3:00 PM
what?

Chrome has stopped loading css and js files from or.sstatic.net
So weird, I can get to it fine in Firefox

my chrome is sad tab city since the update

Well I'm on a Mac so I can't blame Natty...Just Jobs.

ok so I am starting to get convinced that sending people to brainstorm is the new LMGTFY

As we found out earlier, I'm rubbish at design. Nevertheless :)

3:09 PM
@StefanoPalazzo ooh, needs one fix
Defining the Ocelot or something like that

@StefanoPalazzo Better than I was going to do
I was just going to have a giant mountain

rendering is a bit off too
Any more suggestions? Does "Defining Ocelot" sound okay?

let me think
let's see what's on the page

I could do "Defining the Oneiric Ocelot", but at a smaller font size

yeah

Q: Migrating to Natty (or any other future versions of ubuntu)

NikI am hoping that this question would help other ubuntu users when migrating to a newer version of ubuntu. This should have all the info that they need. So please when you answer try to phrase them into points for easy understanding. I understand that some questions that I ask might have been aske...

wow, why are people upvoting this question!

3:20 PM
@StefanoPalazzo dude that is amazing!
I love it!

@OctavianDamiean thanks, it's mostly a rip-off of the uds website (:

@JorgeCastro cause they don't understand the idea behind SE
@StefanoPalazzo cool nonetheless. Can you provide me the xcf of your Quickly ad?

@OctavianDamiean No, like I said I ruined it by pressing Ctrl+Z a bunch of times, then cutting something instead of copying it

whee Joey seems to like my work OMG! Ubuntu! Bookmark app
@StefanoPalazzo oh ok then I'm going to recreate it
I'd just need to know where you have the code background from

just a screenshot of some random code on my desktop, hang on a sec
sorry this is the best I can do with the stuff I have left :\

3:25 PM
awesome! thanks
thats perfect

hey there's a bunch of design stuff available

@JorgeCastro ah damn you've ninjad me
loves that site

Any more Ideas?
rendering is good now :)

@StefanoPalazzo now move the Defining Oneiric Ocelot a bit up and alls fine
well actually the entire lower text block

@OctavianDamiean removing the dots?

3:30 PM
@StefanoPalazzo no no just move the text up

woo!

The font size could be slightly smaller to give the most important part a little more negative space

@YiJiang indeed
but not too small

Is 'Defining Oneiric Ocelot' the name/theme of the summit?

@YiJiang no, it's just my extreme summary of the introductory paragraph on the website
Looks wrong if I move the text up, there's now lots of white under the text and dots above it
and too few of them

3:33 PM
you know
nevermind.

@StefanoPalazzo then just make the text smaller, the location I mean

I was thinking, just dropping the oneric thing would make it just be more upfront
but nevermind

@JorgeCastro I don't mind if you keep me busy changing it :)

doing that, would bring the wrath of the Jobsian Army upon us!

3:35 PM
I know I can't do a good job alone

I think Mac has an Ocelot in the works (I read that somewhere)

@StefanoPalazzo Perfect!

@StefanoPalazzo awesome :D

@StefanoPalazzo I second that

@OctavianDamiean first!
o.o oops

3:40 PM
meh

I just had to do that

install it go go go!

aw :( I'm on firefox :(

3:42 PM
@OctavianDamiean Eh, what benefit does that have over a bookmark?

@YiJiang a nice huge icon nothing else :D

@YiJiang some prefer the bookmark bar others the new tab page

↑ make your voice heard ;)
I should probably tell Rick Spencer that we're going to send a bunch of users to his blog

who nice :D

3:45 PM
@StefanoPalazzo we should send them here: launchpad.net/quickly
there would be perfect!

Oi
of course!

is on the dots ETA between five minutes and end of this year

@JorgeCastro +1

should I "flag" a duplicate?

