Q: 8 Puzzle Unsolvable Proof?

Vivek LaikanHow do I proof that this 8 puzzle cannot be solved if the final state is ?

3:24 AM
unix.stackexchange.com/questions/367005/… ... loving the comments. (oh. wait.)

D:

please don`t ask suck questions on puzzling.stackexchange.com

I like the puzzling joke, but oh god no please don't

Honestly, no

Given a long timeframe to do meta-puzzles in, there's no real incentive to get one done for the challenge

@JamalSenjaya nice thought, but one can post a meta-puzzle anytime anyway, so what's point of a TC?

and it's hard enough to manage just one at a time let alone two. (The last one hasn't even been closed off and tallied)

Q: Could we have more than 1 topic challange?

Jamal SenjayaI think we should have 2 topic challanges. Meta-puzzle Topic Challenge. Meta-puzzles are good puzzles, it's good to encourage members here to keep creating Meta-puzzles, but its hard to create, so we need long duration for this, I suggest 1 to 2 months is ideal for this, so in a year there wil...

To encourage
I'm sure someone will come to volunteer to manage it.

I don't think this would give any extra encouragement. FTCs work because there is a time limit, and the topic changes periodically. Birthday parties are fun, but having one everyday isn't.

so sad :(

But I appreciate the fact that you're willing to encourage more metapuzzles. I personally do think we should have more of them.

talking about metapuzzles, what was the latest status update on our devious moderator's?

4:03 AM
Still in progress

There's a tie for the next FTC topic :o

Sid
4:20 AM
How to resolve ties?

get more people to vote :P
actually, get an odd number of additional people to vote

Sid
There must be some weird method like the one which comes alphabetically first will be chosen, etc.

And the tie is broken!

Sid
Again, it is a tie.

Dang.

4:26 AM
Anyone want to play codenames? A game possibly starting if we have enough active players...

4:48 AM
@Alconja introduce the game to BoardGame SE.

@JamalSenjaya Didn't even realise there was such an SE.. good suggestion

Amruth AWe do this , but won't have a clue we did it , Sometimes it leads to fantasy , sometimes just nothing , Sometimes long , sometimes short , It is most useless thing humans are doing from generations , What is this useless thing ..?

Ok, official CCCC hint before I go for the day: The I in the [Note] refers to the me in the clue.

6:08 AM
@Forklift ah yes that was cryptanalysis. This guide covers that along with all the ciphers too.
oops didn't mean to post yet

never heard of it...

I think it was in Sherlock, if I am not wrong..

I used it in my puzzle as well.

Q: Guide to Codes and Ciphers

Beastly GerbilNote: This is a Guide not a Puzzle ciphers are quite common now on puzzling, and at first can seem quite confusing. But ciphers are bigger than this site, used worldwide by companies and secret services to encrypt data. But what is a cipher? What types are there and how can I make or solve one?

6:25 AM
@Sid This one.

@Tech you mean this code? Looks good but I've run out of room in my answer :/

@BeastlyGerbil Yeah. That one. Right.

I'm on mobile right now, but when I get back this evening I can try and cut out some text and add a paragraph on that

6:40 AM
No problems. Take your time. There might be other trivial ones as well - which we can add in there.

Or someone can create a community wiki for less well known ciphers, which people can add to?

Q: Here's a clean and easy visual riddle

Brent HackersThe images below can be connected by a single word. What is the word and what are the connections?

I'm not sure if I can make an answer a community wiki on mobile. Maybe someone else can?

7:32 AM
Found a way to add community wikis on mobile, so I'll just do it. Feel free to add to it though, I'm sure there are some less well known but fascinating ciphers out there.

8:18 AM
@BeastlyGerbil it might also be worth making a separate answer for different ciphers. You get more rep ;), and you can expand more, explaining more clearly and with more/better examples.

That would also allow a table-of-contents post, linking to the different answers

You mean post an answer for each cipher individually?

8:43 AM
@BeastlyGerbil Yeah.
(also, @BeastlyGerbil, awesome work.)

9:08 AM
Thanks :)
I might post separate answer for the more complicated ones, or the more common ones but not for all
Posted he community wiki for now I'll post individual answers tonight
OOps the pic wasn't supposed to be black

@BeastlyGerbil I'd put related ones into one post, and split others.

@BeastlyGerbil There was a Dorabella cipher
Which is unsolved but people have derived alphabets for the symbols

@BeastlyGerbil Group by family, perhaps, so a TOC is useful, but doesn't require a post per individual cipher
With a catch-all bucket for "misc"

9:25 AM
So like where I've spit into transposition, monoapphabetic, polyalphabetic, polygraphic and other split into 5 Posts?

Since we have many good programmer's here, may I ask a question?
I'm looking for a good resource for learning regex. In case if anyone have any good resources, please share.

