@Cindy Cedar Point sounds stereotypically like the place where all the teens go to make out.

A: What is the best variety of rice or preparation of rice to use in soup?

IntrepidSuccessI've found that the most consistent way is to use short grain rice that is prepared much like it is in Indian cuisine. I was taught to rinse it repeatedly until the standing rinse water runs clear. That seems to remove most of the starch that causes that sticky breakdown. Also, I've found that ...

This person is suggesting using short grain rice which seems like a bad idea
aren't short grain rice more glutinous aka breaks apart more and turn into a sticky mess more easily
or am i misunderstanding something

My gut feeling would be long grain rice and two pots.

Jay
I always add rice into the soup at the very end
which works fine for eating at the time the soup is made
but i always make extra

@Stephie Ditto. It works.

Jay
and its always too thick after its been sitting around with the rice

How do you do the box thing?

Jay
7:04 PM
box thing?

@Cindy But ist sounds too simple for an answer...

@Stephie Sometimes the simplest things are the best.
@Jay Like how you put the question. Or how you put wiki stuff.

Jay
oh its automatic

I think I've done it before but I can't remember how.

Jay
just put the link

Jay
doesnt work for all links
try going to one of the questions and posting the url in here

Q: Should dry salami develop green mould?

ShaktalI recently (5 weeks ago), purchased a set of dry salami from a food festival. I kept them in the plastic bag that they came in; however, when I recently checked them, they were completely covered with furry-looking green mould. My understanding of dry salami is that it is supposed to be able to...

Jay
Yay you did it :D
usually works for wiki, amazon stuff and question/answers from SO
pictures urls usually work

Thanks! I thought I was missing something but I didn't know that it didn't work for everything.

XKCD
How's the new job?

Jay
7:13 PM
The carrier pidgeon with her laptop is lost
so she cant officially start yet

@Jay Actually my official start date was Monday. >.<

Jay
@Cindy haha yea i know. but since no laptop you cant really start doing anything :P
i cant vpn into the comcast network unless im on my work laptop also

@Cerberus Well, so far it's been pretty stress free. I've answered two e-mails and sent a couple of forms in.
Not sure when the carrier pigeon us coming. And go figure, I haven't even gotten a welcome e-mail! And no phone calls.

Ah OK.
No welcome of any kind? That's weird.
They just told you, you're hired, and that's it?
So this job is all done from home?

@Cerberus No, after the verbal offer, they sent a formal offer and I accepted it and then did all of the new hire paperwork and turned it in.
@Cerberus The office part is from home as it is field based. Other than that I will be in the field working with my reps or heading up projects.
@Cerberus Way weird. Kind of like the hiring process.

Jay
7:22 PM
Is there a number you can call or email you can send to just to let them know heads up that the latop is late?

@Jay They know it. Otherwise I would have some direction as to how to proceed.

Jay
do you have access to your work email already?

@Jay Nope.

Jay
im just afraid they might have sent you stuff on the work email and not realize that you dont have your laptop
because you are basing the fact that they havent contacted you as your basis that they know you dont have your laptop

The couple of e-mails I've received have come to my personal e-mail.

Jay
7:26 PM
when i started at comcast, i got emails both to my personal email and to my work email

@Jay Yeah, I've had that happen, too.

@Cindy Ah, I see.
But things will become clearer as you get to work with your colleagues, right?

Jay
i do hope the laptop get there soon though
im not a particularly patient person so i would be going bananas by now waiting for a package

@Jay, would you appreciate an answer as in my comment above, or ist this too simple for you?
(Only if nobody writes one, as I won't have time until tomorrow.)

Jay
@Stephie Simple answers aren't always bad ;)

7:29 PM
@Jay Normally I would be. But when you look back at the hiring process, this follows due course.

Jay
@Cindy haha if anything, this whole process has helped you develop this absurd thing called "patience"

@Jay Hey - as long as they pay me I can have patience!

Jay
@Cindy haha thats true

@Cerberus One can only hope!
I can see where this could become a nightmare if the job gets intense or super fast-paced, though.
And it's bound to at some point.

@FaheemMitha, re. sandwich bread: I don't really do that, those fluffy softish breads are just weird to my German palate. I'm used to breads that would often be described as "artisan" or "rustic", have a crust and need chewing.
One anecdote: We had an English teacher at our school (exchange program) and she was desperate. She described proper sandwich bread as: "You take the whole pack, squish it together, put it in your backpack and after the ride home take it out again. Where it will instantly expand to back to it's original form." But why not let us know what your definition of a "good bread" is?

