@ParanoidPanda My friend has a real old cannon at home.
They use it for Sylvester to mow the neighbors' flowers... ;)

user136984
@ByteCommander Could they lend it to me with an explosive canon ball and some gun powder? Because there is someone I know, who could really do with one exploding in their face! >:D :P

user136984
Because I don't currently have any circuits to slap their face with... :D

user136984
And long-range is so much better, but it's even better when you do it short range when it's meant to be long-range and then really... BOOM! >:D :P

I don't think that thing is shippable to the UK from Germany...

user136984
@ByteCommander Ah, well, will have to just make do with a computer virus! >:D One that makes a canon appear on his screen and then has the canon ball blasts out his screen goes black, and then BOOM!

7:07 PM
Sure thing. Try that!

user136984
But I really wish that I would not getting cached versions of his website in my cache, because I'm not actually going to it! I only did once, and that was in error! ;D :P

user136984
But it's probably good that I got emails with it and it appeared in my cache for otherwise probably would have never looked it up and got a confirmation that it was him! :D

user136984
@ByteCommander Well, I have an account there, but I don't think that I have ever used it.

user136984
Maybe I should though!

user136984
7:10 PM
:D

@ParanoidPanda Me too! ;D
Seemed to be above my level...

user136984
@ByteCommander: I just sometimes don't know where to start on a new site, and especially a new chat room, sometimes they end up hating me! ;D :P But luckily not any SE site, although I think that the English Use and Language SE site chat room thinks that I'm a troll because I tried some slang on them, and neither they, nor I knew what it meant! ;D :P

facedesk

user136984
@ByteCommander Is that like facepalm?

user136984
I always think of palm trees and faces when people say facepalm! ;D :P

user136984
7:19 PM
And how do you do the bold and the other styling in chat, I tried with stars but it didn't work for me...?

*italic* or _italic_
**bold** or __bold__

user136984
bold

***both*** or ___both___

user136984
Oh!

user136984
How do you manage to do it then without it getting styled?

user136984
7:20 PM
italic

user136984
Panda

user136984
Cool!

user136984
:D

@ParanoidPanda He's using backticks :P

With ` code

user136984
7:21 PM
Oh...

user136984

Q: Isolating some CPU cores reduce average CPU usage of game servers

avi9526Hardware: FX8320 (8 cores) @ 4.4GHz, 16GB I run 10 TF2 game servers. Few days ago I isolated some CPU cores with line in linux grub config: isolcpus=5-7 The strange thing - individual CPU cores seems to be loaded for ~50% - which is same as before, when all 8 cores was available. And average CP...

user136984
But now it's really getting on my nerves! Why is this stupid page appearing in my cache?! Well, not that page, but the information in that message. It let me track down who it was, but now it's really served its purpose! Why can't it just leave me alone?! I don't even know why it's appearing there, because I'm definitely not going to it!

user136984
It was appearing in my cache too when I had Google Chrome, so must be my email program or something, probably an email he sent me that just got stuck somewhere or something...

user136984
7:27 PM
And it even comes back after I clear my cache!

user136984
@ByteCommander: What's an emoticon that I can use here to show that I am pissed off and angry? Something that people will understand to be that. Because I've never seen anyone use one when they are feeling like that! ;D :P

@ParanoidPanda >:(
>:-(
>:-[

user136984
Then >:( >:-( >:-[ it is!

user136984
@ByteCommander: But I think that the one with the square bracket looks meaner so I think that I will stick with that!

user136984
:D :P

7:32 PM
@RPiAwesomeness the copper heatsinks for my RPi 2 arrived... finally!

Hi, question on kubuntu
I just updated to fglrx-updates from command line.
and now I can't enter to plasma 5
when I enter the password
it always comes back to the login screen.
I suspect something is crashing.
has anyone seen this ?
with their Kubuntu 15.04 installation ?

user136984
@user994572: Why don't you post it as a question on the main site?

yes...I'll do that. Just thought since this is a new release someone would have already encountered it.

I see your Pi and raise it 2?

7:43 PM
I added the copper heatsink in the middle.
Now I can try overclocking it >:)

you could have overclocked it without the heatsink

It gets pretty hot here in the summer :P

Ever heard of climate control?

This is an apartment building :P

Even better, put a big hole in the floor and let your neighbor pay for the AC

7:50 PM
We live on the top floor, so a hole would cause even more heat to come in :P

I declared that you are screwed then...lol

@NathanOsman Woo!

I've set it to 1,000 MHz now.

@NathanOsman you might find this of use :-D
Visual Studio is coming to Linux?

HUH???
Sure enough.
K, I'm totally downloading that.
And we absolutely must review it on our blog.
(P.S. it would have been nice to include a DEB or at least use .tar.gz instead of .zip but I won't complain.)

7:58 PM
What is in the Zip?

