5:10 PM
3 down. 2 to go
That polyalphabetic one was satisfying, I wanted to include tables for each alphabet and the tabula recta etc, but had to cut the out to save space. Now I have space!

Hahaha

5:23 PM
woo last one.
@n_palum would you supply a third please?

Will do

What you don't like my answers?

they're mine now ;)

Well my name is on them :P

5:26 PM
Although you'll get the rep, bonus for you for your help :P

That is if people upvote individuals and not just the 1st one

heh :P
i've got upvotes on mine, so you should get a few. I hope this will stay on HNQ a while too

Side note. Opinions on puzzle idea. Would it be weird to make a puzzle with my tattoos? XD
@BeastlyGerbil The couple on the individual may have been me

not as weird as making a tattoo of your puzzles

@n_palum Elaborate...?

5:29 PM
Haha I guess so @GarethMcCaughan that'd be interesting...

As long as the tattoos aren't in any... disturbing places then probably

I only have them on my arms (for now) and I had an idea to incorporate one.. since there's symbols.
So don't worry your young little mind Gerbil

you guys rep farming on that guide, LOL? upvotes for days

Oh yeah, all bout that rep

I repcapped ages ago :P
I'm doing this to improve not for the rep really
I have enough and can't earn any more today

5:36 PM
i'm 15 from capping 2 days in a row.

I just like helping

I'll probably take the rest of the day off from work to celebrate this achievement

Sounds smart

Woo all done!
thanks @n_palum for that. I had no idea there was an answer cap. Probably sensible really

Probably, and no problem

Braille, morse and ascii are monoalphabetic substitutions. — Edheldil 19 mins ago
Thoughts?
I have them down as polyalphabetic

That's a Deus question

@Deusovi help! :P
I put it down as poly because that uses an 'alternate language' so surely its poly?

Well, there's a one-to-one relationship: A is 65 and vice versa uniquely, isn't it? That one of the sets isn't alphabetic doesn't matter in my opinion.

so mono?

I'd say yes, mono. In their basic form, these use one set of symbols.

5:52 PM
Ok, I'll move it over

Braille and Morse are really neither I think

Just gunna edit my answers

they're encodings more than alphabetic ciphers
ascii is an encoding, unless it's on alphanumerics instead of just alpha, then it's sort of a poly cipher

Should I put braille and morse in the 'Other' then?
you know if there is a disagreement i'm gunna wait for Deus :P

They should go with Pigpen and stuff, non-alphabetic

5:54 PM
'symbolic'

Yes, symbolic is good.

Okay, I'm going to move braille and morse, leave ascii where it is for now and wait for @Deusovi 's verdict on placement
what about the bases section? where should hexadecimal and stuff go?

Q: I sound like death when I am alone - Riddle

MMAdams I sound like death when I am alone, Though I am no longer made of bone. With a friend our shapes may range From the eyes of a serpent to the cars on a train. But that's just in my basic form. In other shapes, please be forewarned Blood will spill and heads will ro...

Righty, braille and morse moved to the 'Other ciphers' answer, under the heading 'symbolic ciphers'. ASCII and alternate bases have been left until a consensus is met

what have I done?!
And hi deus :P

Hey. :P

So yeah, we need your professional verdict

@Rubio Have you banned Rubio yet? :p

Guides all up and sorted, now the details need to be looked at
Basically, we are unsure where braille, morse, ascii and bases should go

You should probably CW all but one of the answers so it doesn't look rep-farm-y.

6:07 PM
n_palum posted most of the others

Hm. What exactly do you mean by "bases"?

like hex, octal etc.
base64, binary etc.

ASCII (and Unicode) are just methods of converting characters to numbers, and bases are just different ways of writing those numbers. So when people say "hex", they mean "ASCII codes interpreted as hexadecimal numbers"
base64 is slightly different - it's an actual encoding

I've moved braille and morse to 'other', ascii not sure if poly or mono, and bases no idea
hmm. don't really want to split base 64 from bases...
And base 64 is hard to explain

I'd be happy to do a writeup on ASCII, bases, and base64 encoding.

6:10 PM
Please do!
I've covered it very very briefly and i don't have the best understanding of them

Braille and Morse should probably go in "monoalphabetic ciphers".

Should I just move all of them to 'other' and then provide a link to your answer?

(Hell, I'd say that ASCII/bases should too, but a separate section for them might be best because they're so common.)

I really have no idea, and people seem to be saying different things for each. I think the safest thing to do is to move them all to 'other' and let you explain

Braille and Morse are definitely monoalphabetic.
It's just that the "alphabet" you're encoding things into happens to not look like the standard English one.
(You could even say Braille is a substitution cipher if you wanted.)

6:15 PM
alright, I'll move braille and morse to mono (under the title 'alternate languages' still?) and the rest to other

I'm not sure I'd call them "alternate languages".

don't braille and morse both have ways to encode multiple letters together?

hmm... 'symbolic ciphers'
I know braille does

@Sconibulus They do, but they're not often used when they're being used as ciphers.

