Jon
5:26 PM
man, Microsoft support is horrible
well, sorry... sometimes Microsoft support is horrible
That last person I got was a piece of shit that knew nothing.
And I had to put in a lot of effort to understand what she was saying
The she wanted to remote to my pc... hahahahahaha
Then she gives up and says "You need to contact the manufacturer of your pc" and I'm like -- I built this PC bitch.
lol

@Jon مخم

Jon
I was overly kind actually
just incredibly annoyed inside

5:42 PM
@Jon that was supposed to be lol...
if I had noticed my keyboard layout was not english :P

6:11 PM
@Jon ok I have my manufacturer right here ... what should I ask them?
@Jon developer support is pretty good ... what was the problem?

6:38 PM
@Ali.S According to google it is used to emphasize how bad something is :P I guess it wasn't completely out of place. :P

Jon
I had the wrong version of windows installed, so it wouldn't reactivate

@William'MindWorX'Mariager I guess so :P
it can be literally translated to "my mind", or "my head"
or even better "my brain"

I just found this: www.almaany.com/en/dict/ar-en/مخم/
Hah, the URL parser doesn't like your language Ali :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager the thing is, that's not the language I speak :P
url says ar-en

6:53 PM
That just complicates everything. :P

but I speak persian (fa)

Q: The LoL number game

GOTO 0Tim and Tom are fictional characters (cats, I believe) who like to play the LoL number game. In this game, Tim chooses two distinct integers A and B, both ≥ 2, and shows them to Tom. Tom's goal is to find a succession of translolmations that can be applied to A in order to obtain B. There are on...

WTF? puzzling.stackexchange.com is blocked by the company...might be the only one.
Hm; gaming is blocked, too...ah, well

heh

@TreDubZedd wanna use some proxies?

7:00 PM
normally I'd say "sure", but in this case it's probably a good thing--I've got work I need to get done :)

:D

@TreDubZedd Is GameDev blocked?

@Jon you all sorted now mate?

no
strangely enough
I'm not sure how a proxy would play with my VPN connection to my other office, anyway...
...sounds (almost) like more trouble than it's (probably) worth

7:34 PM
proxy would just make it look like something external was trying to make a VPN connection. whether that gets denied or not depends on that other office.
it would work unless whoever is in control of such things didn't want it to

Jon
@Wardy yah man all set

In my old office, I could just change the URL to httpS and get through most blocked content.

oh hey john!
not seen you in a while

yeah, hey. I've been away for a while

7:40 PM
:)

How you doing?
Any new games on the move?

LiveScript has backcalls, but I don't get them at all. What do they do and how do I use them?

@JohnMcDonald ok
still working on the number game
score system in place on dev server
will put in client interfacing next weekend
then voluntary video ads to add a number to your submission
then some security issues

mm, security eh?

little things
I have an autogenerated key (32 char) for the auto-generated accounts
if you register, you get a password so you can log in from other devices
password is hashed on the server.
but it's stored locally in plaintext.
will fix that
so you'll use the password at login to get the autokey, and it will store THAT
so if someone gets your phone and looks at your LowDown save, they don't get any info about the kinds of passwords you use.
much smarter

7:53 PM
right

so the main features left are display of scores/leaderboards and the video ads
the other stuff is just little bits like that
Displaying contest end deadlines in local instead of server time is an important one :)
then when that's "done" and worldwide, up next is my puzzle game proto that's been laying around for 3 years now
glad that phase of changing jobs once a year is over, and I'm now able to work on my projects again.

@Lokkij looks like a backcall just translates into a js function wrapped in...whatever you tell it to
params <- beforeFunction _ afterFunction
inside function
as for why they're useful...not sure yet

That's.. weird.
Thanks though, I think I understand it now.

maybe this will help understand why it's useful: exponential.io/blog/unnest-callbacks

Oooh
Okay
I really get it now
Thanks!

