And another fantastic question:

Q: What's your Ubuntu question? Be specific

Junming ChenEverything goes well, until I installed Steam and reboot my laptop. I have tried, "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao" "sudo apt-get update" "sudo apt-get install touchpad-indicator" and "sudo -i" "modprobe -r psmouse" "modprobe psmouse proto=imps" Nothing happened! Help help help!

Anyone know a way to improve this :
`ls -R 2>/dev/null | grep SOMETHING`
where once SOMETHING is returned it also gives the working directory of the file?
I would be running it from /

find

I really am not good at using find

or locate --existing
Ask a question! :P

It always starts confusing me after reading man, and I never make it through it all the way
one uses a db right?

3:08 PM
locate uses a db, that's why i added --existing (man locate for more info)
find does not

so how does find actually find?
yeah i'm in arch right now I don't have locate installed i guess..
find uses regex?

Oli
it can (with -regex and -iregex) but, no, it's usually just a wildcard glob on the filename
(and IIRC -regex and -iregex operate on the whole path, which can catch people out)

is it like
find [path] [SOMETHING] ?

Oli
so if you want all files with banana in them, you'd run find . -name '*banana*'

i still will have to redirect stderr

Oli
3:12 PM
Why?

jrg
@Seth Yes I have. Need to roll with windows for another day or 2, then I'll try Linux.

@Oli I am not on ubuntu right now, and when it does my search (unless I sudo) it gives lots of error for permission denied

Oli
Okay, that makes sense. Searching somewhere you don't have read permission will do that.

I don't know where I would redirect the stdout though.. it gives a /n error if I do it at the end
newline
zsh: parse error near `\n'
maybe if I use bash
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

Oli
Pretend that I'm not omniscient and can't actually see over your shoulder and what it is you're actually running.

3:17 PM
oh, sorry the command prior
`find / -name '*mirror*' 2>`
yeah I am in class right now kinda distracted

Oli
You have to redirect it somewhere. /dev/null is as good a black hole as any.

doh
yeah that worked :)
thanks @Oli
and @Fabby

@NoTime: >:) @Oli: you're just too nice! ;-)

I wonder if I can parse that better.. not now but later :)

Oli
find also has a range of -exec-style flags that make doing something with the results a bit easier.

3:23 PM
I'm in class so I can't mess with it too too much, but i see some of the exec* in the man, so if it returns it will run it.
-ok seems nice
and the -printf (with some other options) would make find pretty

Q: Installing Ubuntu on Macintosh PowerPC, no CD-drive, USB boot not working

Elias AndrasonI've got a Macintosh PowerPC G5 running on Mac OSX 10.4, it's a bit too old to upgrade to 10.5 and 10.4 doesn't have compatibility with much. I decided to install Ubuntu instead, I have attempted to make a bootable USB install however it didn't boot through the USB and I wasn't able to access th...

Party!
@NoTime Did you see my first Youtube tutorial? It's pretty bad, but most first videos are.

3:38 PM
like - lol < make the laughing stop I surrender

I @RPiAwesomeness i haven't watched any videos
I usually skip videos..

Ah, that's fine. I published it last night

I got to be quiet I am in class.. need to concentrate :)

Oh, I see :)
I think I need to record the audio all in one go. The way I did it for that video didn't turn out the best. The audio levels were all over the place because I would talk while recording, but I'd mumble or something, and then have to record an overdub for that later.
I think it'd be better if I recorded what I was doing and talk while doing it, and then record one long, planned, overdub recording - at least until I get better at talking normally while working.

is that your facebook?

@Mateo No, a friend gave me the link :)
I don't have Facebook

5:41 PM
Hey there! I just found an invitation for SE's Careers 2.0 program in my mail inbox. Has anybody in here received that too or has any experience with this?
Or has somebody of you even started the invitation? It says somebody of the network has to invite new members.

jrg
SO careers is kinda cool.
I haven't gotten a job through it, but I have applied.

@jrg I used your link that you posted earlier

jrg
@Mateo cool.
yeah, went in to polish my resume a bit (hadn't done that in almost a year) and noticed I had a ton of invites.

