12:14 AM
@MarcoCeppi congratulations

6 hours later…
6:18 AM
How do I remove a symlink?

1 hour later…
7:23 AM
my DasKeyboard arrived :D
AWESOME

@OctavianDamiean good morning.
congrats

morning

how does it feel, the keyboard?

morning

@Takkat morning

7:31 AM
@OctavianDamiean how does it look like? Hope we don't see too many typing errors here :P

@Takkat we will -1 @OctavianDamiean for every typo :D

What happened to the thing left to user name? Now some dropbox. I'm confused.

@Takkat gimme one sec.
yes those are tux super keys
and that is the infamous tux super key :D

7:46 AM
@OctavianDamiean now this is really a cool keyboard! Nice shiny tux keys :)

oh boy how ironic ... just when I unplug my Logitech G19 there is an update for the G19 daemon ...

@OctavianDamiean well you won't need the Logitech now.

@Takkat yea but till now I was stuck with a half-working G19 daemon ... and now when I don't need it anymore I get the update :D
that is amazing
I like the new dropdown thingy

@OctavianDamiean me too, but a bit confusing. Old thing immediately showed where you got rep from.
But you can quickly logout now!

@Takkat true now you have to look it up in the reputation page

7:55 AM

I am not able to update to the new natty.I keep getting weird errors,any idea?

@Madscientist weird errors lead to weird ideas :P
What Errors do you get?

Seems to be an error in the script. InRelease does not exist on the server

Any idea how to solve it?

8:05 AM
no idea really (that's beyond my narrow horizon). Wait until fixed?

I wanted to check out the new Alt+F2,was waiting for it a long time.

8:26 AM
Anyone else having update problems with natty?

ever since disabling my login password and entering a blank keyring password, my email password doesn't save

1 hour later…
9:42 AM
the new reputation tab is nice
and it finally includes received bounties

Oli
10:11 AM
Ooo it's fancy
They've also upped the date range from 60 (IIRC) to 180 days

(90)

10:51 AM
Hi gang! :D
will try to boot from the live cd as soon as I find something to boot from! LOL

11:03 AM
@Alvar I was thinking of "Looking Glass". Rather than probably failing to get this no longer supported thus antique project running you may find it easier to create your own fancy (maybe even better) custom desktop with well established methods like e.g. Compiz AWN Cairo Dock (see here for ressources linked at the bottom)

@Takkat well that's not cool! if I new howto write java code better then I could continue withe the project, the idea is awesome and it would be awesome to try it, i don't care how much work I have to do to make it possible just even once! I MUST TRY IT, at least once before I die!

Oli
Argl brain fail, what's a > in HTML?

I've spent the past 70-odd hours breaking a design down and the brain-numbing powers of Photoshop has left me slightly dazed.

> gpg: key not found on keyserver
bah, i thought i could "just setup a PPA"... well

11:17 AM
Ubuntu upgrades can be scary.
proceeds to upgrade to 11.04

@badp You're only upgrading to 10.10 now?

Sent my laptop to HP to have its keyboard replaced. Got it back 4 work days later. Cool, but they went the extra mile and used a recovery CD
2

that's scary!

@badp Ah...

lol, that hurts :D

Oli
11:27 AM
@badp That's ridiculous.

Well, I had backups and I was overdue for a full reinstall anyway

Oli
If I ever have to send back a laptop, I'm replacing the disk before I do.
Don't know what the laws are like in Italy, but if this happened to me here in the UK, I'd file a claim in the Small Claims Court for my time repairing the damage they did. I don't care if this sort of junk is in their disclaimer, it's needless damage that they had no reason to perform.

signed the ubuntu code of conduct \o/
now i can't be mean anymore :..(

@htorque you only can better hide your meanness :P

11:43 AM
but how can i make sure the other party properly translates it back to pure meanness? :D
man what have i done! :D

Only an Ubuntero creates Ubuntu bugs
and becomes a hero when fixing them :P

12:13 PM
@badp are you serious?

@RolandTaylor The Windows Vista boot screen that greeted me was more serious than me

I was considering shipping mine one day to get the screen replaced :(
now I hate HP more

Eh, just remove the HDD

lol
good idea :D

Yeah, I wish I had it earlier

12:15 PM
I hope they will put back in another one (so I don't have to buy a second hdd or a bracket)
I have two hdd slots btw

...and I wish I was comfortable enough with hardware to do it myself.
I'd rather not screw and unscrew things if I don't know what I'm doing, and I don't know what I'm doing.
I've seen my father try that and fail to get the device to boot afterwards too many times.

