You have more than one huge datas? I think you need MongoDB, I hear it's web-scale. — ta.speot.is 25 mins ago
That's what you need with millions of data :)

So, I've got a db instance on my local machine (\dev) and I want to connect to it from a server (let's call it redgate - running sql compare of course) on the network. How can I connect to my local machine? I've got the instance running with TCP enabled and named pipes, and I have no firewall running on my local machine (I live inside a intranet, why do I need firewalls, seriously)
What would be good reasons Redgate can't talk to the local db on my machine when it can talk to the instance on other servers? And I think I just figured it out ...
connecting to \\cole's machine and not \\cole's machine\dev ... I win a cookie if that's it, right?
didn't work
agent and browser are both running locally

You don't need agent and browser. Without advertising the SQL Server instance, you can still reach it
On an elevated command prompt, run this netstat -a -n -b -p TCP and check the SQL Server port
From the remote server, try telnet COLE 1433 or whatever the portnum was, and assuming your machine was named COLE
It's also more than likely you forgot to enable TCP IP for remote connections. Start->Microsoft SQL Server 2008/2012->Configuration Tools->SQL Server Configuration Manager
Under SQL Server Network Configuration->Protocols for MSSQLSERVER and on the right, TCP/IP: Disabled

that'n?
Or anothern'?

Did telnet work? If it did, then the client is not using TCP/IP, probably named pipes. In which case you can use CLICONFG.EXE to coerce

there's also this'n
@孔夫子 it's sql-compare, I'm pretty sure they know what they're doing there ;-) but yeah, I tried the TCP:server\instance hack as well on that
sqlserver is on 1433

4:48 AM
dum dee dee dar. I had a life as another comment

@孔夫子 in Sql Compare ...
in the servername\instance field

Well... does telnet work anyway? To verify the socket connection between server and local?

I didn't try that, coworker was doublechecking things on redgate to make sure I didn't pebkac
meanwhile I'm just truncating data because all I really need is a schema compare
we're on the cusp of being able to use some automated updating tooling and we have to get everything to that last stage of baseline
@孔夫子 to answer this question, no, if I'm going to 1433
sorry, had to get back around to that >.<

A: Extend PostgreSQL by index structure, data types, retrieval types, etc. with Java?

Chris TraversThe answer here is "it's complicated." You can actually go quite far with a procedural language (including pl/java) but you are never going to get quite the flexibility you can get with C. What is fundamentally missing is being able to do proper indexing support in PL/Java. For quite a bit mor...

but what's up

6:56 AM
@JackDouglas What pl/java basically does is allow you to wrap Java code inside the stored procedure framework. I could probably explain that better. Clarifying it

A: How to create a database for unknown kinds of data?

Paddy CarrollDont use MySQL, a relational database is not used for the solution of this type of problem. Use a document or NoSQL database such as MongoDB or possibly RavenDB on windows.

I responded with

Having an issue with FKs, I googled the issue and got pointed to an answer on DBA.SE! Awesome! The answer is exactly what I needed. Go to upvote and get message "You can't vote for your own post."

@DerekDowney I think they are angry because I am not JW

@bluefeet That's curious. You don't have a spicy language, you're even too maternal with some of those idiots.

@Marian I don't know what is going on
@Marian Thanks for the maternal comment, I guess I need to be nastier to people.

@bluefeet hahaha, that question seems to fit JW so perfectly
the op user is Error2

2:13 PM
@bluefeet I love how Aaron is editing the q and removing that specific error tag.

JNK
JW always adds that stupid tag

@JNK Yeah, but it's a cat and mouse run.. Not sure how much patience there for Aaron, 'cause JW doesn't seem to stop.

He is the top user

But I think that in this particular case it is actually relevant.....but, I hate it that he always add that tag, so, good that it was removed :-)

JNK
2:18 PM
because he makes all the questions have that tag
I think we should burninate that tag
2

He got irritated with me awhile back because he created a and I removed all questions from that tag because it was totally unnecessary.

@bluefeet really?, he did actually created that tag?
that's ridiculous. And so transparent that he only want badges on stupid, over specific, invented tags

@Lamak Yes, I was like um just use and .

JNK
I'm taking it to meta

@JNK please link to my question

Q: What is considered incorrect tagging?

bluefeetLet me start by saying that I know that there is gamification in receiving tag-badges. Users* want the badges to show they have skills in certain areas. I am active the sql tags and I have seen an increase in what I would call bad tagging. Examples of bad tagging, include adding select, MySQL e...

2:24 PM
@JNK beware of the duplicates, meta loooves to close as duplicate

Because it is straight incorrect tagging.

I wonder if I could automate the untagging of questions...

@bluefeet of course...I mean, come on....don't be such a badge whore

@billinkc that could be a useful script :)

I wish we could get an official stance from SE on the use of tags. JW only adds tags because of the gamification of the tag badges.

2:29 PM
@bluefeet well you've got to understand that gamification is what moves some of us. It's just human behavior. Although he just adds stupid tags, it's not very harmful to just see yourself over another guy.
He's just creating a list where he's the first one :-).
Dumb and funny..from my point.

@Marian But the point of the tags is to be helpful for users in finding solutions. The tag is completely pointless and most of the errors are too localized questions anyway. I would guess that 95% of those errors are syntax issues that will not help anyone

@Marian So, we should create a tag that merges multiple tags that already exists?
somthing like sql-server-group-concat

JNKThis is discussed a little bit here as well. The tag mysql-error-1064 is on almost 1000 questions at this point. It is also useless. @bluefeet I didn't say it's useful. That particular error I'd even remove as I never saw it helpful. I just said he's behaving like he wants something more than easy points. He also wants easy badges.

@billinkc do you know the equivilant of Alt+enter in SSIS for text boxes?

so they are telling us now that we either need to merge it into another tag or delete them individually
personally I'd say merge it with like mysql

@JNK I don't take life too seriously, so I'd build a new tag each day. And if I'd be one of SO's programmers I'd mix people's images and points randomly :-).

I could do the query for them

it's 500 to rate limit rep transfers
otherwise it could be abused to say give someone privileges