8:03 PM
glad you do, 'cuz I don't. XD
javascript isn't my thing, lol

It's not my thing either, but I've been experimenting a bit with LiveScript and D3.js.
LiveScript may just mostly be JS, but the syntax is so much nicer.

@Jon see ... wasn't too bad was it ?

Jon
well, no idea what is up with Chrome
i open a tab, and it takes about 15 seconds to start loading a page
so bye - firefox it is.
everytime I try Chrome it seems to give me bullshit problems like this

that is wierd
I get similar from firefox
so i use chrome
lol

Jon
Yeah, I tried for about 25 minutes
re-installed, removed all plugins, extensions, reset everything
Chrome just thrashes my disk everytime I open a tab
I removed every single setting too
My guess is Chrome is a racist.

8:09 PM
that's one of the stranger bugs I've heard of recently

Jon
others reportr the same online .. but it ranges since 2014 to now

Jon
it worked fine for a little bit too
Its like it tries to rebuild everything from a cached copy or something
and scans my entire hard drive for it each time
whatever, i have other things to take care of... there are plenty of browsers out there :)

lol all this work ive been doing with procedural worlds ... I just figured out how I could make my game without it :)

Jon
wooden guns?

8:20 PM
lol

8:35 PM
Fun fact. Right now google voice isn't working in chrome but it works fine for IE :D

hahah

For me anyway

wish people in open plan offices would not single-clap during their conversations.
it's fucking rude.
check it:

I think the concept of open plan offices is inherently rude

13/1/15 with leona
Treeline

8:37 PM
nice

team got 30 kills.
THEY LEFT ME OUT OF TWO KILLS DAMMIT
some people agree with you about open plan offices
I can't say I've ever really liked it
I don't necessarily want to be alone, but being with no more than one or two other people in an office is better in my opinion.
great name

Jon
open plan offices are horrible, and they are only getting worse

@Almo well yeah, every research on it ever agrees that they are horrible

Jon
It is ridiculous for people such as myself, who require focus -- having people talking in your face all day long over their phone

so... why are they so persistently popular in tech?

Jon
8:40 PM
literally sitting next to you, talking all day long

:(

Jon
because their job seems to be all about talking

Sure, they're cheaper for the same amount of employees. But then, if you want to do cost saving measures like that: Just fire a quarter of the people. Also cheaper! Probably gets more work done than an open office plan.
@Almo because it's cheaper. If you don't count efficiency of people working in it

Jon
seriously.. i often times just stop working and leave for a while because i'm so annoyed

Pip
@Almo aww

8:41 PM
hahahah (just fire 1/4 people)
we have some offices here, but even Tech Directors don't get them

@Almo yep, if you want to save money and get work done? Firing a bunch of people is better than open plan offices

heheh :)

Jon
we have offices here, the people that make the decisions to lower the walls in the open office all have offices

Pip
wow

Jon
right now we have 6 foot walls... they are apparently going to change them to 3 footers
because its the new way
no reason.. its just the new office 2.0 they call it

8:45 PM
:(

Jon
and it is costing a fortune to convert
lol... idiotic.
it might make sense, in certain areas, such as produtcion support teams
but it sure as hell doesn't make sense to introduce as much distraction to my job as possible
i already voiced my opinion, and I even told my manager that I would bring in cardboard, and finish my office

hahah

Jon
cardboard and duct tape
take it down, i put it back up
office 2.0

At least they don't throw you on vacation :P
without pay

Jon
nope, that would never happen
that you right now?

8:49 PM
Was, lol
I'm a student so losing my part job for two months is kinda costly :P

Jon
i have a good one... there was a guy that shot up our city, killed 3 cops, last summer
my g/f's work closed -- she works at a daycare
in fact, everything was closed for 3 days
while this guy was on the loose

David Fullerton on January 16, 2015

There was a time where it seemed like we barely even needed to talk about this: Joel had won the argument, the Internet agreed that private offices were the future, and only incompetent management (or a tight budget) was still putting developers in cubicle farms. A glorious future lay before us.