@Techidiot is that actually a problem? It could be part of the puzzle.

regexcrossword.com , alf.nu/RegexGolf , regex101.com

@Techidiot regex101.com
Ah ninja'd

11:51 AM
Not so much places to learn regex per se, but useful motivators/links

Thanks. I'm not a regular practitioner but want to be one now.. So, I hope the 101 treats the beginners well.

in Charcoal HQ, 1 min ago, by angussidney
http://regexr.com/ is a good reference/testing website

regex101's good for testing/explaining - the other two are just fun and practice :P

Oh, yes I can see it.

in Charcoal HQ, 42 secs ago, by angussidney
@Mithrandir also https://regexone.com/ is pretty good

11:53 AM
Any good place to actually see how it works, how to create one,
@Mithrandir Thanks.

https://regex101.com/ is similar

And regex crossword is a good way to get practise: https://regexcrossword.com/

haha

I'm going to be assigned to a ML/Analytics project and hence need to touch base a little.. Though we have a UI tool for most of the things now a days

11:57 AM
Alternatively you can start reading the SmokeDetector codebase, that's basically how I learned to use regex

@angussidney Someday. That looks .. tediously big :) Thanks though. Bookmarked!

That definitely isn't one of the best ways to learn it, but it is good to see how they can work on a larger scale

Hmm. Yes. Working examples are good to learn.

My Thursday isn't a Friday, but my Monday will be a Sunday

My everyday is a Sadday, when exams are so close.

@Sconibulus Yeah we've got Monday off, but I took Friday off for a 4 day weekend

@TheGreatEscaper umm... have you considered ice cream?

Ice cream is pretty great :D
It doesn't seem to help with marks, though.
Jeez. How long has the current CCCC been active for?
(rhetorical question - I can see the date :P )

1:04 PM
Sure it does, just mush some of the ice cream on a bad grade and the wet paper will crumble, removing the grade
@TheGreatEscaper Since May 21, at 23:59
:P

Huh. I'll try that next time. The ice cream thing.
Heya @paramesis
Karst was good fun!

Hi! Thanks!

I'm interested to know - was my breakthrough the same as your intended one?

I had that one on the back burner for months.
Not quite, my breakthrough was similar to what w-l mentioned, finding that the 7 and 4 must be separated
but the puzzle centered around patterns with the 2's and 5's which I'm glad you found and enjoyed :)

Ah, alright. Interestingly, though, I think you can remove the 7/4 deduction while keeping a unique solution in the top right.... if you're feeling particularly evil.

1:09 PM
A key discovery in my creation path was that the triangles on either side of the 5 must be connected to the 5's, which would have led to your breakthrough

Just wondering (and apologies for the self plugging), have you ever checked out this old thing: puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/47870/… ?

Oh my, will definitely save that

It's another original grid-deduction puzzle of mine, but you don't get told the rules.

Archive is updated.

I get a sense that PSE likes that kind of puzzle, and actually have one posted on my blog that I never told anyone about

1:12 PM
Ooh, can you link me to that?

What with responsibilities and such, I never did make much progress on my intended puzzle blog marathon.
Ah. I've already skimmed through trapezoids, so I guess it's mostly spoiled for me.
It's the same mechanics as described below?

Not exactly spoiled, I meant those mechanics to be given away, but never explained what the colors mean.

I have a hunch.
Guerr gevnatyrf funqrq va rnpu ertvba?

Lol.
Replace Guerr with something similar?

Crab is the answer.
It's also the CC answer, Crabbier
It's also how Rubio won the election, the Crabs

Nevermind, the changing Guerr to something else was a silly idea.

E1: VTC too broad

No

Death, Mayfly, Day, Sun

There's a lot of suitable answers, tbh. A person committing suicide is a morbid example.

A person getting executed, as another.

@TheGreaterEsca : bravo

I assume the intended answer is a person sentenced to the death penalty?

Yes, that is it

Haha, yeah post it if you want

No

Yes, I did one today, you can see it here puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/52136/…

Who can you that, without use the names ?

I'm really sorry but I don't quite understand what you're getting at here.

Q: Trapezoids Compound Hidden Puzzle

paramesis7 months ago, I released a collection of variations of an original puzzle called Trapezoids, but never mentioned that the cover itself is also a puzzle that resolves to a unique solution if a final rule can be discovered. Cover Rules Shade some cells such that they form edge-connected clust...

2:13 PM
I think I figured it out
(but I didn't read the rot13 stuff, so maybe this is what was discarded earlier)

Interesting and apparently valid solution, but not what I had in mind

hmm....

@paramesis there's a reason witless has sets of 5, it took me lots of testsolvers to kill unwanted interpretations!

I can't see how to put anything into Red without violating one of the given rules...

