@NathanOsman: it works now! Thanks, mate!

The path to a kindle fire with Android or Ubuntu mobile is now underway!
adb & fastboot are installed and I'm downloading GAPPS & Android 4.3 (latest ported version of Android for the Kindle Fire 1st gen) now
What're we on, 4.5 now?

@NathanOsman and do keep me posted about the raspberry pi black magic w-o-l ;-)

Why are factory cables any different than regular USB cables? All the ones on Ebay look pretty darn exactly the same to all of the regular ones I've got laying around...

@Toroidal You have to make it executable

jrg
8:10 PM
@RPiAwesomeness there isn't really a big diff in cables, most of the time
sometimes they have DRM on them (cough apple cough).
that's about it.

@jrg That's what I thought. Why do you need a specific "factory" cable to boot the kindle fire over USB?

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness oh, well that i don't know.
probably a DRM issue

@jrg :P

user136984
@blade19899 I have now done that, but when trying to run it, I still get an error:

user136984
8:11 PM
bash: ./BootChess.bin: cannot execute binary file: Exec format error

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness looks like the big diff is how the pins are wired.

user136984
BootChess.bin now has these permissions: -rwxrwxr-x

user136984
@blade19899: But still that error message.

@Toroidal I just downloaded the BootChess, lets me whats up with it!

user136984
@blade19899 Ok! :)

8:20 PM
@Toroidal Can't seem to get it to work. But, read the README.1ST.txt file:
> >For PC Windows/Linux/OSX/DOS/BSD :
BootChess_500b_noQueening.bin
BootChess_512b_Queening.bin
*BootChess.bin is default BootChess_512b_Queening.bin
->associated BootChess.bat
Final week of my study, right now don't have time for tweaking...
SO HAPPY I'M GONNA LEAVE THAT 8RATE SCHOOL :D

user136984
Well, if anyone else can get this Chess game working, then please let me know! :D

user136984
Maybe @Fabby or someone. ;)

@Toroidal: only Battle Chess! :P ;-)
@Toroidal: he's using DataWarehouse software and is seems to have some problem...

user136984
8:38 PM

user136984
Well, I think that I will post a question about it anyway just in case I can somehow get it working... :)

Q: How to run BootChess on Ubuntu 14.10

ToroidalI am running Ubuntu 14.10 and I have downloaded BootChess, and I have extracted the contents of the ZIP file into a folder called "BootChess" in my home directory. But I have been having some trouble getting it to run, I tried at first using the cd command to get into the BootChess folder and ex...

user136984
But I have a bad feeling that I am going to have to find a different multiplayer Chess application for my CLI... :(

8:59 PM
I am declaring the Kindle Fire project a flop. I've tried several times over the last few months and it just isn't going anywhere.
It doesn't help that the USB port is pretty much useless, but I just can't get it to work :(

@Fabby Take another look at this question: askubuntu.com/questions/580075/… which has been answered by the OP.

@Karel: Done and voted to reopen...

Can I assign certain commands to certain keyboard shortcuts in Terminal?

user136984
So that I just press a combination of keys and the command is printed so that I don't have to write a really long command that I have done before.

user136984
9:12 PM
:)

@NathanOsman: Do you need a Win10 beta tester? (i deleted it a while ago, but wouldn't mind to re-install if you need one)

I do have a Windows 10 VM, but you're welcome to try it if you want.

@Toroidal: yes and it's called an alias...

I don't have the latest Windows 10 release installed.
It's just too big to justify over a connection this slow.

I'll re-install tomorrow and update...
I've got 50Mbps... no worries there!

9:19 PM
You'll need one other machine to install it on to test (either the host OS or another VM).
It is a network transfer app after all :P
I have a PPA with a build for Ubuntu just FYI.

My GF is going to be SoL! >:)
Ah...
She has Win7...

It'll run on Windows 7.
The installer will run on XP but the application won't. The final version will, though.
(I have to set some extra compiler flags to generate an executable that runs on XP.)

Gimme the PPA too!

ppa:george-edison55/nitroshare-dev

then I'll test from Ubuntu Wireless to her Win7 wired and wireless...

9:22 PM
It has builds for 14.04, 14.10, and 15.04.

No unicorns here!
(Let alone vervets!)

The Ubuntu build has a quirk though... due to a bug in an separate package, the tray icon appears in the upper-left corner of the screen.
It works, but it's a bit of a pain. And you have to right-click it.

Meh, no worries!

I have plans to work around the issue for the final release.

