@Fabby Oh, I figured it out :) Why'd you ping me?
@jos You here?
@Fabby Figured out why you pinged me.

:)
back.
@RPi_Awesomeness: You still there?

Ah!
I've deleted my comments already....
99% of the time,

Yay, I have new follower on my blog :)

Answers in the "low quality queue" are just that:
low quality...
If you see a high-ranking person in the Low quality queue,
just leave a comment like "You're losing it..." or if twice: "you've lost it"

12:16 AM
I deleted mine :)

If you would have read the Q and the A, it's a perfect answer to the question...
And I know Jos: he normally is more elaborate then this...

@Fabby It is. I just automatically think low quality when I see an answer less than 1 line long.

but sometimes, you have to treat OPs as Kintergarten-level and you're their Kintergarten teacher...
What??? You're a robot? ;-)

And usually I consider an answer only a good answer unless it provides some explanation. Probably should have posted that instead of this should be a comment.
@Fabby No. Of course not.
I'm a GOAT.
Gosh...

That's what the robot thinks and therefore shows it to a human! :P ;-)
:D
So that's what that thing is!!!
:) I finally get it!
I've seen it was a fluffy toy, but thought it to be a
How to put this politely?
Teddy-bear?
;-)
Dragon!
Anyway, I'm off to bed!

12:20 AM
\o
@Fabby Yeah, it's a goat :)

Thanks for deleting and next time, leave a comment for a high-ranking user...
(I would rather have a funny comment myself then a canned comment from the review queue)
Too bad we can't have any high-res pics...
now that you tell me, I can see it, but before I thought it was some home-made ugly teddy-bear...
;-)
You still at your friend's place???
No curfew tonight???

Nope,I'm back home :)

>:)

ah... too bad!

12:23 AM
I've still got ~ 1 1/2 hrs :P

Did the whining at dad about Africa work???
(or you didn't try?)

@Fabby Not yet. I haven't had time yet
He often has to work late
They laid off a bunch of people, so he's doing a lot of the work that others had been doing

Ah... :(

Yeah :(

so be extra nice to dad,

12:25 AM
At least he still has a job though!

tell him about Africa anyway...
and give me some feed-back because I have the next one lined up already!

Will do ;)

and the one after that!
;)
Good night to you and @chili555 and apparently @Oli is still awake as well!
;-)

Have a good evening, @Fabby

12:29 AM
That moment when you realize that while reinstalling, you installed 32-bit instead of 64.

xD
Nice :)

user43095
Guess I'm gonna have to reinstall :/

^ For whatever reason, I find this track really good :D

user43095
Why doesn't the mini.iso work with the Startup Disk Creator?

user43095
I don't feel like booting into Windows just to use Rufus.

12:34 AM
@JeffreyLin Install Unetbootin
Or, if you're feeling brave, you could use the infamous Disk Destroyer

user43095
Is that actually a thing?

@JeffreyLin Disk Destroyer? It's the fond nickname for dd

user43095
Oh, dd.

user43095
How would that work? dd if=$file of=/dev/sdb1?

@JeffreyLin dd if=/full/path/to/ISO of=/dev/DEVICE
Don't include the partition (the number)

user43095
12:50 AM
So you can't have more than one installer on a given device?

user43095
I mean I know that after that you can use gparted to shrink the rest and partition into usable space.

user43095
Also, how does that destroy disks? Is it unreliable?

user43095
I wonder if unetbootin can do multiple installers.

1:06 AM
@JeffreyLin Sry if I'm not answering your questions quickly. I'm working on a graphic design project at the same time and that tends to suck my attention.
I actually haven't tried using dd to a partition. It might be worth a shot. However, just make sure there's nothing on the USB stick as a precaution ;)
The destroyer reference comes from the fact that it's basically the all-powerful god of disk management that you have on a chain. If you run it, it follows exactly what you say, without questioning or checking to see if you're overwriting something.
It's dreadfully easy to accidentally wipe out your entire disk with dd.

