5:00 PM
@mossy Oh you're married?
I'm here all week!

@Wesley harharharharharharharharharhar

@mossy Did you stick with your plan on getting a little more into development? What was it, PHP?

@Wesley Yeah. And I did, but Diablo 3 expansion came out.
Put on hold for now.
@Wesley PHP was a bad choice.

@mossy Well, at least it's good from the sense of there being a lot of it in the wild, so you'd never be short of jobs.

5:03 PM
I'm intrigued by Laravel

Anonymous
@Wesley why

@PatoSáinz Seems fresh and light.
For PHP that is.

Anonymous
@Wesley do you like electro, by the way?

@PatoSáinz Yeah

5:09 PM
@PatoSáinz Hour long mix. Nice.

Anonymous
enjoy

@PatoSáinz I need something to help me get through my QuickBooks account balancing right now. >_<

@Wesley music and a glass of Pisco?

Umm, is this the main site room?

Anonymous
@AwalGarg maybe probably could be

5:13 PM
@AwalGarg For Server Fault yes

@Iain for discussing the deletion of a room by some mods?

@AwalGarg No.

@HopelessN00b can you tell me which one is it?

@AwalGarg was the room on serverfault ?

This is the room where we talk about penises and boobies. And sometimes computers.

5:15 PM
@Iain on poetry

@AwalGarg then you're in the wrong place

@Iain anyway you can tell me which could be the right place?

How would we know?

thnx bye

It's probably something more poetry-related.

5:16 PM
Wait don't go.

@AwalGarg No idea I'm afraid - perhaps poetry meta or meta.se

(And more to the point, if you're that fucking clueless, why would we want to help inflict your stupidity on someone else?)

Both allow network pass-through of another device such as a printer or workstation. Is this an acceptable solution that won't cause loss of desktop icons

Ahh, sushi delivery. I love the modern world.

5:29 PM
@MichaelHampton "Sushi delivery?" Isn't that just a hipster term for "fishing?"

@HopelessN00b No, fishing doesn't include a sushi chef...

@kce How's your burgeoning XP botnet coming along?

@MichaelHampton "Sushi chef" sounds like another one of those fancy terms for something simple, too. Like "guy with a knife and a dead fish."

roses are red
violets are blue

Dude, between you and @cole's 1000+ XP machines you could make some serious black market bank by renting out access to them all. What's a few million Cialis spam messages when you can pocket some $$$
@MikeyB Dangling inodes are the reason I prefer boxer-briefs.

Where's Ed?

@ChrisS Behind the camera?

@ChrisS What's the story?

Next to the kitchen. Nice.

@Wesley No story, just something for his collection of OMG, WTF IT

@ChrisS Is that in your org, or something you found on The Daily WTF? =P

5:49 PM
@Wesley Found - My rack is fairly well organized.

Oh wow. Oh wowowowow

Q: Is running our workstation network through VoIP handset best practice?

BackPacker777We are purchasing a Cisco UC VoIP phone system and the handsets come in two flavors: 100mb and 1gb. Both allow network pass-through of another device such as a printer or workstation. > Is this an acceptable solution that won't cause loss of desktop icons or slow bandwidth if a call comes in?

Is today over yet?

What does that even mean?!
@cole In Soviet Russia, yes. But so is life.

Gotta love the blinkin lightsen
I should go take some good photos...

@Wesley Means another clueless jackass decided to use ServerFault as an answer machine/free consulting service.

5:52 PM
@NathanC How did you end up on that comment thread suddenly speaking in first person as if you were part of that original post?
EXPLAIN YOURSELF, FIEND! =P

@Wesley er...wha?

We run two lines...depending on the amount of traffic, we didn't want to run into the potential of overwhelming the switches. — Nathan C 22 mins ago
It just seemed like you started talking mid-conversation and I couldn't figure out the flow of the comments.
You said "we didn't want to run into the potential of overwhelming the switches" like you had said something previously in the comment thread, but you hadn't. I got confused.
@NathanC I am not a clever cat.

how to sleep with blinkenlights in your room

Ouch...apparently training for the CISSP exam is $2k
The exam itself is $600...so $1.4k for the training if I wanted it O.o

6:03 PM
@NathanC That's still way less than most training.
Most any IT related course is $2500 to $3500 for 3 to 5 days. Any relevant exam may or may not be included.

God I'm so useless today, even more so than yesterday.

@cole And that's why it's good to be salaried.

@Wesley indeed.
Trying to figure out how to unfuck our file server permissions.
some shit has absolutely no AD domain perms and just the NT4 domain

@cole Ew.

@Wesley yeah and it's a few TBs of shit and lots of folders.
Any......suggestions?

6:05 PM
@cole Fling poo.
But really, I dunno.

@PatoSáinz it's Windows
@Wesley that's my best guess

@cole Everyone: Full Control

@cole Is it more an organization question of "who gets what" or is it a technical issue of how to apply permissions en mass in the proper way?