(The upper left corner is free!) :D

9:24 PM
:)

Does anyone know what the correct method would be to allow all users access to the data on a partition is?

Logging off...

jrg
add everyone to the group

I've got an SSD partition for VMs and I want to make that accessible

jrg
9:29 PM
or giving world read/write

Format it under FAT... :D
(that was a joke!)
FAT has no permissions...
Sorry..
anyway: problems on my side: logging off!

Does anyone see anything wrong with this fstab line?
UUID=05b2dfb9-a2ad-4c21-98d3-9c8467a7f4c0 /media/SSD ext4 auto rw,user,auto 0 0

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness nothing yet.
yeah, looks fine.

Then why am I getting this?
$ mount /media/SSD/
[mntent]: line 17 in /etc/fstab is bad
mount: can't find /media/SSD/ in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

jrg
did you mkdir /media/SSD ?

9:35 PM
Yeah

user136984
Do you guys agree? ;D

Aha!
facepalm
I was specifying ext4 & auto for the FS type
Dangit.
Stupid file-sharing between users. Y U NO WORK?

9:51 PM
pebkac error detected

@hbdgaf shutting down due to user input failure
@NathanOsman I commented on your question about magicpackets. did it help any?

@RPiAwesomeness you may want to define an ACL: askubuntu.com/questions/52584/shared-folders-for-all-users

omg its a Takkat.

sssshhh is shy that ;)

lol

10:03 PM
And heeeya blokes we have a Takkat, rarely seen in the wild. Tread softly so as not to spook it in my best Steve Irwin voice.

rofl
<-- is always happy to spend some spare seconds of its busy life here
AU chat is like a quick relaxing shower before we go out in the wild again.

I dont spend enough time here. /sarcasm

It's just a quarter of a quarter of my screen when I'm on.

press F11 for the rescue.
no more distractions == peace.

I know it's weird, but I need noise to focus.

10:09 PM
I dropped 10

10 what?

windows

OMG did it break to pieces?

no Microsoft already did that

@Virusboy Did you just clean up a tmux instance or something?

10:11 PM
no why

reduction in number of windows by 10.

tmux is what again?

terminal multiplexer. you can split a terminal in many terminals... so like i3wm as an app.

ah, you did not talk about your windows. Phew. I just imagined the freezing cold wind blowing into your room.

no but it does sound fun
i just ctrl + alt + T multiple times
@Takkat its friggin 20 here nope

10:14 PM
@Virusboy then you can't have an awesome terminal setup like this pissedoffadmins.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/…

umm youve convinced me
I also have scared my wife off into having multiple hard drves
where the setup is ssd for boot hdd for data

10:26 PM
@hbdgaf I like that wm, but it mostly uses the meta key to get things done

I only played with it a little. All the hotkeys are configurable though.

I like the idea of the minimally decorated windows - resize and move with modifier key

Is it just me, or is Element 14's site quite slow?

@RPiAwesomeness well, they did just more than quadruple the power of the raspi and they are the same price. +ubuntu +win10 in the future. I'm sure they are getting a lot of traffic.

@Mateo I guessed as much :)
Now...to write a good Road Tester application...

10:38 PM
maybe link your video skills :)

@Mateo Oh gosh. Not that first one :P
However, I am planning on doing a video explaining what the Raspberry Pi is - hopefully that'll be better quality and worth linking.

hey, it wasn't that bad :P, and your screen name is "@RPiAwesomeness" so

@Mateo It is indeed :) The audio needed work IMO

@RPiAwesomeness ah, that would be a good idea

Oooo. I like teh fancy boxes they come in.
Oh dang. It's a quad core? Wowzerz

10:42 PM
@RPiAwesomeness: I was pondering getting an odroid c1. ;p
slightly faster, does gig-e

I may have fixed the WOL issue but I can't test it... my cellular service provider is having some technical issues.

Yeah, I think the raspi team realized they were losing ground on the cubieboard, banannapi, etc and upped their game.

@NathanOsman so I think the mac of nitroshare build is waiting on the cmake release

at least they listen @hbdgaf

@Mateo CMake 3.2?

10:44 PM
yeah

You can actually temporarily work around it by removing the target_compile_features(...) lines.
It's in src/CMakeLists.txt.

cell tower Internet is never stable, no matter how good your network is.

@Virusboy No, the whole network is down it seems.

@Virusboy I think that's the beauty of startups and small/micro businesses. They HAVE to listen or die. I'll buy from a small or local business at a 10% price increase just because they tend to listen.