Jay
7:38 PM
@Stephie that sounds like a sponge, not bread lol
@Cindy hopefully never too busy to visit us :D

@Jay true...

Jay
but it honestly depends on what im using the bread for

But she really had trouble chewing an ordinary bread crust.

Jay
when im using the bread for a side for soup or something, i prefer rustic bread
when im making a sandwich i prefer softer bread

@Stephie That sounds very...interesting. Is that truly what the English eat?

7:40 PM
@Jay I don't anticipate that happening! That would be grounds for....... well, something.

@Cerberus Ask @ElendilTheTall. I haven't been over in, hm, eight years?
Ok guys, I'm off to bed. Long day ahead, including some important stuff at university. Wish me luck!

@Stephie Best of luck! Sleep tight!

Jay
@Stephie LOTS OF LUCK! XOXOXOX

@Stephie Sleep well!

Jay
i hope your husband doesnt mind the XOXOXOX

7:45 PM
Do tell what what's going on at your uni tomorrow.

@Jay relax, he can distinguish between real life and virtual reality ;-)
@Cerberus Will probably get my new project. Am kind of excited-curious. And I need to go now ;-)
But thanks, you are sooooo nice!

Jay
@Stephie Oh in that case. Hey baby, meet me behind the bleachers later tonight wink wink
What are your opinions on the new trend of watching people playing video games instead of playing the game yourself.

@Stephie Ohhh good luck!
@Jay I actually enjoy watching people play games sometimes.
But my brother and I always did that as teenagers.

Jay
@Cerberus ok

So it's not new fundamentally.
You don't?

Jay
7:52 PM
i think its not much different than watching sports compared to playing sports
was talking to someone yesterday and they were disparaging the youths of today for watching people play video games

@Jay That "new trend" has been around for as long as there have been video games.

Jay
@Jolenealaska more the fact that there are esports and championships and sites like twitch.com where people broadcast their streams.

(yes, I can remember "before there were video games")

@Jay Hmm interesting. I find watching sports completely and utterly boring. Playing them can be fun.

Jay
before it was more you watching your friend play video games

7:54 PM
@Jay Why did he find that act so very bad?

Jay
@Cerberus he was old
lol

Haha.

Jay
i think he just didnt understand

@Jay Or just random players at the mall.

But he should consider playing games very bad as well.

Jay
7:55 PM
@Jolenealaska the conversation with this older gentlemen was more about large scale broadcasted video game streams.
but i guess its the same thing just on a smaller scale because the technology wasnt in place yet

@Jolenealaska You and me both!

Jay
@Cerberus No he was saying how its was dumb to watch video game stream rather than playing yourself
so i dont think he was particularly against video games in general

Ah OK.
Did you also discuss watching a friend play sitting next to him?

Jay
@Cerberus haha no. it wasnt too indept of a conversation
it was at a bar and one of the tv's had a video game stream playing

Ah, that explains it.

8:15 PM
@Stephie You might find this of interest: cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/46242/…

Jay
8:27 PM
that was an interesting read
dang nabit
my water color papers arrived today but nobody home to recieve it

Oh!
Paper to paint on?

Jay
yes im plan on picking up painting again
used to paint during high school

Sounds like fun.
I am facing a strange issue.

Jay
i posted several water colors yesterday
@Cerberus oh yea?

Suddenly, my Regex won't watch the html of my page.
I didn't change anything.
But the page is in Wordpress, so perhaps Wordpress changed something on an update?
It's the only thing I can think of.

Jay
8:33 PM
possibly
but i find when i try to troubleshoot its always the thing i least expect to be the problem

Hehe.
This is what my Regex searches for but cannot find:
> /><a\s
This is where it should match, but doesn't:
> /></a><a

Jay
I bet you are feeling the >< right now

Haha what?

Jay
>< is a common emote meaning frustration

So it seems there is a </a> in the html that my Regex did not expect.
Oh aha.

8:36 PM
@Cerberus naturally, you can find shitty bread. you can also find good bread. likely the same as the rest of Western Europe.

But how could my Regex not expect the </a>, if it has worked flawlessly for many months?
@ElendilTheTall I'm sure. But Stephie seemed to suggest that a certain kind of very soft bread was normal.

Jay
okie im heading out now
thanks for chatting, ttyl all

All Chorleywood process bread is relatively soft compared to 'rustic' loaves

@Jay Bye! FYI, I found an old bit of html: the </a> usedn't to be there. So I was right: Wordpress changed something.

