Q: Creating .desktop files to use on the "Open with other application" tab

brunopereira81I am looking for the specs necessary to build a .desktop file to be used in Ubuntu 11.10. Many terminal applications or even GUI application do not show on Open with other application tab anymore and I want to create a .desktop file that makes that application be listed on the list again. I kn...

I'm guessing that it's not a good thing when sensors tells me that the CPU temperature is at 116C

@ajmitch No, it isn't.
My hard drive hovers around 60C.

Given that the CPU fan isn't spinning, I'm not particularly surprised :)

@ajmitch lol, turn it off!

...or blow on it real hard.

shouldn't the BIOS shut it down at that temperature?

8:32 PM
lol, wait a bit more and all your neighbors will hear from your house is: noooooooooooooooooooooooo!

@htorque It sure should.

@htorque has to be set that way, some are by default, other are really not
burned a couple of AMD while overclocking when I was younger, you dont want them to shutdown just because of a little temp do you. I mean, it is overclocking!

amd opteron 144: 1.8ghz @ 2.9ghz :D - never had temp issues though :P

@thats your system atm??>

my i5-2500k reaches no more than 74°C (stock), so i set 85°C in the bios for emergency shutdown
nope, see ^^

8:42 PM
best ever i did was on a Intel Pentium 2 slot model, from 400Mhz to 850Mhz stable, that thing burned but was luxuries at the time :P

even though the 2500k is supposed to be an OC beast, i'm no longer interested in that

same, current system is a 4 core AMD at 3.2Ghz, ppl say it runs stable at 4.1Ghz on air, 4,6Ghz on water cooling with some v mods. My reply: not interested!
my nerd rage atm is to make total silent systems, no fans what so ever!

Q: Nautilus statusbar visibilty - Quickly check free space

JeremyIn prior versions, I would open Nautilus and check the statusbar, which would tell me how much free space there is. Now, the statusbar isn't shown by default. I know you can enable it from the View menu, but 99% of users won't do that (and I'd rather not do that, if possible). So, is there some n...

wtb votes!

the only component i'd worry about with silent systems is the PSU. i don't think i'd have the balls to go fanless there. :P

there are few very good one tough, expensive as hell but good. Im also cheap so my psu has a fan

most "silencing" action i've taken: buying a ssd+wd green instead of a wd black, using only the i5's on-die GPU.

8:53 PM
I use a sapphire fanless for GPU and a big ass CPU cooler that allows me to run without fans, stable 3,2Ghz at 56C. this is my GPU at the moment insanetek.com/news/1-web-and-industry-news/…

long launchpad build waiting list is long. - launchpad.net/~jamesgifford/+archive/shoesrb/+build/2880951
9 hours.
And it's a shell script package too.... :P

what's shoes? :D

jrg
Think quickly, but for ruby.
and cross platform.
e.g, if I write something for windows, it will (mostly) work on Mac/Linux.
Ok, time to learn mod_proxy (now that I can't do anything for the next 9 hours on this project)

9:47 PM
right, killed that overheated computer

jrg
?

it was just an old system, swapped that motherboard & CPU in yesterday
CPU temp peaked at 117C before it shut down

jrg
Ah.
Ouch, not cool

no, quite hot

:-(

9:49 PM
it was only used as a NAT box & terminating the ipv6 tunnel for the office, nothing really important

10:01 PM
@jrg I know!!
9 hours for my server to be built.

jrg
I seriously want to know what the holdup is for them.
And why we can't do a distributed build system.

jrg
similar to SETI@HOME
.... so many IDLEs.

I know... that's so frustrating.

jrg
WHY?!?!?!

10:03 PM
They have 15 machines for armel!!!!

jrg
I don't care about that, armel is the next big thing.

because on armel everything takes ages
"oh the build failed, let's wait another week then" :P

Oh no wait - that's for distribution.
There's a bunch of Mozilla stuff building now.

jrg
Oh, yeah.

@GeorgeEdison why are you surprised?
PPAs can be horribly slow at times :)

10:05 PM
I'm not surprised... just impatient.
Why don't the official distribution machines build for PPAs in their spare time?

because they're set up quite differently

Oh, I see.

distribution builds run in chroots, PPAs in virtual machines on xen

Ah, makes a bit more sense.

Q: Stopping the Unity global menu from hijacking the menubar from my app

KazadeI'm developing an application for Ubuntu that (ab)uses the Gtk::MenuBar class to create a custom widget. It works fine on Gnome-Shell, but on Unity the widget gets hidden. I know I can disable the appmenu when I run the application using UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 but I want to disable it permanently in ...

10:08 PM
So if the armel VMs are idling, then the other VMs get more of the CPU?

can't you just derive from the menubar class and then it won't get picked up?

(...and consequently build faster?)

Not sure how resource allocations work, and how many VMs are on each machine - armel might be a little different
last I recall, armel didn't have xen

Oh. Just curious.

good night all!

How can I install the recommended packages for a particular package?
Example: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop --install-recommends
...except that doesn't work.
