10:00 PM
the benefit of browser games - page source :P
you get some neat ideas for implementation of ideas through that

especially if it's an embedded unity player :P

:D
in 2000, I wrote a javascript obfuscator so our code wasn't really legible
that was fun. three weeks of fucking around with bash and awk

yeh but now chrome dev tools allows you prettify the code :P
so minify is pointless to make it hard to re-use but minify is useful for performance
i generally to make it hard to re-use is just remove all //comments

I can only imagine how poorly written the code is

the headache of understanding an engine from some one's style of coding is not worth it given how big the engines get

10:03 PM
if removing the comments makes it hard to re-use

well i dont give var's useful names
so i have a word doc with the var names and their purpose
same for functions

if you had an awesome AI like Tony Stark's, telling you what each var does by voice commands
you'd actually look cool too

im sure i could copy pasta my word doc to a word to voice app
record each line etc :P

but if you're not porting CryEngine to JavaScript

doesn't blind people's screen recorders do that ?

10:04 PM
I doubt anyone would ever bother to look at your code
even less to re-use it

well html5 canvas games not widely used theres a few examples of isometric use around but they all suck

so just make work easier for yourself
and write proper code

ive over last 2 years managed to get it v.high performance
at the price of a bit of ugly code :P

what's the problem with people reusing code anyway? unless you're big enough that suing all the copycats is impossible, or you want to improve security through obscurity.
as long as they're not just republishing the exact same game

you know, sooner or later, a decent canvas tutorial will pop up, but:
1) you're fooling yourself if you think you're somehow diminishing the competition by making your code harder to read

10:07 PM
i could make one .
well it feels bitter to work from blank for 2 years for some one else to copy pasta

if there's someone able to make something worthy of earning money, you can be sure they already know what they need to do

as i made my own library im sure no one will use it anyway :P

or more exactly, there are more reliable sources than your library for the job at hand

i might yet just convert to APK for devices as those u cannot fully decrypt

like I said, if they're not republishing the same game, the only thing you should feel is pride that someone found some portion of your code to be great enough to reuse

10:08 PM
@IcyDefiance if i got credited i guess so

if they are republishing the same game, take legal action

2) your code is not worthy of being copy-pasted at all

thats hard to do if they in usa im in uk :P
plus legal action is impossible for a lone dev like me unless the law helps us little poor people

judging by how poorly written you say it is, only some random noob would attempt to adopt it immediately

ah, you need to switch locations then. then you can arrest anyone. :D

10:09 PM
so totally no competition for you

its not poor written i just use things like :

var tg = gh + 23.3;

and of course, 3) NOBODY CARES ENOUGH

tells you nothing but my word doc tells me what tg and gh hold etc

you're like those people who have some sort of idea for a business but won't share it with someone else
because the others might steal it

right cos its not like business's dont apply for patents for same thing ;)

10:12 PM
patents don't mean much

have you not seen these smart devices law suits going on left right and center

you're a small guy - you patent something - Microsoft uses what you patented and won't ask or pay you
you sue them, with your $X thousands budget
they've got $100 mil budget
WHAT DO YOU DO

id have to represent myself :P if i got a patent on it u cannot really lose

lol
anyway, the idea is that pretty much nobody cares about your business idea

10:14 PM
but i guess theres alot of fine lines and differences that they will argue :P

and certainly won't make an investment in money and effort to work on someone else's idea
that was the point

money/fame > justice. see every single celebrity trial ever.

also, take a look at all of those INCREDIBLY RARE events when a small company won in a lawsuit against a giant like Microsoft
and see if they're actually telling you if:
1) Microsoft did pay
2) Microsoft didn't appeal and win afterwards

theres probably alot of out of court situations

how the fuck do I get caught in these exotic discussions anyway
I'll get back to my coding

10:16 PM
discussions are fun

the out of court situations would be more like "you let this go or you will be spending enough money on the trial to bankrupt your company even if you did win"
or "pay us $5k instead, or we'll counter sue about so-and-so"
btw Dave, do you plan to be earning any money on what you're making, or is it just a personal project?

its a pay " for perks "but you can also earn them free the long way by playing
so im not aiming for money as my main goal as i would probably produce crap rushed game
if i cover server cost i consider it a success

here's a nice talk on the topic
I'll end the discussion with this
one of the mistakes listed there is exactly the one about patents

at any rate, big companies will copy your game if it gets any success, even if they don't use your code. see every game Zynga has ever released. It's so commonplace that they don't even try to hide it anymore.
and if any small-timer copies it, DMCA should help

when you, as a small dude, think you're safe if you patented something
and why you'll always lose when someone bigger than you takes you on

10:20 PM
its a shame the law wont protect the little dude
some times the little dudes are the ones who come up with the best ideas

as @IcyDefiance said, at the most extreme level, they'll just drag you through courts until you are left with no money, if you keep on protecting your stuff

it's the big guys that make the laws. of course they don't protect the little ones.

yes, it's the little dudes that come up with an idea
and that "little" is good too
if you're little and stepping on Microsoft's patents, it's quite a great chance for them to leave you alone

well when your house bound and poor being robbed by big industry is no fun :(

what benefit would be to sue a company with a tiny budget? Microsoft won't gain much

10:22 PM
true

dunno, MPAA loves to do that

if you gain enough for the big dogs to care about you, you probably have enough money for a lawsuit anyway

if EA rob my idea i feel fine as they balls everything up normally xD

nah EA doesn't rob ideas, they just use the same ones they had 15 years ago, over and over and over.