@Allan if you have enough rep you should cast a close vote
otherwise, flagging is fine

3:52 PM
@Allan yeah sure

@RolandTaylor k don't you need 2000 for voting

3000 even :)
hey at least you're very close to 2k → editing questions and answers \o/

@Allan if something is a blatantly obvious dupe I flag it and mention it

@StefanoPalazzo got a long way to go before I get a k after my rep :)

there's no way for people to be able to see what's been submitted as dupes until you hit 10k, so alot of it by hand. :-/

3:56 PM
We look at all flags quite carefully, so, if you make a mistake once in a while, flag something for the wrong reasons, that's totally okay. In general, people flagging stuff is awesome, and they do a good job at it

Done

@JorgeCastro put a word in for me - Ubuntu 11.10 should be called Papercut Partridge :D

but then again, due to my time-zone, maybe I don't see the rubbish ones :P

aw I've got 2 votes left today :(

3:59 PM
hey, but normally you should be fine posting your possible dupe in the chat room, this way you'll get more than one opinion

@StefanoPalazzo I will do that next time.

is that a stamp on a package?

@OctavianDamiean on wood

it looks awesome

4:06 PM
@RolandTaylor thanks did it after I installed Karmic

@Allan oh ok. It looks very good indeed. The only small thingy the shadow on the stamp shouldn't be there

@OctavianDamiean I was originally going for the burned stamp like on a coffee packing box but I know people might see it a different way
@OctavianDamiean Been a while since I uploaded something to Deviant working on something for meta.askubuntu.com/questions/1051/…

@Allan uh nice one, tell me when its up :)

\o/ - made my first feedback on the Ayatana mailing list... crowd goes wild?

sorry, I couldn't resist :P I'm kidding of course

4:14 PM
@RolandTaylor That Stefano guys really....... nice ;)

ROFL
I was originally gonna say crowd goes "who cares?"
but then... I decided to be nice to myself :D

@RolandTaylor can you link it up?

Idk :P I'd have to look for where it went (I only joined the list a few days ago)

lists.launchpad.net/ayatana the list is here, I can't find your thread

oh
I should be able to find it shortly
oh noes D:
where is it o.o
>.< pretends to panic

4:24 PM
@RolandTaylor the suspense is killing us

@JorgeCastro Posting community meetings and such is fine (Mod meeting)

:P if it didn't go through I'll just send the same feedback later - was just saying that the dock flipping idea is great, but would be confusing as a default for new users, so instead... (more was added but I'm lazy) ...and leave it as is for default :D

something has changed, either on askubuntu or in chrome, but fixed-width fonts now look even better for me

@MarcoCeppi on a related note Jin was around last night and commented on how the kbd tags could be made better. :)

@JorgeCastro I saw, I really REALLLLYYYY hope they don't become identical Apple kbd style
But that's just me

4:33 PM
@MarcoCeppi not only you

actually I asked for apple style and he said no
heh

Whew, I know that an improvement should be done though

:D

I'm excited to see what he comes up with. He's really on top of his design stuff

4:36 PM
@MarcoCeppi the problem is that Ubuntu doesn't have it's own keyboard thus not distinct keys :D

I wan't those :P

actually we should get the DasKeyboard Ultimate keys :D
and their labels too
please press " " and " " :D

awesome!

That should be the key design for english.se

4:42 PM
@StefanoPalazzo peek out, poke ?

@JorgeCastro the two ads you put up (zeitgeist and unity) are the wrong size

eh?
I copied them from the original meta.SO thread

@JorgeCastro yep commented
squashed

@Allan peek reads and poke writes the contents of a location in memory ;) (or rather it used to)

@StefanoPalazzo ugh, how off am I on them?

4:45 PM
@StefanoPalazzo back in the day

@JorgeCastro should be 220×250, is 220×220

ugh
I am in the middle of doing a unity thing, I guess delete them for now or something?
or if someone can add padding or something I would <3 them

@JorgeCastro I will, if you don't do it first, in a meeting right now

5:00 PM
what do you think?
meh looking at it with another background than white I don't like it ....