2 hours later…
2:49 AM
Or
Or
I'm going to add more than just the logo, but what color looks best?
I'm thinking white or black

@RPi_Awesomeness white for outside black for indoors

@NoTime yeah, sadly I can't make both

What is it for I just jumped onto chat?
@RPi_Awesomeness dd is a great command
you can wipe a disk with if=/dev/null/

@NoTime It is indeed. Just don't ever run dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda

depends what you are using it for I guess :)
I think there is an interactive switch for it.. but honestly if you remember that you probably will remember to check the command itself

3:02 AM
If you're really mad at someone, you could just run sudo dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda && sudo dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sda. Double-erase!

there should be a way to do it with 1s too as well
instead of 0s

Oh, probably
if=!(/dev/null) of=/dev/sda?

probably with a script

Invert the /dev/null zeros

idk.. im not sure how I could check that to see output..
is there a way to redirect the output.. like dd if=!(/dev/null/) of=/dev/null 2> thing
or what is it.. i don't know enough about output

3:06 AM
Yeah

it doesn't look like !(/dev/null/) works

Oh well
Maybe you could do it with python & subprocess.Popen
output = subprocess.Popen(['cat','/dev/null'])
output = !output
that doesn't look quite right

you would be running cat on /dev/null?

??
Is that bad?

There wouldn't be anything in /dev/null I don't think

3:10 AM
Yeah...

i honestly amaze myself I remembered what popen did :)
oh wait.. i think it's /dev/zero/
can you opposite that?

`dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/null 2> thing
^C
[me@Sudo ~]$ cat thing
6426788+0 records in
6426787+0 records out
3290514944 bytes (3.3 GB) copied, 4.19259 s, 785 MB/s`
looks like the 0's go fast

3:53 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness you do graphics right?

4:25 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness I prefer dark shirts so I'd go with the black, but the white/grey combo isn't bad.
I hate total white shirts personally.

@Seth you prefer indoors too don't you :)

I mean who doesn't prefer dark shirts really? Unless you live near the equator or something and it's purely a temperature decision.

I like white on sunny days, i think the back w/ubuntu logo looks nice though

Okay. Every time I see a white shirt on a dude though, I'm light AHHH MY EYES.

i would wear a shirt over/around it

4:35 AM
That makes sense.

4:52 AM
@NoTime no, not especially.

@Seth not being completely serious. I just know I personally like those colours in those situations. hmm I have a UK dictionary for spellcheck it seems
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sda

5:24 AM
@NoTime yeah FF defaults to a UK dictionary for whatever reasons.
I personally prefer most British spellings so I just go with it :P

@Seth I see FF and think final fantasy :)
Just don't say FF7
That was honestly the last Final Fantasy I liked

haha

I am using FFXXXV
I just learned a ton about dd
it's an awesome forum post
I still don't know how to send one's instead of zeros

5:48 AM
@NoTime Yeah. Not yet professionally, but I derp about in GIMP & Inkscape. Mostly stuff for my blog :)
@Seth Yeah, my thoughts were similar. White is kinda...meh
Too undershirt-y
No one saw that accidental swear word that I accidentally typed because I'm touch-typing at 1 AM while watching Gravity Falls

heh
nope didn't
I was looking at tags

@RPi_Awesomeness blog in link on your AU profile?

@NoTime Yeah, should be

@RPi_Awesomeness i will read this a bit. I have an old iMac I wonder if I should put linux on it...

5:55 AM
@NoTime Thanks! It takes a bit of hackery, to be sure, but it's pretty good. Still not entirely bug free, but what do you expect from hardware that's as old as I am? :D

powerpc is from when?

Was originally released in 1996.

quite old ;p

Excuse me. 1991

Q: stop IP address to land on website home page

Rinku YadavI notices that when i type my VPS IP address in address bar then it display website home page. So it may case duplicate content. Can you please tell me How to stop IP address landing on website home page.

Apple, specifically, used it from 1994 to 2006

I had power pcs in elementary I thought
oh, that would be middleschool past highschool
yeah the ones with the colored backs

Hehe, Bubble Macs :D

I have the 1st intel iMac

Nice :D
Yeah, all I've got is an iBook G4. BOOOOring
Might be getting an mid-2008 Macbook, but that's still boring.
My mom's family actually had two Apple IIs at one time.
But, they sold them back when they were still commonplace :P

6:08 AM
have you looked at REFInd (or the ones that came afterwards?) good for Apple stuffs
if you ever want to have your brain hurt (from sheer amounts of info) read this guys stuff.. rodsbooks.com/linux-uefi
that link for uefi

@NoTime No, but I don't think REFInd is applicable for PPC
That's handled by yaboot, AFAIK.

Yeah I am not sure if REFInd itself works, but the guy who wrote it did a bunch of EFI tools. I think he did it for powerpc and up
not sure exact programs tho

Gosh dangit. I'm not going to get any sleep.
I found all of Gravity Falls online for free.
My health is going to go kaput.

