C#
doesnt unity uses Mono?

no, no
i want to as if i can convert int to bytes in unity client and then send it
or maybe there is a better way to send it

yes, you can convert a int to bytes. you can search a method to do it on unity, or do by yourselft with bit shifts

what about this stream.WriteByte(data.Lenght); ??
i could somehow turn that byte into a number

data.Lenght is a int, it has four bytes, not just one
dependending on the endianness it may work.
but if the size is greater than 255 you'll have problems

@James I believe it was TFCraft?

4:08 PM
@CodeAssasssin are you able to do some artwork for me?

@GustavoGtoknu Sure, what is it?

I've got the GUI working on the editor, buttons to select the tools and all that. but the buttons are identified by numbers, i wanted something like a icon of a pencil, a icon of a eraser, etc
As you're the master of ripping heh

Lol
What size?

32x 32
or 16x16

Okay I'll send them to u brb

4:10 PM
either is good
pencil, eraser, color picker and color bucket
Thanks little tweak :)
going to make the color scroll bars now

thanks :o

Lol - I didn't know which ones to pick lol
Was looking for something grayish - but they have a lot of web 2.0 icons

@GustavoGtoknu hey
what about sending the lenght like this:
stream.Write(data.Lenght, 0, data.Length);

won't work
but you could try stream.Write(data.lenght, 0, 4);

anyway why do i have to write the lenght if i dont even read it?

4:34 PM
@CodeAssasssin What do u think designcontest.com/free-outline-icons ?
-.-
you DO read, if you dont, then you HAVE to.

user4704
@GustavoGtoknu Don't hardcode the size like that :(

@GustavoGtoknu Me Gusta(Me Like)

@JoshPetrie It's his way to do it lol.

what part does it? int lenght = inB.readInt();
char[] buffer = new char[lenght];
for(int i = 0; i < lenght; ++i)
{
buffer[i] = inB.readChar();
}
String message = new String(buffer);
s = message;
break;

4:36 PM
@GustavoGtoknu Looks nice, you should use it

@GustavoGtoknu it reads first 4 bytes

@Liukas And isnt your string lenght 4 bytes? lol
i mean, the lenght of the int saying the lenght.

@GustavoGtoknu but first i write ID byte

havent you already read the ID at this part? lol.

user4704
What problem are we solving exactly?

4:40 PM
@JoshPetrie can haz free Guild Wars?
(Trolol)

user4704
Game's not even out yet :P

user4704
Assuming you mean GW2.

Take my money now :(

user4704
but you can totally head over to buy.guildwars2.com

user4704
and I will happily take your money

4:42 PM
Lol

I don't even have CPU enough to run the game ):

user4704
who cares maybe you will in the future.

user4704
buy it anyhow!

Buy it, Josh needs a new yacht :D

Josh is the developer of GW2? xD

4:46 PM
cool we have a real life professional dev in here
what kind of work do you do on gw2?

that is so cool!

he's the lead developer and the lead artist and the director and the producer :o

wow

user4704
There are several professional developers who visit this site.

user4704
I'm an engineering lead at ArenaNet, I run shared technology teams.

4:51 PM
srsly, its the opcode guy again? :)

Talking about professionals, where is Trevor Powell :o, has been a long time i dont see him online

oh its length of the string now, thats ok .)

i bet you all finished universities or something

user4704
Why would that matter?

4:53 PM
+2

+N^2

i just think this isn't the best plase for my questions

Lot of great genious didnt even finished the high school, like Walt Disney :)

i never graduated college...

Knowledge isn't found just on schools, little.

user4704
4:55 PM
I mean, I finished and went to grad school for a bit, but that doesn't really amount for much. Plus I went to a terrible school anyhow.

you don't need school if you have passion
4

Back o:

user4704
I don't know that I'd agree with that, per se.

how old were you guys when you started developing stuff?

user4704
Six.

4:56 PM
@JoshPetrie o.O

user4704
My first language was Hypertalk.

Eight :)

@CodeAssasssin Haha, Yeah that is a fun mod :)

4:57 PM
14
15

user4704
Actually maybe five.

How old were you when you actually started understanding what you were doing?

user4704
Hypercard came out in 1987 and I was born in 1982. So something like five or six.

@JoshPetrie o.o

you mean you vere programing when you were 6?

4:58 PM
@TreDubZedd I'd say 9 or 10

@TreDubZedd 12

user4704
That's when I started, yeah.

I started at 11

Or not :/

i started writing html / javascript when i was 13, didn't start doing game dev stuff until i was 20

4:59 PM
@CodeAssasssin you still dont understand your code lol

html and javascript hadn't been invented until I was 20

@GustavoGtoknu Delete. Delete. Delete

haha

@JoshPetrie Quick question, when did you first famous release was released? :o

user4704
The first commercial product I worked on was Rise of Legends.

