@Fabby @Fabby XD
Also onion and garlic for get rid of mucus

Edward Snowden explains how U.K. spies can secretly hijack your phone
@Fabby This, still infuriates me ^

@blade19899 read this already... Interesting

@blade19899: Seriously?

@Helio Yes, I'll get you the link...

@blade19899 Add the link and I'll star!

11:03 AM
@blade19899 even I could probabily do that using any NSA backdoor

> "U.K. spy agency GCHQ can covertly access British citizens' smartphones, surreptitiously listening through their microphones and snapping pictures with their cameras, according to former NSA contractor Edward Snowden." - Edward Snowden describes GCHQ's 'Smurf Suite' of phone surveillance tools

Link, with a quote from it ^

@blade19899 Thanks for the info! +star

@Helio It's sad, that people don't fix bugs. It just ruins it for everyone.

However... What about using Ubuntu touch?

11:04 AM
@Fabby @Helio Thanks, spread the word.
@Helio Not possible

Why?

@Helio Yup! Good spanish product!
BQ!
>:-)

@Helio Ubuntu Touch is open source. Everyone is monitoring the code.

@Fabby: Not for publicity, I'm not so national, I prefer Meizu by its power

If by some miracle a NSA backdoor has been built into an Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Ubuntu Touch, people, will RAGE.

11:06 AM
Let's see which brand makes one with more power and convergence

@Helio I've got a BQ and it's good enough for me!
:P

@blade19899: So much people reviewing code. Not posible (I think)
@Fabby: I'm a bit irked with BQ because I bought a few years ago a E-Ink reader with Linux firmware and they didn't gave me the firmware sources.

@Helio There was a rumor that the NSA asked Linus Torvalds(the creator of the Linux Kernel) to built a backdoor onto the kernel.

@blade19899 More then a rumour: a canary!

Torvalds father said that the NSA asked Linus to create a backdoor.

11:09 AM
@blade19899: I heard that the father of Linus said that in a European council.

He is in the european parlement.

@blade19899 indeed! As Linus himself cannot talk about it!

@Fabby Yes, he lives in America. if he talks, he could be arrested for treason.
Searching got the article though...

I think that the future of Linux is... more eyes reviewing, more hands typing and more users using... ;-)

> "The United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) are alleged to have asked the creator of Linux, Linus Torvalds, to create ‘backdoors’ into GNU/Linux through which they could access. " - OMG! Ubuntu!, NSA Wanted Backdoor Access In Linux, Says Linus Torvalds's Father
5

11:14 AM
@blade19899 I read it again an thought that if the backdoor would be accepted by Linux... Would be a disaster.
However I think that Linux knows what is doing and never will allow something like.

@blade19899 I doubt this story. The NSA would know for sure upfront they would be turned down -publicly- by Torvalds (and also by any of the Linux maintainers close by him).

@Helio Even if he accepted there offer, to many smart eyes are on the kernel. They would figure it out pretty fast.

@Rinzwind: And both Torvalds would need to take a flight to Russia in 3 minutes.

Open Sourced backdoors would be very interesting to see ... ;)

@blade19899: I also think this.
@Takkat: Yes.

11:17 AM
@Rinzwind If they NSA are not aware of the grand mind of Linus/Linux, they might think like hey, lets just try it out. Maybe he'll do it.
@Takkat Redundant. No one would accept such a thing.

we could even send our own manipulated data through these doors to have some fun.

Why I've seen that the USA millitary forces made a contract with Microsoft to renew their XP licenses three years more?
@Takkat: The backdoored backdoorer?

@Rinzwind The first thing they do is make you sign an NDA... Then they start asking questions and giving orders...
@Takkat Yes! +1!!! :D
@Takkat :D :D :D

I just remembered I wrote an article about this:

@Fabby: And if you commit the NDA to the main kernel repo?

11:21 AM
@Helio Do you know what a canary-system is?
(canary in the coal mine?)

@Fabby: no.