@OctavianDamiean I like the idea, but the dots don't work so well with the code behind them
plus I don't they they conform to the brand communication guidelines (not 100% sure on that)

@StefanoPalazzo yup ... working on another version :)

@OctavianDamiean the 'Developer' dot-pattern is White dots on orange, 6mm apart IIRC
dots on dark-aubergine mean "enterprise"

@StefanoPalazzo its the other way around :)

is it?

5:05 PM
Wide spaced dots
When communications are developer lead, or are aimed
at the developrer market, the widely spaced dots must
be used.
maybe I'm getting it wrong tho

heh yeah,
the developer pattern is wide spaced, → either ← white on the more vivid aubergine or white on orange

soon the design team will use AU

or even warm grey on white

so you can just ask them questions about the design guidelines
"How should I use the dots?" kind of stuff

very nice!

5:08 PM
@StefanoPalazzo where are the brand communication guidelines?

@JorgeCastro I've padded the Ads, I hope it doesn't break though - judging from how it currently looks, I've made the white space white at the top and grey at the bottom, should work for the moment

@StefanoPalazzo thanks!

you're welcome

@OctavianDamiean thanks Octavian ;)

5:12 PM

I love the play on words

it didn't work that well with the dots so I decided to drop them ... however the orange header and footer have a pattern now and the get started ... text has a very light glow

@OctavianDamiean That's very nice! The word Quickly is a little too far to the right though, maybe one pixel, or two

@StefanoPalazzo hmm just checked it is centered on the guideline but I can move it

5:15 PM
well, when it comes to text, you can't trust a computer :)))

perfect!
it now has some really nice texture, much better

filesize 60.5kB

the code in the background is release under the Microsoft Code Sharing License, so make sure to write that in bold, red text all across the image
:PPP

5:21 PM
I should really have used code that draws the image itself, that would have been fun

is it just me or is the Libre Office Libre text blurred?

doesn't look blurred to me, just badly rendered
slightly off the pixel grid

I'm contemplating putting this up to see if it gets any down-votes :P
it's not really relevant to our community, though, maybe.. unfortunately :)

shrug
I think it's fine
though tbh
It would be better on meta.SO
so that it hits a programmer audience

5:35 PM
getting new applications is another topic - promote the software center! (or better: apt :D)

well
Jin had a good point last night
that if we ship something to users by default
why does it need an ad?
(Just something to think about)

because people don't know it's there
and it's even easier to not know about installed applications with unity

hmm a featured applications thingy somewhere in Unity would be nice

but i agree that we shouldn't put up too many ads ;)

scrolls through your most useful applications

5:37 PM
the app finding thing is almost finished

doesn't know how one could determine the usefulness of an application :p

neil tells me the dash improvements today will fix a bunch of that

Should I register for UDS?

yes
it's the only way we know to get the right amount of food

ouh almost forgot to tell my dad to register too :p

5:39 PM
what's the deadline for registration?

there isn't really one
there's a deadline for asking for sponsorship
March 28th iirc

@JorgeCastro attendance requested by? Brain or Heart?

just put something like "local ubuntu enthusiast, looking to participate!"
or something

@JorgeCastro I was ask**ed by **Ubuntu
Hmmm that could have come out better!!?

oh, unity 3.6.4 is there \o/

5:52 PM
so I've been using ubuntu for a couple of weeks now, very pleased now I've got photoshop working and all my apps installed
but there's still a few things that just don't make sense
mainly, why do I get asked 3 times for the keyring password when I restart?

oh that's on the site somewhere
it's a common issue unfortunately

and why it is impossible to resume without being asked for a password?
@JorgeCastro I don't mind about the keyrings really as I rarely cold-boot my machine... I sleep-resume

Q: Unlock keyring promts three times instead one time

user3958When I have "automatic login" activated, the "Unlock the Gnome Keyring" box asks for my password. But this happens three times. There are three boxes asking me for my password. In 10.04 the box appeared one time.