5:00 PM
i started web development when i was 14. now i'm 16 and i started TRYING to develope games half a year ago

Indie or already on a enterprise?

user4704
It was a commercial product.

user4704
Not an indie project.

awesome

Someone threatens my genius at my CS902 class lol
Being the only 12 year old in the class, there is another kid who has challenged me to a programming contest
rage
Sunday - In Computer Science Lab
Lolzy

5:03 PM
@Liukas, you're young, have some patience

Im going to lose :D

@CodeAssasssin even if you "win" it wont worth nothing.

@stephelton you mean i should learn stuff before developing games?

@GustavoGtoknu Lol

@Liukas i have no idea what you do or don't know... but you have to start somewhere. if you know enough programming that you can make some games, i see no reason not to start.

5:07 PM
what do you think about engines like Unity?

What do you want to learn @Liukas?

programing

Thats a bit broad.

If you want to make games and work on mechanics, game design and such stuff go with Unity or such.

I would say it's better to learn how a game works. Even if you go with unity.
I mean, not work on your game engine NO.
but actually try to understand at least what a cross and dot product is.

5:11 PM
If you want to learn how a game engine works, how to draw sprites, how to register input, how to do networking, etc. try to code your own simple engine.

People often choose unity because it is easy to make a game and all that, but actually dont even understand what he's doing. Because unity is doing it.

Depending on whichever of these you want to do.

user4704
Just write a bunch of games; little games even.

user4704
I write asteroids all the time, as a means of learning new languages or technologies.

user4704
Or space invaders.

5:12 PM
I've never released nothing, but I really have lots of little projects on my hard disk :)

@GustavoGtoknu Lol I've seen for myself :D

C#, C++, Java, some VERY old projects in pascal

user4704
I remember Pascal.

@Liukas, you don't have to know what you want to learn right now :) if that question is hard to answer, i'd suggest you start writing a very simple game like pong. as you make more games, you'll start to realize what you like most

And by the way, I would say for you to stay away of networking for now.
Is your focus learn how to dev games or networking?

5:17 PM
wow busy today

@stephelton i developed a very simple 2D rpg game without a normal gameplay(android, java), but i did it without any engines or something. It was fun, but the bad thing was that i cant express my imagination when my knowledge is so limited

@Dave and Gajet's back, if you haven't seen him.

yeh :) i will speak to him when hes on later :) yay

@GustavoGtoknu i would like to focus on both

@Liukas why don't you set aside your limitations for a sec, come up with your game idea, and then try to understand what challenges you'd have to overcome to implement it..?

5:20 PM
@Liukas IMHO its better if you focus on just one.

@dave I'm here

one step at a time.

@Gajet hey dude - i found some issues with the path finder

@GustavoGtoknu what does IMHO mean? :D

now I'm thinking I've even replied you asking for jsfiddle link

5:21 PM
i didn't get such a notification

@Liukas in my humble opinion

but ill post it now

Btw, you have a game if you dont have networking, but you have just a bunch of data going through cables if you have network but dont have game, So i'd say to learn game dev first :)
2

@everyone IMHO don't even try learning unity.

5:22 PM
it's just a rubbish gameengine

+1 again.

@Gajet why?

what engine would u recommend then :P

Well, I think it worth much more a simple 2D game made by yourself, than just some 3d models thrown in a editor with 5 lines of script that you could call a "first person shooter made by me on unity"

5:24 PM
your own engine

well yes but for some people that ain't an option
time = money

developing your engine sure works good

I never do game development for money - at least not now :P

Ah, that's fine, but I guess most people here aren't so obsessed for money and time :P

no if you're driven to make money by making a game.. expect dissapointment

5:25 PM
beside that for now I recommend esenthel for 3D and cocos2d for 2d development

i think i will go back to 2D java projects, because i realised i skiped a lot of important stuff

also ogre3D is nice, if you don't care!

btw I'm using Ogre3D and loving it :)

Ogre3D = Very Unkind to beginners :(

You're right

5:26 PM
@Liukas I've started a new thread right now, so don't worry about missing anything, you even replied to my first message!

thats why there is game dev and stack overflow @CodeAssasssin

What i could do in irrlicht in 20 minutes i got like 2 hours on Ogre

@CodeAssasssin agreed, but still it does what it's supposed to do

@Gajet Of course it's a good engine.

I didn't have any experience with irrlicht

5:27 PM
Is it an engine?

But after everything was setup, Ogre give me much less headaches. Irrlicht design isnt that good.