2:19 PM
Hm? It's quite easy to satisfy the given rules and put stuff in red.
for example, top row of the inner hexagon is OOO.O
bottom row of the inner hexagon is O.OOO
(you should be able to build the rest off those easily)

@TheGreatEscaper This was intended as a one-off bonus puzzle. I hadn't really anticipated multiple valid solutions. I'll make a larger set next time I watercolor a puzzle.

ahh, right, a corner is allowed to touch an edge
I thought corners could only touch corners

@TheGreatEscaper lol your riddle is driving me nuts. I have to take a break from it to get some work done.

@Forklift you're really close.
@MOehm surely you can finish it off :)

2:36 PM
I think @MOehm has already got it.

Oh, I think that Forklift has done most of the work, so he should also make the last step. I'm just trying to give a leg up, perhaps a bit blatantly.

Ah right, gotcha
Any feedback on it as a riddle?

It's a very cool puzzle, as always.
But I'm not sure people like rand would call it a riddle :P

Ahaha, true. Can't wait to get puzzle rule-schooled by the experienced folks
I posted it because I've been quiet on PSE for wayyyyyyyy too long. So much pesky life business to attend to.

same here, except that I haven't posted any puzzle

2:41 PM
I'm slowly drawing a new puzzle so I haven't posted in a while

@paramesis Is the rule relatively simple?

@TheGreatEscaper I liked the puzzle. I'm not a great taxonomist, but I think the tags were chosen well.

Hey @MOehm how've you been?

@n_palum Oh, I'm fine, thanks. I hope all is well with you, too?

Doing great, finally making the drive home after work today.. haven't seen family since January 5th

2:47 PM
@TheGreatEscaper when are your TSTs, if I may ask?

TSTs were a month ago, Ank!
If you're going to the IMO, let's just say I'll be seeing you there!

Whee!

We've got a puiblic holiday here today and I've taken tomorrow off, so no work for me today.

Yeah, I'm going too

Nice :)

2:48 PM
Oh very nice :) I took off Friday, our holiday is Monday so, 4day weekend for me

Will be cool to meet another PSEer.

IMO as in the maths olympiad, or is there something else IMO stands for?

Yeah, International Maths Olympiad.
Also, hi :P

so 3 IMOers in the room?
I feel dumb.

congratulations for being on the team?
(I was at two IMOs, but that was yeeeears ago now)

2:49 PM
Who's the third one?
@GarethMcCaughan thanks!

Gareth

@GarethMcCaughan woah, nice!

Coooool, gareth.

but I am the Past and you are the Future :-).

There's a year 8 (13 year old) on the Aus team this year...

2:50 PM
Wow

If he stays on the team (which is very likely) he'd have a run of 5 IMOs!!

Impressive.

Sid
GamEn folks.

I still don't know what GamEn means, but hi to you too sid.

And interesting that it's Australia. Wasn't Terry Tao on the Australian team when he was terribly young, too?

2:51 PM
Yes, I think so.
(slightly off topic: in hindsight, I should have changed the order of the stanzas in my riddle. Doesn't look like most people noticed a subtlety of the words that took me the longest time to make work)

Sid
Wow wow... Congrats to both of you, @TheGreatEscaper and @Ankoganit Have fun. And Win!

Oooo.. yeah that was... amusing

Right home. Any changes? And I still would like some advise on how to split my answer up...

Hey Gerbil!

Hello!

You could try instead of having that big index, split the answer into categories/types among wiki answers?

3:47 PM
s/ wiki, if you want

I'm thinking have a main answer (including intro, index with links, and cryptanalysis), and then have separate answers for monoalphabetic, polygraphic, polyalphabetic

Probably a decent idea, less scrolling

And i need to fix that black image in the wiki
I've added a link to the guide in the cipher tag info if that can be approved
@Sid thanks! Took long enough :P
Ok fixed the image. Now I'll work on splitting up the answer and maybe adding a few more to the wiki

Oh, @BeastlyGerbil, you're in the HNQ.

Have been for a while. And ore answers = longer stay :P
But repcap so :/
I think I was 3rd one point today

Sid
4:18 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Advice is what you meant, I imagine. :P
Pedantry. :P

Oops yes. Well I can change that when I've posted the separate posts :P
This is going to be pretty stop start, so apologies for that.
Transposition is up.
And removed from the main answer...

4:42 PM
Monoalphabetic check, 3 left. Then some edits to the main
uh oh
I can't add any more answers
What should I do?

Haha did you make them wikis?

No...
Does someone else want to add the answers for the others, and I can edit them?
(looking at you @n_palum :P)

Haha sure
You just want a minimal empty one so you can edit freely

Yes please, just add a note at the top about whats going on
The good news is you'll get the rep :P

awh I was gunna make jokes

4:49 PM
heh you can if you want but I'll probably edit them out to make the answers look like the other ones :P

Made 1, let me know if you want another

I'll need 3 I think... I'll just ping you when I need one.
Thanks!

Just ping when you're ready

Okay that was a quick edit, I'm going to develop the answer now

@BeastlyGerbil tossed a second up
