@Fabby you wish, but more and more people want the government to "take care of them". They can't and won't leave you alone if they're giving you "free" stuff.

Some country tried that from 1917 till 1992 or so...
It was called "communism" or something like that and it doesn't work...
(Nor does pure capitalism...)
We should come up with something in-between...
... something that has the best of both worlds. :-)

There is not best of both worlds. That's what the US has now and let me tell you, it does not work.

12:25 AM
blocking an IP with UFW is a major PITA

Somebody was booting a Linux distro last week on one of our lab computers, now workstation is unbootable
Freakin' people be stooped
@ByteCommander Correction: use vim and python

it does work (same as socialism) but only for as long as the person that started it is in charge. After that someone greedy will take over and the ideals will evaporate.
The Swiss system seem to work but that might be because of the somewhat low amount of people there. They have referenda on a lot of questions.

I agree on the Swiss system...

@Fabby The chinese system works too unless you are openly against the governement (...) Regionally people are chosen for office democratically and laws are made openly but the regime at the top enforce the long term. Rather harshly, But if you can follow the regime nothing is holding you back from a good life.
- what clearly does not work is the english system :P
- nor what we have in Holland, Election in march will have 65 parties ... and counting.
some idiots here started a party that believes the "ministry of defense" should be abolished and we need a "ministry of peace" D:

I never came here. :D

hey you not being here!

@Seth that reminds me of highschool, when I was into trigonometry because I had to use it to program small games :p

I remember downloading the damn prompts into my datacomm folder

Quote from my textbook: "Now suppose you enter such a WiFi jungle with your phone, tablet, or laptop, seeking wireless Internet access and a blueberry muffin"
Yes, I do seek blueberry muffins whenever there is WiFi
And if that place has coffee that's even better
" The Bandwidth of each of the 13 WiFi channels is actually 5MHz. How many WiFi channels does an 802.11g/n signal really occupy? Which channels therefore are really available for use, without interference from other channels?"
ugh . . .13 channels ?

@Serg um...

I'm confused here, badwidth of bgn wifi signal is supposed to be in reality 2.4 MHz

This list of WLAN channels is the set of legally allowed wireless local area network channels using IEEE 802.11 protocols, mostly sold under the trademark Wi-Fi. The 802.11 workgroup currently documents use in five distinct frequency ranges: 2.4 GHz, 3.6 GHz, 4.9 GHz, 5 GHz, and 5.9 GHz bands. Each range is divided into a multitude of channels. Countries apply their own regulations to the allowable channels, allowed users and maximum power levels within these frequency ranges. In some countries, such as the United States, licensed Amateur Radio operators may use some of the channels at much higher...
@Serg ^ useful pictures
^ the ranges
all within 2.4GHz, offset by MHz range items

right, and that's the same thing I'm saying , supposed to be like 2.4 Mhz for each channel. Why our prof says it's "actually 5Mhz" ?

@Serg because it is
you're confusing multiple terms
and concepts
the entire frequency spectrum for g/n is in the 2.4GHz range, with each central frequency of each channel offset by 5MHz from each other
2.412GHz is 1, 2.417GHz is 2, etc.
USA is weird
oops
so there's a central frequency for each channel, offset by 5MHz from each other, with individual overlapping frequency widths for each channel
you're not saying the same thing as your professor or the standard.

Just a guess but it sounds like a bad connection issue.
If so, my suggestion for him is BitTorrent.

Haven't seen that one in years. . .

What'd be the easiest way to write and execute sequence of curl commands in a script? I did write a bash script, but it didn't print the curl response.

On the contrary
If... PS/2 supported hotplug
which IIRC it did not

Hahhaha that's a famous error

12:35 PM
I am having trouble installing qtox..Can anybody help me
?

You better look for a different client. Qtox developers stopped to care about users. I have no idea what they are thinking, but the situation is bad.

@ByteCommander Can you tell me how to fix those broken packages ?

@reversiblean Then you wrote it wrong :P I mean that there's no reason why it wouldn't print it. Why not post a question with the script and see if we can work it out?

@terdon yup. you probably right. I get different outputs when on the terminal and when running from script

@reversiblean I'm guessing it's an issue with stderr and stdout. Are you redirecting the output of the curl command or the script anywhere?

12:45 PM
@rohith Not sure if you'll get happy with it, but please show the output of apt-cache policy qtox libavcodec57 libavcodec-extra57 libavdevice57 ... (replacing the ... with the remaining listed packages). Also, what Ubuntu release are you on? (lsb_release -a)

nope. btw it is simple as $ curl -vk localhost:8080/api/v1/projects
but always get different stripped output when running from script

And please paste your output here as plain text (don't forget to click the fixed font button after pasting and before sending though). That's better readable than screenshots.

