Ok so assuming a sector size of 512B a GPT partition table uses LBAs from 0 to 33 inclusive, which amounts to 34, which multiplied by the sector size amounts to 17408 bytes for the primary GPT and LBAs from -0 to -32 inclusive, which amounts to 33, which multiplied by the sector size amounts to 16896 bytes for the secondary GPT

So to fully wipe a GPT partition table: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=1 count=17408 && dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=1 seek=<seek> where <seek> = <drive_size> - 16896

Mind that the picture is misleading in numbering LBAs in the secondary GPT partition table, it should perhaps be LBA-0 and so one

I have a usb spectrometer.
when I plug it in, I cant find the addtitions to /dev/
but, I know its doing something. dmesg lists some stuff but doesnt say what device it is.
when i do

ls /dev/* | wc -l with it plugged in I get 837
and 832 when the device is unplugged.

I suspect it is a character device. How can I figure out which character device(s) it is?

on a mac, cmd + right moves to the end of the line and I can't figure out how to set that up in settings

I was on earlier today, asking about USB drives and the problems I was having making a Ubuntu bootable on my brand new Win8 laptop. One USB drive trashed, one hanging on boot. I got home from work, fired up my Ubuntu desktop, used that to make a bootable USB.....
and I'm typing this from a live Ubuntu session on my Win8 laptop. :)

It all worked like a charm.

Well, my computer is having very strange UDP-UNKNOWN communications with a mail server through Skype that with my current configuration should not be happening! Plus, the fact that the Skype process is not running should not mean that it is still listening on a port and sending and receiving data!
