@AnkitSharma I don't really know how to compare Brave and Frozen. I didn't really connect with either, but for different reasons. But they're both nice family films.

And Brave did start off as a twist on princess movies, but then veered off into a completely different (and IMO trite) direction. It's such an odd change of focus that it feels like someone else took over it half way through.

@NapoleonWilson sigh Because most of the films that I'd really class as princess movies also adhere to a number of tropes and cliches that Frozen went about deconstructing. That puts Moana, a film about a princess, in an odd position where those tropes can no longer be used. As such, it evolves and becomes a post-modern princess movie where those tropes are no longer present. My argument here isn't that Moana is a princess movie, it's that Frozen means that it can't be a princess movie.

The problem simply is that if one film works against the confines of the genre, that doesn't invalidate all other films that try to adhere to the genre. A film isn't a bad film just because it chooses to serve a genre that a film before it did not.

The fact that Frozen might have deconstructed the princess genre doesn't invalidate all possible straight-forward cliché princess films that come after it, or make them autmatically bad films just because that opted against going with that supposed deconstruction.

Judging a film by other unrelated films is just not so good a thing.

@NapoleonWilson It kind of does. If a film can call out a bunch of tropes while also delivering a really good movie, it's going to be virtually impossible for a new film to use those tropes in earnest without seeming dated.

If Moana was a cliché of a princess film, it might very well be a good one at that. A single effin' film just cannot destroy or invalidate a whole genre and claiming it can is a bit out of line. You can laud Frozen for breaking out of the genre, but you can't blame Moana for not doing so.
