2:21 PM
oh Smite just hit OSX

user92578
WTF

user92578
YouTube has apparently decided that my level creation timelapse is a video of Terraria

Jon
Hahahaha

stop stealing assets D:

Jon
Copyright removed?

user92578
Does that show Terraria in the description for you?

no

user92578

Jon
yeah
lol
can you edit that?

not for me lol

user92578
2:27 PM
@Jon it says I can

user92578
and the settings for me show "GunHero"

user92578
but the page still shows terraria

why don't i see this
damn you youtube

Jon
Gunhero - Noun - Forum troll from a notorious game website who so defined stupidity that his name is now used to insult other forum members.

user92578
Damn this is annoying

user92578
2:30 PM
It's fine on the other video

Pip
@Tyyppi_77 yes

user92578
this is ridiculous

user92578
WTF

Pip
That's youtube for you

user92578
fuck this, the video is now science & technology

user92578
2:39 PM
apparently youtube is trying to be smart and is somehow automatically getting "terraria" from "gunhero level creation timelapse"

user92578
and if I try to set the game manually to a non-existent game (according to YTs database), it doesn't do anything

Can't you create a game?

2:53 PM
I BUILT MY PC!!!! :D

what graphics card?

Pip
That is quite a lot of RAM Muffin

Nice product id

ahahah
now I'm selling pirate copies :)

Now you can join Alestorm

3:08 PM
it's hard work how to structure bosses

Jon
Needs more ram

@Pip 32 GB seems what he should have to me

i only have 12, but I bought it two years ago now I think

110 days, nice
I just have 73

3:23 PM
well
look at the ram

Pip
I have 12 in my laptop and 6 in my desktop :P

a friend of mine is paying so I don't mind

Pip
I really need to upgrade
Also, why is this not working :/
It builds perfectly fine with my laptop and not on my desktop for whatever reason
Error	LNK1112	module machine type 'x64' conflicts with target machine type 'X86'	Runaway	W:\Runaway\build\Runaway\Runaway.dir\Debug\main.obj	1

I have like 8gigs

Pip
Internet has yielded zero results that worked

3:25 PM
you are mixing x32 and x64 objects
i.e. some library is for x32 and your exe for x64
or the other way around

Pip
I would think it would be consistant between my laptop and desktop though
I'm booting the laptop up right now, we'll see if I can find the issue
both are running x64 Windows 10

well
this doesn't necessarily mean that you build a x64 exe

Pip
That's true, but I should be

looks like you're trying to build a x32 executable but your main.obj was compiled in x64

Pip
hmm

3:27 PM
just do a clean and then a build

Pip
okay
Nope

or look in the top menu, where you switch between release and debug

Pip
Yep, that's set to x64 as well

weird

Pip
My CMake command is: cmake -G "Visual Studio 14 2015 Win64" ..
which.... should be fine
The only difference I can find is in a slightly different VS version
But that shouldn't matter for this

Jon
3:33 PM
i have 16GB in this one
and I haven't gotten to 100% usage yet

check the linker settings
if /MACHINE:X64 is set

Jon
that is actually a lie
I wrote some shit that used up all my ram

Pip
I'll look
And then if I click it it changes to x86
uuuuuh
If I manually set it, the error still happens
uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh
<Link>
  <AdditionalOptions> /machine:X86 %(AdditionalOptions)</AdditionalOptions>
@tkausl Any ideas how to fix this?

uhm
just remove that /machine:X86

Pip
Well yeah

3:45 PM
why is this even there?

Pip
I don't know
And then I would have to do this every time I regenerated from cmake
And cmake is even set to generate 64 bit projects
I'm going to see what downgrading cmake does
And that's under the ItemDefinitionGroup Condition="'$(Configuration)|$(Platform)'=='Debug|x64'"> section
what
that's actually under every section
uuuuuh
would 32 bit cmake matter?

no
shouldn't

Pip
Hm
Removing all of those /machine flags fixes it
But that's really freaking annoying
Is it because I link to OpenGL? (opengl32.dll)

I don't think so
windows is weird
there is no opengl64.dll
there is a opengl32.dll for 64 bit
and guess where the 64-bit dlls are
in Windows\System32

Pip
4:04 PM
pfft
at least they're not in SysWOW64
I have no idea what that's for either

thats where the 32-bit dlls are

Pip
uuuuuh
I'm not even going to ask

Jon
4:26 PM
frig man.. replayed level 2 of doom to try to get secrets
got 1 of 8
wtf

hgahah
SECRET secrets

Jon
4:42 PM
Next time I'm using a guide lol
I looked everywhere ffs

I hunted forever for secrets in twisted metal black
found a good bucnh of them...
but DAMN they were well-hidden

Sie
What is the advantage of using serializefield over public in Unity?
The only thing I can think of is letting you edit it in the inspector but not letting other classes have access to it. Is there anything else?

