12:02 AM
so I bought elite dangerous, because it's on sale, and it both looks and feels amazing. very immersive. there's just nothing to do, lol.
it has an expansion coming soon though, so hopefully that helps

It's like dating a hot blonde ... oh no you can do sex with hot blonde ...

more like playing a first person version of EVE, just without the economy, manufacturing, or 90% of the options for ship parts, but it has dogfights so that's cool

are you a developer ?

yeahh, I'm tempted to buy Elite: Dangerous as well, but on the fence cuz of those points lol

@yossielimelech yeah I'm a programmer, though my job right now is making software for banks and real estate companies, not games
I have a game framework I work on in my spare time though. the math and graphics stuff is pretty fun.

12:08 AM
hmm yeah I was in the tax programming until 2 months ago couldn't stand it now I'm at home trying to make a living out of what I like... not going well tho
oh your working on a framework :) maybe you are the guy I can discuss with about my little tool i'm trying to build..
let's check what's that elite games that 2 out of 3 ppl alive in this channel knows of and I don't

@Chris well if you buy it now, you should get $15 off the price of the expansion. or you can wait and buy the expansion for $60 and you get the base game with it. so either way you pay the same amount, but buying it now means you can try it out before paying full price.
of course that means if the expansion sucks, you're still down $15

It's a case where I'd probably play it for a day, and then not pick it back up very much
I'm sure I'd enjoy playing but, but wouldn't bother playing it for long
just dropped $90 NZD on Star Wars: Battlefront as it is lol
and Fallout 4 haha

can you guys check out my new topic if you have any thoughts or want to discuss my idea i'll be glad if not and you find it still interesting question vote :) gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/112005/…

12:42 AM
@yossielimelech if I'm understanding that post correctly, I think you want a finite state machine. you can probably google that and find some examples.
maybe google the command pattern too. not sure if you'll need it or not, but it might give you some ideas.

1:12 AM
i'm sure i'd get bored with elite pretty fast

I have a friend who loves Elite to bits and spends ages playing it. The stuff I hear about is how amazing the exploration is, and the interactions with other players, and the interesting way the pirates operate.

lookin for anyone interested in both LoL and cryptocurrencies I could refer to a program where you get paid some crypto (micro bits... worthless unless that currency is someday worth something) just for playing LoL. I've been in a the program for months, and it's working. so if you're interested, just drop me a mail (almo2001@yahoo.com) I get a bonus if I refer people.

At one point he was pulled over by pirates who gave him three options: (a) dump half his cargo for them, (b) die, (c) write a poem about their glorious leader. he chose (d) point his ship in the direction they'll have the most trouble chasing him, and run for it.
i wouldn't be able to get into Elite though; I have no interest in sandbox games.

I wouldn't count on any cryptocurrency going up in value by orders of magnitude
that sort of thing is pretty much over now

my thought was "it can't hurt to have some of this stuff"

1:19 AM
nah, can't hurt. but now that everyone and their dog knows about the stuff and can mine it, big changes in value are really unlikely.

and it's not true that "orders of magnitude" are over. if you hold some coin a whale gets interested in and you sell on the spike, you can get two orders of magnitude sometimes.

maybe if amazon started taking bitcoin payments, lol

they'd be dumb to do that until it's less volatile
:)
it was trundling along at $280 about for a LONG time, suddenly it's over $400, a bunch of people bought in imagining the $1000 of long ago again, and boom it's back to $300.

1:46 AM
hahaha
steam game

nice

2:29 AM
review for Verdun FPS:
Uninstall other shooter FPS (EA)
Install Verdun
Launch the game
Go prone - die
Stand up - die
Rush to the enemy base - die
Try to snipe - get sniped by somebody else
Rage
Repeat

Definitely recommend this game to anyone

lol

WWI shooter is going to be brutal if it's at all realistic :)
what have I gotten myself into. I bought it
looks really hardcore
fucking bolt-action rifles and shit

lol

4 GB downloading now
will report after I play it for a while.

link?

sweet. It does look nice

yeah :)
I like that it probably doesn't have helicopter backup when you hit a 5-kill streak
hate that kind of shit in shooters.

