3:00 PM
@ElendilTheTall OK thanks. Although I have no idea what "dash" is...I'll try to look into this tomorrow.
And won't I need to enter a password to turn off the password?

@Cerberus Ask Ubuntu is where people go.

Because I don't have any passwords, except for logging into a non-admin account.
@FaheemMitha Yeah, so you see why switching OSes sucks? I have to learn all new things, but I just want to use the computer for simple tasks.
But it does seem more secure than the old XP computers, so I am glad we have Linux now. No more crap installed by the children.
Luckily, the staff computer runs Windows 7.

@Cerberus children?

I work in a basement where we hold child-slaves.
Didn't you know?
Okay, okay, it is a school.

@Cerberus Well all new things involve overhead. The key is to choose sensibly what new things you learn. Avoid PHP, for example. That way only lies the fiery pit, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth.

3:04 PM
I work partly in education.

@Cerberus You work in a school?
@Cerberus Oh

@FaheemMitha I actually created a PHP script lately, without knowing PHP at all. I got it to do what I needed.

@Cerberus Congratulations. Now drop the keyboard and back away slowly.

ah the good old anti-PHP fascism

@ElendilTheTall How about "the only winning move is not to play"?

3:07 PM
Why is PHP so bad?

@FaheemMitha sounds like Aristotle - "The only way to avoid criticism is to do nothing, say nothing, be nothing"

@ElendilTheTall Also a quote. You really don't recognize that one?

@FaheemMitha By the way, about that picture: it was more than an hour before dusk. And it was summer. So it wasn't dark at all.

@Cerberus It just is. Do a search on the net.

Okay.

3:09 PM
@Cerberus I see. So the camera was making it look dark, when it wasn't?

Yes.

@FaheemMitha Great argument

In my experience, phone cameras always do that outside.
They take an average of the sky and the land, or something, which turns out to be far too bright (so the pictures becomes too dark).

Yes. Evaluative metering. You can, on decent phones, change it to Spot metering

@ElendilTheTall That really wasn't intended to be an argument. The subject has been beaten to death on the net. And I have finite energy.
@Cerberus I see.
Question: is a proper camera any better than a good camera phone these days?

3:12 PM
@ElendilTheTall I think I can tap the land to take that as a point of reference, but not in the stock app.
@FaheemMitha Absolutely.
And you know I am a very sceptical person.
Especially in low light, any smartphone will be crappy.

Jay
@Cerberus You work at a school? I always had fantasies about teachers and such. Teehee

There are maybe 2 Windows phones (hah!) that are somewhat better than normal smartphone cameras, but still nothing like a good proper camera.

@FaheemMitha infinitely

@Jay Hah, you must have been very busy, then, in class!

Jay
@Cerberus The camera on my samsung galaxy s6 is pretty amazing

3:15 PM
@Jay But still far worse than that of a good proper camera, especially in low light.

Jay
dont know the exact specs off the top of my head but my pictures always come out really clear even in really low light

I think a Lumia 1020 or so has the best phone camera.
@Jay Ummm... I have seen plenty of examples online.
We probably have different definitions of low light.
But congrats on your S6.
It is a good phone.

Jay
@Cerberus well i havent posted many photos with low light
well i guess the mushroom pictures i posted were low light
they were all in pretty dark places(as expected of mushrooms) but the photos i posted were pretty bright

@ElendilTheTall @Cerberus Ok, noted. And what is a good camera these days? I had a nice one. It stopped working once I got to India. It must have been the shock.

Jay
@Cerberus I had a huge crush on my art teacher in high school. My mind was definitely busy in class

3:20 PM
@FaheemMitha there are lots
and lots and lots

@ElendilTheTall Well, that's specific.

your question wasn't specific
'what's a good camera?' ... how long is a piece of string?

@Jay That is so cute!

@ElendilTheTall Fine. Give me an example of a camera you recommend.

This is a Galaxy S6. Look at the graininess in the dark objects on the right.
Any phone camera will have this issue.

3:25 PM
@FaheemMitha what is your budget? what are your expectations? what are you going to use it for?

@ElendilTheTall Let's say under $500. And just a generally good camera.

@FaheemMitha Lindy will be able to help you better; he knows about this stuff.
@ElendilTheTall Just give him an expensive one.

@Cerberus Yes, I noticed.

@FaheemMitha phone?

