@Basil Security Essentials.
@Basil They do both. I just ditched Comodo's firewall after updating to the latest version and having it fuck everything up, and suck hard compared to the previous version anyway.

@Basil When I muck with A/V the only brand I've stuck with over the last several years has been Kaspersky. It's a little heavy handed out of the box, but dial it back a bit and don't use their firewall.

@HopelessN00b How lightweight is it? I tend to not trust Microsoft to make basically functional tools for their own OS

Kaspersky is way lighter than Symantec and McAfee once you get it tamed.

@Wesley I saw that it tested well

@Basil Very lightweight. Running it on my Atom (generation 1) transformer tablet, and don't notice the difference.
@Basil Of the major AV (paid) products, I think Kaspersky's the best too... though it does require some configuration or "taming," as Wesly says.

12:12 AM
ok thanks guys
I'm also trying to remember the name of some software that will index and allow you to archive file shares

@MikeyB I know of a few... but not that reliable. What do you need it for?
@Basil Eset Nod32
@HopelessN00b Err is that sounds bad
chirp chirp
@PatoSáinz Like a proper idiot. Just drop FIPS, that'll do it

@Jacob on mobile client... Can't see what your referencing, so... I dunno.

@HopelessN00b Your comment about being a "dad"

Sex reference. I don't mind it when teenage gals call me "daddy," but I'm not looking for any teenage guys to do it. :p

@HopelessN00b You're not mah dad, and the first part of that still sounds really bad :P

@HopelessN00b you should know ALL of the keywords technologies.

@ewwhite Indeed I should. But I'm lazy, and like alcohol. So, instead, I know just enough to provide me money to pursue my pursuit of alcohol. And laziness. :)

@ChrisS You're just asking for trouble...

@MichaelHampton I know
Just blew the power supply in my workstation... =[
There's magic smoke hanging in the air.

Well, that's why you have a redundant PSU, right?

@ChrisS Is magic smoke what you get from burning magic numbers, or are the two things not related like that?

2:29 AM
No. None of my home gear has redundant power supplies.

@ChrisS Um, a spare then?

@HopelessN00b You get magic smoke from running power supplies near 100% capacity for weeks on end.
@MichaelHampton Nope, ordering one right now.

You can also get magic smoke by flipping the 110/220 switch.

I haven't seen a power supply with a voltage switch in years.

@ChrisS What kind of PSU? I ask because.... I do that, and no magic smoke yet. Well, no accidental magic smoke, anyho.

2:30 AM
@ChrisS Breath it all in, quick! You'll get the magic powers!

@HopelessN00b ThermalTake QuietPower 500W with some Q Fan thing or other. Also several years old (2007-8?).

@ChrisS Hmm. Similar to mine, except for the wattage. Wonder if I should worry or not.

Meh, after 6+ years of abuse I generally expect failure.

So that story about the kid who got his balls squeezed and had a heart attack
There's a comment on the story:
> Let's be real here. You did a lot of dumb stuff when you were 17. That's just high school, everyone does. The only reason that we all weren't this dumb friend is luck plain and simple. I'm not excusing it, but let's take off the revisionist glasses every once in a while and realize exactly why we aren't this guy.
Uhhh, no.
There's dumb stuff, and then there's mental illness and derangement.
That wasn't dumb, that was stupidity to a level that can only be explained by drug abuse or oxygen deprivation.

I've never squeezed any guys balls, not when I was 17, not before, not after.
I do admit I did some dumb stuff in high school, but grabbing balls wasn't on that list, nor anything particularly similar.

2:38 AM
@Wesley How do you do that line/quote thing in chat markdown?

@ChrisS Yeah, I did dumb stuff like some substance experimentation, sneaking out, shoplifting $1 items for a thrill, and riding my bike with no hands.
I did not do things like squeeze people's genitals like that.
@HopelessN00b Make a > sign as your first character on a line.
> This will show as a quote.
Actually > then a space
>This will not work
> This will work!

> I don't think I said why loud enough and enough times. Seriously is this a thing guys do? No other woman has ever been like "let me jokingly shove my hand up your cooch". no no no no.

@HopelessN00b No woman ever? I wouldn't go that far.
I knew some messed up girls when I was a teen.

Wonder why that wasn't working before. Maybe I forgot the space.

Yay for messed up girls!
=P

2:40 AM
@Wesley Only when they have "daddy issues" they wish to resolve with me. =D

@HopelessN00b Right, the messed up girls that stab your dog to death and paintball your car at 2AM aren't the fun ones.

But the point remains valid. Most of the guys I knew in highschool would occasionally play ball-tag. Never met a girl who'd play... um... taco-tag (or w/e) with their female friends.
@Wesley Wow. You had it a little wore than I did. But still, the ones that stab your car and paintball your dog are no fun either.