I like that it integrates with other stuff nicely

@jrg I can see the concept but a global site on careers seems a bit over the top. This site I would see go better if it was 100% localized.

5:53 PM
@jrg So you say it's just a great chance no matter if I currently seek a job (I do not...)?

there are some "pull in your resume/linkedin" that are just terrible

jrg
@ByteCommander From someone who has suddenly found themselves unemployed without warning: Update/polish/clean your resume, linkedin & similar frequently.
I currently have a calendar reminder to do it quarterly.
but I need to do it monthly. Software devs with projects that actually end have short job expectancy.

So you say it can also harm possible careers?

jrg
No.
Always keep your resume updated.
Even if you think you're safe in your job, update it regularly.

@jrg I have time... I have a 6 month pre-notice unless the company goes bust (but that is not gonna happen :D)

5:56 PM
Well, I'm not very active (did no real programming since IT course ended last summer... :P), so there would be not much to keep up to date
Can I also chose to hide the profile completely if / as long as I want to?
Because I think at the moment I don't need it, as well as when I finally found a good job, but as the invitation only lasts for 14 days I'm not sure what to do...

jrg
Go ahead and sign up!

@ByteCommander yeah, it defaults to private, until you click on the make it public button

@Mateo So nobody can see it, no community members, no employers, nobody?

jrg
@ByteCommander if you set it to private, yes

Hm, okay.
Then I think everything is fine!

6:01 PM
yeah, because you wouldn't want to show a profile with just your name :)

Yes, I wont fill it out now anyway, but when I think I need it and I'm going to publish it.
I just have to create it now because of the 14 days invitation.
Btw, you know who might be responsible for the invitation? On the page it says that a well experienced community member has to set up the invitation.

@Mateo depends on the name.... "Mark Shuttleworth" would be enough :D
@ByteCommander I think they are probably sent out in batches based on your activity. Not by 1 specific user naming you. I got one a while back :D

@Rinzwind hope he makes a Ubuntu Touch launch video

Mornin'.

his voice is great for those types of things

jrg
6:07 PM
Mornin' @NathanOsman

It is the Osmanian Devil! \o

Hi @NathanOsman

and evening! :D

@Rinzwind Okay, I don't know. I thought maybe @Fabby could have done it as I recently talked with him about studying and careers.

@ByteCommander or maybe they got a bot scanning chat on words like "careers" >:D

6:08 PM
yeah, it's lunch around here. I got a late start...

is Ubuntu Mate 14.10 official or still non-official? :Z

so this is still off topic

Q: Ubuntu Mate 14.10 fills disk

N K LambertI recently successfully installed Ubuntu Mate 1.8.2 on a partition on my computer. The size of the partition is approx. 200GiB. After a couple of weeks running well I am now getting messages that disk space is low. And indeed it is. It's got just a few megabytes left. What's using it all and ...

might be good to just remove "mate". doubt it matters if it is mate or just ubuntu

HDR seemed to work fairly well with that shot.

Okay, I just created the account. Looks good as far as I examined it already. I will populate it with some more info during the next months maybe... Thanks @jrg, @Mateo and @Rinzwind for your advices.

6:21 PM
any else check out the new google translate feature, It is totally awesome: huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/14/… < scans signs and displays the translation as a overlay realtime

How can I prevent files from hiding when I adding the tilde ~ character at the end of file names?
When I use ~ in end of file names it changes to hidden file. How can I ride of it?

Its used for backup files
7
Q: What does the tilde at the end of a file name stand for?

KovikoIn Windows, I believe that files with a tilde in the file name represent files that are currently open in an application. For example, Microsoft Word creates a file with almost the same name as the file you currently have open, but with a tilde in the name. It's icon is also partially faded. As f...

I'd be careful, some might consider them safe to delete with programs

7:26 PM
@Mateo Hi. Then, is there any way to disable it (disable for hiding the files)? My question.

"I'm not mad any more", apparently

You can check the show hidden files in nautilus? That will also show the files beginning with .
This looks similar:

Q: Show hidden .htaccess files by default

Vittorio VittoriI was wondering if there is some method to display .htaccess files by default in every folder i create it. Is it possible to exclude .htaccess files from the hidden files? Maybe from the terminal

17
A: hidden files always being shown

don.joeyAssuming you are using Nautilus (the standard file manager in Ubuntu), read the help files on Nautilus views. To change the default option, you can do the following: In any file manager window, click Edit â–¸ Preferences and select the Views tab. In that tab you can unselect show hidden and...

