So, are these guys just plotting against the whole community? worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/73658/…

'these guys'?

@Secespitus I VtC to close your question because it is to vague. If you can reword your question to be more specific then please do so :) LOL

@EnigmaMaitreya Please do so, I just thought your conversation with Darkshine is interesting.

Given the history of the poster it was made clear that any post on their part now is simply going to be closed. It has become personal. And no I am not waging war on World Building ... I disagree with the .... interpreting the rules to achieve one goals. Bad enough but when it is asymmetrical vs symmetrical then it is just games.

@EnigmaMaitreya I didn't VTC for personal reasons. Asking about the real world is off-topic

9:37 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya I can't even vote to cloes and I didn't react in any way to that question.

you can answer with the real world, but you can't ask specifically about the real world with no changes

@Secespitus you chose to drag my message into here and now you do not want to face it?

@EnigmaMaitreya also, I don't think most users are as vindictive as you think. There's a general sense of what is and is not on-topic, but as long as you plead your case and are willing to accept advice the system seems to work

@DaaaahWhoosh - Shush you did not place yourself in that group yesterday so I am speaking generally not specifically about anyone person. The question asked is easy to wrap and if it is easy to wrap it then why bother with the "not relevant" fig leaf."? Ha ha the poster's reply to me was rather telling and worthy of immediately forgetting so I don't hold it against him :)

@EnigmaMaitreya can you define what you mean by 'wrap'?

9:44 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh I have 9 minutes to devote to this then I must leave. I can not contest your assertion "There's a general sense of what is and is not on-topic" I question is that subjective sense consistent with what is a) best for the forum b) being implemented fairly or is it being implemented based on "Followers"
Bah sorry my time is up ....

@JDługosz I'll try to do so later. I've been working for a few hours, and I think I've proved that relevant manifolds of genus 0 (i.e. without "holes") will lead to convergence, and rigorously proved that any two-dimensional surface with any number of holes will also lead to convergence. I'd just need to tie the two together, and I think I'd have a very tight proof for a number of exotic geometries.

Wrap - to enclose something - Question Is Blah Blah this EH OFF TOPIC Wraper Question in the context of X is Blah Blah Blah this? Oh Ok now it is ok
Later

later... but I'll keep responding for when/if you come back

Here's my explanation of why any two-dimensional surface with any holes, points or other weird things (save singularities - damn!) should lead to finite gravitational forces:
Whoops, not quite there.

@EnigmaMaitreya I think in terms of A), it's hard to know what's 'best' for the site, so we tend to go back and forth on it. Some people want to answer anything, other people want to force users to ask better questions and provide better answers so that the site can have more quality than quantity.

Is SE about making friends or not I think a number of people and SE and SE are not on the same page. COat on Leaving Fun I had wanted a 2nd round on editing maybe if your willing Q: Who owns an edited piece of work on a forum such as this

in terms of B), for the most part I haven't seen much examples of users specifically holding grudges against other users. What I have seen is users who lose all trust in new users who are unaware of how things work around here and unwilling to learn. If new users insist that they are right, even when veteran users tell them they're wrong, that is a red flag for pretty much everyone, but everyone deals with it differently
@EnigmaMaitreya SE is not about making friends, nor is it about making enemies, it is for asking questions and providing answers. If users post low-quality content and actively resist the advice of others, that implies that they are going to have a negative effect on the quality of the site, and its ability to provide high-quality questions and answers
the thing people tend to forget is that Stack Exchange isn't really supposed to be a forum; it's a question and answer site. On a forum, users can be bad at things, and it's fine because everyone will just talk over them.
here, anyone can read all the questions and answers that have ever been posted, and are encouraged to do so. What they see will define how they ask and answer if they ever choose to do so, so there's a real incentive for promoting high-quality content
the Internet has a certain sense of "you can do whatever you want" but on Stack Exchange that's not what we're about. We don't care what you do on other sites, but on this site we have rules, we have standards, and we have goals. Moderation can, at times, be harsh, but I've found more often than not it is done to uphold the quality of the site rather than for pettier reasons
I don't know, I mean I get the idea that people think what they're bringing to the table is useful, and when people tell them to get rid of it it doesn't make sense. But the way I see it, this is not a general-use forum, this is a Q&A site on a specific topic, and if we waver from that goal then we'll lose something in the process.
you can't just go everywhere in the world and change it to suit your needs. Humans have tried that, and history says that was a bad idea. There's a specific culture here, and if you try to come in and destroy that culture, then people have a right to oppose you.

and even if you don't accept that, keep in mind this is a meritocracy. Within reason, if you do things and enough people like those things, you will be given special privileges that will allow you to more easily shape the site to your will. But you have to earn that; you can't come in on day 1 and expect everyone to fall in line behind you
anyway, I think I've pretended I'm working for long enough, time for me to go home. Anyone who reads this rant, please tell me how I'm wrong.

I agree with @DaaaahWhoosh with the exception of this chat-room being considerably more flexible, where people talk about whatever and it's perfectly acceptable to have a laugh (How? By pinging @James, and writing him a Haiku, for amusement's sake) - although there are still rules to be followed (be nice and I think(?) that's pretty much it)

@JDługosz Let me apologize in advance for my answer's lack of readability. I'll edit it tomorrow, as well as the logic about the speed of gravity not being an issue.
My first attempt at a problem like this is seldom the quickest way to do things.
@DaaaahWhoosh I agree with pretty much everything you wrote.

@DaaaahWhoosh I just want to say that I agree with everything you said. I would star the whole block of posts if I could, but that would probably be overkill

Q: Move good answers on a duplicate to the original question

kingledionInspired by this question, and partially addressed in this meta post. First off, the question linked isn't closed, and may never be, so this is more of a general question cum proposal. Should there be a feature allowing us (probably meaning the moderators) to move good answers from questions m...

I might well be wrong but does anyone else feel like the kind of discussion DaaaahWhoosh had above are becoming more common? Seems like there have been about three quite recently when there used to be months between each.

@Alexander - the question was deleted, but to reply to your comment:

***"Do not kill, do not steal"*** are not social justice, they are commands.

***"I will not steal because it infringes on people's right to property"*** is a moral belief. Social justice requires such a framework of moral beliefs and law to function, but they are not equivalent. For example, during the French revolution the lower class slaughtered the upper class in the name of what you might call social justice. But although in their eyes they were "just", in reality they murdered men, women, and children simply because
@DaaaahWhoosh very well stated. Bravo.
@Bellerophon the natives are restless ;-)
night, y'all

1 hour later…
11:55 PM
@Mithrandir24601 yeah, I mean there's a certain expectation that we're here to coordinate managing the site, but there's definitely a lot more room for conversations in the meantime
@Bellerophon it feels like a coincidence to me, at least for now. Some day maybe I'll make a bunch of SEDE queries to tell for sure