6:06 PM
problemsolved.jpg

@NathanC good plan

Anonymous
@cole oh i see what your problem is then

@PatoSáinz augh I hate when people are "elitist" about using Linux vs Windows.
Linux and Windows both have their places. End of fucking story. I'm not wave my e-peen around that one is better than the other.

@cole I know. Every OS sucks. It's just a matter of what default filesystem your sucky OS prefers to run on.

@Wesley exactly.

6:07 PM
@cole nuke it from orbit and come up with a new permission policy and apply that.

Uh oh...SQL Server fell over (???)

ctrl + a + delete - solved.

@cole Because determining how to organize files based on organizational needs is really a management decision, and that can be a total mindfuck.

iSCSI targets didn't come up again

@Wesley there's no organization. Good thing is it looks like we're going to move some of the more sensitive data like finance, HR, etc to a different server.
@NathanC you done broke it

6:09 PM
@NathanC EMC?

Years ago I came into a small business that had lots of files from 20 years of operation and the idea was to organize their files and clamp down a little bit on permissions. It became such a cluster that there was just two permissions groups made. Read and read/write. For everything.

@KevinSoviero No...Synology. For some reason Windows isn't automatically connecting them

@Wesley mostly ours are like that

@NathanC Isn't that the consumer brand for homes?

They're fine with it because the alternative is organizing their entire collection of digital assets and that was way more time and effort than they were interested in.
@KevinSoviero Synology is SMB stuff. Same as QNAP.

6:10 PM
@Wesley k

But yes there are Home / SOHO Synology units.

I need a new mouse for work

It's SMB...and it works fine. I can easily connect the targets manually but the fact it doesn't do it automatically when it says it will is a problem

suggestions anddddddd go

@cole Get a laser gaming mouse so you can TF2 at work.
@NathanC Ask @MarkHenderson about his iSCSI QNAP or Synology or whatever. He wants to bash it with a bat.

6:11 PM
I have a Logitech Performance MX right now

@cole I'm a mouse neophyte. I use whatever came out of the box with my computer until it breaks. Right now I have a Apple Might Mouse or whatever it's called. Magic Mouse? Not impressed, but I like the gestures and don't want to buy the big trackpad. So I deal with it.

works pretty well

Way too small for my hand and I have an average sized hand.
No idea how anyone over 6' uses this stupid thing.

@Wesley I do like the Intellimice. If there's anything Microsoft is good at it's rodents.

@NathanC I was looking at those, wasn't sure how solid they were

6:13 PM
They have higher-up ones too if you're so inclined

A: Are ZFS pools or LVM volume groups more reliable for utilizing many partitions?

ewwhiteI use both. ZFS on Linux has been very good to me, but isn't the "fix all" for every situation. A typical server will look like this: (Remember, I usually use hardware RAID and mostly use ZFS as a flexible volume manager) Hardware RAID with a logical volume comprised of underlying disks. That...

the Performance MX is heavy as shit

@cole Amazon.com > Mice > Average Customer Reviews... Done

@cole I like it. Stands up to abuse, has a couple different CPI settings and can be adjusted with the engine tool
I have one of their LED keyboards too

@ChrisS that's fine. I see no problem with it.

6:14 PM
@NathanC I have a Logitech Wave (K350) keyboard at work. I really like it.
At home I have a CM Storm Quickfire TK & CM Storm Spawn mouse.

@cole I have this keyboard at home.

@Wesley then windows uses NTFS

I had a wireless mouse, but I didn't see the need for one with a desktop

@MichaelHampton I like it - I don't get finger fatigue as much. I definitely get way less w/ the Quickfire TK but I think my coworkers would kill me with how loud it is.

@Wesley Also, starred statement is awesome /r/outofcontext material ;)

@ewwhite Your standards are lower than I thought - I'll do better next time.

And yes I have a grandma cat coaster on my desk for my coffee
@NathanC Screw you guys, I'm going home.
=P

@NathanC That's why everyone else starred it as well.

6:17 PM
@ewwhite I spy with my little eye...something that starts with MODEM

@Wesley you love the abuse.

@cole I am a little kinky.

If you only had SSLv2 enabled, then you were vulnerable to the hundreds of OTHER security issues you left yourself open to. Heartbleed is the least of your concerns; your data got out by many other ways which were patched years ago. — Michael Hampton ♦ 2 mins ago
I can't believe I just read this.

@ewwhite Inkjet! The horror!

@ewwhite I feel like I'm going back in time looking at these.

Q: Can I use vodka to clean my keyboard?

user1068446I spilled beer on my keyboard a while back, and some of the keys are sticky. It's driving me crazy, and I don't have any isopropyl. Can I use vodka to clean it?

Have I told you guys how much I hate Solaris lately?

I could run all of this on my phone

@cole do tell

@strugee makes me want to punch myself in the face

6:21 PM
@cole Tell us about it man.

@ewwhite You'll have to jailbreak it first.

