@Mateo :D Looks like a Yeti went shopping before disappearing down his ice-cave!
@Toroidal: Now I'm sure you're a girl: askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/372819 You forgot to change massage into message... ;-)

user136984
@Fabby :D Come on!

user136984
@Fabby I was eating biscuits at the time when I was editing that one so got a bit distracted... But definitly not a girl! :D

Hello people!
@hbdgaf sorry, a month later I've lost any understanding on that message

@Toroidal: >:)

So stackoverflow design has been changed. cool

1:09 PM
Just a quick recap for those who managed to miss it: The New England Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX on the strangest play call of a Super Bowl ever.
:)

@Toroidal Don't worry, seems like Fabby accuses almost everybody of being a girl... ;D

And I don't want to know how YOUR keyboard looks like either ;D

@RPiAwesomeness So this is the reason why you changed your icon? I preferred the goat!

1:13 PM
@ByteCommander ;)
@Seth Changes his, so I figured I'd change mine!
I'll change back sometime.

Okay :)

1:15 PM
The formatting is so bad that I just find it really unreadable.

user136984
And he keeps on saying things like "bla bla bla", which is really not helping the readability of that question! :D

user136984
Maybe you could you have a look @Fabby? :)

Forget it...
This is about rooting an Android. Nothing to do with Ubuntu...

Well, that didn't help to not confuse me then (the fact that it didn't have anything to do with Ubuntu)...

Hey, just reached 800 reps! YAYYYY ;D

Congrats!
@Rinzwind: I've closed the second as a duplicate of the first! >:)

I did not; flagged them both as OT and the answer as NAO

What do you get from this comment?

@KasiyA: Don't bother... Broadcom... Let chili555 handle it tonight. He's a Level 100000 wizard when it gets to that stuff...

look at closely!

What do you mean??? Did I miss something?
AP-HotSpot?

1:43 PM

Even if it's an AP HotSpot it's still one for @chili555: He's a wizard with a bag full of tricks when it comes to this stuff
@KasiyA: I always do both so he knows he's in the right spot!

Q: "Intel(R) Graphics Installer for Linux" for Ubuntu 14.10

ToroidalI know that my Intel drivers are out of date, but I am unsure of exactly how to get them up-to-date, because when I was running Windows 7 I was able to run Intel's "Intel® Driver Update Utility" which would automatically find the right Intel drivers for my system and then install them. But this ...

Looks perfectly clear to me!

user136984
Good! :)

I might even try it! (I'm on 14.04.1)

user136984
Ok! :)

user136984
I thought that I had fixed the bit which seemed a bit unclear, but just wanted to check, it was the part when I kept on referring to links "mentioned above".

1:49 PM
a bit confusing, but the link made up for it...
OTOH: there is a source package available: why don't you make a system backup, download that and compile it yourself???

Eisbrecher - EISZEIT youtube.com/watch?v=PjXAGORF9JI
Only listen to it if you have good bass speakers!

@Toroidal the drivers should be in the repos.

intel-gpu-tools
Was just looking at that...
Will report back
intel-gpu-tools is already the newest version.
@Toroidal: you shouldn't do anything....
(at least on 14.04.1)

user136984
Well, my graphics drivers are rather buggy, and some of the bugs which are in them which I have noticed have been fixed in later releases from Intel, but I have not received them.

@Toroidal Download them from intel directly then.

user136984
1:58 PM
@terdon: That is part of the problem... It asks for specifications about my computer which I don't know... :( It says to refer to the label on the bottom of my computer for a certain number, but I cannot find that number! :(

@Toroidal What don't you know? All it needs is the graphics card model
You can see that with lspci | grep VGA

user136984
Oh, maybe they changed the process then...

@Seth We need to find out who's abusing the starring system.
2

@Virusboy: No starring pictures?

user136984
@terdon: The result of that command was:

user136984
2:03 PM
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)

@Toroidal Old system?

user136984
@terdon: So does that mean that for the product line I choose "2nd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) Proccessor with Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000/2000"?

user136984
I only got the system about 3 years ago.

user136984
This question even though mostly in another language has the characteristics at the end of spam:

user136984
But I am not too sure.

user136984
2:13 PM
What do you guys think?

user136984
Oh wait... It is gone! :D

user136984
Looks like it was spam then!

