Q: Can't format hard drive back to Windows 7 after fully installing Ubuntu

Larry HuntI've searched the posts and can't find the exact answer I need. I've installed Ubuntu to my hard drive completely, and wiped my Windows 7. I do not want Ubuntu anymore; I want Windows 7 back. But when I put in my CD to reinstall Windows 7, it said my disk partition needed to be in ntfs format. I ...

@TheEvilOne Yes really.
@GeorgeEdison You around? i've got a cool IRC bot that I think you'd be interested in playing around with.

IRCBOT?
@jrg i like working wtih IRC bots

jrg
i'm about to bounce him, but he'll be right back

1:55 AM
@jrg unfortunately, i'm going to call you out on FreeNode stuff :P such as a failure to file a registration form for channels in the # namespace :P

jrg
@TheEvilOne Oops, guess I have to do that.

As Marco said, sites down.

askubuntu runs for me :/

It's back

@MarcoCeppi right, I thought you might have been talking about your own site - AU is still working for me

jrg
Back now.

@ajmitch You probably were seeing cache, the whole site was down briefly

1:59 AM
i could probably write a tutorial on configuring nginx & php5-fpm :P
not to mention convert the packaging session into some kind of blog post or something

Anyone know what the "ooops" is in the version string of this: packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/libjs-jquery-ui

@GeorgeEdison I think it's just to make it larger than the 1.8.dfsg version that was previously used
the other option is to add an epoch, which is rather ugly & permanent

What a weird workaround... :P
At least I know they're a creative bunch.

A: How to install 100 server's less effert?

OxwiviIf you're looking for some degree of automation on bare metal installation, there's Orchestra. For cloud, specifically the Amazon EC2, you can use juju for completely automated deployment.

Is that better off as a comment?

OxwiviWriting this answer, I realized I do not know anything about Orchestra. There's no link to any website or documentation on their Launchpad page. @GeorgeEdison congrats, you found a bug.

Any Lubuntu user here?

jrg
raises hand

raises eyebrow

There's a package in lubuntu-desktop called gnome-time-admin. Do I need it it if I want time on my panel?
(installing on a base system)

jrg
10:33 AM
I think so.

Tsk. It's got a dependency on a gnome-system-tools as well. Useless stuff.
@jrg Oh yeah, does it locks screen? What package provides that?

jrg
@Oxwivi xscreensaver.
no shortcut (like gnome's Ctrl-Alt-L) for it though.

Well, I had once removed gnome-screensaver and installed xscreensaver on regular Natty. Didn't lock any screens.

jrg
you have to configure it.

What do I have to do?

jrg
10:39 AM
use the lubuntu defaults. :P

Um, and how do I do that?

jrg
11:07 AM
Install lubuntu-desktop fully?

Dun wanna too much things I'll never use.

12:23 PM
@JorgeCastro updated for gnome3..

@jrg How do I get the Lubuntu session to use Compiz?

jrg
@Oxwivi Alt-F2, compiz --replace
or, if alt-f2 doesn't work, open a terminal, do compiz --replace& and then wait for it to work it's magic.

@jrg That's temporary isn't it? That's why I mentioned session.

jrg
Well, yeah.
you can set it up in lubuntu login settings to do that for you.

@jrg Um, command line method for that?

jrg
12:25 PM
I don't know. Sorry. :(

@jrg Do you know which file has this settings? On GNOME, there's /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/...
Can't find it's equivalent in Lubuntu.
For LXDE.

jrg
Hangon, let me switch to my lubuntu/LXDE session.

@jrg Sorry for the trouble, and thanks.

jrg
It's not trouble, I need to stop what I'm currently doing anyway, I need to start doing real work. :P
and LXDE will make it possible to do that. ;)
UGHHDHFHDSF. KDE IS SO DANG FLASHY!!!! D:

Yeah, I can't handle it either.

jrg
12:31 PM
It's so laggy too. :P
(sorry KDE fans, it's just not my cup of tea)

12:43 PM
@jrg Edited your answer - after it's accepted, maybe you can add oneliner to restore the back ups?

