1:15 AM
@ChrisMcFarland just got tallowmere on android
This thing is godlike
Performance perfect and the UI is superb

2:01 AM
Its pretty strange
When I start sometimes start debugging my game starts out with messed up fps
But all I gotta do is refresh and it goes back to normal
wait lol I see what happens
I start my timer before I load my assets and that messes stuff up, just reorganized it and all good :D

2:19 AM
is SO down?
oh snap
first time I ask a question in months and this happens o.O

1 hour later…
3:23 AM
@TheMuffinCoder ah nice. I should probably move the health to the top of the screen instead of the bottom corner, will do it for the sequel

3:57 AM
@Jon Gotta fit a total wtf how? star into every puzzle? :P

5 hours later…
9:25 AM
Hello!

Hey Chris, how are you?

I'm pretty well thanks
Yourself?
Haven't seen you in here in a while

user92578
Hi!

Yeah.. Uni has been keeping me busy. I'm on my summerbreak now so getting back into gamedev :)

Currently refactoring my old game code. It's nice to see that I actually did learn something since then haha
Ihana Tyyppi!

9:28 AM
cool

user92578
@Hjorthenify <3

@Tyyppi_77 I've been stalking your git from time to time, great work! :D

user92578
I know right! :D

user92578
Hoping to launch Greenlight tomorrow

user92578
I just gotta buy a domain and pay the Greenlight fee first

9:31 AM
Damn

user92578
I spent most of last week working on a trailer

Some of the sounds are quieter than the music?
like the bullets seem rather quiet

user92578
I already boosted the sounds up a shit ton

user92578
But I guess I'll boost them up more

9:37 AM
I agree with Chris. I also find the lack of collapsing towers disturbing.. Otherwise it looks amazing :)

user92578
I just really can't do those, mainly because I don't want to but also because that would bring me even closer to Broforce

user92578
That sound was a good catch, I boosted it more on the parts that needed it

user92578
I don't know why but asking my dad to help me buy these things always makes me really nervous

doing things you've never done before can make anyone nervous
part of being human

Q: Which hashing algorithm is best for uniqueness and speed?

EarlzWhich hashing algorithm is best for uniqueness and speed? Example (good) uses include hash dictionaries. I know there are things like SHA-256 and such, but these algorithms are designed to be secure, which usually means they are slower than algorithms that are less unique. I want a hash algorit...

This guy's answer is amazing

10:22 AM
ffs Unity, broke one of my prefabs
luckily I backed up yesterday v_v

Broke?

was in the midst of refactoring, so my code wasn't compiling yet
but I had to close the editor and restart my computer for something else
and on opening the project back up, certain linked components in my big Window prefab were "missing" or "null"
has happened to me once before months ago
and this prefab is super deep with its children, giant hassle to try and fix manually, so I just restored the project and copied over the recent scripts I'd changed :D
bloody annoying though

Pip
morning all

Pip
ahoy Chris
What're you up to this fine morning

10:31 AM
just refactoring a little

Oh damn
Hey Pip

Pip
@Tyyppi_77 nooooooooooo Tyyppi I can't watch the video

what's on your plate this morning?

Pip
First, food

that's a good thing to have on a plate

user92578
10:31 AM
@Pip I know, I deleted it

Pip
Then going to open up my shiny new Unity 5.4 Beta 22 program
and do... something :P
I have a bunch of ideas for a rpg/roguelike
Basically the concept for "skills" is instead of directly assigning values, you have a point pool based on level
and these points assign themselves to attributes based on what you do
For example, if you use a sword a lot you might increase strength and some other sword-related attribute
Sword Proficiency or some whatever
Eventually depending on what you do, there's going to be specializations
So if you have high enough ranks of non-base skills (aka not strength, dexterity, whatever), they can combine into a specialization that gives better bonuses

go fer it

Pip
Idk seems overcomplex and just my thing :D
@Tyyppi_77 want to play a game?

user92578
10:48 AM
can't, food soon

Pip
kk

Q: How to use Irrlicht game engine in cygwin?

EhsanHow can I develop a game with Irrlicht game engine in a cygwin environment? I tried google, but honestly I didn't find any useful tutorials about setting that game engine in cygwin. Thanks, Ehsan.

Pip
12:03 PM
@ChrisMcFarland any tips on how to do modular player skins and animation like you are for T2?

clothing
though I haven't gotten that far lol

Pip
What do you do for the animations?

lots of Transforms, and lots of ping-ponging between states/positions

Pip
Not using Unity's animation system or Spriter or anything?

Pip
12:06 PM
I see
Sounds like a lot of work :P

using other systems sounded like more work

Pip
Fair enough

I do wish I could sort out some sort of dynamic lighting goodness
but my early attempts, couldn't really get anything I was happy with
but oh well

Pip
I've never managed to do very much with lighting
Not the most critical feature in most games, though I'd like to do it this time around

lots of extra work for sure heh

12:13 PM
lighting!
wow @Tyyppi_77 that's a very slick trailer! Good luck with yo!