OGRE is a OO GR aphics E ngine

So R stands for... ?

hehe missed

5:28 PM
lol !

never used ogre

Object oriented graphics engine

but OGRE stores too much data, more than actually needed
what if I don't want to name my objects?

the examples for OGRE like the golf course images sure look nice

bb in 30mins

5:30 PM
@Gajet If you don't want to name, OGRE will give a random name for them, you actually have no choice. Yeah, that's bad, but nothing i would care too much.
and btw, irrlicht is nice, was the first real 3d engine i came across

@Gajet, Give me a ping when you're back. :)

do i need libraries when i develope games using java?

But if you need something more mature for long time projects, ogre seems a better option, as it's design is more open for extensions, it's more OO, and all that.

@WilliamMindWorXMariager since I'm still here
ping what?

@Liukas Usually LWJGL should be enough

5:32 PM
@Liukas You can make simple 2D games with Java's standard libraries

dinner called, but it seems it was not ready yet

@GustavoGtoknu thanks ;)

@Gajet You know, let me know when you're back. :P I need you to test my game real quick. :)

@Damir thank you 2

Switched out the networking engine, I wanna see how bad it's going to be with something as horrid as your connection. :P

5:32 PM
Btw guys, what do you think about the D language for game developing?

@GustavoGtoknu agreed, OGRE is well dsigned

@GustavoGtoknu Didn't know about this

@GustavoGtoknu is it hard to install LWJGL? :)

It seems a managed C++ but it lack libraries, what make me fear about trying it.

5:34 PM
@WilliamMindWorXMariager I'm still thinking about adding a new entry to my jobs list, by the way

@Gajet, legeria.net/legeria-latest-debug.zip Let me know when you have a minute. :)

run your server

what do you have against unity? ogre is real mess in comparison

It's running. :)

5:35 PM
@gajet imgur.com/yUzuN this is what happens ( i don't know why your visualizer doesn't load? )

@dave it doesn't show anything

yeh i dunno why =/ all i changed was sdata?

@Kikaimaru At least Ogre lets you manage what you're doing.

@GustavoGtoknu what do you mean

@Gajet, Invalid password.

5:36 PM
@Kikaimaru Unity hides lots of stuff :P

@Gajet, Better.

seems I used a wrong password

Server hasn't crashed yet. :D

but I can't see anything loaded

Not that it's bad at all, but people usually just "develop" games blindly on it without knowing what they're actually doing.

5:37 PM
Still not? Might take a bit of time.

nope not showing anything

@GustavoGtoknu are you also using it? :)

Did it show that it received messages in the console window?
Oh wait

but I have a concurrent 3KBps upload and download

It shouldn't show, I disabled those messages. Silly me.

5:38 PM
@Liukas nope. I prefer to manage my own stuff.

NetworkComponent::Update

@GustavoGtoknu exactly that is my problem, you start having a problem with your game,
and you can't possibly find out what is going wrong

@Gajet, you didn't get a message containing a GUID?

@Liukas I'm trying it out. It's much faster to explore game design ideas then to roll your own engine

@WilliamMindWorXMariager I still got a corn flower blue screen, with all those messages in log

5:41 PM
@Damir LWJGL?

@Liukas Oh, I thought you were asking about unity

@Gajet, Well, thanks, I'll fiddle some more with it. :)

@Damir :)

did you notice anything?

@Gajet i dunno why your visualizer isn't showing theres no console error =/

5:42 PM
Ah, i thought you were asking about unity too.

@Dave visualizer code does not run at all

if that's the case, no, im not using LWJGL because im on C++, but if i were on java i would surely use it!

@GustavoGtoknu what are you using in C++?

@Gajet it does here though : jsfiddle.net/8nyYH/68 but the sdata is old sdata from week or 2 ago
i changed sdata and now in the update 70 and then it don't work =/

@GustavoGtoknu Have you done a component system in C++?

5:43 PM
@Gajet OGRE and OIS, still have to decide something for sound, but i'll probably go with OpenAL
@Damir One of my current tasks on the TODO :D

@GustavoGtoknu if you are not too far away in developing path have a pick at esenthel
it's much more easier to use, and let's you check/edit everything behind the scene
but you need to pay for more advanced features

I already have around 6k lines, So i think it's not a choice anymore D:

dinner again called!
bbl 30mins

@Gajet Esenthel's PR :D

cya
Im going to download esenthel, maybe i can use it later for other projects :)

5:47 PM

@GustavoGtoknu instaled it

@Dave What are you and Gajet working on? Some kind of pathfinding if I remember correctly?

yup
but it currently is not always finding the shortest route - but other times it does

MCA died... )=

@Gajet you can't use custom shaders with the free version of Esenthel? ):

5:54 PM
Finally we need to setup the native component of LWJGL
i set it to C:/windows

i think he is afk @GustavoGtoknu