that's a very fast-paced snowball type of thing

yeah

been years since I played CoD MW2

2:43 AM
to me, someone doesn't need that kind of backup if they get streaks
but I'm an old-school gamer :)

watching streams..... it's also very satisfying that when you land a bullet, it plays a distinct and satisfying sound
haha yeah, it's its own genre really

I expect to get victimized pretty badly early on
but if my plan works out, I'll develop into a sniper :)

snipers you say

hahah

I think you need to play planetside instead
everyone else in this chat too, and then we can group up and wreck things
or I can just go back to leveling my league alt

1 hour later…
4:27 AM
@Chris played a couple games. AFKs don't get booted soon enough and you can't kick them. But I had fun. it IS fucking brutal. When you die, it doesn't tell you why or how, just who did it.

5:08 AM
ah yes

1 hour later…
6:20 AM
@Chris One of the guys in a yellow shirt looks like Scott Stirling :D

6:45 AM
I almost feel guilty for getting this many votes.

A: How can a 3D game render an object without having a sprite for every single angle?

Aidan MuellerMultiple methods There is a number of methods for rendering and storing 3D graphics and models. There are even different methods for rendering 2D graphics! In addition to 2D bitmaps, you also have SVG. SVG uses numbers to define points in an image. These points make shapes. The points can also d...

This has never happened to me before.

It's all the pictures and diagrams that gives you mad upvotes

Haha. Maybe.

Just put some pictures in all your posts. Did you draw any of those yourself or just scoop them? That projection one especially looks good.
That's on Stack Overlow, too - that's impressive.

No I didn't draw them. I provided credit where it was required by the creative commons license that was used.
But I think it's also the organization and formatting.
I now spend time trying to organize what I write.

Yes of course. I try to answer less and better.

rep cap for days

Indeed.
Stupid rep cap :(
I do see the purpose though.
Wouldn't want someone to become a moderator in one post or anything :)

@AidanMueller did you read the meta post about the question?

Looked at it.

About which question - rep caps?

no, the one where aidan got upvoted through the roof

7:02 AM
Where's that?

Q: Very Broad Question, Very Nice Answer

IkeI want to direct attention to this thread which got shut down for asking a question that was too broad. Please see the answer from Aidan at the bottom. How Are 3D Models Rendered in a Game? The answer has 6 up-votes and was already provided 4 hours before the thread was closed as being too broa...

7:17 AM
My eyes feel foggy.
Probably had too much fun.
Went off-roading.

@AidanMueller fun is indeed a bad thing, you should probably avoid it at all costs

Why the fuck did I decide to write empty tiles to the editor level file

user92578
Takes soo much space

@Tyyppi_77 that's not a bad decision though (depending on how much space they require and what percent of your tiles is empty

user92578
It kinda is, most layers are probably like 95% empty

that's odd to have that meany empty tiles... but with that many empty tiles... I guess it is bad...

user92578
yeah

user92578
11:57 AM
I'll change that today probably

Jon
1:14 PM
This is seriously a really unfortunate name to have.
Considering ISIS didn't exist a few years ago -- people named their children Isis

user92578
wow yeah

Jon
There is a band in Montreal, Empire Isis

user92578
there is a quite funny joke about Isis that only works in Finnish

Jon
Pretty sure that band isn't playing anymore

user92578
Basically a immigrant mom says to her child when dropping him/her to the daycare "Isis tulee hakeen sut tänään"

user92578
1:22 PM
Which translates to "Your dad comes to pick you up today"

user92578
or "Isis comes to pick you up today"

Jon
mom gets thrown in jail
TERROR!!!

user92578
nah, it's finland

user92578

Jon
Unrelated, but someone made a comment on a video of people on black friday sales
"Shameful, people fighting over shitty TVs they WANT. Nothing they NEED."
Imagine how these same people would behave, if they needed to eat.

1:25 PM
those fights on sale days are truly embarassing

Jon
such a big deal for a damn personalized nutella container
@Almo it is quite frankly, a shameful display of the human race

it's not even about getting something there's a shortage of (needed or wanted ignored), it's just about saving a few dollars on said items.