Jon
5:00 PM
No that is what it is for, to expose a variable to the inspector

5:25 PM
@Sie better code structure
we had someone using a public from outside a compnent at work... i changed its name and BAM code borke
not happen with serialize private field

Sie
Ah.

DoorhandleI deleted my question and it said that the post is deleted, but it worked when I refreshed the page.

3 hours later…
Sie
8:59 PM
Chat has been dead today.

... What kind of communication works by placing files in an FTP directory ... who even comes up with that.
Also, chat is always dead in the weekends :)

Sie
It's less active but there are usually a few people here.

And we all hate eachother.

Sie
Ya. The older guys (30+) seem a lot more lax though.

9:15 PM
necromancy is about
implementing achievements atm, shoot me now

Fun stuff :P

yeah
I'd much rather be doing something fun
but this stuff isn't going to implement itself :(

Sie
^ Welcome to my world.
I'm busy making a restart system/level manager. I'm so bored.
Maybe you can throw in some easter eggs or something.

Progress is progress

I'm looking through several hundreds of pages of documentation, trying to figure out this arcane way of doing things. :P

Sie
9:19 PM
@WilliamMariager What are you working on?

Trying to figure out how I sync information with the GS1 database. It's a consumer thing, that holds information products all over the world.

So far, I've learned a lot about their XML specifications. But I'm still none the wiser on how to actually send this information to them. The closest I've found is that I need to provide an FTP server they'll monitor. But that seems a bit ... peculiar to say the least.

Sie
This is probably a long shot but if anyone knows where I can find some kind of documentation or API reference for the RenderWare engine let me know.

Sie
9:22 PM
lol How did you find that? Last night I was looking for it but couldn't find it anywhere. Well that should work but it is a bit dated.

Second result on Google "RenderWare api" :P
It's also referenced on the RenderWare Wiki article

Sie
Looks like that's the best I'm going to get.
Pretty sure that website hasn't been updated since around the time I was still in diapers.

Hehe
Likely :P

9:39 PM
Renderware in the hands of criterion was very capable
Burnout 2 ran at 60 FPS, while streaming level data AND reading/writing to/from memory card o_0
I still have no fucking clue how they managed that.

Sie
@Almo So what are some skills I need to give myself a running start for a game design position? I remember last night you told me availability varies a lot between companies.

I would say: design some games. show you can do the work.

Sie
That's what I've been working towards. I think that if I can show that my concepts work well in motion that will give me an advantage.

Jon
10:04 PM
advantage, pie

Sie
> pie
?

Jon

10:18 PM
Visual Studio is great
> Simplify App to Application
Great simplification :P

Jon
at least its something

10:38 PM
Maybe it's semantically a simplification, not syntactically. For example, App can mean different things today, it can mean the somewhat specific software that is run on mobile platforms, it can mean any executable file type in general or it can even mean something totally different, e.g. an appetizer before a meal. Application, however, although it's longer, .... wait, forget that. Application is semantically much more ambigious than App
ffs
So I don't get this, too @WilliamMariager

Does someone actually use Boost.Serialization? I'm close to just code that myself

Jon
i sometimes do when I am shitting

That was helpful, thanks :)

Jon
10:48 PM
you asked

and got a helpful answer

@NaCl I looked into it myself too a couple of days ago..! I still don't have a conclusion :P

@AlexandreVaillancourt Documentation is as bad as in any other Boost library besides Boost.Filesystem
Also, I don't like it's pattern

You find it too intrusive?

Jon
my gf does

10:59 PM
Not sure what your gf finds too intrusive when you're shitting. And I don't want to know.

@AlexandreVaillancourt No, as you can provide an external - "global" - load function inside the boost serialization namespace
I just dislike how it handles different versions

Ah, kk, I haven't got there in the doc yet, apparently.

Ah :P
I'd prefer to register Loaders/Savers for different file-versions, giving my serialization functions a simple version id will likely end up in some nice spaghetti code

Sie
Damn it. Can't find that dodgy copy of RenderWare again. Wonder where the hell it went.

But maybe I'm just doing something wrong or I misunderstand it's concept(s)

11:03 PM
Yeah, some libraries take a while to master

Sie
Looks like ps2sdk is going to be my best bet.

Jon
do it
because everyone has a ps2 now
totally worth it

Sie
Oh come on. You guys have never done anything just for the hell of it?

sure, when I was in my teens and didn't need to worry about making money :P

@Sie I have not done programming "for the hell of it" in a very, very long time
maybe 10 or so of the euler project puzzles

11:06 PM
oh gawd, it's what I do all day

The deal is... I don't really like programming

I learned it so i could design and make games, which is what I really like

just happens to be an "easy" way to get into the games industry, but then you find out desingers aren't paid well and you kind of get stuck programming

Sie
11:08 PM
It seems like a lot of people choose different career paths and then just do gamedev as a hobby.

