Yeah. I feel a lot better when I sleep in the smaller chunks. I think waking up gets you back some of the wasted time in between where you would be having REM cycles.

Q: Running X without root

GolDDranksI have a kiosk-style host running Ubuntu Server 14.04. I'm trying to set it up to play some videos, TV-like. Sometimes it needs to play Youtube playlists and other web-based video streaming services etc., so a browser window seems to be necessary. For this purpose I installed a barebones X.org w...

12:50 PM
How goes it @terdon
So it begins ... we just started the next leg of our journey to the wall-e humans.

@Pandya: It was meant as a conglomerate of all. and something KISS that we can refer newbies to.
@hbdgaf: You're the perfect medieval city watchman! ;-)

Did I fart in your general direction or something?

1:06 PM
:) You sleep in chunks
Perfect for guarding the city walls! ;-)
(that's how my mind works: it sometimes sees correlations where there are none)

Oh, that. Yes. I have to for reasons already stated. I think it's because I'm almost always on high alert biologically, but I'm not sure how to "fix" that.

askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/227138 mfw people approve horribly obviously wrong substitution of nautilus -> evolution

:D There's nothing to fix!
It's an advantage!
During a zombie apocalypse, you'll be one of the survivors! ;-) >:)

@ulidtko that one should be seen by a mod. it indicates robo-reviewing.
@Seth ^^ just putting it out there.
@Fabby I've gotten lazy on my cardio. Maybe it will make up for it ;)

do I flag it?

1:09 PM
Just roll back.

already done

No need to flag. I pinged one of the mods. They'll see it now.

Everyone is allowed to make mistakes! Even Oli!
>:)

I'm worried that it's too late; there's no notification when someone else edits your posts

@Fabby That wasn't Oli, it was Olli. Look closely.

1:10 PM
yeah I recognize forgiveness
and yeah, @oli ≠ @olli
:]

Everyone is allowed to make mistakes!

agreed.

:D :D :D
Thanks for pointing that out though...

Oli
I made a mistake once. I corrected it.

thumbs up
although I'm really mad right now at Gnome guys
they AGAIN broke documentation URLs
with no obvious replacements

1:13 PM
What is it some people don't understand about 301 redirects... If they did that, then there could be a site crawler that checks links for 301s and auto-fixes links.

there should be some kind of a carma mechanism specifically for punishing people who aggravate link rot.
the point is that there can not be 301s, because they literally remove docs from their site
or lose them somehow
not only URLs change, but content changes too

It's okay to remove a doc if there's a new version. The problem is you can't find the new doc. So a 301 would work there...

and not that the content changes were in the direction of expanding...
yeah, I can't find the new version.
I doubt that it's even published actually.

Is this about the nautilus extension thing still?
I think the Gnome folks may be taking out some of the customization stuff on purpose, so themes are harder to manipulate, extensions for some things are harder to get at, etc on purpose. It's not necessarily that they're wiping out documentation. It's that they're trying to make behavior more consistent by making it harder to tweak and accidentally break stuff. I'm not against that, but for someone that doesn't see that's what they're doing, I understand the frustration.
@ulidtko I wonder how many bugs the whole of the Gnome project gets that are user tweaks that turn in to "no repro" on a base install?

yeah, I'm aware of that hot discussion
but here, as an answerer/community supporter, I don't care about their politics. There's demand for extensibility, there's doc (at some point), and now things (silently!) turned into link rot. That's not nice for whatsoever reason.

1:23 PM
I agree. It would be nicer to have something like a "DEPRECATED" banner at the top.
Is it in the wayback machine?

how about keeping the doc, but placing a big fat warning plate... yeah, exactly what you propose too

Q: Referring to users with special characters in their names

Andreas UnterwegerI just tried replying to a comment by typing "@Luís: " and submitting it. After submission, the user name as well as the @ symbol disappeared. I tried editing the comment twice, but the "@Luís" part kept disappearing. Even deleting the comment and reposting it did not help. Since I already poste...

BEST. GRUMPY CAT. WALLPAPER. EVER.

@ulidtko I'm not sure that solves it though. If the problem is that it still works... but they don't want people to do it, then actually removing it is really close to the only solution.
@RPi_Awesomeness THAT.IS.AWESOME.

1:25 PM
@hbdgaf ikr xD
I gotta find that in actual wallpaper file form, not a screenie...

On the other hand, there was a news story somewhere that they were switching to a webkit backend, so things could get better?

the brand is damaged forever
they should roll out a new webbrowser brand.

I'm not sure that's possible. Might be a good idea. Maybe a Bing-browser if they want to couple their search engine to their browser?
@RPi_Awesomeness ^^
Or do you want the internet explorer icon gone too?

not sure if bundling browser+websearch is okay from fair trade perspective
they're in "market dominator" position legally, and are bound by various antitrust stuff

As long as you're allowed to change the search thing and it's not locked, it's just branding. So, no fair trade impact.

1:32 PM
sounds reasonable
although it still requires some education on users part. Anyone seen people call the big blue "e" as "the internet"? could be same with Bing.

