Why are factory cables any different than regular USB cables? All the ones on Ebay look pretty darn exactly the same to all of the regular ones I've got laying around...

sometimes they have DRM on them (cough apple cough).

@jrg That's what I thought. Why do you need a specific "factory" cable to boot the kindle fire over USB?

@Toroidal Can't seem to get it to work. But, read the README.1ST.txt file:

I am running Ubuntu 14.10 and I have downloaded BootChess, and I have extracted the contents of the ZIP file into a folder called "BootChess" in my home directory. But I have been having some trouble getting it to run, I tried at first using the cd command to get into the BootChess folder and ex...

I am declaring the Kindle Fire project a flop. I've tried several times over the last few months and it just isn't going anywhere.

It doesn't help that the USB port is pretty much useless, but I just can't get it to work :(

You'll need one other machine to install it on to test (either the host OS or another VM).

It is a network transfer app after all :P

I have a PPA with a build for Ubuntu just FYI.

It'll run on Windows 7.

The installer will run on XP but the application won't. The final version will, though.

(I have to set some extra compiler flags to generate an executable that runs on XP.)

The Ubuntu build has a quirk though... due to a bug in an separate package, the tray icon appears in the upper-left corner of the screen.

It works, but it's a bit of a pain. And you have to right-click it.

Meh, no worries!

I have plans to work around the issue for the final release.