I think we freaked @ChrisS out and he left. =(

I trying to figure out what PS to buy

@ChrisS We need someone stable and well adjusted to stay with us, otherwise this is going to turn into a sideshow.
Then again, maybe we could charge the other stack exchanges admission to come watch us.

2:44 AM
@ChrisS One with more wattage?

@Wesley I like it! I'll turn on the webcam and drop the boxers.

@MichaelHampton Yes, I might add another video card at some point, so I'm thinking ~800W or slightly more.

@ChrisS Go bigger. I got an 850 for my single video card. (And 12 hard drives, but still...)

@HopelessN00b This is 2x2000-Series Opterons (125W), 1 Radeon (200W), plus the base system (mobo and 1 SSD, so <100W)

Oh, yeah, I suppose 800 would do ya plenty fine.

@dawud Pretty sick.
I need to finish my toast and then go to bed.

go rest, cat

Wait, it's a holiday?
Oh right, now I remember. In the US we only get Sunday off for Easter...

@MichaelHampton Apparently people still get religious holidays (other than Christmas) off in Europe.

For me, yes. But it's not a religious holiday, $COMPANY owes my free days from 2013

@ShaneMadden In the UK this is a 4 day weekend
Friday/Monday are bank holidays

5:52 AM
Of course, in the US, Easter is all about... painted eggs and rabbits?

@Iain I guess I get Friday, but Monday seems excessive.

@ShaneMadden Time off always seems excessive to Americans. =P

This is a week for catholic religious celebration here, you can come across guys dressed like this:

@Wesley I don't complain about getting Monday off when July 4 or Dec 31 falls on a Sunday, mind you. Just seems really strange for a religious holiday to get a 4 day weekend

Q: Custom domain, DNS A Record Breaking old URL Paths

user3547723I'm working on for a client and we created a website using a CMS template called Virb.com (sort of like squarespace.com). To get his custom URL to link to his new website, we needed to change an A record on his DNS that Virb gave us (IP ADDRESS). That worked fine. 'mywebsite.virb.com' now goes ...

Is DNS really that hard?!

@ShaneMadden I don't believe in $deities but I'm not complaining

@Iain Fair enough!

I am going to have no voice tomorrow. Hockey game tied up with 13 seconds left then won in overtime.

@ShaneMadden Go rangers.

@ShaneMadden oh, yeah, fine tradition that one :/

@Wesley George won't be happy with you :)

@ShaneMadden I'm happy, all three California teams are in the playoffs!

@dawud Haha, well.

5:59 AM
Poor coyotes. Missed the wild card by two points. =(

@Wesley We'll see how it goes. I think Anaheim wins the west, but they didn't look so unbeatable last night.

@ShaneMadden Yeah, I'm sure it'll be Avs vs Ducks for the west, but I think Colorado has a better chance of taking it. Ducks are streaky.
If I had to call it, I'd say Avs vs Penguins for the cup.

oh dear PhD students getting pissed because their questions got downvoted - since when have PhD students wo don't have control over their environment even been in the church of SF ?

@Wesley I don't like the Avs chances if St. Louis beats Chicago, frankly. St. Louis has had their number.

@Iain Tee hee, the latest meta post?

6:02 AM
@Wesley yeah

@ShaneMadden Chicago has that cup-dust to snort though! Maybe if they rub all over it before a game they'll get magic powers.
Barely helped them in the regular season though. =P

@Wesley That's certainly worth a shot.

Speaking of beating hard rubber things with sticks, hello @Skyhawk

@Iain This is America. After a 20-minute medevac flight ($19,500) I was in the hospital for exactly six hours ($3,348.47), long enough to get a "Rad Diagnostic" ($1,656.51), a "Rad CT Scan" ($2,782.59), "IV Therapy" ($548.86), my own "Laboratory" ($322.74), and "Pharmacy" ($86.62). Doctor/nurse services will be billed separately, as will the ambulances.

@Skyhawk Yikes. How's the health insurance treating you?

Shit. You could have bought an ambulance and drove yourself to the hospital.

@Iain Once they determined that my neck was not broken, they took me off the backboard and cleaned and dressed my wounds and said I could go. At this point I reminded them that my clothes had been removed with scissors.
@MichaelHampton Except for the fact that I was unconscious.

6:17 AM
I don't get the medevac part. Where in hell were you when this happened?

@MichaelHampton I was going to say something but I didn't want to fan the embers.

Because I hate you all and want you to cry

@voretaq7 did you get your perl issue sorted - what caused it ?

@MichaelHampton North end of the red line. Note water between me and Seattle. strava.com/activities/125512576

@Iain Don't talk to me about Perl. That camel is DEAD to me. Goddamn fucking heisenbug-ridden mangy son of a terrorist and a llama....