It's still downloading...

Well Microsoft has to compress everything whether it needs it or not...

Yeah, but a zip file?

It's Microsoft, it doesn't have to make sense...

@RPiAwesomeness I'm running "stress --cpu 4 --timeout 60" to see how high the temp. goes at 1000 MHz.
What's considered too hot?

8:04 PM
Why is zip bad?

Poor compression compared to gzip/LZMA.

over used propitiatory piece of garbage...

What about 7z?
That should be pretty good I heard.

7z uses LZMA.

@kos Sorry... I tend to take things literally...

8:05 PM
The Vorlon is back in the house! :D
How do your Docker studies go on?

Everyone that has close votes... Some more needed here
@ByteCommander Meh... :(
Can't be arsed now... Too tired.

^--- contents

lol nothing useful

kos
@Fabby np I wanted to know if evertyhing went smoothly, during my test everything went fine

@Fabby What's that in proper English?

8:08 PM
@kos You shouldn't doubt yourself! Thanks again!
I wish I could upvote twice!

kos
@Fabby Ok nice to hear!

@ByteCommander Auf English, "arschen" = "Ist egal"

okay...
learned something today.

When is windows 10 coming to the pi?

Same time it's coming everywhere else, most likely.
And the ZIP file was corrupted :(
Gotta re-download.

8:11 PM
@Fabby Please don't post duplicate comments askubuntu.com/a/162003/44179

@ByteCommander Oder "bemühen"...
@Seth That was Eliah...

@Fabby He posted his 7 hours before you posted yours.
Once there is a comment explaining the issue it's just rude for people to add another.

Ah!
Got it...

If you want, you can read this MSE post for more details:

Q: Does a not-an-answer 'answer' benefit from the same comment repeated five times?

Jonathan LefflerConsider the following trail (question Unrecognized rule error, but you'll need 10K rep to see what I'm talking about since the non-answer is deleted): Does the offender learn from the repetition, or would it be sufficient to give the canned message just once? Note: there is no dispute that i...

@Seth OTOH, my canned comments are more explanatory then the canned site comments...
Reading anyway...

8:15 PM
What should happen here? It's the only answer, and it gives the solution, but it is worded as a thank-you in reply to a comment that should (if only in hindsight) have been posted as an answer. Should I edit it so it's clearly an answer? Or should I vote to delete it, and ask the commenter to post their own answer... and then possibly post a CW answer if they don't?
My inclination is to edit it to make it clearly an answer (the commenter could've posted their suggestion as an answer, and chose not to, after all). But I am not sure what is best.

Q: How shall we report bugs in the new design?

guntbertAre the "answers" to Minor site design updates still monitored or should we post standard bug reports (aka "questions")?

@Fabby Sure, so use them instead of the default when you get there first, but please don't post them if someone else has already addressed the issue.

@EliahKagan I vote "yes" ;-)

kos
@EliahKagan Not an experienced user here, but it looks like the best thing for the site's sake despite the purpose of the OP

@Seth OK... I'm not promising anything but to TRY to remember...

8:17 PM
@Fabby Thank you!

@Seth ;-) Feel free to kick me again if I offend you some more... ;-)

I feel for the poor OPs that get 3 people on their back for making a simple mistake, no matter how nice those 3 people are.
Makes 'em feel ganged up on :(
@EliahKagan I think just edit it. As you pointed out the commenter decided to post a comment instead of an answer and it's better for the site.

@Seth :D :D :D That'll make me want to remember... Food for a mod Q&A on meta???

You don't know if the commenter will respond to a comment asking for them to expand or post their own answer..
@Fabby We already have one, but even after two periods of being featured people still aren't following it :(

@Seth If I review LQ and delete with selecting an explanation: Will there appear the canned comment once again or does the system detect it and does not add another one?

8:19 PM

Q: PSA: When reviewing, don't post duplicate (and near-duplicate) comments!

Eliah KaganAs jrg♦ said (pinned in main chat): Hey folks who use "canned" comments: If you see one thats already there that expresses the same general idea, don't add another one. Thanks. :) This has been happening a lot lately, and I'm pretty sure it's mainly because many people are not using the new...

Sounds good, I'll edit the post shortly to make it clearly an answer. (I'll keep attribution to the comment in the post in some form.)

I want a taco!

@ByteCommander It's supposed to do the latter, but it doesn't usually. If there's already a comment please just use "no comment needed". All that dialogue does is add a comment so it isn't hurting anything else (like internal stats or something)
@TheX mm. Me too!

Okay, I will remember that.

@ByteCommander The review comments are only as a convenience to allow reviewers to communicate with post authors (and any bystanders who happen to see them). They're not a way of voting on the post, so if the post already had a comment expressing the same general idea as you'd express, you can just click Delete without selecting a canned comment. (The default is to not post any comment.)