The original Fog Creek Bionic Office, way back in ye olde 2003. We didn’t have iPhones, but at least the offices had doors.

Unfortunately, that’s not quite how it turned out. Open plans have been surprisingly hard to kill, despite research showing that they’re unpopular, decrease employee satisfact …

Jon
My girlfriend's work didn't pay her for the time she missed because of this
However, charged all their clients for the missed days

I remember hearing about that guy!

Jon
he's in jail now

8:53 PM
Better be.

Jon
he was pretty bitter about the fact that a cop stepped on his balls during the arrest
He's lucky they didn't shoot off his balls

Well... He did deserve it. I think the cop most likely wanted to shoot him on the spot.

Jon
Quite frankly, I was glad someone stepped on his balls

Jon
Best office is a home office.
Private toilet, custom kitchen, save money on gas/parking
plus, you can fart as loud as you want

8:59 PM
And drink beer.. Coffee is an issue though :/

so who has played?

holy shit. one of my music links got a star

Mutch!
Link me!
@Almo You're welcome!

Jon
played what?

:D

8:59 PM
@Almo life complete!

:)

Jon
banjo-kazooie?

Jon
i'll download this crap

lol.

Jon
@William'MindWorX'Mariager source please.

shaders?

Adding some visualization really helps track down where I'm having problems.
The red should mirror on the other side as well as the green. Seems I'm offsetting something funkily.

Jon
@Mutch95 are you suppose to be able to kill the zombies?

yeah
try weapon 3

9:03 PM
@Mutch95 Yeah, I'm attempting to do normal+specular mapping using a cellular light source rather than point lights.

the work just cats are low damage

@Mutch95 Great game!

Jon
yeah, it is hard to aim and kill a zombie

@William'MindWorX'Mariager interesting results

Yeah aiming is hard xD

Jon
9:03 PM
jumping is broken
and diagonal movements are faster than straight movements

jumping was always broken

Jon
how do you get more ammo?

by pressing r if you have 50 points near an ammo van
h is you have 250 for health

Jon
lol what are the whit edots that fall from the sky?

9:05 PM
.....

That's the source for the shader.

Jon
cool man

It analyses an RGB texture and produces the above result.
It encodes the approximate source light in the RGB channels. It's not functional yet though, so might not really be useful.
Anyways, nightie!

Jon
@Mutch95 cool stuff man, how long did you work on this?

um
50 hours I think
no that can't be right
i slept for only 18 hours in the whole jam

9:09 PM
@Jon Does using unsigned variables violate the CLS or are they converted?

Jon
nice :)

missing 4 hours somewhere

As a return type

Jon
unsigned? why wouold that violate the CLS?

My book says so.. I think :P It's not very clear.

Jon
9:11 PM
ah, I didn't think it would.
you are right
67
Q: Why are unsigned int's not CLS compliant?

doekmanWhy are unsigned integers not CLS compliant? I am starting to think the type specification is just for performance and not for correctness.

Essentially they just seem to have cut this out of CLS compliance

Soo.. If you use it what happens then?

Jon
quite frankly, it would probably work for whatever lang

Yeah
Probably. Not something I'll worry about though.
CIL is quite awesome. Never knew C# was this good.
I found a free book about C# the day after I installed Unity.. Such a coincidence :P

Jon
basically, it won't affect you

Exactly. The compiler will take care of it
I think

Jon
9:14 PM
if you wanted to make your programming language compliant with CLS, you wouldn't have to worry about unsigned data types
but c#/vb.net both have unsigned data types

Yes, but for Unity.. No worries.

Jon
right

Pro C# 2008

Jon
heh. unity. blowing off .net updates since 2.0

Is the name of the book :P

9:15 PM
hahah

Oh yeah? How so?