I have this one. But it doesn't work any more.
Nice camera.

3:27 PM
one of the new breed of mirrorless cameras

It's probably repairable, though.
@ElendilTheTall Fancy.

@ElendilTheTall how many cameras do you have?

@FaheemMitha one DSLR, one film SLR, one very old Kodak from 1911

@ElendilTheTall 1911?

3:30 PM
@FaheemMitha yes...
it came after 1910 but before 1912

@ElendilTheTall ok

Do you also have a less old Kodak from 1911?

Jay
i made a wrap for lunch today. With honey turkey, rosemarino ham with provologne, arugula, and horseradish sauce.

Family heirloom?

@Jay Sounds great!
I'll take two.

Jay
3:31 PM
haha im make you one when you come visit

@Jay you had me until horseradish

Yay!

horseradish with poultry? you cray cray

@ElendilTheTall Horseradish can be nice; just don't use too much of it.

@FaheemMitha nope, picked it up at a flea market
@Cerberus i love horseradish. with beef
where it belongs

3:32 PM
@ElendilTheTall Ok. How do you know it is from 1911 then?

@FaheemMitha serial number

Jay
@ElendilTheTall horseradish with turkeyAND ham

@ElendilTheTall You are afraid it might drown out the flavour of the turkey?

@Jay beef and fish dude. Turkey and ham needs mustard, dijon mustard

@ElendilTheTall Oh, that dates it? Ok.

Jay
3:33 PM
@Cerberus No he's just being close minded

it just doesn't go

And does this 1911 camera work well?

why not put fucking jam on there?

Jay
@ElendilTheTall well to my palate it tastes good

@FaheemMitha well enough

3:33 PM
@ElendilTheTall ok

@Jay That's what pincers are for...

Jay
@ElendilTheTall because its a completely different taste profile
man coming from the guy who eats chocolate bars on sandwichs...

whatevs man, you cray

I like a very mild sauce of horseradish and cream with smoked chicken.

Jay
@Cerberus yea the horseradish sauce i used is a creamy sauce so it tones down the horseradish spice

3:35 PM
Right.

@jay you might like Tewkesbury (pronounced Tyooks-bree) Mustard - horseradish and mustard

I'll eat it.

Jay
@ElendilTheTall ohhh sounds good
@Cerberus yea seriously, more for us if elendil doesnt want any
Hmm 11:36... i think ill just eat an early lunch.

I'll have it, on a nice soft bap with pulled brisket and caramelised onions

Jay
brb

3:36 PM
the brisket tossed in thick, rich gravy

@ElendilTheTall sounds good. My sauce – it's actuallt my aunt's – also contains mustard and lemon juice, and a tiny bit of sugar.

@ElendilTheTall Perhaps you are thinking of a much stronger horseradish sauce.
Mine isn't sharp to the tongue at all.
Mustard, which is related to horeradish, and chicken are a classical combination.

@Cerberus not too strong, no. Here you get creamed horseradish (milder) and just straight horseradish sauce, which has more kick

I've only ever seen straight minced horseradish in shops.
But I add maybe 1 teaspoon to 100 ml of cream.

3:38 PM
I prefer creamed
it's milder, but also less vinegary
English Mustard is also good with beef

My sauce is probably 1000x milder than that creamed sauce.
I love mustard.
I eat it plain from the jar.
Or even from the baggie they give you in snack bars.

I imagine Dutch mustard to be somewhat sweet
like German or American

Is English mustard the very yellow kind that comes in tiny jars and is very strong?
Sweet mustard? That sounds horrible.

@Cerberus yes
@Cerberus German mustard is sweet
relatively
as is American

We normally eat French mustard. Except Zaanse mosterd, which is from the town of Zaandam or its region; that one is much like standard Dijon, but with some whole seeds mixed in.
@ElendilTheTall shudders
That sounds as bad as sweet mayonnaise, which is unfortunately common in Holland.

3:42 PM
I dislike seedy mustard
Dijon is my go-to general purpose mustard
Maille, or if I'm feeling flush, Grey Poupon

I think I prefer seedless, but I don't really care. I want my mustard simple.
Yes, Maille is what I use.
My father loves English mustard, it's what he always uses.
I like it all right.

it comes into its own with roast beef

It is almost like horseradish...

but with more depth

Mustard is an essential component to the few Dutch dishes that exist: andijviestamppot and boerenkool.
We put it on the sausages.
It should be in that picture.
Some passer-by must have licked it off.

