jrg
ROLAND.

Need a watch?
@jrg it's Dirk Dirty, dude...

No, not a watch.
But would like a name for an app.

2:35 PM
Oh well you've come to the right place :)...
See this face:
<----

/me has disabled images. :(

You can trust this face, for anything.

describe it in words

It's the most snide smile you'll ever see.
@jrg loves it.

$_$

jrg
2:37 PM
ugh

Feeling sick?
Gold watch dust can help with that...

jrg
just disgusted.

by?
That lame "silver" watch you have?

jrg
the lameness of you.

whoa

jrg
2:39 PM
to me more accurate, your joke. :P

:>

:( that's low
Below the... 16th pixel...

jrg
@DirtCheapGoldWatchSpam: Can I purge the 2buntu user queue?

jrg
ok, done.

2:41 PM
No one has contact getsocial about joining, so if there are users in the queue they are fake.

jrg
FAKEEEEEEEEEEEEE
ok, all cleaned up.

lol
Wait, how come the remote sources for pro-forma comments only have so few comments?
I have to go manually import a ton of them now

jrg
they get split.
if it's prefixed with [A], it will only show up for answers.
if [Q], questions.

yeah but it's missing a lot of them

jrg
if nothing, everywhere.

2:43 PM
like the one saying "this does not answer the question yadayada"

jrg
if you'd like to help review them, they be on github. github.com/AskUbuntu/ProFormaComments/blob/master/…
probably time to review them.

@ManjotSingh hey
@jrg I will :D

Can anyone tell how to install webmatrix in Ubuntu 12.01 LTS ?

2:46 PM
I found this.
Sorry, 12.04.
but of no use :(
or suggest for any tool compatible with Ubuntu for asp.net programming.
I tried this too, but failed to understand.

Have you tried Monodevelop?

Nope.

Let me Google for this.

It's in the Software Center.
It's like... the de facto standard for all things .NET on Linux.

2:50 PM
My Software Center crashed always :(

Including... drumroll please ASP.NET.
Have you installed Synaptic?

What is this for?

(You should also report a bug).

jrg
@DirtCheapGoldWatchSpam: let me know when you submit the pull request for those comments.

laul.

2:51 PM
Synaptic is what we used to use before the Software Center. It's an intermediate level package manager.
@jrg aight

How can I take screenshot in Ubuntu?

@jrg I sent a request for one comment for now.

Have a look/

Can you click show details and post the output on pastebin?

:O Me?

2:54 PM
P.S. for an even better screenshot experience, install shutter, and yes, you :)

shutter, that thing written using perl.

All these terms seems new for me.

Yep, that's the effect of Mono on you.

I failed to install Monodevelope :(

2:56 PM
@ManjotSingh I see you don't get out much (in terms of Linux apps).
it's Monodevelop
if you add the e it won't work

Exactly, I am Mac guy :)

3_3

:)
I meant Monodevelop only.

2:57 PM
what do you get for sudo apt-get install monodevelop command?

@ManjotSingh how did you try to install it?

From here.
Trying to download it :)

please start using software-center to install stuff like these

@jokerdino his software-center crashes
He could install muon software center for now

jrg
@DirtCheapGoldWatchSpam well, marco got to it first.

3:00 PM

@jrg oh he must be online then

PFA...

well, I still wouldn't want to install whatever shows up on Google.

I am trying from terminal now.
How are you guys up to date with Ubuntu updates?
Is there news forum for Ubuntu?

I write them.
oh that.

3:01 PM
You?

Lol same here :P

You mean you write them?
Cool.

I write the word "updates".

There are so many Ubuntu news blogs out there :P

You might want to check all of the community blogs.

3:01 PM
Ok.

jrg
updates < see? I wrote it.

I was aware of Ubuntu site and Ask Ubuntu only.

@jrg, wow, so pro.

3:02 PM
Nothing, much. I usually write iPhone applications.

jrg
er, no seriously. jokderino, DirtCheapGoldwatchSpam, and myself are part of 2buntu.com. There is another site called OMGubuntu.co.uk.

Oh! Great.

You all guys write Ubuntu applications?

@ManjotSingh In a month or so, yes :-]

jrg
3:03 PM
no, we write news about ubuntu. and we have our plethora of sources.

I hope you are not joking guys.

@ManjotSingh and there is also Webupd8.com, iloveubuntu.net, and so many more

jrg
no, we aren't. there are a lot of ubuntu blog news sites out there.