@reversiblean You're leaving something out. There's no reason that command would behave differently in a script.
@reversiblean I just tried with a simple curl -v google.com and there's no difference when running through a script or directly. Or, rather, the only difference is what you get when running that command twice a few seconds apart (so some different values in time etc fields).

@ByteCommander Thanks :) rohith@rohith-pc:~$ apt-cache policy qtox libavcodec57 libavcodec-extra57 libavdevice57 libavformat57 libavutil55 libqt5core5a libqt5gui5 libqt5gui5-gles libqt5svg5 libswscale4

@rohith It can't work if you try to install the qtox version for 16.10 (Yakkety) but run 16.04 (Xenial).
Remove the qtox repo you added and add the correct one for Xenial.

Then try again.

Can anybody share the output of apt policy appstream please, preferably from 16.04?

There are a few things wrong with this screenshot from Android Device Manager
Because I don't own a Note 4 from India, and that picture is of a Note 5
There are also 4 Verizon Note 4s on my account...
Lol, my laptop is also there because of Remix OS

@Videonauth you might want to upgrade to 0.10.1 from backports. It contains a bugfix that gets rid of this annoying warning.
I described it in my answer askubuntu.com/a/859116/367990

which warning ?
when did they push that update as of now my machine was updated yesterday and i have actually no appstream metadata ignored messages

Smoky got it ! :)
who deletes it? Community?

@MarkYisri Smokey itself if the target post is deleted in time.

No, I mean who deletes the actual spam post? @terdon

@MarkYisri They get deleted automatically if enough people flag it as spam (5, I think)
Or a mod does it manually.
In this case, it was the spam flags.

So yes, community.

weird then that i can slip in spam flags on posts which have sometimes even -10 dv

6 flags (spam or rude or abusive): post is locked, deleted, and the author loses 100 reputation.
1 flag from a moderator has the same effect as 6 flags from normal users: instant destruction.

A: What are the “spam” and “rude or abusive” (offensive) flags, and how do they work?

KipWhat makes something spam and when should I flag it? A post should be marked as spam ONLY when it contains an unsolicited advertisement. It should NOT be marked as spam when: The answer contains no useful information, such as an answer that says “I don't care about your problem”. Flag an answ...

@Videonauth That is from an ubuntu 16.04 LXD container running on ubuntu 16.10 - the output before is from my ubuntu 16.10 host ! :) Good afternoon ! :)

@cl-netbox good afternoon to you too, did you open your advent calendar today ?

@Videonauth just came back from a walk outside ... weather is better than the last days ... until yesterday the calendar is checked ... now that you say it, I'll check it for today ! :)

2:50 PM
:)

@Videonauth This qemu calendar is a somewhat funny and quite a really nice idea ... don't know why they dropped it last year ... :)

well for me it is the first year, and yes its funny and some of the contents remind me of old days

@Videonauth yes it does indeed ... here you find the last one -> qemu-advent-calendar.org/2014 ! :)

2:57 PM
@Videonauth what does that mean ??? :D

@Videonauth awesome

@ByteCommander Hello and good afternoon ! :) Have you seen the appstream output you asked for ?

@cl-netbox Thats the new thing to do, not only verifying the username is unique as well making sure the password is unique
just seen on twitter

I saw it, but I wrote an "nvm" afterwards. Eggs after Easter... :)

@Videonauth hahaha ... there are things ... :D

2:59 PM
Well, one guy will still have "12345"...

yeah but imagine SE site, i really would love to know how many people are using the same password
and if you apply a wordlist check from the current breaches which happened (lets say up to 10 years back) you would end up with users having stronger passwords
Still, it would not prevent you from your page or service has other vulnerabilities

@Videonauth "security"

@Videonauth really ? hope not ... there are tools like keepassx that make it very easy to have a different password for every service - right ? :)

@cl-netbox yeah or tools that generate you cool passwords :)

@Videonauth exactly ... this is possible with keepaasx as well ! :)

3:11 PM
in my little python script I even included a wordlist check which allows you to have custom wordlists
and im actually collecting wordlists
having already about 6 GB of wordlists from current breaches and older breaches
and thats only the tip of the iceberg

What a coincidence I just wrote a simple password generator for an answer askubuntu.com/questions/859109/…

oooh cool

@ByteCommander yes, nice one!
On the other hand, while I'm not an expert, my gut feeling is that any solution that allows regenerating the same password is one hell of a security risk.
Still, that's a clever trick and it does what the OP asked for.

Well, he wants reproducibility.

