@Serg Too bad I can't upvote that anymore. It looks good and runs good. =)

Thanks :D if it works, means people will find it useful; upvotes are important but more important to me is giving a good answer

It is a very good answer! =)

Q: Does Audit ban exists *only* on AU?

RavanI am just curious to know,does audit ban exists only in AU of all SE sites? If yes:why? If No,what are the other sites having this special feature?Also why certain sites have audit bans? (AFAIK,U&L don't have audit ban)

Q: Can't upload from Ubuntu

iKodeI turned on the machine one day and some websites would load others not. SSH wouldn't work, gmail wouldn't work. So I opened the my ftp client and tried to upload something and it stopped at 0.1 complete. Pulled out some hair. Solved the issue by plugging a network cable into the thing. That ...

@hbdgaf Huh? Lawsuit? :/
@NathanOsman Good one! +1! ;-)

@hbdgaf toxic ?! - I was sleeping so that's why no reply. Hi - good to hear from you! :)

@NathanOsman Looks cool, but I have a pretty hard time understanding your little George... As a German native, I would wish subtitles, or a voice with less American accent and pitching effects...
@JourneymanGeek No, I've already visited that page and it's none of those connectors. But I've taken a photo. Would you mind looking in that room? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/22622/bytebots-garage
@Rinzwind Your promised vote from yesterday askubuntu.com/a/681735/367990

@ByteCommander I ran out of time for subtitles tonight but I fully intend to add them.
All of George's other videos have them.

8:47 AM
@Ravan your answer isn't wrong. It's an alternative

@A.B. Oh really..I deleted before getting down vote..=)
@A.B. will please have a look here

@Ravan why the `ls` command?
why not `sudo tar xf jre-8u60-linux-x64.tar.gz -C /usr/local/java`
why only extract one archive?
@Ravan Why `sudo gedit …`
and not `sudo -i gedit …`
or `sudo nano …`
@Ravan A good answer you've tested on your system, before you publish.

9:03 AM
@A.B. sorry...=)
don't understand

@A.B. Better gksudo gedit, I think. Or sudo -H gedit. but sudo -i???

Consider this bit of code:
#include <SDL/SDL.h>
SDL_Surface *background = NULL;
....

How would I describe what is going on here? Is a function being called with a pointer?

@j0h Homework?

j0h
or a varaible in the function SDL_Surface is being assigned NULL?

@j0h Ah, no...

j0h
nah, I wish i could take an SDL class

10:50 AM
A variable SDL_Surface is initialised to be a pointer to background but with a value of NULL;

j0h
But its not HW, and I legitimately dont know what its called, or how to reffer to this type of structure intelligently

i int = 0;
--^same

j0h
So is the data type "pointer"?
oooh i see...
so is the pointer = NULL the memory address or the contents of that address?

:-)
How long have you been programming?
Do you know what pointers are?

j0h
I had a 10 year break

Q: Review queue bugged?

psusiThey seem to have broke something real good today. The review queue shows over 1k late answers. I looked at two of them and they ( the flagged answers, not just the question ) are from years ago.

CheckInstall is a computer program for Unix-like operating systems which eases the installation and uninstallation of software compiled from source by making use of package management systems. After software compilation it can automatically generate a Slackware-, RPM-, or Debian-compatible package that can later be cleanly uninstalled through the appropriate package manager. CheckInstall monitors the installation phase of a normal software build process and notes the files that are added to the system. It then builds a package that contains these files, using additional information gathered from...

I myself think that it might be a GNOME language pack issue, but if anyone without GNOME gets it too, then maybe not.

Btw, great answer by @SimonRichter

A: How to restore ssh_config file in /etc/ssh

Simon RichterThe file /etc/ssh_config is a configuration file, which has special handling in dpkg, so it is preserved across package upgrades. If the file is deleted, this, too, is preserved, so merely reinstalling the package will not fix the problem. Your choices are, to either completely remove the pack...

@ParanoidPanda to be honest - no idea - I only know it is a good extension because I installed it on my wife's notebook in LO5, 'cause she is writing novels and is very satisfied with the capabilities of the tool.

user136984
Hmm, well I might have a look at it, but I would prefer to just get the built-in capabilities working, because it is suggesting words to me as I type, so it must know something.

user136984
@A.B.: Do you use LibreOffice 5?

@Serg - shocked to death because of this -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/24541976#24541976 ... was not my intention ! =)

@ParanoidPanda yes

@cl-netbox oh, no,no,no. I've tried that before. One day, my family got some beers, and had kind of upsetting talk for me, so I kept on drinking and drinking, and added a shot of cinamon whiskey (Fireball, anyone ? ), and pretty much finished a pack of smokes in about 2 - 3 hours. I was puking whole night O_O Felt like sh*t in the morning

user136984
@A.B.: Do you have any idea about this then? :)

@ParanoidPanda Don't use numbers in you word =)

3 dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current 2
4 gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current 1
Why does 3 not work, but 4 does ?

user136984
If you mean changing all the UK ones to US, I have already tried that, and it doesn't make a difference.

@A.B. @ParanoidPanda I just checked and what makes me wonder : on my LO5 language-selector-gnome came with install automatically and - dpkg -l | grep hunspell output give : hunspell-de-de and hunspell-en-us.

@ParanoidPanda sorry, Default Language
@Serg ...

user136984
3:08 PM
Ah... When I changed it to:

dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current "uint32 2"

Ah man, break almost over...