@Helio OK, long ago when they still used gas lamps in coal mines,

> "Privacy and security, are one of the most talked about subjects lately. On its one, it asks a question: Are we, as a society, willing to give up a little liberty, for a bit of security? In this article, we will see if we can answer that question for ourselves." - EuroBytes, Privacy & Security

they used to also have canaries in little cages.
when the canary fainted, it meant there was gas.
so web sites are using the same system now...
(lemme look up one)

Little outdated because it is written in 2013, and:
> Due to excessive amount of new evidence, released by Edward Snowden, part 1 of this article is outdated, and not accurate. The security part of the "Privacy and Security" article, is still relevant, as the tools are still able to give you a reasonable amount of certainty that your privacy is maintained.

11:24 AM
@Fabby: I didn't knew this, the only I've heard is that they used a candle and if found gas the candle turned off.
However, if It's a flammable gas...

@Helio Hah! And you live on the canary islands!

@Fabby: Not now but I was born in Las Palmas
Never heard that system

A warrant canary is a method by which a communications service provider aims to inform its users that the provider has not been served with a secret government subpoena. Secret subpoenas, including those covered under 18 U.S.C. §2709(c) of the USA Patriot Act, provide criminal penalties for disclosing the existence of the warrant to any third party, including the service provider's users. A warrant canary may be posted by the provider to inform users of dates that they have not been served a secret subpoena. If the canary has not been updated in the time period specified by the host, users are...

@Fabby ;-)
Pretty law trick, you can't say that the FBI is here, but remove a announce that was not...

Yup!
Back to job hunting!
Only ping me when the chat room burns down!

11:32 AM
@Helio Nope. The outcry of the WHOLE world would make the NSA reconsider

@Rinzwind: The WHOLE world is happy with McDonalds, CocaCola, TV...

@blade19899 they know about him. He would have been on their list from the moment he made Linux public. As anyone making an OS will be.

@Rinzwind: only when the WHOLE world takes sense of itself...

@Helio he is not an American and he is not a US soldier like Snowden. No arresting him would not happen over something like that

@Rinzwind: Yes. He could return to Europe.

11:36 AM
and they would also have to get the Finnish government to agree. The whole reason for those FIFA folks to get arrested by the US =IS= because Switzerland signed a treaty for that to be legal (as the FIFA resides in Switzerland)

I'll go offline 1 hour approx. Ubuntu reinstall. I need to reinstall my Ubuntu as I broke mostly and need a clean experience.
Bye!

n00b! :D

@Rinzwind: To me?

yes very n00bish to break Ubuntu and then re-install >:-D
a true Linux user would fix it >:-DDDDD

@Rinzwind: When I installed it on a EFI laptop and then put the disk on a non-efi one. I need to boot with SuperGrub. It's badly irking. Also I could make a effort to reinstall GRUB, but I'm tired of 13.10.

Q: How to remove files, which contain special character and Latin-1 characters?

Jaymin DabhiI have 2 files in the directory name as 'App'. I want to remove those 2 files completely from that directory. But, when I try to remove it by command rm -rf it not delete. Even I can't see these 2 files in that 'App' folder in the UI. When I am doing ls -al into 'App' directory the result is as...

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L run fsck

@Rinzwind: Helio="N00B"; echo "Helio is ${Helio:0:2}T $Helio"
:-)
Bye!

Reading my old privacy and security article again:
> pssst, psst, did u know that NSA analysts 'willfully violated' surveillance systems, agency admits. They willfully violated surveillance to "spy on love interests.". Did u find that creepy to hear, me two.

@blade19899 the same applies for the British, French, Russian and Chinese versions of the NSA.

@Rinzwind The fact they are still getting away with this 'we-spy-on-you-to-protect-you`' bull crap, makes me feel like the majority of people on this planet, are just plain ignorant about all of this. Which is stupid as hell.

12:04 PM
@blade19899 that is cuz it currently does NOT affect the average person. If Linux's creator would get targeted over something as dumb as a refusal to incorporate a backdoor they'd get trashed hard.