If I'm commenting on a question, and the comments get too lengthy, how do I get the "This discussion has been moved to chat {link}, without having to manually create a room, and then manually go back to the original question and manually having to add that link?

3:22 PM
So the only source of randomness comes from the input, i.e. the three answers the user has to give.
It's still much more secure to generate such a pseudo-random password based on three simple secret answers than to just use a simple password.

@heynnema You don't, I'm afraid.
@ByteCommander Absolutely. I just feel (I stress that I am in no way a security expert) that it is always a risk to allow a password to be reused and it is a very minor annoyance to just generate a new one.
For one thing, any program that prints out a password is a risk.

You have to trust something. At least your own computer and the scripts on it that you wrote yourself.

@terdon Thanks for your response. Maybe in the future there will be an easier way to initiate chat.

@terdon I'm curious ... did you receive your new laptop in the meantime ? Good afternoon ! :)

@heynnema It's not too hard, really. The message comes up when you pass a threshold but, in the meantime, creating a room is pretty simple.
@cl-netbox No :( Probably in January.
@ByteCommander Don't get me wrong, I've upvoted your answer and it does exactly what the OP wants (better than they asked for, even). I'm just sort of thinking out loud.

3:28 PM
@terdon so let's hope for next month ... :)

:)

@terdon yeah... but they put the "Create a new room" button way at the bottom of all the existing chat rooms! It took me forever to find it. They should move that to the very top.

@heynnema Ah, yes, fair point. Might be on purpose to avoid having too many rooms created. Dunno.

3:55 PM
@terdon I smell a flame war ensue here: askubuntu.com/q/858888/522934 for all i can say this question is more hassle as useful
IMO
https://t.co/SukxDc75mj

@Videonauth Thanks, I just closed as a bug.
Although Rinz is probably correct.

@terdon I suggested a video to be taken

Obvious troll is obvious i just tested my 15.10 VM and there is no such thing

I'd say honest mistake, rather than troll but who knows.

@Videonauth she has a Twitter? Followed!
@terdon well if it's in two terminals...

4:00 PM
@Zacharee1 How will that help? You have no way of knowing if the OP pressed the UP arrow or just Ctrl+Ins to paste.

4:26 PM
Approve or reject this edit? Is it ok or adding too much? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/652247

@ByteCommander Looks great to me. I would improve it by adding a sudo to the dpkg command, but apart from that it's great. Adding value to the answer.

Im a bit torn apart on this normaly its fine to add value to a question, but that even should have been an answer itself

@Videonauth Why?
This was the answer that the editor found helpful, but they needed to figure out the extra steps for themselves. They did so and took the time to come back and improve the original answer. This is great!
Posting a new answer would just clutter up the site with yet another answer repeating the same thing with more detail.

im convinced

That was easy :)

4:35 PM
@Zacharee1 do your CVs

@terdon just because i worded my opinion, does not mean I'm stuck to it, I'm out of that age where I believe all my opinions are set into stone and not subject to be changed.

@Videonauth ?? I should hope so! Of course you are.

Q: Why does Docker reduce power usage on an Internet of Things device in this benchmark?

Aurora0001I've been interested in the applications of Docker on IoT devices such as Raspberry Pis. After reading A Performance Evaluation of Container Technologies on Internet of Things Devices, I was slightly confused by one of the results. In Table 1, the power consumption shown under Apache 2 Benchmark...

@ByteCommander great edit imho. I have "improved" it

if someone can answer it, i could hand out invitations to the beta i think

4:38 PM
when I say improved, I mean that was the button I clicked... hope I did actually improve it but idk haha
hmmm now I forgot why I came to the room

@Zanna :) sure to get a hug, here have one from me :))

@terdon not just a screen grab, an actual separate camera video.
@edwinksl nein

@Zacharee1 Yes, and? How can you know what made the text appear?

@Videonauth hugs heh that's a great reason :)

Even if you're videoing the keyboard, you can't know that Up hasn't been mapped to paste.

4:42 PM
But I remembered!
@MarkYisri Thanks for making the effort on this askubuntu.com/posts/859111/revisions :) but when you do a translation, you can ditch the old version as it will be available in the revision history so it's just noise in the post, and putting your name in it is adding more noise... I've edited it as I think it should be...
I voted "edit and reopen" but I think it should be closed as a dupe? ^

@Zanna Why reopen? That's still unclear. What "closed"? What happened? What was the output?

@Zacharee1 slacker

Oh, the Italian version said "it closed" not "it stuck". What stuck, then? And that's a pretty big difference.

If someone is interested in a closed beta invitation to IoT SE just holler and sen me your email via launchpad --> launchpad.net/%7Evideonauth/+contactuser
3

nice
i can also give out beta invitations if anyone is interested :)

4:49 PM
@terdon I think they just want to install flash and they are doing it wrong? I guess I should have just gone to the link and edited it. instead of editing it from the queue.