3:46 PM
what is the veg?

It's broad-leaved endive, raw.

in potato?

Mixed with potato puré and bacon.
Yes.
Some cheese in the puré.
It used to be my favourite meal as a child.

i don't recall ever having endive

I only ever eat it like this.
Maybe once a year I eat it separately, cooked with some cream, or something.

3:50 PM
ah yes, Endive Day

Jay
my favorite green/salad is arugula
i love that peppery kick

i like spinach

Also eaten with meatballs.

or a mix thereof

Jay
i like cooked spinach. hate the texture of raw spinach

3:51 PM
honey mustard dressing, now there's a good use for mustard

The sauce is traditionally poured into a hollow.
(We are boors.)

Jay
@ElendilTheTall i would not have guessed that was a meatball if you havent told me :P

@Jay wrong person dude

@Jay Doesn't spinach give you this unpleasant sensation on your tongue?

Jay
@Cerberus YES!!!!
exactly my issue with it!

3:52 PM
Everyone's issue, I thought think!
Otherwise I like spinach.

i don't recall any unpleasant sensation

Jay
I like the spinach flavor so cooking it usually elim. the texture issue

but it's been a while since I had it cooked

I get the same sensation with raw.

3:54 PM
But it isn't noticeable if you eat only a little bit of spinach.

I'll have to pay attention next time I'm snarfing it down

Jay
@Cerberus wait so you get the sensation when the spinach is cooked too?

rhubarb now, that makes my teeth feel weird

@Jay Yes, sure.

Jay
@Cerberus maybe we are thinking of different things then
mine is more how it feels on my teeth and tongue as i chew it
just bugs me

3:56 PM
I don't know about you, but the unpleasant feeling caused by spinach is I thought a universal thing. Maybe you usually eat your cooked spinach more mixed with other things.

4:23 PM
I like spinach. Raw or cooked.

@Jay Do you get a similar sensation from baking powder? I do.
Like from a muffin that contains lots of it.

Jay
not that i have noticed
i do have a slight allergy to honeydew

I only realised this when I was like 30.

Jay
makes my throat feel a bit scratchy

Hmm what is that?

Jay
4:29 PM

Is that a kind of melon?

Jay
but i like cantaloupe better anyway
yea its a sweet melon

I see.
I do have certain melon issues.
Always disliked it as a child, never quite knew why.
Maybe it's related.
Oh, and many people say rhubarb may cause the same sensation as spinach. I do know there was something odd about rhubarb that made me dislike it somewhat, but the last time I ate rhubarb was maybe 10 years ago.
Oh, and I read somewhere that spinach contained saponines, which sounds like soap: to me, the sensation of spinach does feel somewhat soapy!

Jay
if i had to describe the wierd feeling when eating spinach id say "fuzzy?"
no that wouldnt be quite right

Not soapy?
Fuzzy and soapy sounds right.

Jay
4:35 PM
not particularly

Ginseng.

Jay
cute

Q: What is the best variety of rice or preparation of rice to use in soup?

JayI've made chicken rice soup several times in the past and I've always ran into an issue of the soup coming out too starchy/thick because of the rice. Or in the worst case scenario when I added too much rice, the soup ending up looking like rice porridge. Usually it isn't too much of a problem r...

@Cerberus im turned on right now

Well, well, well.
Better eat some spinach.

Jay
5:16 PM
Crap nuts
so i mentioned before i was doing unit testing on web services right now
base on the rate i test on average 1 command every 5 minutse
I have about 300 more commands to test
That means 25 more hours of unit testing
(300*5)/60
by the end of this week. Shitttt

6:10 PM
@jay do you use text expansion?

Jay
text expansion?
ah no
but thats not going to help in my case
These unit testing require information that is too long to type so im copying and pasting most of the information i need
For example many of these request require a customeridnumber. These ids are typically 10-20 digits depending on different accounts
makes no sense to type those out
and the account number will be different for different services so even if i was typing it out, auto completing those wouldn't help out
The major time killer for each command is understanding the output and why its giving me an error
Right now these services are in early stages of development, so about 80% of them aren't working properly
and i've drank too much coffee today so my stomach is are gurgling
i kinda wanna go to the bathroom and self induce some throwing up
@Cindy has that elusive laptop finally arrived yet

@Jay No. It's still elusive.

