@ThoriumBR Oh neat. Do you work for a company there already? Just remotely?

i know toronto is a expensive city, but is cheaper than sao paulo or brasilia
i worked for IBM, but changed job one year ago. i qualify for the skilled worker status, so I can go even without a job
and i can find a job quickly, because i am a sysadmin, network manager, hardware guy, programmer, and I can wash dishes...

@ThoriumBR Good for you for getting out of that place

@ThoriumBR and you can always ask @Wesley for nasty stuff to do
2

I bet the immigration process is a long, drawn-out one filled with red tape heh
annnnnnd, go-go out of context star!

@NathanC that's not out of context, that was really meant this way :)

3:03 PM
@NathanC Yes, it is. Takes at least 18 months of waiting, send papers, sending other papers, and such... but even if took 10 years, I would take it!

@Gowtham Taxes. And taxes. And import taxes, export taxes, taxes over taxes, taxes over those last taxes. We even have a tax that was supposed to be an universal tax that would replace all the others, but they "forgot" to stop taxing the other taxes. I wish this last bit was a joke.
in Root Access, Oct 5 '13 at 1:56, by That Brazilian Guy
@Gowtham I'm brazilian. ANYTHING is expensive. A galaxy s4 is $2500, I checked yesterday. A macbook pro is $5000+
...yea :\

lol

there are people making a living just flying to miami, buying iphones, mac books and such, and selling here

@ThoriumBR 10 years is more like how long it would take to get into the US. =/ We're about as much of a bureaucratic mess as anywhere else.

Bob
@ThoriumBR That's exactly what the other guy said.

3:06 PM
@ThoriumBR Isn't that kinda...illegal?

@NathanC It's Brazil. Everything is illegal except extortion.

Bob
@NathanC Lots of money > legalities. Well, for a lot of people.

@NathanC It's Brazil, you can't avoid breaking the law and survive

I need to scoop up some questions. I'm a few up votes away from 20k.
But I'm lazy.

@ThoriumBR Revolution!

3:08 PM
@NathanC not much illegal...

Bob
@Wesley Well, have a few. Can't push you all the way without tripping the mass up/downvote detection, unfortunately.

@Farhan Yep...been circulating since it was announced...:P

@Bob Smooches! =)

I don't wanna install office 2003 just to install 2007. Then call to activate over the phone because license transfers suck balls.
I hate licensing :(

Dan
@voretaq7 Joking aside - when people ask me for phone advice I say "Go to the shop, pick up the flagship phones of the major manufacturers (Apple, HTC, Samsung, Nokia) and purchase the one you like the most. Job. Done.

Bob
@NathanC IIRC you can start the 2007 installer, and it'll just ask you to pop in a 2003 disk to confirm.

@NathanC I didn't see it before today. Although some features listed there are pointless.

@Dan Same when people ask me what they should buy, Windows or Mac. "What are you used to? Buy that again."

starmania!

3:12 PM
@Dan If you have a Mac, buy an iPhone. Otherwise buy whatever feels better in your hand.

go go go

@Bob Hmmm...you might be right. I might have a 2003 disk around somewhere.

Bob
Oh god. At least I'm here for this one?

Buy a phone with crime deterrent

@voretaq7 I usually recommend people go with whatever phone or tablet represents whatever app store they're already invested in.

@MichelZ I guess we figured out who the star freak is.

@Dan I don't understand how people can buy phones without going and having a play with it first...4 million people ordered the iPhone 6. That's a lot of money to spend on something you've never touched.

@Bob Let's not have another starpocalypse.
3

@Wesley Buy an iPhone! Be Happy! Star Everything! Fuck you!è

3:14 PM
@tombull89 To resell.

@MichelZ you!è suck

@Wesley Star ALL the @Wesley things!
2

@MichelZ Also, I'm planning on getting a 6plus
@voretaq7 NOOOOOO!!!

Once they're backordered, expect them to pop up on ebay with a markup

@Wesley I suggest holding it first

3:14 PM
You have fully used your vote allowance for today
lol

@voretaq7 ARE YOU IMPLYING I HAVE TINY HANDS

can't star anymore

the fucking thing is the size of a dinner plate

:)

@Wesley You're a cat! You have dainty delicate paws!

3:15 PM
@voretaq7 Covered in blood and shredded flesh.

@Wesley still dainty.

Last month in the average price of a house in London went up by £12 (about $19) an hour!

@voretaq7 See, I kinda wanted an iPad, but don't want another device to keep track of and sync and recharge and juggle apps for. So now that the 6++ is so big, I can get that and be happy with a phone and an iPad.

@Chopper3 HOUSING BUBBLE! <joyous shrieking from realtors>

Is that an iPhone 6 plus in your pocket or are you smuggling a microwave out of the store?
2
I should probably tweet that.

