@FaheemMitha I'm not sure I have a question yet. I'm just trying to do some recording (having never really used the program). It's not hugely intuitive, but I've barely looked at it. My problems seem to stem from Windows 7 and the recording equipment that I'm using, more than from Audacity.

@Jay I don't know because I've never had one, but I seem to recall reading something along the lines of enough to cover all your expenses for a couple of months
@Jay True. But we are at another position in life than you are. We have a house (-> monthly payments) and two children. As we are in the process of renovating our house, there is in fact more money "there", but that's budgeted for different projects.
And I feel a family network can - if push comes to shove - be part of an emergency fund. But that's different for every family.
@Jay another bit of math: Yes, reducing your student loan saves money. But having to take out a loan in case of emergency costs way more, interest-wise. Paying back student loans is a marathon, not a sprint (but with sprints whan you have the extra money, of course).
@Jay do you really need 2k per month? An emergency fund is calculated based on the bare necessities - not including cinema etc.
@Jay Just decide to put a certain amount aside for X number of months until you reach the 3 month point. After that you can just add small amounts when you can and just let it continue to grow but at a much slower rate.
so it might be a good idea to set the extra 500 aside as emergency until i have a decent amount built up before i put that 500 back into student loans?