Jon
And most of those people can't even afford the damn sale item in the first place.

:(

Jon
What they really need, is to buy their children new clothing

1:27 PM
yeah
(I gotta head to work, but yeah)

Jon
I don't know what the heck is going on at my work... but my nic gets shut off randomly, and requires a reboot
Can't stop the service, can't disable/re-enable the nic.. it just kills it
And it has been happening to random people... some are not affected at all
I'm thinking the DHCP server may be dishing out the same IP.. but doesn't really explain the card dying unless it is being flooded or something
oh yeah, and the PC needs to be turned off, as the reboot takes like 10 minutes

user92578
With basically this: if (tileID == 0) continue;

user92578
That's like 2000% decrease

user92578
This is how I should initially have designed this

user92578
But because I came from TMX I went with it's model of saving tiles

wow man. that's some hardcore shit
played about an hour
had a bad dream about it later. sitting in a trench, hear an incoming whistle, BOOM dead woke up.
I can't even image what it must have been like for the real people in that

Jon
2:52 PM
not as fun
first of all, when you shoot someone in real life, they typically don't just fall over and die, then dissapear --- they fall over, and yell, and scream -- then more then likely keep screaming for a few hours into lunacy, then acceptance, then death.

3:14 PM
@Jon they often won't even fall over. sometimes you can get shot and won't even notice it - especially if you're already hurt, especially if adrenaline is pumping because someone's shooting at you

Jon
someone should make THAT game
where when you kill someone, the game makes you feel so bad, you need therapy for your PTSD

@Jon 2Dark probably similarly horrifies you but in a different way

Trying out some icicles(?) under the snow:

user92578

user92578
thoughts?

user92578
I don't think they're very well drawn

@Tyyppi_77 icicles without empty air don't make much sense
they don't feel like they belong there
now, under the ceilings of those cubby houses, or among the struts, or underneath the cubby houses where they're resting on the struts? that would be perfect

user92578
4:03 PM
oh

user92578
well that would just be too much work

user92578
The current system easily supports icicles under the snow on the dirt

user92578
but thanks a lot for the feedback

user92578
I guess I'll take them out then :)

user92578

I should learn how to make an actual out of the box build of GunHero

installers are evil, horrible things. it's much safer to keep writing code indefinitely.

user92578
I wasn't really talking about an installer

user92578
Probably just a release-build exe in a ZIP file with the resources there too

oh I see

user92578
resource paths will likely break tough

5:07 PM
just don't use absolute paths for them. that's not a big deal.
where you'll run into issues is with prereqs that have to be installed, like VC++ or something. most of our computers will have that stuff anyway, though.

user92578
Most of the stuff (the things that use ContentLoader) will work fine, as ContentLoader has a path utility thing pointing to the right place

user92578
Oh, right

user92578
But yeah, if I remember to, I'll probably try this tomorrow

user92578
It's would be great to get some crushing honest feedback

Q: Puzzle bubble game mouse pointer problem

Abdul MateenI'm making a simple c++ game. But i'm a beginner. The game is basically a clone of puzzle bubble. Now I have to rotate the bubble gun with mouse cursor. But after so much effort, I still have not found a way to keep the length of the gun constant. Anyone please help me.

that got an upvote...

Jon
what does gpu stand for?

anyone know if its possible to define a struct of just 2 bytes in hlsl ?
I have a funny feeling that byte is not a supported type :(
I spose i could use uint or half
need this thing to be as small as possible though
@Jon are you trolling me?

10:01 PM
half maps to float on modern GPU's. Pretty sure the GPU use 4-byte registers, so allocating anything less is going to take 4-bytes anyway, unless you pack the bytes yourself

hmm ok ... just worried about the size of my working set here
on the cpu I have it working pretty effiently with voxels being defined as ...
struct Voxel {
    byte Weight;
    byte Type;
}
not sure how I can directly map that in to a gpu struct
my thinking is i can't, may have to redefine Voxel ... that could get ugly

Jon
some guy tweeted an error from my shopping cart system

Q: Under What Circumstances Might Nintendo Change its HDK/SDK Licensing Model?

