Q: Loading XML documents to Oracle 11g DB with control file

user2305461folks: This is my first post here and would greatly appreciate your help. I am using Oracle 11g XML database and trying to load XML documents to this DB with a control file and sqlldr utility. All these XML files have an element that contains a date string with time stamp (and the letter T in ...

You should consider purchasing an edition without these limitations. If the budget does not allow that, perhaps switching to a less expensive product may be an option, too? — ypercube 30 secs ago
sound advice :)

@Marian haha, thnx.

is there a limit of points for new users to upvote/mark as answer?
Well, no problem. Though, usually, thanks on this site are delivered using the Upvote feature (the up arrow near the answer) if the answer is useful, or, if it solves your problem completely, even using the Mark as the answer (the Checkmark near the answer) :-). See more here, in the FAQ. — Marian 55 mins ago

@Marian you need rep to upvote though not to accept

the user thanked us both, but didn't up-vote either..not sure how that goes.
@JackDouglas ah, cool

@JackDouglas thanks, forgot that :-)

@Marian: I'm the original poster. Sorry, no.

@quanta I was joking, don't worry :).

@Marian: do you have any idea about this?

9:17 AM
@quanta no idea on mysql, TBH. Though, if you've got some patience, maybe Rolando or some other MySQL power user will be able to spot the question and reply.
You should post this as a question of your own. Please describe in more a detail the system you got. DB size and usage, RAM and disk configuration etc. — vonPryz 26 mins ago

Gregorychown mysql:mysql -R /etc/mysql /var/lib/mysql && cd /var/lib/mysql && rm -f ib_logfile* && service mysql restart || service mysql restart Try it, guaranteed to be working [tested on Debian 6]

It is flagged NAA, but perhaps it is just poor?

@JackDouglas It's just a poor answer
he doesn't give explanation of what he's doing, but basically it's the same thing as the accepted answer...remove the old files :) Also, his method is not safe. You can't remove the logfiles while mysql is still running

@dezso did that a year ago in here :P Also got retweeted a billion times :)

Q: Updating a table with more than 850 million rows of data

RajI have been tasked with writing an update query to update a table with more than 850 million rows of data. Here are the table structures: Source Tables : CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SourceTable1]( [ProdClassID] [varchar](10) NOT NULL, [PriceListDate] [varchar](8) NOT NULL, [PriceListVe...

that clustering key for table SourceTable1 is a little big, ain't it?!

2:24 PM
@gbn: for that question, the clustering key is almost as big as a single row itself (the PK excludes 2 tinyint columns, but includes all big ones). Won't it cause troubles to create an index for that table? :) First idea comes to space needed for such an index.

gbn
@Marian I covered that later about bad datatypes
But yes, another index will be huge because of the wide clustered key.

@gbn yes, but I still think you'd throw a warning for the space

gbn
ah true
Will add one

Q: is it possible to commit two stored procedure's transaction in another procedure but it is not nested

2:29 PM
@Marian np, I kinda stopped thinking when I saw the bad datatypes. So many red flags in the tables and code
You have shamed me into a better answer :)

@gbn Uhmmm, the OP has already added the index and didn't say anything about the space.

@bluefeet how's your dad doing?

@FreshPrinceOfSO he is doing well. We are back in CT now to get him settled. Thanks for asking

gbn
@Marian My feeling is that he wants performance, and space does not matter too much. I would hope with 850 million rows that he has plentiful good disk space

@gbn I've already upvoted it, because it made perfect sense. Though I considered a big red flag also the space.. (implications to tlog backups, replication..)
@gbn If I'd be the OP, I'd probably try to persuade the owner of the DB to change the clustering key even through begging, bribe..whatever works :).

gbn
@FreshPrinceOfSO This is not safe for concurrency: 2 concurrent queries may get the same MAX value and you get duplicates. Unless you use sp_getapplock or table locks etc = performance killer
@bluefeet is that good or bad or ugly?

2:38 PM
@gbn that query just looks ugly

@gbn not sure, but probably a bit of all of them

Are you sure it's not something as simple as the total length of your execution string? In all your examples, the longer one fails while the shorter one succeeds. How long is your overall string, and how does that compare to the length of your variable? — Bob 3 hours ago

ok all ... personal question/advice request
we're selling our home
we have 4 offers
2 have been eliminated
we're down the the last two
one is a family and they're quite excited to be in our house but have to sell their own home first (they're under contract).
the second is an I-Banker (UBS) with a cash-only offer that is 5k above the other offer ... and it's cash so there's no real bank worries and we don't have to wait for them to sell off their current home.
emotionally drawn to the family
intellectually drawn to the cash
what to do????