8:21 PM
Good. I felt like I should always chose a reason and seom times when I checked, no duplicate commend appeared.
But after that talk, I was not sure any more.

@ByteCommander Right. They tried to make it not post a comment if one already existed but it seems to be broken..

Oops.
Wrong image
There we go.

Wow, nice.

:21377441 My apologies... I'll bang my head against the wall 3 times repeating the words:
"I   W I L L   N O T   G A N G    U P    O N   U S E R S ! ! !"

So how did you install it?

8:26 PM
;-)

@Fabby Code formatting hates replies.

@Fabby :-)

kos
To be honest I prefer Visual studio to say Eclipse, I wouldn't mind the full version coming to Linux

@TheX Download the ZIP and run ./Code in the extracted directory.

@Fabby Actually it would be preferable to say it only one time, or not at all if someone else has said it first. :) :)

8:27 PM
@ByteCommander yeah, but if I don't use it, the extra spaces are removed...
@EliahKagan :P ;-)

@Fabby ^^ :D
We also already had a facedesk today.

:D

It uses Chromium???

8:31 PM
Uh-oh. Markdown breaks links... :P

@ByteCommander They don't render right when they contain backslashes, apparently.

@NathanOsman lie! that is impossible it is a microsoft product!

yes... But why the heck do they use backslashes anyway?
Microsoft... :P

user136984
Well, goodnight everyone!

user136984
And I hope that I don't get any more emails from my evil nemesis! ;D :P

8:42 PM
Wow.
Tried Visual Studio Code. First impressions is it's not bad.

And it supports a ton of languages.

I haven't figured out how to make it hide .pyc files yet.

Those should be in your .gitignore :p

j0h
can I get a libusb tutorial?
i tried http://www.dreamincode.net/forums/topic/148707-introduction-to-using-libusb-10/
but it fails to build. Compiles though. how to I add a linked library to g++?

8:45 PM
@Seth They are.
But they are still showing up.

Oh.
It doesn't read the .gitignore?
/fail

Well... just because you want Git to ignore it, doesn't mean you don't want to ever edit it.
They stole the command palette from Sublime :P

@NathanOsman Indeed :P
What you can't beat, steal!

It also does multi-cursor and Emmit, so that's cool.

btw, how do you open that command palette with a keyboard shortcut in atom?

8:47 PM
@Seth you split it

Light theme:

@NathanOsman ooh, finally a decent light theme.
I could never find one for atom I liked.

I have to go pee...

is this too much or acceptable @Seth askubuntu.com/posts/616067/revisions

@TheX Then please do.

8:50 PM
I think I might...

@Rinzwind hmm
not sure.

yeah that was my 1st sentiment too: hmm

That sounds like it has a high probability of being mint specific.

I know

8:51 PM
You can't.
Sorry.
But maybe you could improve some of their products!

@Seth well they can. Make Windows open source >:-D
we'd have a laugh every day :D
like this one ->
    String osName = System.getProperty("os.name");
     if (osName.startsWith("Windows")) {
         isWindows = true;
         if (osName.startsWith("Windows 9") ||
             osName.startsWith("Windows Me"))
-oops- we say :D

o.O
Why should Windows assume it is not running Windows? Or is that from a program?

@ByteCommander That's a Java snippit irrc.
Not native Windows code.

@ByteCommander no you missed the relevant part
this
if (osName.startsWith("Windows 9") ||

8:55 PM
is why they went from windows 8 to windows 10 and skipped 9 l;)

OH! :) Finally I got it!

they are testing here for windows 95 and 98 :D

Well I just learned that VS Code is built on Electron.
I guess MS can't even write their own app..

electron?! why

I feel like posting another face-object picture...

8:58 PM
Looks similar to Brackets.
@NathanOsman No idea!

@Seth That's what Atom is based on.

@TheX I finished the underground, we've got a path from my house to the main castle!

@NathanOsman My point.
@ByteCommander Make it extra good ;)
This one deserves it.

Okay... I go searching then. :)

ARGH.

9:03 PM

@NathanOsman Sounds like me debugging this stupid attachment code

I hate it when "Flag as inappropriate" is a really big link and there's no confirmation.
Very very easy to accidentally click.

Nice @Mateo.

You may chose:
Facestairs, facerock or polar bear facepalm?

9:07 PM
Aww man. I just found out Yo-Yo Ma will be in Vancouver Friday and there is no way I can make it :(
@ByteCommander return randomNumber(3)

@Seth :(

You did not decide, so I posted all three...

This is going to be a "Happy Microsoft Bugs" party...

9:12 PM
@NathanOsman Do you think you could look at my code and see why the attachments aren't actually being sent? I can see it in the message source, but Thunderbird doesn't actually display the attachment.
Hmmm...

Maybe try sending one of them to me so I can see what is being sent.

