The worst question I've seen in years:

Q: Why is a used laptop I bought banned on a forum while my old laptop is not?

hdawdackI thought that maybe the IP address for this used laptop I bought is banned. However, that can't be, because my other laptop which I am still trying to sell, I registered on that one and it worked fine. Both my old and new laptop show the same public IP address at http://whatismyip.com. What am...

Q: Start Ubuntu Unity With Dash Open

EvanHow do you start ubuntu unity 3D with the dash open? This is so that I can get things done fast. I would like to log in to my desktop with a full-screen dash without having to click the Ubuntu dash button.

Add a startup command to emulate pressing the Super key, maybe?

Dear ubuntu portal, no mention of ruby is troubling. :P

It will remind devs of Apple!

jrg
12:35 PM
?

Oh well, not Ruby specifically, but lots Apple support for Ruby on Rails.

jrg
Whoa, Wunderlist desktop is open source.
I don't understand - Apple ships old, outdated versions of Ruby in Mac OS X. How can that be termed "support"? :)

I'm not saying Apple supports, the project does.

linux ships limited drivers and calls devices supported, so that's fair. :P

Anyway, I'm not quite knowledgeable about stuff like that since I'm no dev, so I'll stop.

12:40 PM
@jrg Not really. I should probably update it.

Adam MonsenFor example, say I wanted to start gnome-terminal with it's northwest corner at 0,0, and make the window 736x434 pixels (apparently the default, which allows for an an 80-character by 24-character terminal window). @RolandTaylor that's the laws of the nature.

@jrg What did you do?

jrg
@Oxwivi I submitted a binary instead of a source package.
Simple stupid n000b mistake. :P

4:24 PM
So much for open-source.

jrg
hehe.
this actually can't be opensourced easily, I've got some proprietary API keys. :P

@jrg Now, now, let's net give them licensing headaches. :P

interesting: the broadcom drivers are leaving the kernel's staging area (BCM4329, BCM4313, BCM43224, BCM43225)

jrg
No, licensing headaches are all on me.

@htorque Yeah, so the BCM4313 driver on the Ubuntu CD was proprietary? :/

4:28 PM
staging (more or less) means "crappy state" :D

You saying that Ubuntu shipped with some drivers from the staging area?

certainly
$ cat /boot/config-3.0.0-12-generic | grep STAGING
CONFIG_STAGING=y

The driver was provided in a separate package.

don't know about that. can only say that the free driver will leave staging in 3.2
though, i don't know if 3.2 is going to be the LTS' kernel of choice.

Neither do I

Q: Command to determine whether Ubuntu is running in a virtual machine?

George EdisonIs there a command or tool that can be used to determine whether Ubuntu is running as a guest within a virtualization program such as VirtualBox or Qemu or whether it is running on the bare metal?

how to quickly switch from unity3d to unity2d in a command using terminal?

@brunopereira81 Don't think you really can.

I know Unity 2D to Unity 3D.
Not the other way round.

@MarcoCeppi @Oxwivi :( thx for the quick replies ;)

6:11 PM
@brunopereira81 Can't help you to go to 2D, but switching to 3D is as easy as unity --replace in either terminal or Alt+F2. I prefer the F2 because there's a lot of output in the terminal and you can't close the terminal without closing Unity.

@Oxwivi nah, i go both ways always, we cant make one other seem more important than the other can we??? :D

@brunopereira81 I don't get it, make what seem more important?

@GeorgeEdison I know its not an application but should be easy to follow: stackoverflow.com/questions/154163/…
@Oxwivi its a joke... but if there was a command it had to work both ways not just for 3d. but thanks for the help

What happened???

jrg
@GeorgeEdison no idea, I must admit it's kinda cool-not-but-is though.

A bug?

@jrg I'd argue that he doesn't really know what the problem is yet, and that the answer to his question might be what goes into a bug report.

It's not using the ubuntu-font family.
