GET YOUR PAWS OFF MY COMPUTER, YOU DAMNED DIRTY PONIES!
3

@Ward you seem to have a pony infestation problem

Yeah, I dunno what's going on there.
And what's with the automatic replacement of pics by 90x90 thumbnails? That totally blows the joke...
Woah, now they're both back to "normal" size...

pony shrink ray

5:35 AM
Monitoring mailbox moves. Boring boring boring.
Although that's better than shit blowing up in you face, any day.

ooooo, custom fonts

That wasn't me!!!
See:

It's 1240. Do you know where your ponies are?

I told my kid to keep the ponies under control, but they keep sneaking out!
God, now that they've discovered how to use WordArt in MS Word, they'll be making their own pictures all the time...

5:41 AM
Dead God, the pony-anity

@Holocryptic That one is your fault, man!

Hoorah
I'd seen her Pikachu outfit in random forums, but to actually find her site... frickin sweet
And then a Flutter Shy cosplay. Yeah, I'm in love.
Although that succubus one is... delicious

I dunno how this is going to go over:

ahahaha
Spreading the love I see

5:56 AM
Nice. I think I have your ethnicity of choice pegged.

My daughter is half-chinese...

Neat. I'm an equal opportunity ogler myself. I don't necessarily understand those people who have a problem with inter-racial relations, myself.

6:14 AM
Oh, sure, I'll ogle anything (and usually get whapped for it by my wife)

hehe, that's how it usually goes. Or so I've been told...

@Ward Tasty!

6:30 AM
OMG, now they're over on the bicycles.se chat, and they've brought friends!
(True pony-philes will recognize 3 different generations of ponies in that gathering!)

@Ward And they're stealing bicycles out of garages!

Bwahah . Just read @sysadmin1138's blog post.. Does anyone have a screencap of the spat?

10:31 AM
nope
but you can totally imagine it going down like that.

@TomOConnor: I'm shocked there's no mention of alphabet salad, and the rather quaint way some folk write...

it was a good blog post but could have done with more ponies
y'know, to really capture the serverfault flavour

3 hours later…
1:33 PM
@sysadmin1138 Can you rearrange my comments so the openID doesn't show up? I guess it doesn't really matter... should I be vaguely concerned about it?
it.toolbox.com/blogs/securitymonkey/…: "BTW, 91.2XX.XXX.XXX resolves to Zhirkov, Russia. Your system is sending data to Russia. Is this a desired result for you?"

1:59 PM
@MikeyB pokes Doesn't look like Movable Type allows that kind of thing. Want me to delete it?
Though looking at certain other blogs (antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2011/11/…) it seems OID providers that don't come stock (google, wordpress, livejournal) get a full URL.

2:16 PM
@sysadmin1138 Mmmmm..... naw, NVM.

2:27 PM
@Holocryptic Spreading, heh. I see what you did there.

um. I don't see what you see I did there.

Maybe I saw you do something different than what you did.
You know, like a Three's Company episode.

Probably. I barely remember Three's Company

Also, @Holocryptic, Three's Company was a television show in the late '70s and early '80s

Aye. I wasn't an itch in my Daddy's pants until early-ish 80s

2:32 PM
Kids today.

I love how consultants wait until after their work sets off the pager to say, 'ignore this'. I guess it's too hard to be pro active about it, thus avoiding unnecessary page outs.

You would hate me. Pretty much anything I run with is being monitored, but is considered non-production. So I have a tendency to not taking advantage of things like "maintenance mode" or "acknowledging alarms".

If it's non-production, why would you monitor it?
I just dealt with that the night before. Some test rig kept setting the damn thing off.

By definition my office is non-operational, so anything run out of our office is ostensibly for internal use. I want to know if something's broken that I should fix, but if it's down it generally affects nobody else.

Yeah, I'd probably shank you with my +9 Dagger of Impotent Rage of the Paged
2

2:39 PM
So does your monitoring system always page the same group of people, depending on their on-call rotation, or does is page the group most responsible for the alarm source?

It emails an email distro which contains the consultants responsible for client. Certain alerts are time sensitive, and lack of action on a ticket will hit the pager.
So then whoever is on the pager gets to clean up and call whomever is responsible for the client.
I wonder if I got my whoever and whomever right? I'd ask on English.SE, but they're bungholes over there. Probably tell me to Google it again.

Ah. Sucks to be you. We have our alerts being, primarily, shipped off to the group who would be most responsible for the software/server/device/pony/whatever. So if something of mine alarms, none of the sysadmins have to deal with the page. They just have to stare at it on the monitoring software's dashboard.
Because google is always the authoritative source of grammar.

Indeed. It sucking to be me is pretty much established fact. My friends were kind enough to point that out the other night at dinner.

2:55 PM
SO or DBA serverfault.com/q/332922/9517 (or elsewhere) ?

3:15 PM
@Iain DBA
and, I can't vote to close for that reason.

@Holocryptic no one can it has to be flagged for a migration to DBA

done

ditto

I threw mine in their as well.