Thunderbird doesn't see it...but GMail does...
Okay.

sweet, I will check it out if I ever get my computer running again.
actually I can do it now...maybe

@NathanOsman Sent.

@TheX What has happened to it?

9:17 PM
That's so weird. Perhaps it's an issue with the way Thunderbird reads emails, 'cause GMail sees it but Thunderbird seemingly ignores it.

@ByteCommander I tried to update to the latest release (not todays release) of Windows 10... and all hell broke lose...

@Rinzwind @Seth Why don't we invite @Serg into the chat to discuss???
(his mint removal edit)

@RPiAwesomeness It came... but isn't showing up as an attachment.

Windows... Who would ever have expected that it could crash...

(Like the actual content of the attachment is indeed there.)

9:19 PM
@NathanOsman Yeah...it's so weird.
Gmail sees it, but nothing else does...

Lemme see if I can get to the bottom of this...

Where is the entrance at?

It's so weird. I basically copy-pasted the attachment example from the Python doc.
@TheX Well, there's the one at my house, but the other one is at the end of the castle closest to my place.

okay...

It's nothing fancy yet. I had to do other stuff, but I got it finished.

9:21 PM
@RPiAwesomeness So I compared your email source to one that did show an attachment.

Haven't tested it yet. Though.
@NathanOsman And?
Does it have to do with the encoding?

The one that worked used a Content-Type of multipart/mixed and yours uses multipart/alternative.

its dark out :-(

@TheX :(

I'm not sure if that's the cause though.
Just one of the differences I noticed.

9:22 PM
I'm off. Good night!

Let me try one more thing...
So If I send a text+html email with an attachment, it uses multipart/mixed and then uses multipart/alternative inside that for the text+html versions.

Hmm...

But I see why yours isn't working. Instead of having text+html with an attachment, it thinks your email contains three different formats text+html+attachment and just shows the HTML one.

I lost the link to your code.
Can you please give me the URL again?

subway looks awesome

@RPiAwesomeness: can you use a MIMEMultipart inside another MIMEMultipart?

Gonna spruce it up some eventually, but I'm busy coding now ;)

If so, that might work.

9:28 PM
Perhaps.
I'll try.

Like this:
MIMEMultipart
    - attachment
    - MIMEMultipart
        - text/plain
        - text/html

Ah.
Yeah, trying that now.

"Windows 10 to run iOS and Android apps". Can't tell if brilliant, or utterly stupid >.> http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology-science/technology/windows-10-run-iphone-android-5605031

Erm...
@NathanOsman I can't figure out how to do that... :P

Okay, one sec.

9:36 PM
@Seth that title isn't really what was said... five lines in the article later "All designers will need to do is 'port over'..." so it is a automated porting tool...

hm, having a tough time getting a hand on this twitter hashtag thing.

Something like this:
mixed = MIMEMultipart('mixed')
# TODO: add the attachment to mixed
alternative = MIMEMultipart('alternative')
# TODO: add text message to alternative
# TODO: add HTML message to alternative
mixed.attach(alternative)
Then use mixed when you send the message.

@Mateo There are two ways to run other platform's apps on your platform: Auto port them or write your own support layers for the other platforms. Most people choose the former.

so they will get buggy ports from ios games ;P

9:39 PM
yup ;)

\o/
Sorta...

@RPiAwesomeness It worked?

It came in as an attachment...but it also displayed the attachment text in the email as plaintext.
So we're making progress! But not totally fixed :P

what happens if the attachment is a image?

mixed = MIMEMultipart('mixed')	# Initialize the message as outer_msg
	msg = MIMEMultipart('alternative')

	attachment = MIMEBase('application', 'octet-stream')
	attachment.set_payload( open(path,'rb').read() )
	encoders.encode_base64(attachment)
	attachment.add_header('Content-Disposition', 'attachment; filename="{0}"'.format(os.path.basename(path)))

	mixed.attach(attachment) # Attach the attachment to the message

	text, html = get_message_data() # Get the user's input for the content of the message
Is basically the code that's doing this.
get_message_data() is just getting the user's input for the body of the message.
Again, shows up inline and as an attachment.

9:46 PM
oh, but as an actual picture - that is good

Try doing it in the other order. Attach msg before the attachment.
(No idea if it makes any difference, just an idea.)

at least it didn't print out the picture as text...

@NathanOsman Just reversed the order :P
@Mateo Oh, definitely!

it's a feature!

... right

9:48 PM
automatic preview of attachments inline!

@NathanOsman It's definitely the use of mixed that's enabled this.

It's still not working right?

No, not working :(

@Fabby OK, finally got myself logged in ; only took half an hour for that =)

:)
Concerning your edit of the linux mint guy (closed off question)
This one...
Just to let you know that I agree with you that Mint doesn't matter in this case...
BUT, he also cross-posted to Linux&Unix...