> usedn't
that's a new one

8:45 PM
Hi Sweetie.

@ElendilTheTall How would you spell it?

didn't used

My car has snapped the same damn belt again. My alt light came on on the way to bringing Marv to the airport. He looked. Sure enough - snapped belt again.

@Jolenealaska that's Ford for you

8:48 PM
The timing (as usual), sucks.

@ElendilTheTall You know I could not possibly write that...
@Jolenealaska That sucks. Is it expensive to fix?
@Jolenealaska By the way, did anything non-Platonic occur with Marv?

The part costs nothing and it's super simple. Unfortunately, I don't have the strength to do it.
I have a friend in the building who may be able to do it for me.
@Cerberus No, I played it off as still too sick, which wasn't exactly a lie, just a bit disingenuous.

9:04 PM
@Jolenealaska Ah okay, that sounds promising.
@Jolenealaska Hmm but why is that disingenuous? I thought that was really the reason?

It was, in part. Still being not completely well put me in a very "not interested" mood, but I played up that aspect of it. The fact is, I wouldn't have been in the mood even if I weren't sick.
The relationship has devolved into being about nothing but sex.
As a matter of fact, I have felt very "kept" for a while.
If I'm going to be in a relationship for nothing but the sex, I'm a stage in my life right now that I would expect it to be good sex.

9:29 PM
@Jolenealaska Ah, and it wasn't?
But is your relationship really only about sex? I mean, you spend quite some time together when he visits you?

@Cerberus we have dinner usually, and we spend the night together. He is rarely here for more than 20 or so hours at a time. Don't get me wrong, it hasn't always been that way, nor do I think that the sex is the only reason he continues to be invested.
It's convoluted though, we were friends before we fell into bed. Had we never started the affair, we would probably still be close friends. I'd also probably be good friends with his wife too.
The oil company that employs his services as an aircraft mechanic is pulling out of Barrow. He can't continue to lobby to come to Barrow (for two years every trip was potentially his last one), the next time I see him will be the last time.

@Stephie Well, the guy who we currently use as our GP said we should use brown bread for sandwiches. For whatever that is worth. And personally I do like somewhat heavy dense breads.
Crusts and stuff.
I used to get bread from a lady from a farm outside NC. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of it.

@FaheemMitha what are you trying to accomplish with bread?

@Jolenealaska Um, to eat it?
Maybe I'm not understanding your question.

9:45 PM
I haven't read the transcript, but I got the impression that you are asking a question about accomplishing something with the baking of bread.
so
What is it that you want to know?

@Stephie I don't really like "fluffy softish breads" either, but I think Elendil brainwashed me into thinking it was a good idea. I've very easily persuaded. I should probably be in a cult or something.
@Jolenealaska Elendil gave me a recipe for bread. Which is fine, and we're going to try to make it. As an experiment. But the recipe in question does not seem suitable for making bread for sandwiches. The current bread available here for sandwiches is terrible. So some non-terrible sandwich bread would be good.
So, I'm open to recipes for making sandwich bread. And I do like brown bread with a crust. Though off the top of my head I don't have good names for it.

Maybe I could ask the lady in NC to remind me what bread she used to make.
@Jolenealaska Thank you. Looking.

But that relates to what I consider to be "sandwich bread", even though that kind of sandwich bread is no longer my favorite for sandwiches.

@Jolenealaska Well, the bread does not have to be "sandwich bread". Just something that could actually be used in sandwiches. And the most important criteria is that it be square, I suppose.

9:50 PM
the answer to the question above (the link I posted) has to do with getting results not unlike Wonder Bread.

But I'm not exactly an expert on what would go well in a sandwich.
@Jolenealaska I don't know what that is, but I assume some kind of soft white bread.

The Pain de Mie pan is specifically for achieving square loaves. The thing about sandwiches is that there are no rules, the only rule is to eat what you like.
You don't even have to please anybody else at the table, you can each choose your own bread.

The honey oat one looks reasonable. And not too complicated.

It's not complicated at all, with a digital scale I can do it in my sleep.

@Jolenealaska Well, life has no rules. People try to tell you it does, but it doesn't really.

9:53 PM
I knew you're going to say something to that effect.
It is the very essence of what a sandwich is that you can make it exactly how you like it.

So, do I need a loaf pan? Or something else?

to achieve a square loaf, yes, you need a loaf pain.