Certain areas within our Home network are currently experiencing intermittent service disruptions. We apologize for any inconvenience.
They've at least acknowledged it.

10:45 PM
@NathanOsman its still stands
@hbdgaf yea, I told my wife the same thing when it came to buying locally

@NathanOsman something about apple clang not doing stuff, I can get you more details later

@Mateo Yeah, I think the error is because CMake doesn't know what C++11 features Clang supports. They added the list to CMake in 3.2 but it isn't out yet.

@Virusboy The other argument for buying small and local is it keeps money in the local ecosystem... You don't have to pay ten tiers of management etc that have never seen your personal location. So, all those salaries turn in to local economy boosts and wages/spending.

Oh... I bet I know what's happening.
When you comment out that line, it doesn't use the C++11 flags anymore.
Yeah, it might be easier to just wait for the new release.
The Windows build is stuck waiting for it as well.
(Though I can manually work around it.)

i droppped 10 @NathanOsman

10:48 PM
Hmm...what would make me stand out from the rest of the reviewers...

and homebrew doesn't want to mess with switching out clang, yelling at my computer "Just do it!" since i have a separate install on a removable hd

I've coded since age 8...I've written a (very) simple ASM OS for the Raspberry Pi (it blinks lights - yay)...I've got a blog and a Youtube channel...I'm active on the Raspberry Pi Stack Exchange...
Do any of those really set me apart enough?

@hbdgaf cubieboard didn't keep up on supporting images so that was sad

^^ true
@RPiAwesomeness A "can it run" segment where you spin up a bunch of different images and see which ones are usable for simple tasks. "Can it run android? Okay. How about a lightweight debian? What about ubuntu-touch? We all know it can run angrstrom, but it's here for a speed comparison." etc etc

@hbdgaf Dude. AWESOME idea :D

10:50 PM
so putting the people behind raspi with a more powerful board is going to be nice

@Virusboy Dropped?

Kersmash

@NathanOsman no longer using

@RPiAwesomeness I generally don't have bad ideas. I just lack resources and follow-through for the most part.

@Mateo That's fine. I'll keep an eye out for the final 3.2 release. It's already a day late (according to their issue tracker).

10:51 PM
@hbdgaf :)

I'll need to update my CMake PPA anyway.
@Virusboy Ah, okay.

And I've got ideas...I just gotta get them out of my head and in action - similar to you :)

@RPiAwesomeness I'ld also be interested to know how it works as a NAT/router box now with the increased horsepower. It used to be a choke-point if you threw it in the network as an inline device. That could be an interesting article.

@hbdgaf Yeah! I wanted to make my old Pi into a router 'cause ours was having issues, but I never got around to it. That definitely would be something I would do!
Plus, I've got 26 days to apply (I think)
So, that'll give me a little bit of time to refine my application and make the videos I think I need.

10:57 PM
See, this is where we're different. I don't want to TRY to buy a thing. If I can't buy ten, I'm talking to an invisible audience.

11:10 PM
hopefully canonical does it as a flagship device for snappy/core, their idea of having separate stores(in addition to the regular app store) that a manufacture can set up could really be something awesome

11:25 PM
...something's not right here:
Methinks all the fans from the other youtubers on Mianite all came and liked CaptainSparklez' videos, but didn't actually watch it.
That, or Youtube is broken.
Which it probably is.

or does it count complete views?

@Mateo Dunno

Youtube counter is broken
but if your a content subber, it works

11:43 PM
im looking for a lightweight desktop
core two duo 2gigs ram
been runing xubuntu flawlessly
but they no longer support oss sound? long story short , after an update my sound went kaplooee
so i give up

why not try gnome?
or GDK

i rememeber e17 was super snappy but just installed bodhi last night and it was disgustingly laggy
@Virusboy, has gnome gotten lighter at all?

IDK i havent used it since Jacky

i left gnome when 12.04 came out

@JoshuaRobison: I tend to go with lxde. I think @hbdgaf has tried lxqt as well

11:46 PM
because it was laggy

Not a very pretty de, but VERY light

i tried mate but the development is ....non existant
no applets
looks like butt
tweaked the mate menu to get it a bit up to speed to be like the whisker menu but
the window list applet doesnt allow for icons only

what about cinnamon

seems like.... something that would exist if there were heavy dev going on
yeah, maybe il check out cinnamon
good call
i havent tried it in years

i have some issues with it, but as far as rescourse use, it seems lighter than Unity

11:50 PM
im disappointed with bodhi T_T been taking tons of wrong turns
thanks @Virusboy