@Zanna No, I mean that despite the edit, the question is still unclear. As is so often the case with people who post in other languages, the language is the least of the problems. I could understand the original well enough and it was still unclear.
If that were posted now, as is, I'd still vote to close it as unclear, myself.

@terdon OK... I think it is a bad question sure, but my thought was their intention is clear enough and it could be a dupe... we have sooo many questions about that

Well, if you find it clear enough, it's your call.

:S well you know better than me I'm sure... but afaik they are trying to install a non-existent package (in current Ubuntu versions anyway) and so it's not hard to understand why it is not working...
goes back to messing stuff up

@Zanna Clearly I don't. That package doesn't exist huh? Fair enough then.

5:04 PM
:S I don't know if it answerable though. I don't disagree with you, just explaining what I did, idk if it was right and thanks for making me think harder about it

You know, one of the weirder things about being a mod is that when I express an opinion, people often think I'm laying down the law. It's very tricky for an opinionated bastard like myself.
PSA: If I am laying down the law from above, I'll make it clear. If not, assume I'm just being my opinionated self and my opinion is no more valid than anyone else's.

hehe I can understand that problem :) I totally get that you're giving your opinion and not laying down the law per se... but I respect your opinion and also I think folks get elected for reasons, so my first assumption will be that you know better than me what should be done with things.

They often get elected 'cause they've wasted more of their life amassing useless internet points than others. . . :P

^that and they do not share their points :D
sorry terdon im jus t in a funny mood today

5:21 PM
Heh, absolutely no problem

you say useless points but you can ban someone and make that someone sad :)
imaginary internet points have real consequences!!11!

eh we all love those useless internet points but I think folks think about more than that when voting for mods (looking at the comments) and I think the community has done a good job in the elections so far

Aww, shucks.

when is the next election

When one is needed. There's no set election time.
Which is great since elections tend to be very disrupting.
U&L has only ever had 2 elections in 6 years or so.

5:30 PM
ah
what does "when one is needed" mean?
presumably whenever the current mods think they need more help?

Yeah, that's about it.

can someone pin my invitation offer to the star wall please

this is what i was talking bout
thank you

two people starred it, but do you think it should be actually pinned? You need a room owner to do it

nah that was what i meant, no need to be pinned but wanted it on the star wall
not everyone is reading the transcript

5:45 PM
@terdon well it could be demonstrated that it doesn't copy by pressing is a few times.

exactly why i said this question is going to be more hassle as being added value for the site, firstly i confirmed on a VM that 15.10 vanilla not behaves that way, so either he has messed up his system pretty badly, re-scripted the sudo, or hes simply trying to troll by saying this is what happens to him

@Zacharee1 Not if you map it to yank-pop :P Anyway, point is that expecting people to record a video to prove that they experience what they claim to experience is not a very practical solution. And how would you have a video clearly showing both what key they're pressing and what appears on the screen?
@Videonauth He probably entered the password once by mistake, so now it appears when pressing Up.

yes or that

@terdon you zoom out? You're nitpicking wayyyyy too much here

seems to be a faint hearted user if he feels being bullied by fkraiem
and now reposting a question again because the first is going to be closed is not a nice move either

JohnnyBizzleIf you don't want to help me with this question, just ignore it. My website is served from /opt/lampp/htdocs http://127.0.0.1/ now is Forbidden

@Videonauth you do the dupe this time
I don't want to risk it because
> If you think objective aid is bullying, you are a very fortunate person.
Wat
Fine, mobile

I just marked the second one as dupe and wait now for @terdon to wake up and hit it with a big hammer of doom
because just reposting a question is a no no here

Oy vey

Hammered I see

yes and hopefully for good

His attitude confuses me
If you had to guess, how old would you say he is?
Just from his language?

6:01 PM
yeah well maybe he had a bad day or something and now what he tries as well wont work, but no need to bring personal mood into comments accusing others to not want to help etc
from his language, not sure my guess is late teen or early tween

I checked the site he linked in his profile, and he says he worked for the NHS for 12 years. He's an adult...

on the other side no age range is really known to not be like that
well i not checked, i just guessed

good morning

@Videonauth I thought that too at first.

@Zacharee1 That's an unwarranted assumption. Clearly you have no experience with the NHS.

6:05 PM
@terdon well he also has photos of a bike ride, and stories of his travels through Japan and Europe :p
Split screen is fun

What i wonder is why are people around Christmas time to blow fuses like that, i mean ok i seen a lot of drama on AU over the year but Christmas-time clearly tops it.