@Rinzwind The average user, and all who uses technology, are targeted by the NSA.
That being said, gotta drive somewhere far away. Bye ya'all

hg8
@Fabby I am still a bit new to this. It's great to have someone to point out correct direction. Thanks very much!
@Fabby screenshot updated ;)

user136984
Which GNOME package do I report issues with these to?

user136984

user136984
@A.B.? :)

at a guess - that probably would be a mutter package
or a theme like adwaita if thats your issue

user136984
12:44 PM
The issue is that when hovered over they don't always change colour.

change theme - if the same happens then its a mutter issue

user136984
Ah which theme is that? GTK+ or window?

user136984
I guess GTK+...

hmm - I would have said window - as in window manager. Gtk I associate with the actual widgets within apps.
are you throwing this onto launchpad - or throwing upstream?

user136984
Well, I don't have another window theme to change to, plus there seems to be no need as changing the GTK+ theme from Numix to default fixed it.

user136984
12:50 PM
@fossfreedom: So is it a Numix issue then?

yep - sounds like a Numix issue. Think Numix is a github project ... may be wrong

user136984
Well, they definitely have an LP page so I think I'll report it there.

user136984
Yeah, actually I don't think I can report it on the LP page, so will have to go with GitHub.

user136984
@fossfreedom: There are a lot of repositories there, which is the right one do you think for this issue?

user136984
@fossfreedom: And what do you call the icons that I am referring to? Well, buttons...

I call them "window controls" - refer to them as minimum/maximum/close buttons as well if in doubt

1:20 PM

you've been reading what mat garratt has been saying havent you?!

Q: Enabling triple-head setup with two Nvidia GT730 in Ubuntu

MatanAfter installing a second Nvidia GeForce GT730 in the hope of overcoming a single card's limitation of only being able to support two monitors, I still cannot get a 3rd monitor working. Q: Why is it better to use "#!/usr/bin/env NAME" instead of "#!/path/to/NAME" as my shebang?

TheGeeko61I notice that some scripts which I have acquired from others have the shebang #!/path/to/NAME while others (using the same tool, NAME) have the shebang #!/usr/bin/env NAME. Both seem to work properly. In tutorials (on Python, for example), there seems to be a suggestion that the latter shebang ...

@ParanoidPanda OK, gnome-screenshot. Or your phone's camera.

hg8
oh thanks @terdon =)

You need to tell us what you need, not just "something better" but better how?

@hg8 it's possible, that bash isn't in /bin

@ParanoidPanda read this:

A: What is required for a question to contain "enough information"?

The goal establishes the setting and explains in broad terms what you want to do with that software. The requirements put specific constraints that the software must verify. Think of...

hg8
@A.B. I was not aware of that

2:26 PM
@terdon yes, your phone's camera is great.

user136984
@terdon: Well, I have edited my question to make it slightly less broad... And people seem to like it...

@ParanoidPanda It's even more broad if anything. What balance? Between what and what? What do you need that cheese doesn't offer? Do you want video at all? Only screenshots? Screencasts?
Also, list questions are specifically off topic network-wide. I don't know what makes you think AU is different. You need to make your question specific so we know if a tool fits your needs or not. As it stands, I don't even know what you want to be able to do.
Your question now is exactly what's listed as the first item in the "do not ask" page":
> every answer is equally valid: “What’s your favorite ______?”

user136984
@terdon: Ok, how about now?

@ParanoidPanda Much! +1 and closevote retracted.
I also added bullet points because, well, bullet points are cool!

Q: Unable to run chmod, chown, and even ls on a folder

iso_9001_I searched the net and tried to apply answers to similar problems but none worked so far. There is a folder named ocrpaylasim under /home/bnet path. This file belonged to bnet user before and was attached/mounted to a Windows shared folder through fstab. However, the permissions seem to be broken...

@Oli What is the output of apt-cache policy python3.4 on your machine?

@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L I'll try to solve.

GannetI'm Baffled. I had a problem with some hardware looked at the forum but didn't find the answer. After further research I cured the problem and posted a question and answer so others could benefit from my discovery. When I looked today, the question was there with some comments but no answer. ...

Oli
@A.B. Mine is from trusty-proposed. That's probably the reason there's a discrepancy.

@Rinzwind: Didn't mind to change theme. I fresh rebooted after install nvidia and the poiter does not flicker.

@Oli ok, let's wait for OPs reaction.

Q: locate xorg configuration

MatanI need to update my configuration through the nvidia tool, if I am to enable a triple headed desktop. is there a reason flags shouldn't be used to indicate a wrong answer?

wrong - don't use flag, just downvote. harmful - (ex rm -rf type of stuff) yes

user136984
@HeatherBrown: I personally don't think that that is the purpose of flags, I think it better just to downvote. Unless the answer is actually harmful.

user139252
Alright. I will put that into practice, then.

