00:00 - 18:0018:00 - 00:00

6:03 PM
So I've been invited to talk at CppCon, I just need to think of a topic now aha

"CPP why the +'s"

ahahaha

"Atwoods Law, C++, can we make it in Javascript?"

xD keep em coming

Man, I'd had more but my lab request finally got answered lol.

6:06 PM
@Almo Had the first class Imperative Programming today. They told us to use scanf if we ever need to read input. :P

In C or C++?

C

Ah fair enough :P
If it'd been C++ I would have told you to burn them.

I remember Almo hating scanf so I figured I'd tag him

clearly you should roll your own scanf

Jon
6:11 PM
i'm gonna write a Assembly emulator in javascript

as in asm.js ?

that might be completely wrong, I'd just heard of it and have no idea what it is

Jon
Why would anyone do this, lol

"Atwoods Law, C++, can we make it in Javascript?"
Atwoods law apparently

Jon
6:12 PM
yeah, alright, haircut time... woopty woo

@Lokkij ARGH SCANF
first thing I did after learning scanf was to write a wrapper for it called Input that acted like INPUT in C64 basic.

How is 1 < i < 10 different from i > 1 && i < 10?
Man I really dislike one-line ternary statements

6:31 PM
Sweet! Tile picking finally working
(My third question on the site :o)

wouldn't you get (1 < i) < 10?
so if i = 5, you're evaluating (true) < 10?

Ooh right
That's pretty silly
Thanks!

:)

JS13k progress! Rendering, first 2 tiles procedurally generated, tile picking and the background effect clocking in under 6k zipped
(From a total of 55k)

Windows 10 just crashed as a removed a USB. GG win10
4

Fancy
I've not had that happen in ages

7:12 PM
Some threading issue -.-
Didn't even save my work

That sucks =[

Oh well :/
aaaaand corrupted my program

you made crayons?

Sorta
They're procedurally generated
OOH I just figured out how to make them better
(Besides adding noise, I was already working on that)

7:28 PM
.

Image not found
Probably referrer protection

hot link issue
will fix

@Lokkij unless you're in Python :D

ok you got it

7:29 PM
(Upload -> From web :) )

oooh right
thanks

7:39 PM
There, slightly less crayon

Jon
lightbulbs

Yes, but on the other hand those 6 bulbs are a total of 217 bytes

In code form?

Jon
cool

@Hjorthenify Compressed, but yes, made from code :)

Jon
7:45 PM

I should probably add some facial features actually
Hmm

@KevinvanderVelden So you're saving how much by generating it?

@Hjorthenify well, I'd have to throw some better compression on it, but plain old PNG that image is 32.9 kilobytes

Ahh very cool!

I'm now typing from Ubuntu! :D

7:50 PM
Gimme 2 min and I'll be too :)

First time I've actually used Linux

You're in for a treat

Now with added faces!

8:10 PM
Compression is weird. I figured I'd help by adding "abs = Math.abs;" and using abs in the rest of my code. But I noticed that when I did that for a few other Math.* functions it increased the size of the compressed file
So I removed those statements, removing one "abs = Math.abs", but adding 4 "Math." statements. The compressed zip shrunk by 4 bytes

@Lokkij if you're doing C or C++ dev, it's lovely
clang <3

(You may be able to tell that I'm going somewhat overboard with watching compression and what not, but eh that's what I do. I go overboard)
(Also I have a makefile that outputs a lovely bunch of information every 2 seconds so it's not like it takes time)

We're using gcc in college

not too shocking
@Lokkij HotS?

Still setting up Ubuntu
So, no

8:18 PM
no worries

@KevinvanderVelden :D
See linux is bad if you can't play HotS because you're still setting it up. ;)
git argh
don't like
took two guys a bunch of cmd line stuff to figure out where my commit went that they helped me make

I like git, but it's not like I've ever used anything different

HotS doesn't run on Linux, well not without Wine anyway and even then you've got to have some luck
I've used TFS, SVN and git (think that's all of them)
git is my favourite so far :D

SVN is a nightmare

I've used Perforce, Kiln, now a teeny bit of Git and SVN.
I liked: P4 > SVN > Git == Kiln
Oh, and AlienBrain so long ago, I don't even remember it
And a little visual source safe which sucked amazingly

8:29 PM
Oh yeah I've used Perforce too
what's Kiln like?

It's related to mercurial somehow
Found it horrible and confusing

Anyone worked with Text Mesh in Unity?

I have a bit
I'll help if i can

Its blurry for me
Character size is set to 70 and scale to 0.01
Because that's what the interwebz said
Unless I misunderstood something

Jon
you need to change the imported font size

8:32 PM
JON TO THE RESQ

So I need to download a font?

Jon
click on the font itself, and in the inspector change the size
no, you import the font into unity
it defaults to arial.. I think that one is built in

Where is the default font located?

Jon
Anyways, unity converts the font to a bitmap
you set the size there

Jon
8:33 PM
the bigger you set it, the larger the file, but the better the quality

But where do I find the font file?

Jon
just import one
I don't know where th4e default one is
but yeah, that is a pretty common issue -- more than likely you are just super zoomed in your scene
zoomed out i mean
your gameobjects are probably huge

Woooh! Nailed it, thanks jon :)

Jon
you may also notice a bug with the text mesh not drawing properly
you will need to programatically set the sortingOrder property
or set the rest of your scene to negative values
Or extend the editor to let you modify the sorting order

#Unity

Jon
8:38 PM
I have no idea why the sorting order is not exposed
and it has been like that for a long time now

Yeah me neither. What do you mean my gameobjects are huge? Everything is on default settings

Jon
the width/height of your gameobjects in unity units
unity by default treats 1 pixel == 0.01 units

Ah yes

Jon
so consider if you have a 10x10 gameobject, unity thinks that is 1000x1000 pixels

I've never thought of that..

Jon
8:40 PM
Feeling sick, bbl

When writing my pathfinder i made 1 pixel 1 unit to make creation of grids easy

"Before moving on to more specialized tools, let’s talk about reset and checkout. These commands are two of the most confusing parts of Git when you first encounter them. They do so many things, that it seems hopeless to actually understand them and employ them properly."

8:58 PM
latest humble bundle is good
tom clancy bundle

1 hour later…
Pip
10:20 PM
@Hjorthenify @TheMuffinCoder So I got my class schedule today. Looks pretty good... only one bad teacher out of them all.
@Almo :D

10:34 PM
@OMGtechy Looks like it all requires Uplay. giant nope

Pip
10:44 PM
Also... all of my hair on one arm is pretty short now
Just burned off most of it
I was lighting a grill... Apparently someone left a burner on so there was a ton of propane already... big explosion
I have no idea how just one arm got singed
No burns at all, just the hair
Smelled aweful

dang :(
RIP arm hair

Pip
11:42 PM
yeah
Not a huge loss.. it'll grow back eventually. I hope