@swasheck go with the bank
easy for me to say, since I've never met that family, but I really think that it's the best advice for you

yeah ... asking random folks on an internet chat board isn't the tipping point for our decision-making, but it's a fun distraction from dba work :)
@Lamak we've not met either of them. i just facebook/linkedin stalked them :)

4:06 PM
@swasheck really?, then you are a very sensitive guy (I knew it)

@Lamak i actually have a heart - it just takes the right appeal. family is one of those appeals :)

@swasheck good to know ;-). And my opinion is that you should take the cash. Are you aware if the family has potential buyers for their house already?, who knows how many issues could there be before they have the money on their pockets?

4:20 PM
@swasheck Can you afford to pass on 5k? If so, follow your heart. Just realize their is no guarantee once your house becomes theirs they won't love it as you and your family has. Nothing stopping them from trashing it or turning it around and selling it to a scumbag in N months.
And if you can afford to pass on 5k, mind spotting me 3k?
:D

@billinkc hah. when you put it that way ...
@billinkc we dont love the house ... we've been trying to get out since day 2
apparently the cash offer has a really nice family, too
but they're from California so i fee like i'm contributing to the takeover

If you really want the family to get it, both of you should lean on your real estate agents to reduce their cut of the sale price such that you get the 5k in your pocket

@billinkc nah. they're both families :)
i feel better
plus the first family has too many contingencies ... either we or they would have to move twice

@swasheck That'll be 2k plus my retainer of 3k

@billinkc how about a beer after the next DSSUG meeting. if you're not there, i'll have yours for you

JNK
links in here are fine
chat is a lot less formal
sorry to close the question like that, but we really don't do discussions on the site

@blacksensei the link is perfectly fine....though we can't really promise that your questions would be answered completely (taking into account that there are entire books about this)

feel free to give reference to resources, am here to learn. thanks for your responses so far ^_^
i just want to know a whole lot about it before stepping in that field, i just want to be able to know whether it's the best path for me. unofficially am not a senior developer but that position is a senior engineer in the engineering operations so it's more like a little promotion

JNK
honestly I think it may be too broad even to get a valuable discussion out of
These are REALLY broad topics

6:22 PM
1.why would someone choose to become a system and database administrator ?

there are at least 4 specific questions

This is going to be personal and vary from person to person.
The resone I became a dba at my last job was because that had no-one else who could.

@Zane that is fine, i would have to make a decision out of everything i am able to gather as information

It helped that I enjoyed the work.
2. Is also going to be hard to answer. I could have a gigantic laundry list of attributes it requires.
Read a lot of blogs. There is an obscene amount of free information on how to be a good sys admin/dba.
3
Always keep learning and Automate everything that way you can never forget to do something.

@Zane are you saying that's a personal question?

6:28 PM
3.Depends on who you ask. A lot of people seem to thing noSQL is going to be the hot new thing but I have yet to be convinced.
4. Bret Ozars website. SQLPerformance.com DBA.se SQLSkills.com
@swasheck nah just a gigantic heap of opinions.

@Zane somebody should cluster it ---- for performance

My brain has a notoriously bad query optimizer.
It's safe to say it's not exactly ACID complient either.

thanks @zane for you time, i also think nosql will take over one day.
nothing on system administration and deployment? feel free to share or point to resources thanks. it's basically 7 PM here , so i will have to continue this discussion from home.Leaving office thanks

6:52 PM
does there exist a good repo of beneficial XEs?

@blacksensei You are probably alone in this room thinking that.
7

@blacksensei I highly doubt noSQL will take over it is very much a tool that is crafted for a specific purpose. That purpose is never going to replace RDBMS's

@Zane it already had one shot back in the day (see: ISAM)

@swasheck well I wouldn't necessarily count it out as a tool 100%. I just don't think as some seem to that it's the messiah come to rescue us from RDBMS structure.

7:07 PM
Yos.
WTF is with this guy. Posts terrible advice and then down-votes me for correcting him.

@blacksensei My answers:

1. because he/she likes troubleshooting and configuration. You like a lot of scripting, even classic programming (but maybe not to that extensive level).

2. lots of time invested in learning (just like in any job that you want to do well). Learn to troubleshoot and to automate.

3. Big Data.. it's hot, but not necessarily a threat to the DB world.

4. Search the site, there were few questions related to good resources that survived mods' power :). When you learned enough, try to teach others, like the good ones do. Get and give.

A: What does 'reference..' mean in SQL syntax?

paulsm4That's T-SQL (Microsoft-specific) syntax indicating the table's name and owner. The default owner is "dbo". The default database is whichever one you're currenting "using". Here are more details: http://examplesql.com/sqlserver-t-sql-tsql/dbo-dotdot-syntax/ SELECT * FROM AdventureWork...