I see something about a pain de mie pan.
@Jolenealaska Ok, check. Let me see if I can find anything online.

to achieve a perfectly square loaf you need a pain de mie pan.

@Jolenealaska Uh, what?

9:55 PM
yes, can you not see the pictures?

Loaf pan gets a surprising number of hits in Amazon India -> amazon.in/s/…
Any specific recommendations based on just the entries?
The Farberware looks reasonable at first glance.

Pullman pan, AKA Pain de Mie pan

@Jolenealaska Ok.
These ones look more pricey -> amazon.in/gp/search/…
What's the difference?

the lid. Specifically the USA Pans on that page are excellent. I have two.
I use them for a lot of things other than bread. They are of a perfect weight, and the recipes I use are specifically written for that type and size of pan.

@Jolenealaska by "that" page, you mean that last link?

10:07 PM
yes

The first and 8th items have USA in front of them, so I assume you are referring to those. But they're a little pricey for something I may end up not using.

The USA Pans pullman pan that is the first product if you click the last link you posted.

@Jolenealaska Right. That looks like probably an import.
I'll ask others here what they think. If they are durable, it might make sense.
We don't want to buy some piece of junk.

Gee, where do you think pans of the brand "USA pans" would be made?

How long does the Americoat thing last for?

10:10 PM
China, I guess. They make most of the Alaskan ulus gift stores here carry.

@Jolenealaska Names don't mean much.

Forever

it's the best nonstick surface I've ever encountered.

@Jolenealaska Ok. Thanks for the recommendation.

10:11 PM
I've never had anything stick, including lasagna which I often make in that pan.

yes, exactly that pan if you want a loaf of bread very much like Wonder Bread.

@Jolenealaska Ok.
Wow, that's some markup.

The recipes I linked to in that answer (the one I linked to above) are excellent recipes for use with that pain. again, that doesn't necessarily mean that the bread is better than any other bread.
I bought the pan for $20 on Amazon in 2011.

@Jolenealaska Ok. And is that pan a good pan for general purpose bread baking?
I mean, one can use it with any recipe?

10:18 PM
If the recipe uses a loaf pan, you can use that loaf pan. I have a lot of other loaf pans, but I only use that one unless I am baking a lot of loaves at once.

@Jolenealaska Ok. Thank you.

without the lid, it is just taller than normal loaf pans.

The price listed converts to approximately $60.
If the pan is not filled to the top, it doesn't matter, right?

That's too much.

@Jolenealaska Hmm so why not have sex with him one more time, then, if it is to be your last?

10:20 PM
@Jolenealaska Imports here are typically massively marked up.

@Cerberus I will, when he comes back through on his way home.

Ah OK.
I still don't get why you didn't want to this time, if it isn't because you were sick.

Had I not been sick, I would have slept with him. Just like I will when he comes through again. I don't look to it with any sense of anticipation. I have just been going through the motions for quite a while.

@Jolenealaska Shipping from Amazon directly gives much the same result.

I wouldn't pay that much for it. Look at this (if you can see the pictures):
0
A: Where can I buy a larger than usual 13x4x4 pull man pan?

JolenealaskaThere is a 16x4x4 inch pullman on Amazon (see James's answer and my comment). In another comment, I suggested a workaround. Well, curiosity piqued, I tried the workaround. I preheated the baking stone with the oven. This is an awesome recipe from King Arthur Flour and a go to, so I can say that...

I mentioned it to you because of the workaround, not the size.

10:38 PM
@Jolenealaska Ah okay, I thought you said there was another reason.
How are you feeling today?

@Jolenealaska Ok
Hi @Cerberus. Still awake, apparently.

Naturally.
So are you.

I just woke up. I should sleep more. 4.10 am here.

The other reason is just that I don't want to. Having just been sick gave me an excuse. Hence the the disingenuity.
@Cerberus OK, not great.

@Jolenealaska Hmm OK.
@Jolenealaska Okay, I see.
Any other people caught your eye lately?

10:50 PM
Not in that way, no. I am happy to have met so many neat people in this building, but I don't really have any interest in looking for a romantic relationship.
Some of that may have to do more with my age than anything else. I think I am finally officially menopausal. About damned time.
In retrospect, I am seeing a lot of the weirdness of the past summer as potentially related to "that time of life" too.
Not a cause, but a contributing factor.

1 hour later…
11:59 PM
@Jolenealaska Thank you for the advice/recommendations regarding bread/baking and the corresponding utensils.