@KasiyA its a setting in gedit preferences.

A: how to show hidden folders in 14.04 ubuntu

nuxMaximize the folder . Go to the top menu -->View->Show hidden files: Or by pressing ctrl + H For permanently show hidden files, you can Edit>Preferences as below: By terminal you should : cd /path-of-directory ls -a

if you toss filesnames in a file named .hidden those are hidden in nautilus(not command line) too regardless of a dot in front of the name. There is probably no method to add a hidden file to a .nonehidden file and have it do the reverse (never seen that)

7:51 PM
Got so mad that I purged git!

@ByteCommander: I have no clue what you were talking about...

And then i installed it back again because everything is on GitHub.

Ah, man It's true I'm new in ubuntu but I think I know how can I show the hidden files. I also unchecked the tick mark from gedit preferences.

@Rinzwind, do you know how to sync master with you gh-pages. I keep having issues with syncing

never used github :P

7:54 PM
My question is: Can I disable tilde char to making the file to become hidden?

@Rinzwind :(
GGGaaaahhh
Stupid git!

@KasiyA no probably not...

why not? any workaround?

@Fabby You mean about the SE Career 2.0 invitation? Well, it was just a guess.

HOLY CRAP, i fixed. How the hell did i do that?!

7:58 PM
@KasiyA eh? don't get the question. a ~ does not make a file hidden. a ~ is used to create a backup file in some software like gedit. makes it a regular file.
@blade19899 that was me

@Toroidal I found some music video that might interest you: youtube.com/watch?v=WL0SjT_CEE8

@Rinzwind You, sir, are a good dutch man.

@blade19899 I did had to hack your account :=D
but your password was not that difficult

user136984
@ByteCommander :D

@Rinzwind No biggie. It's not the first that someone hacked GitHub :)

7:59 PM
that's true. they make it a sport :D

@Rinzwind Now I want to disable that feature for making them as backup file.

@Rinzwind You guessed my password? How "chocolatemousecomingouttheback" Was my most random password.
Now, i got to change it everywhere

@KasiyA and I already gave the answer. it is a setting in gedit preferences for gedit

But it doen not work

what does not work? I have it disabled and do not get ~ backup files when using gedit. (I assume it is about gedit?)

8:01 PM
It's just use for preventing the file for creating backup files not what I want.
I disable it in gedit, right? now when I rename a file and add the ~ in its file name, it goes to hide.

Just stop naming a file with ~ then, they are used by system, that and scripts will assume that they are safe to clean up

@KasiyA not with me. a ~ in a file name does not make it hidden in either nautilus nor command line. if it does in edit's file viewer I would consider that a bug or at least a stupid design decision.

@Rinzwind At the end of file name?

not hidden :)

8:16 PM
Only files beginning with . are hidden.
And you can still view them with 'ls -a'.

@Rinzwind In GUI mode :)

@KasiyA same. Only . files are hidden by default

It's odd
for you
i think

@NathanOsman and in GUI files inside a .hidden file are also hidden ;)
(* in a file named .hidden)

they hide in the "open" dialog with gedit

8:19 PM
yeah and like I said: that is either a bug or a stupid design decision.

Mine is 14.04.1

who of the gedit developers decided we are not to use a ~ in a file name?

and in libreoffice...

nautilus 3.10.1 and gedit 3.10.4

so a bug with the open dialog?

8:21 PM
even if you want to make a backup of a file I would assume you would toss them in a sub dir like .backups/ and put them in there
and if you want to secure them use a different user than the normal one to block access. and manage the files from within gedit or somethign like that.

Thank you for both @Mateo @Rinzwind

@KasiyA you can right click and check "Show Hidden Files" in that dialog

np :D

Q: Corrected an answer - what should I do about the comments that prompted the edit?