(I would hibernate if it wasn't so slow on ubuntu)

When prompted for one I just enter a blank one
and it says "use unsafe something something"?

5:53 PM
Nooo! too slow

hmmm
the answers there aren't very HQ

@JorgeCastro my main gripe is why I am asked for my password when resuming from sleep?

@JorgeCastro Yeah, they really aren't. I'll fix that in a second
dibs dibs!

I think that's a security thing
so that if someone ganks your laptop they can't just log in

@JorgeCastro Can't you fix that in the screensaver settings?

5:55 PM
yeah

@JorgeCastro yeah, if someone ganks my laptop then I've got bigger problems - WHY THE HELL ARE YOU IN MY HOUSE???

I don't care that they have access to my hard drive

you can turn it off

1
Q: Disable locking the screen after resuming from suspend

Ingo GerthOne thing I like for MacBooks is that they are usable within a second after opening their lid when they were on stand by. Ubuntu always requires me to enter my password when I resume from suspend, which can be very annoying. How can I disable this?

5:56 PM
actually, I don't think anyone's asked that question
oh, never mind

I just set the thing for unsafe storage
and I never ever see keyring stuff

that answer doesn't seem to be up to snuff either :(

it seems affected by a bug

@StefanoPalazzo if I change settings in gconf-editor, do I have to restart for them to have effect?

5:58 PM
no

they're instant apply
3
Q: How to disable GNOME keyring?

qbiI want to disable GNOME keyring globally on my machine. So I deleted the lines auth optional pam_gnome_keyring.so session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start in /etc/pam.d/gdm. It seems to me that this has no effect. When I lock in the syslog writes Aug 24 18:37:03 fooba...

this one looks useful
tee hee!

uh that one looks good
didn't even know about that podcast :/

6:15 PM
wheel scrolling in the dash finally works :) dash blur is pretty slow, though (at least on intel)

@htorque oh god you made me want to reboot ... I hope you're happy now ...

:D
just hope the dash will soon open up in fullscreen mode
i'd also like to see all items by default instead of having to expand them every time

@htorque true that
reboots

just put all that into the experimental tab and i'm fine :D

back
why on earth does the partial upgrade want to remove my beloved vim?

6:21 PM
@htorque I think it's supposed to remember what you choose
@htorque you grabbed the tarball I take it?

@OctavianDamiean Because we voted, and decided emacs was better
:D

@MarcoCeppi bah go away ...
:p
uh upgrade failed

6:36 PM
@JorgeCastro oh, i'll try again. no, i'm using trunk.
no, not remembered. maybe planned, but not yet working here.

Just made a multi-threaded php application.

has just found Torvalds master thesis reading mode on :D

7:02 PM
Wow the developer portal looks great
I'm going to predict that by the next LTS Ubuntu will be double the size in popularity it is now.

@MarcoCeppi hopefully

> bump
great bug comment
:D

All I see is a run away locomotive that is Ubuntu just flying towards Awesome town

@htorque link?

7:14 PM
What software can be used to perform one-way-sync with my ipod classic?

7:33 PM
@Greg Banshee and Rhythmbox both support this out of box.
A lot of your questions have likely already been answered on the site
11
Q: Applications to replace iTunes for iPod synchronization?

BubblegumI need to synchronise my iPod Nano (5th generation) with music and podcasts (video and audio). I can use Rhythmbox for music, but does not seem to work with Podcast. So, what application can I use to synchronize my podcats ? Edit : After a week of fight with my iPod Nano, i've definitively uni...

7:56 PM
@MarcoCeppi just hope that that runaway locomotive doesn't get derailed by alienating too many people

@ajmitch Like whom?

like developer annoyed at heavy-handedness from Canonical

@ajmitch uh?

Surely you've seen the debates & issues that people have over the banshee issue?

@ajmitch yes I have but I don't really cope with the opinion of most people
Canonical is a company which is trying get independent which is perfectly fine in my opinion