Forget about. Please let me know how can I write asp.net in Ubuntu?

lol...
Monodevelop.
sudo apt-get install monodevelop

3:04 PM

Q: VB.NET programming in Ubuntu

flutefluteI have just started at sixth form college, and I'm going to take a Computing A-level. I have been informed all the programming in the first year is in VB.NET on Windows (I believe you are allowed more freedom in the second year...) I do have a Windows XP partition and you can download Visual Bas...

I tried but terminal halt at above statement.

jrg
that should cover it for you.

3:05 PM
Did you install this Ubuntu on a hard drive?

Yes.

Okay, well, disable the cd rom in your software sources.

Earlier, there was Windows 7 but it got crashed.
I tried with Ubuntu latest version and started development on text editor.
Now, I can't write code of asp.net on text editor.
W3School is recommending for Webmatrix and all.

lol w3school

jrg
gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhg.

Yes, this is where I learnt HTML, CSS, JS, jQuery, AJAX, XML etc.

jrg
GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH BEGONE!

Now, moving towards asp.net, PHP and xml.
W3fools?

jrg
3:08 PM
use MDN, or Opera's docs. Please.

PHP *_*

You are mistaken, it is W3school.

jrg
Don't use w3schools. for the love of web standards and compatibility, don't.

gaaah.
Why?

jrg
read the w3fools link above.

3:09 PM
I know this source of learning web-technologies.
I read.
Or you recommend any book or resource for it.

He just linked you to two other stuff.

I am getting flummoxed.

jrg
basically, it boils down to w3schools has no affiliation to W3C, they have poorly written and inaccurate documentation, and they have no accountability to the 'ruling' web standards bodies.

@ManjotSingh Mono, that's why.

I saw both links, quite lengthy.

jrg
3:11 PM
MDN is the resource for web standards. you'll be able to find almost anything you want on there, as long as it's related to web development.

jrg
it's the same reason we prefer people use askubuntu instead of the ubuntu forums - if something is wrong on askubuntu, we can fix it - there is an edit button next to every post. Whereas with the ubuntu forums (and w3schools), the community at large can't fix stuff.

How to reach this above screen?
I am looking into MDN.

type sofware sources in ŧhe dash

I don't them.

You accidentally a word.

Sorry, I don't have software sources in the dash.

actually, you are right. they removed the .desktop file for 12.04

So, now what next?

open a terminal and type software-properties-gtk

3:17 PM
It can be found in the system settings as well

Good
now click on other software
disable the CD rom,
do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install monodevelop

I don't have option for disabling CD rom.

jrg
updates?

Oh wait, my mistake
it's on your first tab
the Ubuntu Software tab
disable it from there

3:21 PM
Done.

good now:
2 mins ago, by Dirt Cheap Gold Watch Spam
do sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install monodevelop

hi everybody .please see my question askubuntu.com/questions/233229/…

Terminal got stuck, then I start new instance of it and now this error.

3:24 PM
@zohreh needs more cowbell.
Please put spaces after fullstops.

Me?

@ManjotSingh how did you get a google.list?

no, me

@ManjotSingh no @zohreh

How would I know?
I just pasted sudo apt-get update in terminal.

3:26 PM
e_e...............

jrg
excuse me, but this is your period reminder that all multimedia formats suck. big-time. ok, bye.

okay tell you what,

Sorree.

disable the google line in the software sources
(though hast confused me, sire)

Updating.
Done with updates, what next?

3:32 PM
install monodevelop

Wait, I got Update Manager window.
Should I go for Install updates or what?

1 min ago, by jokerdino
install monodevelop
updates are obviously necessary.

Ok.
It is downloading.
Anything else is required?

yeah, stop usiing mono

Why?

3:35 PM
because mono, that's why.

@DirtCheapGoldWatchSpam recommended.
Can I have dreamweaver too in Ubuntu?

jrg
no, it's mac and windows only.

Oh wait, isn't Adobe suite available on Linux?
/me trollish

Ok, Is anything else required for web pages development?

lol

3:38 PM
I follow MDN from today onwards,

@ManjotSingh Bluefish is a good editor to have

Will it available in Ubuntu Software?

yes
See if the software center comes up now

Yes.
I am using basic text editor.
It is now opening.
Thanks.

cool =D
okay now
you have monodevelop and bluefish, right?

3:41 PM
Yes, both are installing.

cool
install a feedreader like liferea,
and add some blogs =)
when you are done

feereader for?