1:03 PM
@jrg Anything turn up regarding the L?

jrg
Looking around for that now.
@Oxwivi Ok, I'll see what I can do about that.

@jrg Thanks!

jrg
1:22 PM
You're welcome. :)

So should I add compiz --replace command to any of those autostart files? :/ I was hoping for a cleaner method.

jrg
that's the only way I know.
assuming LXDE.org is up, I might be able to find something there.

Oh yeah, what happened to it? I found it down yesterday.

jrg
No idea, I'm sending an email to the LXDE list now.

jrg
I think we need to get this on the site so we can update this/find it easily...

Anyone know more about Compiz flags than the manpages?

2:30 PM
@Oxwivi manpages know best :P

Eh, I need to know more details about what it means.
Or is there any Compiz-dedicated IRC?

#compiz @ irc.freenode.net, maybe

Maybe you say.
Will try anyway.
Nope, #compiz is empty as vacuum.

Can you answer this? Will I be able to install Full-Disk Encryption with the Live CD installer? http://askubuntu.com/questions/65541/will-i-be-able-to-install-full-disk-encryption-with-the-live-cd-installer #installation

Oh wait, wrong server. -_-
Hmm, #compiz@freenode has peoples, but they're all dead bodies. :(

3:02 PM
@MarcoCeppi HAHA

@Oxwivi ##Linux @ irc.freenode.net or #ubuntu @ irc.freenode.net ?

@TheEvilOne ?
Some people revived as zombies, so it's okay.
Maybe we can finally say goodbye to the crappy, perpetually beta, Skype client.

@Oxwivi Finally.

I wonder if GNOME dev would bother to take note and develop something for Skype.
Speaking of which, they'd first implement IRC's DCC. I couldn't care less about Skype, IRC and DCC FTW!

Q: Where to find the error messages of Postfix

lovespringI cannot sent mail by using Postfix (SMTP) on Ubuntu Server 11.04. So, there must be some errors, But where to see the error message?

Amber Graner says: "Jorge Castro – Jorge told me once when I was trying to figure what I could and couldn’t do in the community, “Amber, just do shit!” That was probably the most encouraging moment to date."
I would love to star that, sadly it's my own post.

@TheEvilOne Yeah, figured what you meant a bit too late, but got what I wanted anyway. Thanks.

Hello all

Evening @AmithKK

@Oxwivi Evening

'sup?

@Oxwivi It was salvage day and i got electronic stuff from my old analog joysticks

Anything better than a Pentium IV?

4:10 PM
nah

Aw... To hell with salvage days, then. :P

4:39 PM
@StefanoPalazzo: You around?

@GeorgeEdison hi, yeah :)

@GeorgeEdison Hello

kal
Hey guys

@kal Hello

4:40 PM
@StefanoPalazzo: I really need some Python help.

kal
Could someone help me out with fixing my display in Ubuntu 11.10

I'm writing a module that manages an external resource.
...and I need to make sure that resource gets freed.

right
what do you mean by freed?

Someone told me to stay away from __del__.

<extreme_python>

4:41 PM
yeah you better

@StefanoPalazzo Well, there's a call to an external library method Free() that needs to be made.

hang on, I'll show you a nice pattern

(I'm using ctypes.)
is thrilled.

class Resource (object):

    def __enter__(self):
        self.resource = magic()
        return self.resource

    def __exit__(self, type, value, traceback):
        self.resource.free()

with Resource() as r:
    print(r.value)

@StefanoPalazzo google.co.in/…

4:43 PM
makes sense?
thanks amith, that looks interesting

anytime

@StefanoPalazzo Cool! Do I need to do anything special to use the with statement?

you just need a class that implements __enter__ and __exit__
like a wrapper class around the real resource

@StefanoPalazzo can you do that free resource thing in C?