He bricked his Palm while replacing its "cover" :|

I've had to replace my keyboard before
and it worked
I might do the same with the screen

Once he managed to put a micro SD in the PCMCIA slot
The micro SD wouldn't come out

12:17 PM
LOL

so he unscrewed the keyboard, got the micro SD, screwed the keyboard back, attempted to boot up the laptop and just brought it back to his office for a replacement.
I'm not trying to ridicule him

:P I think he's got skillz

The Palm experience was disheartening. Screw too loose and it wouldn't boot. Screw too tight and it wouldn't boot.
Screw just right, then it boots and you notice the display contacts got loose in the process.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I don't blame him. I haven't tried, that's why I don't have horror stories of my own :P
If you don't try you can't fail!!

^^ if you don't try you can't succeed either :P

Q: How to make unity 2d workspace button trigger compiz expo?

EvanI am using unity 2d with compiz. And I want the workspaces button to trigger the expo in compiz. Can anyone help me?

nice...

@RolandTaylor Success likelyhood is absurdly close to 0 anyway :P

12:22 PM
@badp Not for me it seems, I've taken down almost every laptop I've had and put them back up without issue

Q5. Should I back up my software?

In the unlikely event that your HP product should suffer from a hard drive failure, any software on the drive will be lost. HP recommends that customer make regular backups from their hard drives to protect their investment in software and personal data.

Most HP products ship with a 'QuickRestore' utility, that can be used to restore your original HP software back on to your hard drive.

Responsibility for the software and data you have added to your machine rests with the owner of the product. HP is note responsible for damage to or loss of data or progr
unlikely - well, it IS unlikely that you fu** up a hard drive when replacing the keyboard, so i guess that's all ok :D

@htorque Is the not -> note typo theirs?

@YiJiang quite likely

So are there known issues to look for currently in 11.04?

@badp yes.

12:27 PM
Thanks. That's helpful.

@YiJiang yeah, 1:1 c&p

If you own kittens, find a shelter. If you have babies, ensure that they are not near to the computer.
@badp I took to long to add the second part after "yes". :D

I don't own one, but she basically lives here; she's outside right now though.

+- a few known issues

12:29 PM
@htorque That has been outdated for a while now

well I tried it, and a voice came booming out of the speakers "GIVE ME KITTENS TO CONSUME... NAO!!!"

there are updates all the time, so it's difficult to say "that's broken right now"

not really, but that should give you an idea of what to expect

This is not the first alpha I installed btw :)
I know well that things can be very bumpy, but also change very quickly

lol this alpha is more alpha than other alphas

12:31 PM
so, today, have you had trouble with, say, broken packages/dependencies?

it's alpha quality alpha

With circa a month to the release date? :P

I can't test as often as I'd like :( - broken screen so I have to use a flash drive and a netbook

Q: How to apply a changelog file to packages in a PPA when building from recipe?

rafalcieslakWhen my package gets build by launchpad using a recipe, it ignores the ./debian/changelog file I provide, and it generates a useless one like following: harmonyseq (0.14~natty1) maverick; urgency=low * Auto build. -- Rafal Cieslak <rafalcieslak256@gmail.com> Tue, 25 Jan 2011 16:56:57...

and it was running out of memory on the netbook

12:33 PM
Oh, man, I've gone the flash drive route as well for a week. Painful.

my ppa now says
unity (3.6.4-0ubuntu1ppa1) natty; urgency=low

* This is a test

@htorque \o/

so i don't know what went wrong there
probably kees cook should make his comment an answer

@htorque You got an horrible answer, I don't know if I should mark it low quality or just spam.
I'll go for spam.

it's really strange
"go, ask somewhere else"
:D

12:35 PM
"Go ask your question [here] instead" would be automatic spam for any other value of the URL
I can understand Launchpad is kinda different
but seriously...
bad precedent. broken windows. etc.
useless answer too.

maybe that's what you get for adding a 200 rep bounty :D

Kill it with fire :P

"oh, let's just try"

I don't know if my mail went through,
but my feedback has made it sorta
(part of it)

> Build status Needs building Start in 5 hours
shouldn't be in a hurry :D

12:46 PM
So Byobu is installed by default with Natty now?
I wholeheartedly approve
Now to see if I can get some unity action
installs unity-2d for starters
yaaaay, minesweeper no longer crashes Aptitude

1:05 PM
I'VE FOUND MY USB STICK!
Does anmyone now a way film your screen?
I would like to film something to show you when I'm on the "other side"! ;)
Heeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllooooo????????++

Anybody tried installing google chrome 10 on natty?

please don't shout at us @Alvar :)

I get a error saying its a bad package

I've no idea if you can record your screen in looking glass though
@Madscientist I've just done that a few seconds ago
does it complain about libcurl?

I got the deb package.