Jay
@Cindy gosh darn laptop

@Jay Probably you just have to ride out the caffeine high until your system has dealt with it.

Jay
what delivery service is being used?
@Stephie i think its more just the acidity of the coffee that is upsetting my tummy than the caffeine itself

6:23 PM
@Jay I was worried that I might miss it while I was out (dr. appt. and lunch), but no notice. I think Fed Ex.

@Jay So stop drinking crappy coffee ;-)

Hell, they might be using carrier pigeons.

Jay
@Stephie its not bad. all coffee are acidic in nature
@Cindy that might explain why its taking 5 million years

@Jay I know, right?

Jay
"Coffee is highly acidic and it can stimulate the hypersecretion of gastric acids. Decaffeinated coffee has been shown to increase acidity to a greater degree than either regular coffee or caffeine alone. Both caffeine and coffee stimulate gastric acid secretion and decaffeinated coffee raises serum gastrin levels."

6:26 PM
@Cindy That explains it:
The passenger pigeon or wild pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) is an extinct North American bird. Named after the French word passager for "passing by", it was once the most abundant bird in North America, and possibly the world. It accounted for more than a quarter of all birds in North America. The species lived in enormous migratory flocks until the early 20th century, when hunting and habitat destruction led to its demise. One flock in 1866 in southern Ontario was described as being 1 mi (1.5 km) wide and 300 mi (500 km) long, took 14 hours to pass, and held in excess of 3.5 billion birds. That...

@Stephie Lol.

Jay
I need to get a large pack of 5-hour energy

@Jay Trust me, I know. By proxy, that is. But I said good coffe instead of crappy (=sour) coffee. Different method, different roast. And voilá: Hubby can drink coffee again.

Jay
@Stephie the coffee im drinking isnt sour at all.
its actually relatively fancy coffee
its those single cup coffee makers
and when i make it i can choose the strength of the coffee and such
I want to flop my face on my desk and take a nap
doing these unit test is kinda mind numbingly boring

Got my flu shot today. And apparently I'm healthy as a horse. (That is, until the doc gets my blood work back.) I'm pretty sure that will result in medication.

Jay
6:38 PM
Im healthy as a teddy bear

Bonus - I've lost 8 pounds.

Jay
depending on what your original weight was, i dont know if thats a good or bad thing

@Jay That's 'cause you are a teddy bear! :)

Jay
haha
maybe, i do love hugs

@Jay I don't think it's either. My weight pretty much stays in the same range all of the time. I couldn't afford to lose another 8, though.

Jay
6:43 PM
i wouldnt mind losing 8
i kinda have a voluptuous butt. lol probably from sitting all day ><

130 - 135 is ideal for me. But 130 is really the low limit. If I get lower, I look sickly.

Jay
im afraid to say my weight lol
I swear im big boned

@Jay Heavy thoughts I tend to say...

Jay
haha
ok fine. i weight around 180lb

@Jay Well, you're fairly tall aren't you?

Jay
6:49 PM
and im just below 5'10 so no im not that tall
according to my bmi im on the larger side but i dont look fat
as least i dont personally think i look fat
i mean i posted that picture with my new blazer 2 weeks ago

That seems like it should be a good weight for your height.

Jay
so you guys have a general idea of my body shape

@Jay I thought you looked good. :)

Jay
haha thanks
lets just say everytime i go to an amusement park i always do the weight guessing thing
and i always end up leaving with a large stuffed animal because they under guess by 20-30lb every time

@Cindy Second that!

6:52 PM
I don't find scrawny or extremely muscular men attractive.
@Jay Cool!

Jay
@Cindy i used to find slim men attractive but lately my taste has moved along towards stockier guys
mostly because they have nicer asses :P
@Cindy Its funny when i go with a group of friends. We each end up leaving with a large stuffed animal because i rotate across different weight guessing places until we each get one ;)

@Jay Way to go!

Jay
Have you been to Hershey Park?

No. I would like to, though. I've only been to one park up north, in Akron, I believe. I'm stuck for the name right now, though.
Cedar something?

Jay
Hershey Park is the one my family always go to when we were younger. Good memories :)

6:59 PM
Maybe Cedar Point?

Jay
My faovrite ride was called CAnyon River Rapids but unfortunately it doesnt exist anymore