@Toroidal if his washing machine is broken, then maybe it needs an upgraded Linux Kernel. (Just saying.)

user136984
Why do people come and post spam anyway? I mean what really is the point of coming and doing that, it doesn't help anyone and will end up just being removed?

@Toroidal They're trolls and they somehow get enjoyment out of wasting other people's time
Dang enter key

user136984
2:21 PM
:D

@RPiAwesomeness: The goat is gone!
@chili555: Good morning!

@Fabby And the Patriot is in!
@Fabby You must have missed the news. The Patriots beat the Seahawks in the Super Bowl 28-24!

What's a super bowl?
:P

@Toroidal I don't believe that was the work of a human. The point is if their software spams 10 billion websites, maybe one of the websites users will remember the name whitewestinghouse when their next Egyption washing machine breaks down.

@Fabby O.o

2:24 PM
Hmmmrrff.. I was sleeping soundly until you guys interrupted my little doze...@Fabby

@Fabby Can't figure out if you're trolling or not...
OH MY GOSH!
NEW RASPBERRY PI!

@chili555: So I shouldn't do that any more so early???
:(

OMG!
IT CAN RUN UBUNTU SNAPPY CORE!
IT HAS A 900 MHz CPU + 1GB RAM!

JK @Fabby

user136984
@Greg :D But if I had an Egyption washing machine and it broke down, I wouldn't trust the guy who spammed a good forum with the name of their washing machine repair company or whatever it was...

user136984
2:25 PM
:D

@RPiAwesomeness: I just can't get worked up about sports...

"The Raspberry Pi 2-compatible version of Windows 10 will be available free of charge to makers."
@Fabby ;)

I am looking at the Broadcom (yuck!) access point question now.

@Toroidal yeah, but you're a technically competent internet user. If one of the other billion people who saw it weren't as technically literate as you are, maybe they'd think about giving them a call.

@chili555: Sorry again...

2:26 PM
ERMEGOSH!
I'm so excited! They said they weren't going to release a new Pi for like 2 years - let alone a totally new & more powerful design!

user136984
@Greg Well... If they would spam my forum that I got to... I wonder what they would do to my washing machine... :D

And it's still only $35.

@Toroidal probably replace it with a camel powered one.

user136984

2:28 PM
@Toroidal ...are you the one spamming stars? Hmmm?
;)
Hey guys. Does anyone know what version of ARM Ubuntu runs on?

7

No prob, @Fabby. I'm hungry for points this morning; this on has a nice juicy 50!

@Rinzwind Dude. The new Pi can run Ubuntu!
Finally!

@RPiAwesomeness: V7

@Fabby too late!

2:30 PM
#RPiIsExcited

(And I only know that because V6 support was dropped recently)

DANGIT! Now I have to decide between New England Patriots Super Bowl t-shirt and a new Pi...

@Rinzwind: Huh?

@Toroidal Probably, yes. You should also check lshw-gtk (sudo apt-get install lshw-gtk and then sudo lshw-gtk) and see what it says about your graphics card there.

Hi guys

2:32 PM
@Fabby I said 7 first

Oh yes!
:)

I'm having a hard time trying to change Ubuntu VM screen resolution

@Lucio why? >:-D

user136984
@terdon Ok, thanks! :)

@RPiAwesomeness: a T-shirt will only be good for a year... The Pi for a few years!

2:33 PM
this doesn't help

@Fabby True
" Now that we're using an ARMv7 core, we can also run Ubuntu: a Snappy Ubuntu Core package for NOOBS will be available in the next couple of weeks."
Ooooo

@Rinzwind ubuntu desktop is currently using 640x480

Hehe...I think Element14's website is having issues ... :)

that is way tiny

Same thing for Farnell/RS Components

2:34 PM
@Lucio Have you installed the drivers? How much video memory have you allocated?

It's the original Pi launch all over again!

@terdon 64mb, fresh installation
I'm using VirtualBox

@Fabby answered

@Lucio You probably need the guest additions. Have you installed that?
I've always had a tiny resolution until I installed those...