@PatoSáinz aw man - I saw this yesterday; I could have gotten stars

@cole No no no, punch your fist with your face. For style.

@ewwhite The top border is a nice touch.

@cole why?
I've never used it...

@strugee there you go

@PatoSáinz \o/

Star all the @strugee things!!

They removed the flash archive option in Solaris 11 (was available in 10) - which made migrations way easier. Now it's going to be much more of a PITA to get this migration going.
OH GOD ALL THE STARS

@MichaelHampton Wasn't that the mid-2000s that browsers started preferring SSLv3? I can't remember the last time I saw a browser that even supported SSLv2

@MikeyB It was a strange produce house of horrors... the client locked me in for the night.

@ChrisS IE6 supports it...

@Wesley yasssssssss

And I think that's about the time we started disabling it.

@MichaelHampton It worries me that you knew so quickly.

6:24 PM
@ChrisS My focus has been web sites for close to a decade.

so just using icacls.exe to look at permissions on this file server - I'm fucked

@cole I am thankful I have no idea what that means.

@cole Most people got rid of NT4 before half the people in this room were born

6:36 PM
@84104 this is our last refresh w/ using Solaris. We're moving to Linux in ~4 years.

@MikeyB I feel like that right now

@cole Hey dude! If you happen to have any of the Sun Type 6 USB keyboards lying around, send 'em my way :D I'll love you forever.

I heard we're moving SAP's application servers to Linux, but they're using VMWare for the linux images for some reason.

@MikeyB I'll check in the back room - just for you.

@cole Mine's approaching... at least 10 years old now.

my life:

Regretting requesting a quote from the infosec institute for training stuff...2 phone calls and a couple emails in the space of an hour

@NathanC whoa

Turn up?

@cole This is after I told them I was only curious about prices...pretty aggressive lol
It's great and all that you really want me to do the training, but my wallet says otherwise. :p

6:41 PM
Had the same thing happen when I wanted a quote from Met Life for life insurance. Had to tell them to stop calling 3 times before they actually stopped.

I got cold called today by somebody trying to convince me he could get me hotel nights cheaper than anywhere else. I almost fell sorry for them when I told them where I work :)

@DennisKaarsemaker I assume you get a better deal than everyone else?

@DennisKaarsemaker LOL - That's priceless!

@DennisKaarsemaker were they like "uh..oh."

@Jacob I get "genius" deals, like normal loyal customers

@DennisKaarsemaker Booking isn't all that popular in the US, but the parent company is huge.

Anonymous
@DennisKaarsemaker do you work at Airbnb?

@Jacob we're growing though. Can't share numbers, but some others are worried :)

@DennisKaarsemaker Booking is owned by Priceline, and they're big here.

true

@Jacob hah. I can quote public statements, and no, parent company isn't huge. We're the majority of the revenue :)
PCLN has more mindshare, because of shatner. But we're advertising as well now

6:45 PM
hey @DennisKaarsemaker, would it be prudent for me to ask you for advice before booking rooms for my sister's wedding in Switzerland?

@DennisKaarsemaker Priceline is the big brand in the US atleast. I see an ad several times for that, and only a few of booking. That and Booking ads are terrible.

@Jacob Expedia is pretty big too

@Basil I can forward that question to our account managers for recommendations. Which city is she looking for?

I go through them for my stuff (which is rare...but eh)

@Jacob My wife was really upset when she tried to browse to Booking.YEAH last week and got an error

6:46 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker It's just me and my wife, and just one room for a few nights

@ewwhite NXDOMAIN

@ewwhite when that ad just aired, someone in marketing urgently requested us to register booking.ye :)

I think that would be too small for a real person to spend time on

but that's not possible (mandatory second level domain)

heh

6:48 PM
@Basil you don't know if you don't ask :)

@DennisKaarsemaker So we had a bedroom discussion about top-level domains...

@ewwhite your love life is pathetic :P

AUGH

Fucking Lotus Notes.

6:49 PM
@cole your love live is more pathetic than @ewwhite's if you're fucking that...

I assumed that Booking registered the yeah gTLD?

@DennisKaarsemaker well, it was regarding the booking of a sex hotel nice place to stay in Seattle for her birthday.

@ewwhite hmm, let me link you to our incoming photostream. Add a "caucasian skin color" filter and you'll find one soon enough...
(seriously, we get some creepy photos...)

@DennisKaarsemaker it's only because film is racist!!!

6:55 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Plz to be sharing.

@DennisKaarsemaker Someone somewhere accepted that challenge and succeeded.
@DennisKaarsemaker In a topic only slightly less related to inappropriate masturbation, did you go to college? Did you get a CompSci degree?

>While that calculator won't help me learn the material, it looks like a great tool to use for checking my answers.
Am I completely out in left field thinking - If you can't learn something from a calculator that produces the right answers, then you probably shouldn't be going into the IT field??

Curious what your experience was in Zee Nederlands Compsci courses.