Found it

user136984
Western = English (USA)

That one above works

user136984
3:09 PM
It works! :D

@serg works here

user136984
But how do I get it working for English (UK) as well?

<.< @ParanoidPanda we both got things working at the same time ! Productivity is contagious

@ParanoidPanda Should i write an answer?

user136984
Yes

3:11 PM
@ParanoidPanda please make a test and install hunspell-en-ca

Ubuntu On-Air is announcing the Ubucon winners on ubuntuonair.com now!

user136984
@A.B.: Why, what is that?

Sorry, forget it
@ParanoidPanda sudo apt-get install libreoffice-l10n-en-gb

user136984
I figured out how to also get English (UK) working by the way. It was by installing language-selector-gnome and then selecting to install all that is needed when opening it:

user136984

user136984
3:15 PM
@A.B.: Yeah, it installed that too along with the other thing you mentioned.

user136984
And it is working now! So probably include that in your answer. :)

3:26 PM
Mkay, me cursor changed after using gnome-tweak-tool, but not when i use dconf to do it manually. Dafuq ?

@Serg Dafuq?

@A.B. just a different way of saying WTF, in the US a lot of people pronounce "the" as "da"

@Serg Did you relog? Sometimes that's required

@RPiAwesomeness I was using sudo -____- that's why it wasn't working. I'm still not 100% happy with all the dconf, gconf, gconftool-2 mess. It's like, which one do I use ?

ikr
They seriously need to figure that out, it's not well thought out

3:35 PM
@Serg not sudo

OK , quick question guys, what do you all get for dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current ?
I get uint32 0
no matter what there is uint32 present

@Serg same here

@ParanoidPanda ? ^

@Serg Does it count that I get nothing?

user136984
@Serg: No output.

3:40 PM
Is "THANK YOU SO MUCH" rude? Only capital letters. :)

@A.B. If you don't put the smiley after it. =)

o_O @Terrance and @ParanoidPanda that's . . . interesting . . .what Ubuntu are you guys on ? 15.04 ?

@Serg 14.04.3

@Serg sorry, I meant gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current

@A.B. that one usually works . . .@Terrance what about that one ^ ?

user136984
3:42 PM
@Serg: Ubuntu GNOME 15.04.

>_< this makes me un-happy about scripts portability

user136984
@Serg: For @A.B.'s one I do get: uint32 0.

@Serg uint32 0

@Serg For dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current nothing with 15.04

Okay, I'm gonna use gsettings then. It's so weird ! Why dconf works only half the time ?

3:49 PM
@Serg one interesting thing
...
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current 1
`dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current
uint32 1`
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current 0
dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current
uint32 0
reset via dconf-editor
dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/input-sources/current
NOTHING
@Serg ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Hmmm, so dconf-editor somehow messes up the dconf schemas ?

no, only for default values
dconf read … returns nothing, if the value is the default value. But only if the default value isn't set via set

balls . . . I found a nice question which asks for changing cursor based on current language, and only now noticed that OP wants the text cursor inside text fields of a program, so not the mouse cursor
And I got it working pretty good with the mouse pointer :(

@blade19899 It's completely unclear, but I think he is talking about the "program files" folder.

I remember, way before I knew anything of Mac OS X, on Windows, I saw that I can change the folder icon to anything I wanted, I selected the Firefox icon, and applied it to the "Mozilla Firefox" folder in "Program Files". I was trying to make it open Firefox, when I clicked on its folder, which know had the firefox icon. Never got it to work.

user136984
Why is there an LTS release and a non-LTS release? Why not just have one release?

user139252
@ParanoidPanda Why not just get rid of developer editions of everything?

@ParanoidPanda glad you enjoyed it.

user136984
@HeatherBrown: I guess it is good for testing purposes and some users want to be a more on the edge, and others like a long time with a stable release.

user136984
But there comes a time doesn't there when there is only an LTS release?

4:26 PM
@ParanoidPanda Yes, it is the non-LTS releases that lead to the LTS.

The Surface Pro 4 was announced an hour ago.

A: how to login a tty at startup

SergA simpler solution to running a program, IMHO would be to combine the --autologin flag of getty and a function that runs your desired commands from .bashrc . Part 1: autologin to getty As you may or may not know, TTYs are opened with a getty program as a startup service in /etc/init/ directory...

How soon after the release of 15.10 will they announce the name of 16.04?

@Serg fix the script, after the print "true$, needs to have after the $ "}}')

@Terrance thanks for pointing out, damn line wrap :/

Or, you can take your line from below, isTTY=$(tty | awk '{if ($0=="/dev/tty1") {print "true"}else{print "false"}}')
@Serg I figured that is what happened.

K, done

+1 Works good! =)

no, the bottom line was meant as addition
I was matching /dev/tty with regex there
fixed again

Q: How to upgrade current LiveUSB image when booting from it

Paranoid PandaI was thinking about this after asking this question Can I make a LiveUSB from a LiveUSB?, and when @ByteCommander finally suggested it as a more interesting question I decided to ask. Is it possible to, say, boot from a LiveUSB running Ubuntu GNOME 15.04, and then upgrade that image and overwri...

user136984

@ParanoidPanda I have actually never tried that before. I guess I could set up a virtual machine with a liveUSB and try it that way and see what happens.

@Terrance: How would you even get it to upgrade itself? Through the normal upgrading mechanism?

@ParanoidPanda don't live disks load to ram? I would just try just try dd-ing it and find out if that is the case

@ParanoidPanda Probably. I need to set one up first to see if that is even a possibility.

@ByteCommander closed-captions are up now.