@RPiAwesomeness nop?
what is that

2:36 PM
@Lucio you need it :-)

@Lucio Try that, then reboot
Just a sec

okay

@RPiAwesomeness 1

@chili555: I knew it! 5 minutes flat!

LOL

2:37 PM
When I saw the question, i thought of you! >:)
looking now...

@RPiAwesomeness still waiting :)

Damn he is doing it with images :D

yep

user136984
@terdon: I have installed that, but when running the command "sudo lshw-gtk" in Terminal I get this ouput although other than that it seems to work fine:

2:39 PM
It'll download a file.

user136984
Why do I get an error like that?

Once it's downloaded, you'll need to "Insert the CD" (same button again) and then mount it within Ubuntu.
@Lucio Actually...

@RPiAwesomeness its say "Do you want to run it?"

I show it in that tutorial
@Lucio Screenie?

2:41 PM
nooooooo. It's sold out :(
@Lucio No
Is the CD mounted?

@chili555: 10 points already in! 50 depends on s.o. else!!! ;-)

what CD?

@Lucio CD image

no idea
the OS is already installed

Click on the CD icon on the bar

2:42 PM
checked. The liveCD is mounted
is that okay?

Umm..
hrm

C'mon, bounty!!

@RPiAwesomeness O.O

You should see files like these if it's truly mounted (sry, the only Linux VBox I have is eOS)

sorry, my fault
it is not mounted
but available in the CD menu

2:44 PM
Okay. Click that
See if the files match mine
icons aside

that's what happens after click on the iso from menu

Nonono. You don't want to mount the ISO.

so what should I click?

You want to "Insert Guest Additions CD image..."
Sorry if my screenie didn't make that clearer :(

that mounted a CD

2:46 PM
@Lucio What's in the CD?

@RPiAwesomeness @Lucio: Can you guys get a room???
:p

@Fabby Good point

@RPiAwesomeness my internet connection is not good enough to open a new room
sorry but no

Except...my internet just went kaput
@Lucio Good! That's what we want!

I have a question about VMs
When I download a live cd, e.g. ubunutu serve or centos. Do I install them since the VMs
or just always run the livecd?

2:49 PM
@Lucio Open a terminal

done

Just a sec...
Have to take care of something .
All righty

yey :D

@Lucio cd to the VBOXADDITIONS

done

2:51 PM
Okay, now sudo chmod +x VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
and then sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

@Vader You can either install or run live, just as you want, but I don't see any reason for running a live iso in a VM because of the lack of persistence...

@RPiAwesomeness wait a second, it is a CD!
how would I change the file?

@Lucio It's fine ;)
It's a CD image
Plus, VBox

it is already runnable anyway :)

2:52 PM
So I should install it? Will that mean I can actually restart and poweroff?

Then do the second step and you'll be good!

running the file..

It'll compile/install some kernel modules and you should then be able to reboot the VM & have higher resolutions.
Might take a few reboots & some finagling with your display settings too

sudo ./VBoxfile
@RPiAwesomeness hah, cool!

@Lucio np

2:54 PM
@Vader Yea, just like a real machine, except that it is virtual. Therefore VirtualMachine ;D

@RPiAwesomeness haha, thank you

@Lucio So, it's working?

hope this works

user136984
Wow! It is getting busy here now! :D

I only have a pretty bad laptop with 4gb ram and only 2 cores. Will it be able to run unity?

2:54 PM
@RPiAwesomeness it has finished

@Lucio Okay. Reboot

@Vader Don't think so. Should be fine as real installation, but I think it's too much for a VM. Get LUbuntu or XUbuntu instead.

But I would like a server distro

@ByteCommander Or Ubuntu MATE

But servers come without any DE, don't they? So you wouldn't have Unity anyway

2:57 PM
@RPiAwesomeness done

Any improvement?

can I use xubuntu as a server?

I have a new resolution now, bigger one. From 640 to 800. that's good

For whatever reason, the login screen rarely seems to be affected by it.

@Lucio Install the graphics drivers on the guest. Also install guest-additions.