Jon
eh, you can't use anything post 2.0 stuff in unity :P
It uses a 2.0 version of the Mono libs

ooh you know, not being CLS compliant might explain a lot of instances where a function used a signed int and threw an exception when passing it a negative number

Jon
pimpin'

9:16 PM
herd rumors they working on that.

@Jon -.-

Jon
yes, they are @Almo

This book is for 3.5
:P
@Almo Got more of that music genre?

Jon
3.5 is getting old now.

@Jon has been that way for quite some time

9:17 PM
But it's free! And good to get me started.

which part of it. it's sort of field-recording ambient, but it's also sort of dub techno

That's why .NET uses signed ints where negative values just don't make sense

explains so much

Jon
like, when enumerating through a collection?

that was a question that has been in the back of my mind for years

9:18 PM
@Almo Ambient

sure, with varying degrees of field-recordingness about it

Jon
backflips are easy

@Almo Link some? :D

looking for some that's available. first thing that came to mind is way out of print

9:20 PM
Alright

Julian Roderick Modell - Autonomous Music Project.
hang on, I'll get some that's on you tube or elsewhere.

Jon
music for programming, lol
i can't code to this crap

that also straddles ambient and dub techno

Nice
First one didn't have much of a beat/flow :\

9:22 PM
oop found the rod modell on youtube
this is beatless

I need beat :D

ok
gimme a minute

Cyclonic is good

here's the first 13 minutes of the amazing Illuminati Audio Science, also Rod Modell:
if you can find that whole album, it's very good. Also way out of print.
that's Dub Techno. Here's some more:
I'll leave you with that for now.

Thanks! :D

9:26 PM
sure, any time
Finding music is really fucking hard, and I've practiced it for years. Always nice to help others out.

Yeah. I've been jumping between genres lately
Dub Tech seems promising

Pip
Oh man flying to St. Louis for the FRC Worlds competition tomorrow morning. Hype!

@Hjorthenify yeah, it's a weird one.

if you decide you like it, it goes back to the early 90s
I have some vintage stuff I can point you to

9:28 PM
I was listening to Mozart before you linked that. :P Tell me about vintage stuff ^^

Basic Channel pioneered Dub Techno. Here's one:

Jon
I was listening to california raisins

and another basic channel:

Does Box2D work with Unity?

Jon
box2d is incorporated in unity

9:30 PM
@Almo Thanks I'll look at them after this track :)

sure :)

Oh yeah? That's what they use for 2D physics?

Jon
the physics engine used in unity is box2d code.

and one more: from the first Monolake release in 1995:

Nice. Reason I'm asking is because I saw the System.Runtime.InteropServices namespace

Jon
9:32 PM
not the same Unity

Jon
hmm, i was for some reason thinking of Microsoft.Practices.Unity
which is a dependancy injection pattern

Jon
Used this in my last app, heh

:P
For?

Jon
9:34 PM
the data layer

Ahh

Jon
it made the code kinda hard to debug though

user4704
DI frameworks like that usually do. I don't generally like them.

Jon
yeah, it wasn't my idea :)

user4704
Usually a lot of overengineering for what should be pretty simple.

Jon
9:38 PM
exactly this

@SpartanDonut i hope we can continue our winning streak tonight. I should be on later. :)

Jon
We had a guy that liked to over-engineer everything.
ridiculously
glad I don't work with him anymore. couldn't stand the guy

@Almo WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

:)
we really kick ass on bot lane

Jon
lol... this was an actual water slide

9:44 PM
yes

Not sure if fail...

Action Park was real, and had a lot of safety issues.

Jon
first person to test it came out full of blood

I know someone who actually has been to that park.

Jon
it was run by teenagers
and people died every year

9:47 PM
@Almo my new sona really kicks ass xD

Jon
6 deaths

what are your new runes?

15AP; 7.8 Magic Pen; 6.6 Mana Regen / 5

oh nice
Offensive Sona then
and i bet you get the thing that gives you money for hitting them

yeah

9:54 PM
ok heading out will beep you later :)