@RPi_Awesomeness your video drivers are on bleeding edge?

@NoTime ??
Oh, Mesa?

6:14 AM
just was reading your blog
I thought mesa were defaultish..
oh but I am on arch now though

Well, 14.04 MATE does come with Mesa, but it's outdated and the ATI card in the iBook G4 doesn't play correctly. Displays some colors in certain applications all wrong.
OpenGL mainly, but it also cropped up Pinta.

is pinta gtk?

I believe so, but I dunno

what does mate use for its stuff?

Well, whatever GNOME 2 did would be my best guess. GTK2 probably, maybe GTK3
But, I'm not an expert

6:21 AM
I don't know who to ping about it, but it seems the python wall of superpowers missed that supervisor works on python3... the pypy documentation disagrees with the github documentation too, but - Just saying. pwos pypy github

I am just looking at pinta and was wondering what the problems might be, you might need to find an older kernel or do kernel modification if you want full support?

still uses GTK 2.0 for now

@JourneymanGeek You mean they moved to qt? ;)

did they?

no, it was a joke. gtk evolved....

6:22 AM
ahh
;p

I want to make sure that what I am saying is correct. For older cards, older kernel might work, or if the new kernel was modified to support that older card it would work too right?

ahh
Driver support isn't always in the kernel
and its somewhat more complex than that.

Teach me sir.
*grabs popcorn
@RPi_Awesomeness I like how you write your blog

@NoTime Thank you :D Anything specific?
Or, anything you think I should improve?

Well, I think more typically drivers are kernel modules
but newer 'official' drivers and sometimes even FOSS drivers drop support for really old cards

6:27 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness you are explaining in a way that isn't over the top jargon, or fed to me like a child

@NoTime Sweet! That's what I'm trying to do, so I'm glad it's working!
If you've got any ideas for projects I could do or stuff to write about, that's always gladly accepted!

@JourneymanGeek in the case of Rpi_Awesomes old G4 ATI card and Ubuntu MATE (hence a small issue with Pinta) that this would be a driver issue then?

Yeah, it's resolved in Mesa 10.4

oh ok.. Pinta still works odd though?

@NoTime: could be both.,
hm
Mesa Mesa....

6:31 AM
@NoTime It works, the colors are just displayed incorrectly. It's a known bug

@RPi_Awesomeness: does PPC still get updates?

I am sitting on a bleeding edge machine.. not stupid bleeding, but Arch (stable repo) bleeding. So my stuffs always new.

:)

XD. I'm running a modern, low end machine on fedora.

I am using mesa drivers and my pinta is ok, so that's why I was wondering

6:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, so long as you can compile it, you can update it :)

Not decided what to do with my old fileserver yet.
@RPi_Awesomeness: true

But yeah. The community has kept it pretty up to date.

@JourneymanGeek BSD?

Obviously there's some people out there still using it 'cause someone compiled Ubuntu MATE for PPC :D

You want to have fun compiling for days?
Install BSD in a VM on a host machine with 2GB RAM. then lose connectivity to server intermittently

6:34 AM
I usually start BSD updates before I go to bed...

@NoTime: maybe windows 10 ;p
I donno

i forgot to update my vmware after i upgraded.. i can show you a screenshot of win 10 in vm

Ouch :D
I've got Windows 10 & eOS Freya Beta in Virtualbox
Having a computer capable of that stuff is awesome
Oh, the internet is dangerous
So very deadly

i need to be careful I just crashed my computer
I think that is first time

Dooood. Why man?
Crashing your computer is, like, totally bad for it.

6:43 AM
8 tabs open, opened vmware with 10

Oh, that'll do it :)

may have killed my vmguest too

Oh, thats always good ;)

well it is windows

@NoTime: oh my old fileserver is a 1.6 ghz atom with 2gb of ram ;p

6:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek my computer is 1.5 ghz and 1.8 GB of RAM (think that's rounded down?)

(Swapped it out with a 2.4 ghz celeron bay trail with twice the ram, and a single 1tb laptop drive)

Do you mess with Aduinos too @JourneymanGeek

naw
I have a raspi, and am pondering the odroid equivilent of it
but embedded dosen't interest me

I just saw @RPi_Awesomeness had one, and I thought since you are engineerish you would like those too :)
odroid?