3:23 PM
@Wesley please spare us

@MichelZ Lick me.

@Wesley With pleasure!

@MichelZ Something something "Cat'lic" something something "sacramental wine" something something "hairy tongue".

:P

3:39 PM
@Wesley Low-Carb Communion Wafers? But.... if it turns into the body of Christ shouldn't it be mostly meat/protein?

@voretaq7 catholicceliacs.org/Options.html That is all.
Also, look at the page title.
Totally lol'd

@Wesley Page titles are a sin :P
also I always assumed the solution was "Just ask for the wine."

Weird issue. Customer can email anyone in our company but one specific person. The email never reaches our mail gateway but he doesn't receive a bounceback.
wat

@cole Problem on the customer's end. NMP Motherfuckers!

@voretaq7 but it sends fine to her alias.
Even more of a wat

3:46 PM
@cole ok, that's nice. Your server isn't getting it. It's getting everything else. Therefore the problem is not your server.

And you get a switch with shipping damage, no power supplies and missing rack ears in the mail...

@voretaq7 which is what I said.

I'm pissed enough to beat someone down this morning!!

@ewwhite HoCurve? Switches got back?

@ewwhite whoa what happened there?

3:50 PM
@ewwhite does it feature NSA technology now?

I should stay off of ebay.

@cole Switch was holdin' back on its pimp.

@ewwhite send it back then

I will.

@ewwhite Poop on it before sending it back.

4:58 PM
Hug your loved ones, folks. Never know when they'll be gone. =(

@Magellan that sounds ominous, everything ok?

@DennisKaarsemaker Wife's Dad passed away a couple days ago. Hit everybody pretty hard since it was a total surprise.

ooh, not nice :(

I'll get back to you shortly with the cover letter. But it's been tough to focus the past couple days.
Tough old guy too. We're going to miss him.

5:15 PM
Sigh, excel. Someone clobbered a major production excel file by saving their old version over the one that was modified by someone else. Luckily the full backup was recent enough.
@Magellan Sorry to hear that man.

@Magellan there's no rush, it's not as if it's raining CV's...

I accidentally unplugged two drives off a production RAID 5 array ... oopsy
Thank the god of backups

@Nick That sounds like a bad day

@ShaneMadden It was

@Nick we lost a full shelf on a netapp today. And for some systems all recent backups failed, which went unnoticed...
fortunately the data came back in the end, but I bet some people where having a very bad day

5:30 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker whenever any website is unavailable I am guessing its syadmins are having fun

@Nick true. Fortunately only internal systems were affected :)

@DennisKaarsemaker well my mistake caused a downtime of 20 seconds until the backup server storage kicked in

lucky you
this took a tad longer

@DennisKaarsemaker when I realised my mistake I bolted to the nearest production terminal... I knew I would need this script which auto activates the failover one day... well this day was today :P

always prepare for the worst :)

5:35 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Heh this has saved me hundreds of times... everytime I setup a new server cluster I always setup tons of scripts for all of the occasions I can think of.

@DennisKaarsemaker would love this...
We set the bar high. Adjusting for spam and wholly irrelevant resumes, as of September 2014, just 4.25% of qualified candidates pass our phone screening, and 1.35% make it to the final round of in-person interviews.

@ewwhite Every open position is like that. Everywhere.

yup.
all sounds completely generic

And we get results. We hire 9 out of 10 candidates to whom we make an offer. We hire the right people, and the quality of our products and services reflect that fact.
Come on now..

@ewwhite huh

5:47 PM
this is how we advertise jobs
including cheesy films

@DennisKaarsemaker but you probably hire and retain people better

depends on the department
in IT we're a lot stricter on hiring, CV to hire rate is about 0.4% iirc. But we retain quite well

@Nick EXTINGUISHLPTPORT.sh

@NathanC Heh I dont think I have that one but I actually DO have a wipeBootRecord.sh and a secureWipeDrive.sh
Ofcourse they are hidden away in a different directory than the others
And so far never had to use them... except when were replacing servers... its fun to use them on these

jobSecurity.sh

5:52 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker hmm what could that do :p

I just called someone on Spiceworks a "professional opinion-teller"

@DennisKaarsemaker I don't see you in any vids. I can't work there I guess. =(
@Basil And you don't link to it? U SUK

@Wesley I'm not cute enough for propaganda

All these cool jobs in NYC and I'm up here freezing my ass off in Maine
:p

Spiceworks is like SuperUser after two bong loads and a head injury.
2
I have seen some of the most comical horseshit on the spice works forums.
Makes SuperUser look like kernigan and ritchie

6:07 PM
@Wesley We used to use spiceworks for inventory stuff

@NathanC I like the software. It's great for a SMB network.