RandomDSdevelUnder what circumstances might Nintendo decide to transition from its current, paid-only software/hardware development kit access model to one more like Apple's tiered system, under which you can do all the development (and testing, now that you side-load apps with Xcode 7.x,) you want for free b...

To chat.

@RandomDSdevel I guess no body except nintendo itself can answer that question

It didn't get much discussion Wednesday, so I'm popping my head back in here to see if anybody had any ideas about this.
@Ali.S: But we can speculate, can't we?

I guess the only real answer is that happens if nintendo feels it'll earn more money that way
I guess the reason iOS gave up it's strict method in xcode 7.x was because it's android was a real threat
and nintendo, right now, doesn't feel that kind of threat right now
both MS and Sony (And soon to be valve) are following the same model as nintendo so why should they change?

@Ali.S oh? what changed with Xcode 7?

also consider the fact that MS did try free for all model with it's XNA, and even they are not pursuing that method with their XBox-One... so nintendo might think, maybe there is something wrong with that
@Chris you can test on actual device, before getting developer ID

10:42 PM
ah yep. Yeah that's a welcome change, less barrier to entry

although you (obviously) still need developer ID to distribute your app, and you've got to share it through app store, there is no other way (although there seemed to be some other ways before)

oh that is so awesome

mmm at the moment with MS, you gotta show you're at least probably competent to ship a game, and then they'll welcome you aboard their programme
@Lasse lol

@Chris I don't really know the details... but their SDK is not free for all

yeah, it's their discretion to give you some contracts to sign

10:51 PM
@Pip Auto route isn't a reliable solution, just a time-saver.

user4704
@Ali.S They're trying something arguably better with the Xbox One.

@Wardy Sadly, static linking libSatanicCurse locks you to a given deity, have you considered OpenCL?

user4704
I'm not sure this is really something that aligns with Nintendo's culture at all.

@JoshPetrie I guess then, I don't know...

coding against the unity api atm

user4704
10:53 PM
They do generally make their devkits fairly easy to acquire.

but compute is all hlsl is it not ? weather you use openCL or direct compute (or is that a dumb question)

user4704
But what you're looking for, by comparison with Apple like that, is essentially the commercialization of the development hardware and tools.

user4704
That's a fairly major undertaking, it has taken Apple a lot of time and a lot of money to build the infrastructure they have around the iOS development platform (and it's still got some obnoxious rough corners).

user4704
So in order for Nintendo to do that you'd have to expect that they see a fairly major competitive advantage in having it.

user4704
I don't think they do (and I don't think there is), at least not right now or for the near future.

user4704
10:56 PM
Nintendo generally choses to take their competitive advantages in the form of unique, out-of-the-box stuff (or attempts at the same, at least).

user4704
And historically they are extremely bad at doing things like "infrastructure."

user4704
And "internet."

It sounds like they're finally being forced to up their game

Well, that would be really nice, especially since flashcarts, the bane of homebrew software developers and anti-pirates everywhere would go away if game development was more like development for personal computers. I wonder what kinds of circumstances would make doing that seem more profitable to Nintendo than its current system? I think that its recent change of CEO — may Iwata-san rest in peace — might give the company a nudge in that direction.

user4704
Doubtful.

10:59 PM
Well, they've at least expressed some interest in going in that direction, so it doesn't seem that far-fetched to me:

user4704
There's no real evidence that Kimishima departs that significant from the existent corporate philosophy

user4704
(as far as I've seen)

I'm sure if Nintendo ever flops enough that hardware costs are no longer sustainable for them, that they'll just go software-only. Until then, Nintendo really likes their hardware

Eh, you're right: integration of development tools is orthogonal to commercializing them, though it would be really nice if they'd do both.

user4704
I don't really think the quotes in that article are addressing your point about commercialization of development.

user4704
11:01 PM
To me these read more like hardware normalization.

@Chris Exactly!

according to this video (which is an excellent watch), Iwata cut his salary in half when the Wii U sales were horrible, as he didn't want to have to fire people

@JoshPetrie Right, right…guess I'm getting my hopes up too much.