@ulidtko I think the way they could fix that is to take a horrifyingly large list of sites IE didn't render right. And on launch day for their "new webkit version" make fun of themselves. "Look how awful our last browser was... but seriously guys, we went open standards and it renders right now. Check it out. IE reborn"
Self deprecating humor is often the easiest path to redemption.

yeah, could be a strong and respectable move

It'll never happen though. Too much like the right thing to do.

:)

That logic doesn't apply exclusively to MS. It applies across the board.

1:39 PM
@blade19899: Do you keep the 0AD page updated??? >:) (upvoted both)

@ulidtko Take, for example, the HUGE big box store migrating from solaris to opensuse. I like that they did it, but now some of our handheld screens have debugging output about segfaults. So, code that never should have worked in the first place, but somehow did, is now telling on itself. So, it's ALL mixed bag.

Q: What package conventions are there for ubuntu?

verpfeiltIt's hard to describe this question. Let's look at an example: The package blender depends i.e. on blender-data. I looked into both packages. blender contains only the application, a .desktop file and something like that, while blender-data also contains the application icons and so on. If I dow...

@fabby: far too short >:-D you can do better
I would assume GUI/non-GUI a convention: non GUI tools are often re-usable for different GUIs

@Rinzwind : The one I just did about package management???

avconv is a big example. so is pulse audio/alsa audio
we have 1 pulse audio and several audo players :)

2:01 PM
> edited yesterday

:-) I saw that's why I added the ">:)" :P

Forget what ">:)" means?
> An emoticon that means devil.

@hbdgaf: on it!

@hbdgaf No, that's fine :D
Hrm. eOS Freya beta doesn't want to shut down after I installed it in vbox.
It's stuck at * Stopping early crypto disks

2:07 PM
It's probably something that lives on a given disk trying to shut itself down. Happens all the time.
Think: I can't unmount that because it's in use. What's using it? Me.

@hbdgaf it goes, it goes :)

@hbdgaf Yeah.

@RPi_Awesomeness I would suspect the solution to whatever problem you're having is to create a ramdisk, relocate the process that won't let go of disk there, and wash-rinse-repeat.

Well...I'm on eOS Freya..having some issues with the display size though... it's super tiny

Not my thing really, just trying to point you towards a solution so you could get over the hump. Good luck ;)

2:17 PM
@hbdgaf Oh, no, that's fine :) Thanks. I just force-rebooted it and everything's fine
There also doesn't seem to be a way to scroll to the right or the left in Midori....
...and System Settings crashes whenever I try to use one of the options...

@Fabby I 'm done updating it tho. Thats why last few revisions, I edited so that i don't have to update the latest release numbers, release dates, and such.

Better, my lords and masters? ;-)
@blade19899: good man! ;-)

Only line i want to edit now is:
> The above ppa, supports only the following versions of Ubuntu: Utopic (14.10), Trusty (14.04), Precise (12.04).
In the future that line is gonna be incorrect.
Don't know how to rephrase it

@Fabby I wasn't telling you what to do. I was just telling you what I thought would make it a good answer. Still, it has an upvote it didn't before ;)

2:25 PM
I'm an advocate of the KISS methodology myself, but if both you and Rinzwind tell me I can do better, well then I'l do better! ;-)

"The official 0 A.D. PPA holds packages only for the supported Ubuntu releases. Not End Of life releases."
That sounds about right.
To editing i go

@Fabby I added some detail to your answer. Hopefully that helps.

It took me 53 revisions, but i think i really hit the nail with the latest one: How do I Install 0 A.D.? revisions 53
minor within the five minute limit
In my website i also added a install from source section, you guys think it would add something to the Q/A here on Ask Ubuntu?

I've put it in it's own section and dumbed it down a bit. ;-)
@hbdgaf I didn't want to take out too much of your description because it's excellent, but most users are not developers and developers already know, so would you be terribly offended if i just took out "It's common practice to break headers out in to a -dev package"??? :/

I won't be offended at all however you change it. I just dropped in what I thought could be said there. If you want to reduce it, that's totally okay. I just put there what I would want to read there.

2:48 PM
@hbdgaf: as you're gone, I've deleted it, but I will not be terribly offended if you rolled back one version! ;-)

I'm not gone, but I don't see where you deleted it ;)
Oh, nm. I see what you mean. Totally fine though.

3:00 PM
@ulidtko I'm think that's what they are doing...

Anyone have any idea why this is the biggest eOS Freya will go in Vbox?
^ actual size.

@RPi_Awesomeness a BETA OS :) never touch those xD

@blade19899 Yeah, but I had a similar issue with Windows 10...

what is the open document format LibreOffice supports? msofice has doc... LibreOffice has .odv :/ cant remember

.odf/.odt

3:12 PM
@RPi_Awesomeness Thanks!

LibreOffice supports several different types
@blade19899 np :)
@blade19899 You know 0 AD pretty well. Do you think I should install from the PPA, or just go with the default in the repos?

@RPi_Awesomeness Repos has alpha 15. PPA has Alpha 17. 17 has a few more features, but, both are still alpha releases.
Meaning both will lag a bit. Its an ongoing problem with 0ad.