But...it's so slow on all but the smallest networks

The community is dookie butter.

Now we have sysaid...but...yeah.

@NathanC Yeah, I take that back. It's great for a S M B network. =)
I wonder if markdown is smart enough... S---M---B
Nope.
Markdown is about as sharp as a bowling ball.

6:09 PM
Erm...so I got an automated Dell recording...the recording was half over when I answered the phone
It's like it started before I even picked up, lol
Heh... Birth Date 04/03/13
According to our payroll system I'm a year and a half old

@Wesley It's a funny place- a little less bad than /r/sysadmin, in terms of the horribleness of the advice, but a lot like attending a training for presales technicians

@Basil I really think SpiceWorks is worse than sysadmin.
My relative awfulness scale:
1. ServerFault
2. SuperUser
3. /r/sysadmin
4. Daniweb
5. Anandtech
6. SpiceWorks forum

@Wesley /r/sysadmin will upvote bad answers if they look right
"I don't understand this, but this is the only comment on the post and clearly they need an answer... upvote"

@Basil So will Spiceworks, and have four "enterprise IT workers" all corroborate it and have massive "spiciness" scores.
@Basil Reddit's upvote habits summed up: WORDS. upvote

6:13 PM
/r/sysadmin's habits summed up: BUZZWORDS! upvote

heh

Hm, my credit score went up 21 points in the past month...woah
Of course, one of the cards isn't reporting the credit limit right...

I'm realizing how stupid in the head I've been by being a cash only person.

I don't know why I did this, but I did...youtube.com/watch?v=GR1g6S45NoM

A: vCenter Server Appliance - Additional users

piotrekttYou need active directory. The good thing about it is that you can have free AD with samba4 on linux nowadays and its straightforward and easy to set up f.e on ubbuntu. Bad thing is that if you don't know linux and samba you will have additional things to learn. Good luck.

@ewwhite ...yes?

ubbuntu? is this the new linnux?

@tombull89 ubbuntu, the distro for stuttering sysadmins.

@Wesley the answer has nothing to do with VMware.
Or any understanding of the problem

6:37 PM
@ewwhite Rip 'im a new one.
Go all Chopper3 on him.
"OHAI, HOPE YOU GET CAUGHT IN FARMING EQUIPMENT. KTHX"

I feel like bad SF users are creeping into my client sites.
I just got an email from customer that said nothing but: We want static address...

@ewwhite Wow. That's just awful.

@ewwhite Like, on the LAN? What problem are they trying to solve?

@ewwhite "Instructions unclear, reset all your passwords."

6:40 PM
they have fiber internet...
they had an outage last week of 18 hours.
due to a fiber cut and an equipment failure at the carrier

Hmm...I can't get into my vcsa web interface with the root user
curious

so wtf is a static gonna do for them?

I told them to get another ISP and use the Elfiq load balancer they bought 6 months ago

How I see Ed on every VMware question with a bad answer:

I asked them to buy service with a /28...

@ewwhite I haven't got the nerve to text him.

@ewwhite Ohai dead bug

So I have to go fix this...
Saturday

What the shit

@ewwhite with an axe?

@DennisKaarsemaker or a flamethrower?

@ThoriumBR that's not ed's style, he prefers more subtlety

7:24 PM
Looks like we get another full time employee :)

@Basil wish we would :(

We're losing one.

Sums it up

Hmm...I think I'll end up waiting to upgrade ESXi until I get the new RAM to put on the servers
This way I can use the maintenance window to do two things at once...
I don't trust vMotion enough to move our production terminal server over without messing up our ERP software

@NathanC Why not?

7:39 PM
@ShaneMadden Because it's rather delicate...it runs off embedded TopSpeed databases that are prone to corrupt at the slightest provocation

@NathanC Ahh. Well only one way to find out if it blows up!

@NathanC "Sorry the ERP system shat itself, imploded, and ate all its data, but I did warn you that might happen... any chance we'll be switching to an ERP system that works now?"
Seems perfectly intuitive and simple to me. I just say "[network guy], add the following rule for me, please..." and it gets added. Like magic... I say it, and it happens.

@ton.yeung It's not that weird, having to explicitly allow outbound traffic from a DMZ

7:56 PM
@HopelessN00b I wish...I so wish.
This software was originally written for DOS
@ShaneMadden Hah..."sorry I caused thousands of dollars in outage costs...oops?"

@NathanC Ever since I've started saying shit like that, I've gotten a lot less work that involves the shitty systems I don't want to touch.

@NathanC Sounds good to me :)

@ton.yeung Just install DD-WRT on everything. It'll be fine.
@MattBear POOOOOOOP

8:11 PM
Has anyone tried PSRemoting to a machine not on a domain?