You will learn about ubuntu from them
(and you should, if you are going to use it for web development)

Thanks for your valuable time and help. (for all guys).

No problem, that's what we're here for.
To look at screenshots and type commands.
And in my case, to look a little creepy with this gravatar...

3:44 PM
Which type of commands?

yay
@ManjotSingh do this, do that, etc.

I try write commands but copy from the sites.
As I am not computer science. I jumped from Electronics background.
I am in learning stage,
Nevermind, I am done with Monodevelop let me dig into it. :)
Thanks once again.
Bye.

WAIT!!! How to handle this EULA?

jrg
tab, enter

3:52 PM
Thanks.

4:11 PM
@jrg interesting link, about w3schools... I certainly thought they were affiliated.

jrg
@iSeth you and a few million other people. :P

Yeah, I know. I hope they aren't taken down though. Its still useful.
Ok, give up. I'm going back to Unity brb.
Ok, back

You are doing Unity 3D?

@ManjotSingh yes.

Cool, I tried in decades for iOS :)

4:22 PM
Kde is just giving me loads of problems... giant fonts, screen brightness issues.. screen resolution, etc.

For which technology are you using it?]

It was Kubuntu.

4:41 PM
We have several questions about a debconf: apt-extracttemplates failed: No such file or directory error when trying to install packages. None are solved. If you have insight into how to solve it, you might want to answer this one which is being actively worked on (or, if it's duped, then answer whatever the master question is). See this for details.

aha! I got past Rick Green again. :D

Q: Are my flags helpful?

Andrea CorbelliniI was looking at the posts I flagged on AskUbuntu to see whether my flags were helpful or not. I saw that all my flags were accepted but two: A flag on a question about computer science which has nothing to do with Ubuntu. The flag was disputed, but the question closed. A flag on a question abo...

Q: Are bug complaints with addressable non-bug causes on-topic?

Eliah KaganSometimes a user asks a question and shows the error message, and the error message clearly indicates that there is a bug in the application. If it weren't for the bug, that message wouldn't be shown. So we know there's a bug that ought to be reported. This happens most often when the message sh...

Q: Should we allow questions that are about releases which are considered End of Life?

Marco CeppiI'd like to rehash this topic as I was under the impression that EOL releases of Ubuntu are off-topic. The site has grown a lot since it was original discussed so I'd like to see if this is something we should continue doing or if we should consider questions about EOL'd releases as off-topic. Q: How to choose the better placement for Sidebar: Left or Right?

Himanshu VyasI have a question about sidebar navigation. I am designing a web page for latest news and placed the sidebar (news navigation) on the right side. My logic was that "On the news page at first people just want to see updates, the other things are secondary. They will go to the sidebar if they want...

Wasn't Adityas edit of the title better? On the sudo question: askubuntu.com/posts/233378/revisions

@Takkat I think so.

Because I made an answer I feel bad to rollback :/

I don't have rollback powers, sorry :(

Editing titles to fit to an answer can be frowned at... well nvm :)

9:53 PM
@Takkat :)

The sidebar thing is really interesting. I wonder if there is a difference from left- vs. right-handed people.

@Takkat idk, thats a good point. I personally want it on the left.

<-- never had a bar on the right side. Only at the bottom for a while

same here.

Also I got used to the windows buttons on the left side extremely fast.

9:57 PM
i want them in the middle
and a sidebar at the top
:D

lol

Only later I realized they always were on the left side (Atari), only the short time I was on Windows I had to get used to them being on the right side.

I got used to the toolbar buttons being on the left really fast.

windows charms on the right side → no-go.

now I can't stand them on the right :D

9:59 PM
windows → no-go.
hehe

I am forced to Windows at work - there I always click on the Firefox Icon left wanting to close it's window.
One more reason to get back home early.

half of the programmers would quit if they'd force us to use windows :D

Yeah, the IT people run Unix on the servers. Windows is for the common people like me.

foot soldier? :D
"you don't need a horse, here's windows!"

sort of - from the administrator's view.

10:06 PM
sorry about that, my internet fell to pieces.

Shattered net - I thought that was on purpose.

:/

Good you managed to puzzle it back to proper operational state.

@Takkat I got quite good at that since my old B netgear.. lol

lol

10:19 PM
I for one like Windows 8

it would be about time now... :)

about time for another porcupine?

+1 yeah. The r was fail.

The urchin has to wait a bit.