@Fabby Please check your email.

I would suggest to download alpha 17, as you can play with the new features. But, don't expect one to be beter than the other

@blade19899 Kewl

3:17 PM
@chili555 Opening... (Good pictures!!!)

Thx!

@Fabby Could you share those with us? or are they naughty pictures? :)

LOLOL

Holy crap. 509MB of files for 0AD. That's an all-nighter download

@RPi_Awesomeness Thats the data files. Graphics and such.

3:20 PM
@chili555: Cool dude! ;)

@blade19899 Yeah...dang

@blade19899: What are you talking about???

Huh. Windows 10 preview has a much larger resolution than eOS Freya. Strange.
Something I'll have to research

Ah! Well, since my last system restore a month or so ago, haven't reinstalled it yet! :(

3:22 PM
@Fabby I hope it will be helpful. Feel free to add your thoughts and send it back.

Too busy with AskUbuntu!
@chili555: I like it! Incorporating Oli's Meta answer.
And about the credit: I'm not even sure if I'm the one going to post it, maybe I'll have Oli do it!
"you can accomplish anything in life as long as you don't care who gets the credit"

Another thing I'm noticing about eOS is the lack of a minimize button...

(Franklin Roosevelt if I'm not mistaken)

Hey, there we go.
Had to manually install Guest Additions, but I gots it working.

Creeper Stalker picture much?

@RPi_Awesomeness really I can set .mp4 as wallpaper??
O.o
2
A: How to set a .mp4 as a Wallpaper?

RPi_AwesomenessWell, it depends on what you're willing to do. You can actually set your background as the video that's playing in VLC. Granted, you'll have to have VLC playing constantly and have the video on loop, but you'll get the desired effect. There's also the side affect that you lose your icons, but...

Does anyone know a good article/documentation about the odf format/structure. I wanna know all the bells and whistle as i am planning something and i need to know all about them:)

3:56 PM
@KasiyA Yup :D
It's really not the best, but it works.
@KasiyA Gimme a sec, I'll upload a quick vid to YT

Q: close reason doesn't match

Elder GeekI was reviewing Remote workstation management and chose "too broad" as a closure reason. I make it a point to do my own analysis and don't blindly agree with previous close voters so I found the ...

@ElderGeek I do not see how its unlcear. To broad for a simple answer since there are too many good ways to do a remote install.

4:32 PM
@KasiyA Here
Sry about the strange video speeds, GTK RecordMyDesktop records in strange FPS and thus causes strange speeds in when rendered in Kdenlive.
The screen recording is ~19 FPS, while the project is set to 24 FPS - so the speed of the screen recording is a bit off.

4:59 PM
@hbdgaf ooh, yeah. not good.
Unfortunately it happened so long ago it's a bit late for me to do anything about it. I don't believe either reviewer is active on the site anymore anyway.
Thanks for catching it though, I'll keep it in the back of my mind.

That's not important.

Because we have mods here flags aren't needed

Flags are for use whenever someone feels they need them.

Whoever flagged the post "No!" with an offensive flag. I don't think the word "No!" can be offensive in this context. The other flags were more or less valid, but try to think about what you're flagging. An emphatic denial is not really offensive
2

Yeah, okay
@HenryFlemingerThomson Why don't you cool off for a couple hours?
For the rest of the room, don't be afraid to flag if things like these happen. Although you should appoint room owners who can kick trolls without causing much noise to everyone else :)

That's up to your regular mods, though.

Despite doubling the size of my Qt 5.4 PPA, I'm still running out of space.

7:13 PM
Have a great day everyone :)

I'm not a moderator on Ask Ubuntu, but I am a chat mod. and I am frequently around here.
Honestly, I just arrived here this morning and I have no clue what's going on.

Well, all the blues are chat mods, but if you're a regular, you're better equipped to handle things.
@NathanOsman Great! Sounds like you've got a good start on restoring conversation.

@NathanOsman yeah, you missed something strange... pinged some of the regulars as soon as it was getting out of hand: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/19518842#19518842

Are you all feeling OK now? Should I move on, or do you want me to keep an eye out?

@KitFox I suspended him for two hours
So it should be okay for at least that time :P

7:17 PM
Yes, I saw.

I think we're okay.
Some of the other regular mods here will be arriving shortly.

Well, you've got your diamond and if you need back-up, you know where to find us.
tips hat

I do, thanks for popping in.
On a completely unrelated note: does anyone know what determines the length of time between when a build in a PPA completes and when the packages are published?
I've tried to discern some sort of pattern but it still seems completely random to me.
It can range anywhere from 5-30 minutes, and frankly, the delay is a nuisance.

ok, accidently clicked OK, on this in review: askubuntu.com/a/573311/47291
looking closer, question has nothing to do with wubi...

7:34 PM
@NathanOsman I suspect it's just a batch/cron that runs at your max delay interval or cache-ing catching up. I would also suspect glancing at the launchpad source would NOT help since the core source is open, but it's stated pretty outright that most of the "worker glue" and configuration is left out of the source.

Yeah.