Gameloft robs ideas
man, I hate that company even more than Zynga
all of their games are basically ripoffs, except for the branded games like Iron Man and whatever
NOVA is Halo
Asphalt is Burnout

10:24 PM
one i hate is the crazy of building like a isometric town in an app
press the building to get coins and repeat

@AlexM. yes

they even have a ripoff of Starcraft
a Starcraft ripoff!!
what the hell
Gangstar is GTA

Yeah GameLoft does make clones

lol Starcraft has to be one of the hardest games in existence to ripoff

Mobile Clones

10:25 PM
and make any money from, that is

gameloft owned by the Guillmots, who own Ubisoft

no one copied pacman i noticed

@IcyDefiance They made tons of money from NOVA

the first one and the second at least

10:26 PM
isnt star craft simliar to age of empires but a different theme

Modern Combat is Modern Warfare
(Call of Duty)

Battlefield more like

@Dave dude... no
@Dave dude... nox2

you think COD is more modern combat than battlefield ?
get out >.>

10:27 PM
eh, gameplay is similar to AoE, but it's nowhere near the same game.

Battlefield is a massive multiplayer FPS

@IcyDefiance ^

its specifics are HUGE maps

it has COD size maps too lol

with tons of vechicles and players on

10:27 PM
yeh so... modern combat..
combat isn't limited to walking on foot

modern combat is a shitty campaign game
with small maps

i see

modern combat is a ripoff of Call of Duty

is game dev tycoon on pc same as the one in apps?
or different company?

it's the same I think

10:29 PM
oh ok
anyway why would they rip of COD, when COD is a rip off is rubbish =/

what is CoD ripping off?

its ripping off its modern warfare 1
:P
hasnt changed since.

and there I was expecting a decent answer

although the new one has dogs... so... yeh pushing the limits now

like "Quake" or "Counter Strike"

10:31 PM
i think CS closer linked to COD than Quake

CoD is the fastest multiplayer FPS I've played since Quake, that isn't an exact descendant

oh yeh its v.fast i agree

the fast gameplay started with Quake

i don't like the arcade feel to it tho i want bullet drop etc like BF style personally
quake was awesome

in terms of gameplay speed, to keep the comparison between the two worlds, Battlefield is more like Unreal Tournament
man this makes me want to play UT again
the awesome Assaults in UT '99
and the huge maps with vehicles in 2004 <3
I left UT '99 at the last level when I played it months ago
here, have a piece of a real game

10:36 PM
thanks

UT never reached the fame it deserved :(
people were leaning more towards Quake 3 Arena's fast gameplay
UT is so much more than Q3
Q3 can only go as far as CTF

UT is better for deathmatch. Q3 is better for CTF, especially 3Wave CTFS
since there's no real way to move faster in UT, its CTF is not as interesting.
Since the weapons in Quake 3 aren't intricate, deathmatch isn't as interesting

I was going to highlight the extra match types when comparing with Q3
like Assault or Domination

here's a manuver I pulled in a Q3 match to grab the flag: youtube.com/watch?v=i6rqumD-9Hk
Dom was good. Assault was busted
piston jumping kind of broke it

in what ways?

10:40 PM
you could skip half the level on overlord by jumping in the big gun hole on the beach
more than half the level actually

never tried that lol

most of the levels had problems like that

actually I don't remember being able to jump very high with the piston
or what do you mean by gun hole?
I remember the layout of overlord being two bunkers on the beach
two towers
and the mortar thingies near the entrance to the base
when defending I'd sit in a tower which also spawned a sniper IIRC
also nice @ Q3 move

I don't really remember any more... I just remember not playing assault any more after seeing that
thanks :)
gotta go do dinner
talk to you guys later :)

well Overlord was the final mission in Assault
so you played it all :D

10:43 PM
me dinner as well hungry ttyl.

(campaign-wise)
not multiplayer
unfortunately I did not get to play enough mp ut 99 as I'd have wished :(
what I did play was the original unreal gold in mp
fun on dm_terra
<3 that map
top comment: *walks into Blizz corp after playing "Diablo 3"*
...The sanctity of this place has been fouled.
My wallet's $60 WILL be avenged...
haha, I agree with this dude

only played diablo 2
damn good game it was.

you don't get this level of grim in Diablo 3

true diablo 3 is too... well i mean it's a good game

2:19 - it's farnham

10:49 PM
i can't quite verbalize the feelings that differ D3, but the game sorta feels like quite missing.

Blizzard is now all about pandas and zerg boobs

oh yeah now I get it. D3 feels more like action slash game; nothing more or less.
that must be why i felt as if the game had shallow depth.

the problem with D3 is that the story is so stupid it feels like a shitty action movie with dolph lundgren
and everything else is WoW

I once saw a wizard of the same level, but his items were too OP. He slew all the monsters I had to struggle running and blinking with a single beam.
I felt worthless and cheated; bought op items with real money.

10:58 PM
yup

Anyone ever heard of Indie Complex? They are a nice podcast channel for indies on the tube.

felt so much power; quit the game next week;silly.

This is why you regulate items of power with level nums.
Or not... but then why make it in the first place. The player doesn't really work for it.
(in-game) at least

11:20 PM
i like turtles