It does not actually answer the question, as the asker indicates that it is an issue with their Ubuntu clients, but not Windows, Android, or iOS clients.

Oli
@HeatherBrown It does it you know that Outlook doesn't use IMAP when it can avoid it. It uses its own proprietary protocol. It'll only talk IMAP when it has to (like when it's talking to a third party Linux client)... Which makes IMAP issues very relevant.

Would be LOL if MS decided to kill IMAP connections to their software :X

Downloading Marshmallow factory image...
I have heard lots of good things about the UI and battery life.
@Mateo After a few days, how are you finding Vivaldi?

@NathanOsman where did you find that image at? What does it support?

All of the factory images for Nexus devices are on that page.

@NathanOsman Thank you very kindly! =)

@NathanOsman not bad, really like that you can now do native decorations, still need to try and get plugins in, no ad block is painful

7:01 PM
Marshmallow runs on the Nexus 5, 6, 7 (2013), 9, and Player.
Though I'm sure the Cyanogen people will backport it to the Nexus 4.
@Mateo Is the UI pretty smooth?

although, I'm still defaulting back to firefox
@NathanOsman seems to be

I might give it a try.

erg, it has gotten way too complex to update a mac lately...

@Mateo What update are you trying to run?

el capitan

Ah

computer was on 10.5

Ah, that might make it more difficult then.
I was on 10.10

7:11 PM
so I got it to 10.6 with a retail disk, then 10.6.8 with a update bundle - then to mountaian lion with the update I downloaded form the store a while back where I had to extract it from the update before using it otherwise it would delete it's self - then get an apple id, and add a creditcard to download el capitan...
which is another self deleting install

:P
Dabg Aooke
Wow
What is that even
Apparently I can't type

It is. I know they have a utility that you can download to save the download and put it on a USB drive.

I'm going to do that, because I have another mac, that something is messed up where it dosn't want to log into the store...

Eventually I plan on hackintoshing my desktop
I know it's possible, I just need a drive formatted correctly to do it on
I had it boot up & install, just EUFI screwed with stuff

7:14 PM
and this first one, i'm upgrading for someone else... so having to use my info on it for the free download was silly

@RPiAwesomeness Make sure you're using an Intel processor. I could never get the Hackintosh to work on my AMD, even though they claimed it would.

@Mateo: The difference between El Capitán and Yosemite is that the dual-windowed mode of El Capitán fails some times with strange results.
P. D.: Is there somebody here with medium/advanced knowledges of LibreOffice Writter?

7:28 PM
ok, install started, installer has been saved from deletion:

@terdon: wow thanks! I was contemplating re-writing my NO.BAT file that I've been carrying around for 25 years and that allowed me to do a no *.jpg no *.png del *.* in bash, but I won't be needing that any more!

@Helio can't say I do - what was your question about it?

;-)

@Mateo: First a comment for El Capitán. I recommend you to install it with a USB. Running the .app shouldn't do a clean install an could be laggy.
About the LibreOffice question, is this:
I have a document (a long one) written by my mother.

thanks if it was mine i would do clean (but well, user has office... and still wants it on there)

7:32 PM
She haves no idea of computing (even basics)
She made all the chapters,subchapters as a numbered list

But she typed the numbers by hand
I want to convert them to a numbered list

interesting

@Mateo I followed the instructions from Yosemite to create a .dmg from the installer that I can use in VirtualBox.
So now I can run either Yosemite or El Capitan in a VM.

@Mateo: About office, I think you could backup the office apps to a external drive.

7:44 PM
@NathanOsman Oh? Can I have a link to those instructions? I'd like to give that a go

Sure, one sec.
Just replace "Yosemite" with "El Capitan" in each of the steps as necessary.

@Helio I suppose that "Damn it Mom, just use LaTeX already!" is not a valid answer, right?

@terdon: Right answer, but is the end of master work (I don't know how to say in English) and she needs to send it tonight for review. ;-)
And my father and I... simply we are the only technological humans from home
Now we are making list by hand :-/
Damn!
However isn't much (about 100 A4 pages)

might be the only answer given the time
and since it is made already, you might be able to think of something to set up for next time though

She plans to do Ph. D. the next year. I can ensure you that she will use LaTex. Even typing in braille, with a joystick, telepatic sensor or typing with feet.
;-)