@camelbrush this is the correct answer. i'd recommend removing your downvote as it's not the answerer's responsibility to divine your schema out of thin air. i'd ask your local DBA to give the final answer on that. i would say that they should give you permissions to view it, but based on your comment here, i don't blame them for withholding it in the first place. — swasheck 9 secs ago

I also did not down-vote. But the answer was not correct as originally posted; it was not valid syntax. This is something Management Studio can tell you even if you don't have the user's schema. But I suspect it's something you'll never try to do. In any case, if you post untested code in a hurry, and it's incorrect, please don't say people are ganging up on you. The whole point of this site is to help people solve their problems without also introducing problems you've created. — Aaron Bertrand 8 secs ago

7:45 PM
@swasheck what does that have to do with wasting time plowing through crappy search results? :-)

JNK
Also is it just me or is it truly pathetic that MS is PAYING PEOPLE TO USE BING?

@AaronBertrand i'm glad you asked. i was thinking the same thing. i guess it has to do with my base salary, and disposable income. they are crappy results, you're right.

JNK
I'm sure it's for marketing materials "Bing runs 12 million searches a day" what they don't tell you is that 8 million of those are being bought

@AaronBertrand Would it be safe to say that in these results (the varchar to nvarchar) would be the same if the conversion was reversed?

@FreshPrinceOfSO oh, sorry :P.

7:47 PM
@AaronBertrand however, most of my questions have to do with MS stuff anyway ... and one popular blogger i know did some evaluation and noted that it seemed like Bing just might bias their results toward MS products

@Marian Luckily you get to ruin my day once a week. Anything more, I have to charge.

JNK
The Google Reward is good search results

@swasheck ok, but what kind of searching do you do where you Google would give you results for Oracle or MySQL? I always include +"sql server"

@FreshPrinceOfSO No worries, let me go check @swasheck's bing points. Maybe he'd share some just for you.

@AaronBertrand well ... yeah ... but ... i mean ... that's what i heard

7:49 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO I am not sure I understand the question. His post is pretty long, which results do you think would be the same, that didn't include conversions in both directions?

you guys are all a bunch of poopy-heads

@swasheck well hey. If you want Microsoft to pay you in peanuts to use an inferior product, go nuts. Who are we to judge?

@AaronBertrand Sorry. The article shows that a nvarchar parameter converted to a varchar column has horrible performance.. would this be true if it was a varchar parameter being converted to a nvarchar column?

@FreshPrinceOfSO oh I think I understand now. No, I don't think that's safe to say - IIRC the particular implicit conversion overhead here occurs in one direction but not the other. He maybe should have included that to be unambiguous (though I'll admit I haven't tested, and there may still be overhead just not as much, I'm not sure).

@AaronBertrand well that's just like, you opinion, man.

7:52 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO And I'm not sure I want to be sure, either. The point of the article is to avoid implicit conversions altogether as a basic strategy, not to only avoid very specific types of implicit conversion.

JNK
@FreshPrinceOfSO varchar will always fit into nvarchar with no issues

@AaronBertrand That's helpful thanks

JNK
nvarchar shoved back into varchar may require some fancy stuff for the unicode characters if they are present

@swasheck I use bing on accident sometimes. Since I can't use chrome or firefox every once in a while I type a question into the live search bar.

i'm not saying that i prefer bing's results ... i'm just saying that i use them for any extra bump in free gift cards

7:53 PM
I'm imidiately made sad and then switch to google.

@swasheck I don't think you're allowed to use bing in this chatroom. It really angers people.

JNK
With bing's makeover I think it's kind of an uncanny valley issue
The uncanny valley is a hypothesis in the field of robotics and 3D computer animation, which holds that when human replicas look and act almost, but not perfectly, like actual human beings, it causes a response of among human observers. The "valley" refers to the dip in a graph of the comfort level of humans as a function of a robot's human likeness. The term was coined by the robotics professor Masahiro Mori as Bukimi no Tani Genshō (不気味の谷現象) in 1970. The hypothesis has been linked to Ernst Jentsch's concept of the "uncanny" identified in a 1906 essay, "On the Psychology of t...

@JNK FYI this particular problem exists even if no Unicode characters are present in the entire system.

@Zane Using bing on accident? That's like getting a girl pregnant on accident

JNK
it looks a lot like google but it's not
@AaronBertrand Yeah I know, but the engine has to CHECK
There's no need to check for characters that won't work in NVARCHAR from a varchar source
it can be a straight transfer

7:56 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO clearly. all kinds of elitist snobbery in here. i feel like i'm in the proletariat ... enjoy it your bourgeoisie scum
:)

@JNK yep just clarifying that it doesn't matter whether Unicode are actually present.

@swasheck we're the top 1% of SO here.

JNK
@AaronBertrand gotcha. I was just pointing out that there are extra checks that are likely required going from n->v but not v->n

@FreshPrinceOfSO ... and me

JNK