Carl HI posted an answer that unfortunately contained a couple of minor errors. These were pointed out in comments, and I edited the answer to correct it. However, this now means that the comments that say there's a mistake are actually incorrect. What should I do in this situation?

that setting seems to be persistent

8:30 PM
@ByteCommander: OK, sorry! (ref: SE Career)

@Mateo I have 10

10 what?

Windows

nice view?

....

8:38 PM
;p but seriously, they have some cool new stuff right, I tried it out in vm once

yes, I played with Cortana. For how they called her still incomplete and in dev, I dont really think they were over selling it.
Disappointed they arnt stable with Spartan

anyone know how I would glob with alternating cases?

ex: `ls *command*` results in

aAaAaA AaAa aAaAaAaAaA AaAaAa

NOT

AAaAaA aaAaA aaAa AAAAaaa

idk Tom Sellec
normally you would tell it to not alternate in the end

i have tried all kinds of funky stuff.. but it gets hard to read
something like

ls -F [![[:upper:][:upper:]]*
and then trying to add the same with lower, to remove all results containing duplicate cases

because grammar is now an arguement
If you tell it to look for my boss, itll look for anything in that text context
only if you throw a wild card in

8:47 PM
but you can look for [Mm]y [Bb]oss
or [[:upper:][:lower:]]y [[:upper:][:lower:]]oss
or ?y ?oss

if ? is a vaild wild card then yes

yeah its for 1 character

then thats how thwe arguement would work

I need it to go NOT upper upper, and NOT lower lower
but the brackets make it hell

so you want both?

8:50 PM
[:upper:] = one character that is uppercase
no duplicating cases

then wild card it
but no dup cases isnt going to happen

@NoTime export LC_ALL=C

@Mateo is that a command, or you need me to post something

a command, run in terminal, its an environment variable, the sort is case insensitive by default, that will change it to sort with case
if I think that is what you are doing?
I made a test folder with file names:
this is default:
after the command:

crap gotta go, i need the alternating though, dont worry though

8:56 PM
close? or am I onto something different...

i need results to be like

aAaA and AaAa
gotta go though

you might be able to pipe it into sort
| sort

ok ty

after your other command, not sure good luck

9:45 PM
Hello from Elementary OS Luna!
It's not bad, but Freya is way better.
Even if it is a Beta
Granted, I haven't upped the settings yet.
Oh yeah. Much better.
Upped the VRAM for the VM to 64MB from 12MB and changed CPU cores to 2 from 1. Much smoother.
And the boot times. Wowzerz
SSD + Fixed Size Virtual Drive.
It's actually very speedy for a virtual machine.
I think it's actually faster than my actual system...

10:08 PM
Hello from WIndows 10

@Virusboy Cool!
I keep forgetting I have Spotify, facepalm
Honestly. I spent money on this, you'd think I'd remember it!

How is the selection on Spotify compared to Google Music?
I'm paying $8/m for Google Music.

@NathanOsman I dunno, never used Google Music.
You have to pay $10/m for Spotify IIRC
However, I got 3 months for $1, so that was cool

Ive heard a bunch of people dropping spotify in favor of google music.

google doesn adidfy your app up

10:19 PM
Well, actually Google Music is $10/m but I got a discount for jumping on board when it launched here.

@Virusboy If you've got premium the ads go away.
@NathanOsman Oh, nice :)
So, is that forever?

other than that better search engine

The discount? As far as I know, yep.

Noice. Does it expire if you drop the subscription?
...waiting for new Windows 10 preview ISO so I can install and see if it includes Cortana/Project Spartan...

user136984
Is there any way to make suggestions to this package?

10:21 PM
Cortana was not in the Win10 Preview I downloaded a few months back...

@Fabby Yeah, but they just released a new one (I think) 'cause of the whole conference thing they did

Yeah, there was a huge pile of updates in the Win10 world recently

Mmmmh, I should check my mail then...

@RPiAwesomeness Nope, it's not coming out for a couple of months.

And, if it's not in this ISO I'm gonna be upset 'cause it took like bloody 12 hrs to download :P
Oooooo...

10:23 PM
Cortana is apart of it

Yeah, and Skype updated on my mum's Windows phone today... :( Disaster struck!

Oh noes!
@Virusboy You have Cortana in the ISO you have?

Last week when they announced Spartan, they specifically mentioned that it wasn't going to show up for 2-3 months.