1:17 PM
@Madscientist assuming you have the deb-package in ~/Downloads, open up a terminal and type "sudo dpkg -i <path/to/package/chrome-bla.deb> (you can press Tab for auto-completion
it should say something about libcurl, so afterwards, type "sudo apt-get install -f"
this should install chrome properly. don't forget to upgrade regularly :)

Unity 2D mostly works nice

@StefanoPalazzo It didnt even complain abt libcurl,though sofware center didnt allow me to install it

@Madscientist right, do it from the command-line, this way you'll see the error messages

And Thanx

it is alpha software :)

1:23 PM
Yes,now gonna start digging unity code.Wish me luck.

@StefanoPalazzo sorry, I thought you had fell a sleep...

I can't create a bootable usb drive from the live cd, the ubntu software doesn't do anything when I add it

ugh.. I can't update my sources :(

what to do?

1:27 PM
are the nvidia drivers compatible with X yet in natty?

nvidia driver suck....

Q: How to create a screencast?

Riccardo MurriHow can I create a screencast on Ubuntu? What applications are available? The app I'm looking for has ideally all of these features: Can record in a format that can be played back easily on any platform and/or accepted by youtube or another popular video site Can record just a window (instead...

A lot of the questions you have are typically answered on the site already :)

me?

nod

LOL

1:31 PM
Hm, alt-tab isn't something I expected to not work, but Win-number works well anyway
oooh... Experimental 3D support! YAY
I wanted to try that for so long

will try kazam...

Am I the last person to notice windows 7 style snapping screen edges in Unity?

windows 7 stole the "show the desktop button" it's in the right corner instead of the ubuntus left!

software engineering is all about stealing the right ideas (:
:P

hello all

1:38 PM
ahoi @octavian

hi @OctavianDamiean

just returned from the university where I plan to study

Hrm, where's the logout button in Unity?

top-right corner?
@OctavianDamiean Wher is it?

There's just bluetooth and wifi there :/

1:40 PM
@Madscientist Austria

Bump.Know nothing about the country.

@Madscientist you don't know about Austria?

booting inside virtual box!

@OctavianDamiean Nah,I am from a different part of the world.

"slax is starting please wait"

1:42 PM
Just realized something.Alt-f2 keeps sending me to ubuntu software centre

@Madscientist its in central europe
reboots

lol, gnome-panel still works :D

back
@badp on Natty? Of course :)

I meant, still works from inside unity-2d

I like pie

1:48 PM
Unity 3D works much better

indeed
loves scrolling his applications with the scroll wheel

virtual box fails because it doesn't find a graphic card/ driver
what can I do?

@Alvar what is it you are trying to do?

Project Looking Glass is a now inactive free software project under the GPL to create an innovative 3D desktop environment for Linux, Solaris, and Windows. It was sponsored by Sun Microsystems. Looking Glass is programmed in the Java language using the Java 3D system to remain platform independent. Despite the use of graphics acceleration features, the desktop explores the use of 3D windowing capabilities for both existing application programs and ones specifically designed for Looking Glass. There is a Live CD available from Project Looking Glass. The Looking Glass environment is also ...

@Alvar Have u installed Virtual Guest Additions?

1:53 PM
@OctavianDamiean takkat found an iso yesterday
@Madscientist not really what is it?
have never used virtual box before...

@Alvar urgh that looks ... not so amazing

Yours is vm4 right?

@OctavianDamiean shut up! this my dream! :D
@Madscientist vm4? sorry
virtualbox 4

Mybad. Virtual Box 4

@Alvar oh god :/

1:54 PM
just installed it

mh. I've got weird invisible windows

@OctavianDamiean I'm a self learnd java programmer, and I must try this java desktop before I die,
@StefanoPalazzo cool

↑ by the way :)

@Alvar I haven't even read that it was written in Java ... oh god now it sucks twice as hard as before

@OctavianDamiean you can't kill my dream...

1:57 PM
@Alvar oh I'm not even trying to ... Java will ;)

@OctavianDamiean I know... I just must do it... It's just one of those things I have to do... I know it probably will suck more than windows.. but still I must have try it! I just must!

@htorque looks like your bounty may be going into /dev/null :\

quick question: when adding the pub ssh key to launchpad, do i need to add the user@host part in it too?
@StefanoPalazzo AGAIN after AGAIN after AGAIN

I will try to run command & conquer 1 in virtual box some day, tha tmight work..

@StefanoPalazzo i'm trying to get the recipe thing to work here, but i lack experience with the whole system
@StefanoPalazzo a "normal" ppa build worked fine, it just took what was inside of debian/changelog

2:01 PM
@htorque you mean when pasting in the key?

I suspect it may be just a typo :(

@OctavianDamiean yeah

I always do. It will take that part as the identifier

the key is "ssh-rsa ... user@host"

the human readable one of course

2:02 PM
so i could also make this "foobar"?