Hoping too much is like worrying too much - it doesn't really get you anywhere lol

11:21 PM
I just wish homebrew development were easier! I want to get into it, but Nintendo keeps patching the vulnerabilities that the community uses to hack in the Homebrew Channel on the 3DS! An official SDK would be very welcome, in my opinion, and so would access to consumer versions of legacy SDKs for those who still want to use older systems but would consider using the official variants of them instead of third-party substitutes if the former were available!

so dev for a platform that welcomes it
android, iOS, pc, mac, linux

thing is, I don't think Nintendo wants that much open access since that makes it easier for piracy. I mean, the homebrew scene is made possible due to exploits

@Almo: But I want to make games for portable and home consoles like Ninty's, too! I want to share my stuff with other Nintendo users (and maybe even work on some of the Big N's IPs some day!)

people who are into the homebrew scene will avoid updating if possible. they know that breaks things. they might decide on a certain version for them all to sit on until some important update comes out, then someone will crack that and most of them will update at once.
but don't count on sharing things with your friends just because they use a nintendo product
you'll have to get them to mod their stuff just to run the thing, which isn't gonna happen unless they're already into the scene

@IcyDefiance @IcyDefiance: The problem with that is that you run the risk of bricking your system if you inadvertently update its firmware.

11:29 PM
https://wiiu-developers.nintendo.com/ - you can buy a devkit and then make stuff using Unity or HTML5
anything else is breaking Nintendo's terms

I think they have a C++ SDK, too, right?

you run the risk of bricking your system just by softmodding the thing. when I did that to a Wii there were like 3 steps where the instructions were like "screw this up and your machine will never turn on again"
that's inherent to the whole process

@RandomDSdevel Yeah, but for that stuff you gotta be like an established developer
the Unity/HTML5 programme is more aimed towards budding developers :)
yeah, and that's why you get quality assurance testing and stuff doing it all official - the engineers make sure your code isn't gonna break stuff

whereas risking bricking your system that you paid good money for, just a tad bit risky

tbh the odds of bricking things when softmodding is pretty low, as long as you can read instructions and follow them properly
but yeah, you lose all protection from that sort of thing when you break nintendo's tos

@Chris That's the problem! People who start out with desktop-class programming languages and want to hack stuff together in their garages to sell are left completely out of the loop! This is exactly why Nintendo should release their SDKs to the public!
@IcyDefiance I meant online friends, though I could always toss people IRL a link for them to peruse and see if they want to do it or not…

11:35 PM
the other thing is, pretty much everyone has a PC. if you just want to make a game to show your friends, that's gonna work better than nintendo anyway.

@RandomDSdevel Write them a letter then lol

but I kind of like the pc master race joke, so I have to hold myself back in that discussion, lol

I've tried that before, back in the heyday of the original Nintendo DS. Their response was, to paraphrase, "get a flashcart to save a development portfolio to."

I imagine in their eyes, if what you can create is good enough to sell and make money, they'll welcome you aboard. These days, I'd say things are a bit more looser in terms of who they'll embrace, but still it's a closed system with a company that wants to make money to be sustainable. And since their hardware has never been open-ended for anyone to start coding for, yeah, it'll be a huge shift if that ever happens
whereas Android has been open-ended from the get-go, and windows/linux/mac too, that's just how it is
nothing's stopping anyone from creating a whole new hardware console and operating system and SDK if they so see fit
(apart from time and money lol)

The marketing of that new platform alone would be a major nightmare; I don't think I'd be up to it at the moment myself.

11:40 PM
yeah, I mean Ouya recently, that didn't work out too well, and that was even based on Android so wasn't completely from scratch

That's still a direction I might consider in the future if things don't work out between me and Ninty in the long run, but I hope it doesn't come to anything like that.
In the meantime, I might do something like this:
1.) Finish learning how to program in C++ on OS X.
2.) Make some homebrew software for the original Nintendo DS using my flashcart.
3.) Build my portfolio from there across multiple systems, hopefully including some Ninty ones eventually.

@RandomDSdevel Well, that's not really how it works. Worse, even third party official developers have a tough time making any money on N consoles. N insists on doing the manufacturing for you, and they take a hefty cut. If you don't sell a ton, it's a losing proposition.