When I learnt it there was a shortcut word for each letter
e.g. x on its own = 'it', b on its own = 'but' etc.

6:17 PM
Maybe Braille, Morse, A1Z26, and flag semaphore should all be combined into a single section called "substitution ciphers" that just has a brief description of each, and then a table with all of the encodings?

oh yeah I missed A1Z26 and semaphore
sounds good
I assume you mean a section in the mono answer, not a separate answer?

I don't think there's a need to treat each of them separately - after all, they're the same thing but with different symbols (as long as you aren't using Grade II Braille or morse digraphs)
Sure, that would be fine

Sid
@Deusovi You have an i-phone, I believe? Because I need to discuss about a few features.
Ping me when you are free.

Yeah, I do. Why?

you making a puzzle out if i-phone features?
thats already been done in a game called 'blackbox' (great game)

Sid
6:21 PM
I am planning to buy a new phone. I had android so far. So, would like to know how i-phone compares with that.

oh right :P

I wish SE had collapsible boxes.

Sid
I thought it would be better if I could discuss with someone who really has an i-phone than rely on people who have never seen one.

So did you have any specific questions?

okay all moved

Sid
6:27 PM
General stuff, like Battery size, Security, how is transferring files done? ,etc..

i-phone battery = crap
mine keeps running out of charge when it says it has 40% charge
and apple have admitted there is a fault in the battery but only replace i-phone 6s batteries

That's never happened to me
but yeah, the battery life detection is not great

what i-phone do you have?

security is fine as long as you set a password
I've got the iPhone 5

ah, yeah I don't think it happens in 5s
only 6 and 6s

6:30 PM
that makes sense
anyway, as for transferring files, it depends on exactly what you mean by that
you have to use iTunes if you want to back up your phone as a whole
but if you're just talking about PDFs and other documents, you can use Dropbox

or mail and airdrop

@Deusovi It wasn't my idea that's all I'm sayin'
IPhones are butt

Sid
Okay. Battery-life is a major factor for me. Coupled with it being usually expensive maybe, it's not for me.

battery life itself is pretty long, the battery is just sometimes sporadic

^
Yeah, the actual battery life isn't bad, especially when you first start using it

Sid
6:34 PM
Pretty long as in?

I stand by my statement that they're butt.

but some versions aren't great at detecting how full their batteries are

Sid
How long without charging would it they last?

Most battery life is good when you first start using a phone, it's all a matter of how you take care of it
Contrary to popular belief, you don't want the battery to die to "cycle" it

If you're not actively using it, at least 3 days.

6:34 PM
if in constant use with no battery saver probably about 2-3 hours, battery saver probably increases that by an hour or so

Only 2-3 hours? No, definitely longer than that

maybe, but i usually have a lot of background apps open :P

You should close them :P

yeah probably :P

My Pixel can last me 8-14 hours on a lot of use throughout the day, depending on how much I do

6:38 PM
Lol I'm exactly 1000 rep behind JoeZ

@n_palum Pixels are amazing, they can charge rapidly as well

They're really nice, and definitely charge fast
I have some things I'm not crazy about, but overall much better than the Samsung I had

7:05 PM
@n_palum What is this I can't even

hahaha couldn't tell you
I'm taking over the star board though
This is my legacy

8:04 PM
I've switched to mobile, can someone give me a link to the Codenames room

Q: All locked up and nowhere to turn

ben-Nabiy DerushWhile working in your basement, you notice there is a portion of concrete which is not like the rest. It is funny you never noticed it before, but most of the time there was a rug covering it. Tapping on the area made a somewhat hollow sound, so hammer in hand, you smash into the concrete... Hand...

@Sid One of the biggest hassles for Android users moving to Apple is the file transfers. Putting anything onto your phone (music, video, pictures, etc.) has to be done via iTunes. I find it to be a real pain, and it's one of the main reasons I switched to Android.
You can still remove pictures you took with the phone and stuff just by plugging it into the computer, but putting stuff on is a real pain.
You also have to get used to not having as much control over the look and feel (and functionality) of your phone.

Yeah...

And no swipe keyboard on iPhone (that right there is enough to make me swear off it forever)

@GentlePurpleRain There is one now

Oh, okay.
I'm still not going back... :P

9:16 PM
Didn't expect you to :P

Can't believe I tappity-tap-tapped for as long as I did!

Q: Please solve this riddle for me!! I have been trying for an hour now and it's driving me crazy

GabbyA naval leader, but without a boat; On water never was he meant to float, Though unlike all the others of his ilk, He took command upon a sea of milk.

Anyone know of a polyalphabetic substitution cipher that preserves case and punctuation? Obviously I could just create a custom base 85/91/94 vigenere variant, but it would serve my purposes better if it was a "well known" cipher with an actual name and existing online implementations.

I once met this cute polyalphabetic substitution cipher that preserves case and punctuation on the bus and tried to get her number, but she gave me a fake one. So unfortunately I never did get to know her.

Happens to the best of us.