@cole Um, I have, actually

@MichaelHampton I can't seem to get it to work from my computer to a machine that isn't on the domain.
I'm probably missing something dumb as fuck.

@cole Um, I had some obscure issue that I don't remember what it was right now.

whomp whomp

From the annals (anals?) of my bad engineering jobs...
tell me what's happening there!

8:24 PM
What's up with the 5 port non-uplinked Linksys switch, where's that going?

it's a HUB

oh crap, forget I asked.

because I had some sort of Micom serial multiplexers that needed to use public IPs

Any mods around? Should this go to SO? I don't know puppet's "ask on SO for support" that OP mentions.
@ewwhite I do like the fiber termination. Straight off the cable, no patching for us!

8:27 PM
@jscott Don't migrate crap

@freiheit Gotcha, I'd not voted/flagged or anything.

Gotta love employee desktops that decide to die 10 minutes before i leave for the day...

@jscott I would go with unclear but I have run out of votes

@jscott If Puppet Labs tells people to use SO as a service desk, they should be treated as puppets and be violated by very large fists.

His questions are always interesting.

@ewwhite I really dislike black network cables.

@MarkHenderson same here
I'm ordering red cables now

I don't mind if they are somewhere that they need to be discreet, like under a desk or behind something
But otherwise, they're almost impossible to trace through dark areas and totally uncategorisable

and trying to plan the PDU and other necessary accessories..

I have found that I really like bright pink and bright purple patch cables. It seems to raise people's interest and helps them stick to the colour scheme
Otherwise I think they just see "blue? Blue is meaningless I'll just use a blue for $x"
@Wesley Meow

9:28 PM
@MarkHenderson Hey tool banger.
I can't concentrate. >_<

@Wesley What are you working on?

@MarkHenderson Trying to figure out why this MongoDB instance won't backup with a silent member. My head hurts.

@MarkHenderson MONGoDB

@MarkHenderson What are you working on princess?

Do you guys all use fancy managed PDUs, or just basic ones?

9:34 PM
@Iain Subtle inference. =)

@Wesley Nuking all of a customers jobs and re-importing them because they just cannot for the life of them get the imports correct

@ewwhite My rack has a fancy expensive PDU. Spent way too much money on it.
But it's cool.

This like the 8th time I've done it for them
@ewwhite Basic ones

any failures?

@ewwhite I've never had a fancy PDU fail.

9:34 PM
3
Q: A plan to mitigate PDU failures?

ewwhiteA client just experienced a complete failure of an APC AP7911A switched/metered rack power distribution unit (PDU). This obviously took all of the connected equipment down with it. The equipment is fine, as well as the upstream UPS units. In situations where it's not possible to balance devices ...

I think IPMI has mostly undone the need for fancy PDUs

@Wesley If you didn't have Aussie friends you probably wouldn't get it

Sorry, I've had APC SmartUPSs fail.

@Wesley I received a DOA APC UPS the other day

I had a SmartUPS poop itself. Had to switch cards
@MarkHenderson Well that sucks

9:35 PM
I made sure that "Tested OK" ticket that was stuck to the side was still on it when I sent it back to them
That said, the guy at APC that I dealt with was very good and professional
He even called me back to make sure that the replacement unit was all working OK

@Iain And Germans / Swiss too, apparently.
@MarkHenderson Cool. Good to hear.

@Wesley and UK

@Iain Mongo or mong there?

@Wesley If you ever meet with a Mongo executive you should really ask them if they're aware of their name connontations

@Wesley the latter has connotations

9:40 PM
@MarkHenderson They're Americans. Of course they didn't know; those connotations exist outside of the US aka "Places that don't matter"
:D

@MarkHenderson uh @Wesley is a mongo executive
he executes mongo three, four hundred times a day

@RyJones "Get on your knees and don't turn around! I SAID DON'T TURN AROUND!!"
kill -9 mongod

@RyJones made me lol

Q: Rapid failover from one data center to another when the first goes down?

Mark172I'm building a global CDN and have a DNS service that will direct customers to the closest server. However I need rapid failover if one of the data centers e.g. Germany goes down users need to be instantly served from London. The DNS service I'm looking at provides DNS failover but it requires ...

@ewwhite He's building a global CDN and he's asking how to do it on SF and talking about DNS failover?
Oh my

@MarkHenderson How do people like that get tasked with projects like that.

@Wesley They task themselves I think

He is a shame to the name Mark.

Also unless you have a very, very, very good reason then perhaps you should just use an existing CDN provider
@Wesley There are plenty of people who bring shame to the name of Mark

10:56 PM
@MarkHenderson Isn't it considered a bad thing to be a Mark?