@htorque or phantomas@secrethouse

@OctavianDamiean just tried it (well, not the phantomas one :P), seems to work
now off to create a unity branch, create a packaging branch, and then i'll hopefully get the whole recipe thing :)

needs a new mouse does anyone know a decent mouse there my ring finger and little finger don't knot when using it more than an hour?

depends on the size of your hand i guess ;)

@htorque cause my Logitech G500 is not really what I need
a few years ago there was the Logitech MX1000 ... that was a damn comfortable mouse ...

2:12 PM
i used the MX510 for a long time

well that one has pretty much the same shape as my G500

:-o
nothing for me :D

it is a really good one tho ... very very comfortable

> bzr: ERROR: Permission denied: "...": : Project 'htorque' does not exist.
haha
i'm too stupid for this
dude, i have added a gpg key, a ssh key, signed the code of conduct, created a ppa, uploaded to a ppa, and created a branch - #WINNING! :D

@htorque you're stupid?
that's a shock D:

2:21 PM
hello!

@KaustubhP hi

@htorque don't understand this. I can read everything here :/

@htorque hello!

ok I officially hate the guy who designed the USB port too

@OctavianDamiean why?

2:26 PM
@KaustubhP hey

@RolandTaylor hi!

@htorque: for bzr this 5 min tutorial helped me a lot.

@Takkat yeah, i just forgot the ~ in front of my user name :)

>.< I just read about BOB
needs to sit down

@KaustubhP because it is not that universal as they said
@RolandTaylor BOB?

2:36 PM
@OctavianDamiean microsoft, bob...

@RolandTaylor I have no idea

@OctavianDamiean ahh, well there are universal versions of USB :p

btw
why does ubuntu-bug insist it must use firefox for bug reporting?
I've set Chromium as my default browser

PS: For those who love the @ sign instead of the drop down
8

@badp just replace every firefox item in /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache with chromium

2:39 PM
@OctavianDamiean sweet :D

<3 Marco Ceppi!

@MarcoCeppi thanks!

photo.SE rox :D
Hmm, that interesting, 2 Chrome Incognito windows cant help you open two gmail accounts.

3:03 PM

hey @MarcoCeppi, can you reopen the troll bridge?
@KaustubhP incognito still saves some info, that's why

@RolandTaylor Done

Octavian DamieanIf you want to change the reply-to setting on your mail account then do this. In Evolution goto Edit -> Preferences. In the Mail Accounts page select the account you want it changed and hit the Edit button. On the Identity tab set the email address you want to set as your reply address in t...

maybe I should remove the last one tho

@OctavianDamiean :D

How do you run apt-get install <some pkg> and restrict it to a specific sources.list.d/ file?
seems like I used to do this in yum with --enable-repo all the time

3:09 PM
@johnml That's a great question for the site. Could you ask it first so we can discuss in here and ultimately put the answer on the site for others to benefit?

@johnml why not just use synaptic?

@RolandTaylor maybe he needs a command-line solution

@OctavianDamiean I know, but if it's just convenience, synaptic is fine

@OctavianDamiean ...are you a goon?

@MarcoCeppi a dragoon? tremulous?
@JorgeCastro appluaso

Q: How install an application with apt-get and restrict it to a specific repo source?

johnmlI used to do something similar with yum on CentOS. I think there was a --enable-repo and --disable-repo param. Is there something that exists for apt-get install <some pkg> that will restrict to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/<somefile>?

@MarcoCeppi woot?

That's all I need to know :)

@RolandTaylor this is strictly a web server, and I'll eventually need it added to a chef script

3:20 PM
@johnml ahh

3:51 PM
@MarcoCeppi yes it is a blank keyboard ... well except of the tux meta keys obviously :D
I seem to be too stupid to answer your question there ...

@OctavianDamiean haha. I just don't get it though - why blank keyboard?

but it isn't about the labels actually it is about what kind of keyboard it is

Oh, what kind of keyboard is it?

gimme a sec to find the article which describes and depicts it
every key is basically a real switch

testing

3:58 PM
@OctavianDamiean Got to get one now.

@MarcoCeppi you can even buy one with labels I just decided that I don't need them anyway

wow, the Flash plugin installer is really a 160 MB download?

@OctavianDamiean True and if you'r a dvorkian or whatever it helps

Didn't Adobe publish a 64 bit version of Flash?

yeah
I'm using it

4:09 PM
okay, so I guess I can avoid the 160 MB of lib32* dependencies of flashplugin-installer.
I guess I'll download the deb directly from Adobe, then.
Do they have a repo, maybe?

@badp I think they do...if not it's in the partner repo

@OctavianDamiean your Unity configuration answer is astonishingly excellent!
bit random :)

@StefanoPalazzo hehe thanks :D

4:29 PM
@MarcoCeppi it's in a ppa called sevenmachines

4:48 PM
hmm this is strange ... for some reason people try to move away from the command-line ... why is that? I mean it is the most powerful environment and an UNIX based OS
I'm quite worried ...

So long as there are servers the command line will never die.