Jon
hobby shmobby
thats what i do

Sie
Honestly. I have no idea what the fuck I want to do in life. I like making video games but I hate programming boring applications.

I want to do some research

Make video games then
I thought I wanted to do web development
after getting a degree and doing web development in the real world, decided nope lol

:D

Jon
11:10 PM
web dev gets boring after 10 years

@ChrisMcFarland For a friend of mine it was the opposite :D

Jon
i want to kill myself

That's the thing, everyone's different
Each to their own

Jon
i figure I have another 10 years in me

Sie
@ChrisMcFarland Well currently I am working towards an engineering major and on the side doing gamedev.

11:11 PM
Go for it
If you've got a drive, follow it

Jon
if you are an idiot, be happy
embrace ignorance

If you're not, be a pig called Socrates

Sie
if you are smarter than the rest of the world, be a nihilist

Jon
socrates was a piece of shit

okay

Sie
11:15 PM
Welp/
Back to trying to drain the ocean through a straw.

this console stuff
super frustrating
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sie
Think I might join a gym. Anyone here go to Planet Fitness? It looks pretty good and priced well enough.

@Sie bro do u even lift tho
@ChrisMcFarland Good luck, and may the force be with you

You don't need a gym unless you want to be Schwarzenegger

Sie
@MickLH Ya. I moved a laser printer and nearly broke my foot.

11:19 PM
You can use the weight of your body

@MickLH ahh thank you. gonna need more than the force though ,_,

@Sie Ya? Well I lifted a finger and almost died of work overdose poisoning

Sie
You poor soul.

I ran 11kms today lmao

Pip
Uuuuuh I'm frustrated with people right now

11:21 PM
@ChrisMcFarland Well then, may the In-Circuit-Debugger be with you ;)

Sie
@NaCl What is that in 'Murican?

Pip
Solo queue Dota is hard to deal with sometimes :/

Sie
@Pip We'll probably just make it worse fyi.

6.835 miles lol

Pip
Lol no even Mick in a bad mood is better than what I just was dealing with
3

11:21 PM
@Sie Pepsi drinkin muthafucka! Daarkness!

Sie

Sie
Is it legal to marry a url in the US?
I want to marry "https://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/19/game-development".

Pip
Lol

@Sie Maybe in Japan

11:31 PM

Q: Could we merge tags 'navigation-mesh' and 'navmesh'?

Alexandre VaillancourtThe title says it all. These two are describing the exact same thing, so I suggest we only keep one.

I see someone has discovered /r/birdswitharms

Actually, I did that by myself

Nice, you should post it

I'm not into reddit, feel free to copy :P
The arms are from Patrik Baboumian

11:45 PM
Anyone know if the xsd.exe tool from Visual Studio is used as part of the IDE or purely a commandline tool?
Using it manually is turning out to be a big mess. I was hoping I could just stuff these xsd files into Visual Studio some way and get classes in return.

Pip
I don't know, sorry
@tkausl btw, I got fed up with stripping those /MACHINE directives so... I just hacked around them
@echo off
IF EXIST .\build\NUL GOTO DIR_PRESENT
MKDIR build
:DIR_PRESENT
cd build && cmake -G "Visual Studio 14 2015 Win64" ..
cd Runaway
type Runaway.vcxproj | findstr /v machine:X86 > Runaway.vcxproj.tmp
del Runaway.vcxproj && move Runaway.vcxproj.tmp Runaway.vcxproj
cd ..
There's now a workaround in my setup script :P
So now I make the build directory if it's not there, cd into it and gen the cmake files
then pipe all lines that don't have "machine:X86" in them into a temp file, delete the original, then move the temp file over
It works even though it's not pretty or nice

I see a @JohnMcDonald. What are you up to? :D

heh, hey

Jon
holy crap
its JM

Pip
In fact it is :P

11:51 PM
Well... not a lot right now. Trying to work on my resume, :(

Jon
shut up pip, let JM talk

Pip
lol

Pip
What've you been up to?

Jon
you lost a job?

11:52 PM
:( yeah... The situation in Calgary is pretty dire

Jon
sorry to hear that

Yeah, that sucks. :/

Jon
we are currently hiring
programmers
fed gov work, if you are interesting in appying
eh, looks like the job posting was taken down, so too late sorry

Was it in Calgary?

Jon
11:54 PM
it was across canada yeah

Jon
it was open like last week..must have just closed
started at 80k

Jon
:(

yeah, so we'll see what happens. It's probably going to end up being a good thing in the end

Jon
11:56 PM
a lot of jobs are dying out
programmers however, are in high demand
I have no doubt you will be fine
