thermostat at 78, I need it at 65. She wasn't a huge fan of video games, I liked to play quite a few. Things like that

yeah

user139252

Now, I get to keep the house as cold as I like, more of my money goes to my interests, and I get to be true to myself :D

more video games is a good thing ;)

user139252
Especially when there are tons of second-hand stores around your new office that carry N64 cartridges

ever play a game called Mischief Makers? that was one of my favorites

I've never played N64, if I'm even saying that right :p

11:56 PM
its a classic treasure(video game company) game
Mischief Makers is a 1997 side-scrolling platform video game developed by Treasure and published by Enix and Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. The player assumes the role of Marina, a robotic maid who journeys to rescue her creator from the emperor of Planet Clancer. The gameplay revolves around grabbing, shaking, and throwing objects. There are five worlds and 52 levels, and the game is displayed in "2½D". The game was the first 2D side-scroller for the Nintendo 64, and Treasure's first release for a Nintendo console. The company began Mischief Makers's development in mid-1995 with little knowledge...

user139252
I have not played that. I will try to find it this weekend!

user139252
I'm currently searching for Majora's Mask, the expansion pack to play MM, and Paper Mario