Great, that looks easy enough... last question... what about an entire module?
I have an Init() method called when a module is imported and a Free() method that needs to get called when interaction with the module is complete.

4:46 PM
@GeorgeEdison you could make your whole module act like a class, so that it can have enter and exit methods, but I advise against it

kal
Hey guys, My virtual consoles are messed up in 11.10, they look like this i.imgur.com/99iyu.png. Is there a way i can fix it

it's better to have one big class in your module, like this
from thing.resource import ExternalResource
with ExternalResource("data.txt") as r:
    ...

kal
My virtual Consoles were fine pre-upgrade from 10.04

@GeorgeEdison you mean function, not method, yes?

@StefanoPalazzo Yeah, function.

4:47 PM
(both should have lowecase names by the way)

kal
What do u mean amith

@GeorgeEdison if you have an init() function, you might as well make it a class
classes can also have classes as members of course
3

@kal Was it totally fine in 10.04?

Oh right.

kal
Im 100% sure it was

4:48 PM
Try rebooting into recovery mide

kal
But after the upgrade i had to install gnome-shell and gdm. I believe thats what caused the issue
or maybe i did an update to xdm
Is this some resolution issue that i can fix by changing some configuration file?

</extreme_python>
@kal delete xorg.conf and restart
@StefanoPalazzo you look to me like this:

kal
Ok. let me try that

kal
@AmithKK Should I delete xorg config in recovery or its irrelavant ?

4:51 PM
@kal irrevalent

kal
@AmithKK I dont seem to have an xorg.conf. Shouldnt it be in /etc/X11/?

kal
Hmm, the comments are pretty funny
Btw where do I find xorg.conf?
I feel like i shouldnt have installed xdm

@kal umm.. un-install it?

kal
xdm isnt require am i right?

5:00 PM
I think

kal
I removed xdm still no avail :(. sigh

5:19 PM
explodes
@JorgeCastro what is "slef document" :P

By that I mean it makes me want to cry lakes of burning napalm that I can throw the PHP and Wordpress developers into.

Make a fork of Wordpress and make it use alternatives like Ruby on Rails.

Q: Overlapping text in Software Center

rigved As can be seen from the image, some text gets overlapped in the Description field of the software. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I report a bug against software-center?

Question relevant to 11.10 beta. Close?
@AmithKK and everyone else too: arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/10/…

@Oli can I help throw them in please?

Oli
It's going to take a while to round them up so every extra pair of hands is welcome. We should probably organise some sort of raiding party to start herding up Drupal devs too.

Q: Find what package supplied a tool / application in Ubuntu 11.10

brunopereira81When you type a command in the terminal in Ubuntu that you have not installed but can supplied by a package Ubuntu will suggest the package to be installed. How do I do the other way around? How do I look for what package supplied the command I am typing in a terminal? dpkg -S /usr/bin/termi...

@brunopereira81 I really don't see what you're asking there
since the output is what's intended - the termit package provides /usr/bin/termit

11:21 PM
Anyone have an idea about this: launchpadlibrarian.net/83858021/buildlog.txt.gz
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `distclean'.
What does that mean? ...and why is it suddenly an error when the branch is virtually unchanged since yesterday when it built without error?
Oh no wait... that's getting ignored.

swag finally arrived today

@ajmitch Sweet! The t-shirt looks pretty awesome, huh?

@ajmitch sleepiness is my only excuse for the shame I feel atm! :P

11:38 PM
@GeorgeEdison yeah it looks pretty good
@brunopereira81 heh
that moment when you realise you've asked something blindingly obvious - isn't it brilliant?

Find what package supplied a tool / application in Ubuntu 11.10 http://askubuntu.com/questions/72956/find-what-package-supplied-a-tool-application-in-ubuntu-11-10 #terminal

@ajmitch feeling: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! bash head against wall

English even has a word for that: facepalm :)

yeah but my palm was not big enough for the silliness present on the situation so head bash seems more appropriate :D