Pip
Thomas was Alone-style shadows

Thomas Was Alone had horrible awful optimization. I remember that the most about the game.

Pip
Yep, the shadows were done with raycasts
So aka slow as fuck
That forum thread is full of people trying to recreate that without raycasting

watches the game play video to understand the shadow
I think it can be done pretty simple if you just used a shadow map?
make the game actually 3d but render it to look like 2d.

Pip
Not if you're using Unity (Free, at least)

user92578
12:26 PM
@BlueBug how did you see it?

I made a simple instant intuitive tutorial
I think unity kinda sucks if u r using free.

user92578
yes but I deleted it

I watched it as soon as u posted it
then responded a lot later.
I think it is better if u switch order of things in the trailer btw, it goes like, shoot guns to kill enemy -> other cool things in the game, but maybe reconsider order to "cool things in the game first" then "shoot and kill"

Pip
or shoot -> cool shit -> more shooting

something like that yeah

user92578
12:36 PM
I won't be redoing it

Pip
Fair enough
@ChrisMcFarland does Unity have a MonoBehavior call graph somewhere?

a who to the what now
what sort of thing is that

Pip
Like a graph where it shows where it calls Start/Awake/Update
and whatever else

Ohh, yeah lemme find

Pip
thanks

12:37 PM
there's an official page somewhere, I have this image bookmarked though

Pip
thanks

Q: Calculate the displacement of device in unity

Yazan W YusufI'm making a 3D game in unity where the object should move forward and backward as the android device moves/accelerates in the Z axes. ie. When the player moves the devise in the direction of the +ve Z axis, the object should move forward, and when the player moves the devise in the direction of ...

Pip
Is Awake only ever called once or is Start the only function like that?

Awake and Start are once-ever only

Pip
thanks

12:41 PM
OnEnable is called any time the gameObject becomes active I believe
lately I use Awake exclusively to set my singletons/globals
so that Start knows that everything is ready

Pip
Got it
That's not a bad idea

Jon
I use awake to get shit ready and start to get shit started

trying out some BigRoomText

Pip
That looks awesome

user92578
yeah looks really nice

12:49 PM
is that Tellowmere 2?

Jon
Close

user92578
@Jon ?

Jon
What kind of question is that

user92578
You just created a room for us

Jon
12:54 PM
Accident

Pip
Boom, progress!
not "boom progress" though explosions should be a thing
No game is complete without explosions of some kind
Especially if the things exploding are cats (heh @ChrisMcFarland)

while that shadow/masking is "realistic" in a sense
I find it's really hard on my eyes when trying to play a game with it :s
jarring having stuff pop in and out

Yeah I see it as a building block, not really a graphics technique
But I wanted to share it with BlueBug since he was thinking about it, it's a very fresh spin on the topic compared to shadow mapping
It's more like stencil shadow volumes

1:13 PM
I think we discussed this before Deja Vu!

Jon
@MickLH yep 80 stars to go

or, I am 99% sure that redblobgames.com/articles/visibility link had been posted here before

It had at some point
It's interesting to think of the technique in 3D, I think DOOM 3 did that for shadows to get perfect edges with no pixelation
But of course perfect polygon edges casting big shadows means huge geometric shadows across your scene

I think this solution can be heavy if there were lots of objects
but not brutal forcing by throwing ray all over or using gpu is impressive.

Jon
1:20 PM
brutal forcing :D

It does have performance problems for dynamic scenes
Every time a polygon changes, the shadow mesh must be updated
You can create the shadow volume in a shader, but it's not a magic bullet

I think this approach is relatively intensive to implement due to the fact that you will now need to write code to check each wall, object, (things that are related to the model), which will require you to make almost fundamental changes to your code.

I haven't tried fitting it into an existing piece of code lol, that sounds like a pain
I think it's only reasonable in 2D
It's technically possible in 3D, but actually useful in 2D

Yes. I can't think of doing it in 3D. Sounds like a nightmare. but 2D sounds reasonable, especially for games like ThomasWasAlone
why do that? when shadowing in 3D only takes...

Ah yes, the classical technique of "just doing it"

Jon
1:28 PM

Bluebug is a lazy mofo. He has no patient for practice and want fast instant results. No time for such a performance enhancing technique.

I found a really, really bad bug in my code but it was easy to fix
I forgot to actually hash the data, before signing the hash

it is gone deep into the maze of memory. Save the poor data from eternal torment of memory hell.

Pip
@MickLH sounds important

everything appeared to work, and it even pretended that the signature check works, swap the user ID and the packet gets rejected
but that was because it checked if the user signed off on the all-zero message
every packet from the same user had the same signature lol
I hex edited a message and injected it, and it worked! (And I was like god damnit.)