@NathanOsman Ah. Missed that.
I wonder how they're doing the whole notations & sharing. Is everything rendered in an HTML5 canvas?

i run everything that would take flash in HTML 5

10:25 PM
Or maybe it's using some proprietary PDF-esque file.
The MS that's been around for a while would do that
However, they do seem to have changed a little more in the favor of the end-user

@RPiAwesomeness yes I do, however she is limited to searching and opening simple idel tasks.
@NathanOsman No I missed that, but I will be happy when it comes into play

@Virusboy Ah
@Fabby Did Windows go BSOD phone edition

not until Feburary 15th ish

:D

@Fabby Second, why the heck is your mom using a Windows phone with you around?

10:27 PM
@Toroidal: I would say: look for the Gnome project itself instead of one of the components...
She got a 200€ phone for only 50€ in the store (but has to pay an extra monthly fee of 12€/month to her service provider) :(
She was scammed into "a good deal" (and she has to keep if for a year!!!)
<sigh>

I have a Galaxy S4. I am required to pay 70 USD because its a smart phone.

@Fabby ugh

@Virusboy does it have a sim card? straight talk sells prepaid sims now.

it has a 4G sim card

@NathanOsman ^ The heck?

10:35 PM
@hbdgaf not the standard ones

Sounds like an issue with the API.

@NathanOsman That API.

Lemme quickly check.

always causing issues

@RPiAwesomeness Did that just start happening?

10:36 PM
@NathanOsman Uh. Dunno. I don't actually check it that often :P
But within the last 2-3 days, yes

Hrm... everything seems to be working from here.
What happens if you click "Refresh"?

Menu closes and nothing changes.

Hmmm... you may have to click "Quit" and then launch it from a terminal.
(Use the command 'stackapplet'.)
That way, if there are any errors, we'll see them in the terminal.

stackapplet: command not found

Oh right :P

Sorry, I forgot that it wasn't in $PATH.

Hmm... I cringe every time I look at StackApplet's source code. It was written nearly five years ago.

@Virusboy - they have 4G sims.

I hate Steam.
HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE
It just bloody erased my entire library again!
For whatever reason, my system & Steam don't play nice.
I think this happens whenever I run dist-upgrade

WUT? It has done no such thing to me. Just don't move your library, or it might nuke your whole / filesystem.

@hbdgaf No. They're gone.
kapoof. No more SteamApps folder
This happened once before
And I have no idea why.
It's really annoying, seeing as it takes me forever to download the games
YARGH
Oh, and my game backups. WHICH I MADE FOR THIS SPECIFIC REASON!

10:48 PM
@RPiAwesomeness it sdeletes your stuff

@Virusboy Yes.
Gone. Kapoof. Finito
And I have no idea why.

hold im looking

A: Steam install can erase my home. How to prevent it?

RinzwindThe problem starts around line 19 in the script "steam.sh.": STEAMROOT="$(cd "${0%/*}" && echo $PWD)" STEAMDATA="$STEAMROOT" $STEAMROOT can become empty here effectively making the rm -rf "$STEAMROOT/"* further into the script the same as rm -rf "/"*. There are patches showing up and there...

@Virusboy I took care of that already :)

then you need to dual boot someting else

I avoid Steam like the plague.
It didn't work very well even in Windows.

10:51 PM
@NathanOsman The issue is I can't play CS:GO or any Valve game without it :P
YARGH

There's always Unix-specific solutions to these sorts of things. Like chroot and stuff.

And none of the "solutions" work for me, since they all mention solutions that use the steamapps folder. My steamapps folder is gone.
HARUMPH

Does Steam need write access to the directory all the time?
Could you make it read-only after installation?

@NathanOsman Not sure. But would that help? It's full on deleting the entire folder...

Yes, there are ways.

10:56 PM
if it were windows you'd be full on screwed.

Well, at least they fixed the deleting / issue in this update:
# Check before removing
        if [ "$STEAMROOT" != "" ]; then
                rm -rf "$STEAMROOT/"*
        fi

I'm going for a smoke. Take it apart, guys...
P.S. I'll end with "Meeh, Forget it! I'll always get in anyway..." ;-)