2:58 PM
but only that resolution

@Lucio Try increasing the video memory

@Toroidal That's fine, ignore it.

user136984
Ok

user136984
What is this person trying to say?

@Vader Don't know. What's the difference between server and desktop distro anyway?

3:01 PM
@Lucio Try shutting down the VM, then increasing video memory/enabling 3D in the VM's settings

@Toroidal Maybe he has an encrypted partition?

@RPiAwesomeness yep, that's ok

@Lucio Is it all the way up?
The video memory slider

yep

@ByteCommander I was hoping you would know, :D

3:02 PM
@Lucio Okay.

user136984
@ByteCommander Maybe... But he really doesn't provide enough information to be sure of exactly what his problem is.

@Lucio That's strange. I mean, I've got the Guest additions CD installed in elementary OS Freya and it's got full resolution (I can go full screen no problem)
@Lucio No, I meant the VM's video memory slider

wops
good news

@Lucio Yay!

3:04 PM
maximizing the window have enabled a new resolution!
\o/

@Lucio \o/
Try pressing right Ctrl + F

@RPiAwesomeness you are the best :)

@Lucio ;)
I'm gonna be posting a tutorial on my Youtube channel about this exactly - you can repay me with a watch/like/constructive criticism ;)

don't forget the maximize window thing! :D

@Lucio Yup :)
Boo

guess i m better of with a gui

@RPiAwesomeness: next time, click on the user's icon and get a private room! :P

3:12 PM
@Fabby @Lucio said he couldn't

He's a 5K rep user!

@Fabby I know that :P
He said his internet couldn't
So I was like, meh.

@Vader Then I would get XUbuntu (for example) and install the required server-related packages (such as apache2 and stuff like this) manually.
Or get an Ubuntu server and manually install Xorg and xfce (or any other DE)

dem interwebitubes di'nt wo'k fo' him?

@Fabby ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

3:16 PM
@Vader yes, of course you can . You can use any Linux whatsoever as a server.
The "server" edition of distros like Ubuntu simply comes with certain tools (apache, mysql etc) pre-installed and no GUI.

Cool, why is this point not better adevertised?

All the tools can also be installed on the other editions.
@Vader Umm. It is? You just need to read the documentation.

I always though I needed to download the server edition to use the server stuff

Also, it is assumed that people using the server version know what they're doing :)

@terdon I meant on the hompages of linux sites

3:17 PM
@Vader It is. You just need to read the details.

I want to get into the server side stuff

Go for it.

@terdon have you ever used ubuntu as a server?

Oli
@terdon (Mild correction: none of that is preinstalled, but they are on the installation media and a tasksel option at the end of the installer makes it easy to install them when you're done with the main installation)

Q: Number of installed keyboard layouts in Linux Mint Qiana

SuncatcherI cannot add more than 4 keyboard layouts in Qiana. Is that normal? Is there such limitation or I am doing something wrong?

3:24 PM
@Oli Really? Thanks. I've never actually installed the server.
@Vader Yes. But I didn't install it myself.

Oli
@Vader The general ethos with servers is to keep it simple. The less nonsense on them, the less can {break,get hacked,hold back packages,need testing}. By extension because you don't need a GUI to host or administer a website server, you don't want a GUI running on the server. Ubuntu Server just reflects that way of thinking.
Bit of a shock to Windows Server users (which still has a GUI, because... Windows) but it's better in the long run if you can treat your servers like appliances and not Desktops that also happen to host things.

jrg
Servers as appliances is definitely a better way.
Means that you can replace them if you want.

Oli
(Although, as has been said a few times now, you can host things from an Ubuntu Desktop install —it's all the same stuff with a GUI installed— I just wouldn't recommend deploying a Desktop install on the internet)

@ByteCommander: Meeeh... (sorry)

3:30 PM
Oooo...you didn't just say that about Unity :P
He said it's crap & has tons of Spyware. Spyware no. Amazon/ads maybe.

user136984
I am a bit confused about what this person is trying to say. So he is getting eye strain because of Ubuntu or something...?

user136984
Oh dear... Another critical vulnerability has been found in Adobe Flash Player which affects all platforms... :(

#FlashFail

@Toroidal ... Who saw that coming one coming? :)