1:32 PM
tear it up mick

Hi

HI

Pip
Holy crap
Anyone here played MapleSory?

like 20 years ago
yes

Pip
Nexon is making (made?) a 3D sequel

1:34 PM
made

the shit is a giant rolling pile of failure.

lol
It's a rare treat when @BlueBug molly whops some developer :P

Pip
I... actually think it could potentially possibly be a little better than the first one, maybe

I had a high expectation for the game. They crushed my anticipation and burned it into ashes then fed it to the pigs then made bacon out of those pigs.

hmm bacon of pigs fed exclusively the ashes of anticipation sounds kindof fancy or elegant or something

sounds dead

How do I put this... Yes... it is just like how Diablo 3 totally ruined its series. But only worse since it was supposed to be THE REBOOT of MapleStory. At least Diablo 3 is somewhat fun on its own.

Their trailer turned me off, honestly
It said, "Come run aimlessly in a pointless world with cheesy animations!"

I'd give it a whirl if it existed
I like cute things :(

1:39 PM
@ChrisMcFarland My god. At least you're frowning about it.

it's a break from the norm
like that upcoming final fantasy chibi thing? I might be keen

When they were supposed to be fixing bugs and add further features they focused on customizing your "house" and other meaningless cosmic things. Slowly turning it into some sort of blocky sim simulator. The original MapleStory players who were addicted to level up/power grinding couldn't stay with all that "make your house pretty" thing they were throwing into face.

Any suggestions why, when I am trying to print levelFile[0][0] it shows 6 instead of one.My levelFile (.txt file from which I read) content is:
0,1,2
3,4,5
6,7,8
It is weird

@BlueBug sounds like a wannabe Animal Crossing

A ha! Now I see where all these changes come from!
They are focusing on original MapleStory ceaselessly though. Keep adding contents and new classes with new areas to explore.
MapleStory is like WOW in Korea.

1:46 PM
lol everyone in my town plays it still
tho everyone here is korean :P

I used to have level 36 Wizard, at the time of play the max level was 60

I've tried MapleStory but it seemed boring

i played Maple Story a while
it's OK, not great though
painful Korean grind though

It kills your time mindlessly.

almost mindlessly... the upgrade decisions are pretty important since you make them so seldom and you can make bad ones. But other than that... yeah :)

1:50 PM
@sn0k3 This is genuinely another reason why people talk shit about Java.
You can't share a snippet of code and test it on the other side. I would have to read a few manual pages just to run your trivial snippet.
Nobody is going to put up with that level of bullshit over such a trivial issue

Korean kids are very busy studying. I think its simple structure combined with progressive incremental rewarding system made it so easy to be consumed by busy kids; you can play it quick whenever you have time and each time you gain greater sense of accomplishment that you cannot feel normally in life.

yeah, that's the beauty of MMOs if you're in that mindset
achieve all this stuff and level-up and feel powerful and mighty, long time playing
when really you're just sitting in front of your computer on your ass for years

lol

@BlueBug Diablo III was really, really good.

but at least your brain's stimulated

1:52 PM
Diablo II was unplayable to me after just a couple weeks with D3

ooo there it is. there's the benchmark

Diablo III is fun. I agree on that but hm.... I feel like it lost its supposed place to other action rpg such as Path of Exile by not taking the position it could have taken.

A sequel is good if you play it for a while, and prefer it over the original

ouff

while 3D is cool usually
there is something about D2's pixel isometric artwork that helps add value to the experience

1:54 PM
Here's one... I'm in a situation in D2. I think "I could use X spell here. But it's not on my hot keys. Do I feel like opening up the spell menu to get it? I might flub it and die" I only play hardore. so death is permanent.

@Almo F keys

yes there are not enough Fkeys

that was the solution lol
yeah

speaking in terms of innovation, d3 gave nothing

it fixed all sorts of shit

1:55 PM
I can't play hardcore anymore cuz getting one-shotted from stupid shit is annoying
and grinding pve is boring

it was just (after several patches) something that as you said fixed lots of shit

but in terms of feeling
meant nothing

potion belt... red pots take time, blue pots take time, ytou have to combine reds and blues with gems in the cube to make purples which are instant, 4 slots, each with a stack of 4, have to keep track of what's in the slots and what order or you might die

I am happy with D3 but not happy when to think about D2. Because what I wanted was a successor of the legend of D2-the game that got played years and years after.

1:55 PM
horrible

D3, the fucking blood splats fade away
do you know how insulting that feels?

it required you some preparation in temrs of experience and in terms of time to be able to face many things

compared to D2?

The stamina bar is gone. What was the stamina bar for?
just to annoy you every 10 seconds.

@Almo it was for destroying your fun

1:57 PM
oh yeah

oh yeah.. stamina is hmm... kinda agree...

d3 is best suited for nowadays payer, I agree. but that's not a real compliment

I went back to play D2, which I loved at the time. I lost probably 50 characters thast were level 50 and abov4e.
I played that shitloads
and within a very small amount of time with D3, I could not go back to it. I tried. It just annoyed me at every turn.

user92578
@sn0k3 your general algorithm is flawed

and the Jungle. holy shit. Every time I complete a mission in D2, I'm like, "great, one step closer to Duriel and the fucking jungle."
And I think it's well-known that I don't prefer playing easy games. :)