:)

3:23 PM
So when they all get rejected, at least we'll all get equally screwed.
Now then. Time to paint.

hey there folks. If any of you have some 3ware experience, I could really use your input: serverfault.com/questions/332935/…

@ScottPack screwing is non linear above 500
@BillWeiss no idea

I suspect I'm SOL

possibly...probably

googling around says that I should see a single DEGRADED disk
which is the one to replace
and so I suspect that the DEGRADED disk has failed, and then the controller noticed that the second disk had data that didn't match some checksup
*checksum
though I don't know where that checksum would be, given I lost a drive?
dunno
well, off to pick up a replacement drive. hope someone has more insight than I do before I get back :/
I might, as a last resort, turn off ECC checking in the 3ware. that won't be awesome, but it might give me most of the FS

3:35 PM
@BillWeiss I don't know 3ware cards, but like you I'd suspect p0 died and p1 had an URE with the parity data. Looks like you get to finish the weekend on a date with your backup tapes :P

/me nods
that was my thought at first. I can hope, though, right? :)

Sure can!

@Iain Yeah, using "commonly" would have been a better choice of words.
@BillWeiss I use a 3ware controller, but I can't say that I'm an expert on it, I've never seen that ECC error before. Those are Seagates, eh?
Somewhere in the 7200.xx series?

4:11 PM
I wonder if some companies are pointing people here instead of providing tech support, to the point that people think that SO/SF/SU are the actual official tech support sites for their products, and that the people who answer questions here are staff.

Take http://serverfault.com/questions/332723/what-is-the-proper-time-delay-between-sending-emails-for-smtp-to-not-fail-on-win

That question - and in particular the asker's confusion as to why we'd not automatically understand them - makes a lot more sense if you imagine that the reason the asker doesn't specify the software they're using, et

I'm surprised it had no close votes

well yes, that too

If you bang your head against the desk hard enough, you'll understand the question better

4:47 PM
@ScottPack: yep, Barracudas

Q: How do I connect 100BASE-T (iDRAC6) hosts into a Nexus 2232PP via SFP+?

Alain O'DeaI have a dilemma. I want to have an end-to-end 10 Gigabit Ethernet network over SFP+, but my Dell servers have iDRAC6 which only works on 10/100BASE-T. The closest thing I could find was the GLC-T transceiver but that only does 1000BASE-T and won't work with 100BASE-T from what I can tell. How...

This guy's got the budget (supposedly) for end-to-end 10Gbps NICs everywhere as so wants his iDRAC ports at that speed - WHY????? - smells like bullshit to me

6:19 PM
heh
maybe he blew his wad on the 10G switch and can't afford a management switch with 10G uplink? :)

It's a little off... There should have been a plan for the management network.
So why would someone post a BS question?
@chopper3 - Is this a common problem here?

also, I think the iDRAC6 can do gigabit...

more like he sold his boss on buying end to end 10gb and doesn't want to go back and say "We only needed 90% of the ones we ordered"

I guess you have to learn somewhere.

6:34 PM
hmm 2 driveby downvotes - wonder if and who I've pissed off

no, I'm wrong

@Iain ooh-er, I just got a random drive by downvote as well on something from ages ago

@BenPilbrow mine was on two old, accepted and 10+ upvoted answers

Meh, it happens.
Would be nice if people explained. Not that I'm going to lose any sleep over -2 rep though

@BenPilbrow ditto

6:59 PM
probably someone didn't like their question being closed?

Or they were jealous by our pony supply

@BillWeiss I've had bad luck with 1TB Seagate's. The 7200.10 and 7200.11s have been the worst. Historically we had used then as scratch space and imaging drives for forensics work. I can't even begin to guess how many of those things had the warranty executed.

@RobertMoir could easily be, an exercise in futility though

who wouldn't be jealous of our pony supply
@Iain yes but some people think like that, take question closure or criticism personally instead of learning from it.
still I think we're all at the stage where we can afford it, so.. meh~!

Hmm, I don't think I've had any questions closed. But I coud see how someone would be offended.

7:05 PM
@ewwhite if you think we may be harsh here, take a peek at meta.so some time - there be sharks and dragons

meta.so does not suffer fools gladly

@RobertMoir and the bar for fools is very high

having said that, I've been spending a lot of my "Serverfault time" over there building up my rep, chipping in where I can, etc, to try and figure out how it works. Figure it might help to learn how to work with them instead of just raging at them when we have problems

I read it quite regularly, mainly to keep abreast of events and changes to the system

that's a good idea too I think
always nice to know what's being forced on us without regard to how SF works because it sounds like a good idea for SO

7:21 PM
most of the changes get notified here

Speaking of changes. Any particular reason why a post I've taken action on, using the reviewer interface, is still showing up on my list of things to review?

7:43 PM
I've seen that a few times and can't fathom it out

I really wish there was a way to collapse a reviewed item short of refreshing the page.

7:56 PM
^ kids react to... SF's best friend

Does anyone here use zfs-fuse?
on Linux.

8:32 PM
@Ward That's it. I'm moving to Phoenix japancinema.net/2011/11/17/…

9:19 PM
@ScottPack huh. interesting
and bummer, but, you know

9:56 PM
@Holocryptic See if Wesley will give you a job.

10:10 PM
@ScottPack If you look at it in one filter and review it, it can still show up in another filter. It's annoying
I just got reviewer, btw :D

@MarkM My experience is that they don't disappear after I'm done reviewing them.
Rather annoying.

@MarkM well done

I guess it's time to go take care of some trivial edits to get those damn stats unlocked

1 hour later…

Yes
@ScottPack I'm pretty sure he'd point and laugh