@Iain (that'd be a "no")

@voretaq7 bummer :(

@Iain I'm going to pull one of the DBI servers that manifested the "strangeness" out of the load balancer tomorrow and re-image it to the "broken" software to try to reproduce the problem - it's about the only thing left I can think to try.

@Skyhawk I don't know what the road surface is like there but the scenery sure looks good

6:21 AM
on the bright side our crappy code is less crappy than OpenSSL.... wait how's that a bright side? aw fuck it, pass the debugging tequila

@ShaneMadden Claim status [Pending]. They can change it to [Paid] or [You'll have to sue us], their choice. America.

@Skyhawk They just need a really long floating bridge.

@Skyhawk ...fun.

@MichaelHampton The one that I crossed shortly before crashing is one of the longest, already.

@Skyhawk I'm familiar with the I-90 floating bridge, and I thought I heard about one on 520 too opening recently. Didn't know about any others.

6:24 AM
@MichaelHampton To cross the bigger piece of water, we ride on faeries.
@MichaelHampton Hood Canal.
@MichaelHampton "At 7,869 feet (2,398 m) long, (floating portion 6,521 feet (1,988 m)) it is the longest floating bridge in the world located in a saltwater tidal basin, and the third longest floating bridge overall." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood_Canal_Bridge
@MichaelHampton The 520 bridge already exists, it's just getting ready to sink. Which the other two already have done, once each.
@MichaelHampton We also had the world's most suspension bridge collapse, famous because the event was captured on film by my grandfather.

why do you live way the hell out there on the other side of the sound?

since when have canals been that wide ?

@Skyhawk Ahh. I watched that on YouTube not too long ago.

@FalconMomot I don't. I was on a week-long bike trip.

6:31 AM
aah

@FalconMomot Or would have been, had my tire not failed.

ouch
I have known people to carry spare inner tubes for their bike tires on tours.
(perhaps @Wesley might know something about that, if he would only buy a bike)

@FalconMomot I carry two every time I go cycling

@FalconMomot Of course I carry a spare tube and a pump. Doesn't help much when the failure happens at 27mph and your next memory is coming to, strapped to a backboard in an ambulance on the way to a helipad, with paramedics asking you to please remember that Mickey Mouse is a mouse.

well, glad to see you're not the useless kind of zombie.

Hard Truth: I respect what OpenBSD is doing to OpenSSL's shitty code, but I worry the slash & burn approach will hurt adoption of their work
then again, anything which seeds the fucking random number generator with your private key deserves to be slashed, burned, reconstituted into a charcoal briquette, burned again, have the ashes scattered in a field, and doused with holy water from firefighting aircraft.
@ShaneMadden That's really kinda unfair to GnuTLS....
I mean GnuTLS sucks, but I don't think they're THAT braindamaged

If only we could compare Microsoft's code side by side.

@Skyhawk MS only has to work on Windows - a lot of this crap is cross-platform fuckwittery
(not the key-as-entropy thing though. That's just "Find the person responsible and publicly execute them".)

@voretaq7 that's easy! just git blame err, wait these guys still use CVS ....

@dawud to hide their shame!
(behind a bigger shame!))

@voretaq7 Really, the amusing angle was "No, $client, there's no need to panic. You're using [IIS|Exchange]. Everything is fine. All of your vulnerabilities are as yet unpublished."

6:49 AM
Meanwhile, at Microsoft Headquarters....

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK....Quick apply the patch and slip it into Patch Tuesday before anyone realizes!

@voretaq7 Right. They're definitely looking like the lesser of two evils these days.

@ShaneMadden eh... I wouldn't go that far.
gnuTLS is pretty grotty too

@voretaq7 Heh, fair enough.

it just has a WAY smaller adoption footprint (so nobody motivated to go on a Valhalla Rampage)
I mean on the one hand I wish Theo wasn't such an asshat and was doing this stuff in a delicate, compatibility-preserving way. On the other hand the OpenSSL team can still look at these posts and fix their shit!

OK, time to clean the dust from my OpenBSD laptop, I guess.

6:54 AM
@voretaq7 We'll see... hopefully the lesson sticks.

@voretaq7 Based on what I've seen, I think being an asshat is perfectly appropriate.

@Skyhawk I don't agree. Working WITH the openssl team to ensure these fixes get merged upstream is the responsible thing to do. It ensures the greatest number of people will benefit from the work, and improves internet security as a whole. (Of course if the OpenSSL team refuses or stonewalls on integration, then by all means fork, slash, and burn.)
The net result of this is now we have OpenSSL, GnuTLS, and this new OpenBSD thing and people have to decide which is best at any given moment
(and I don't know that the OpenBSD thing will be portable enough to get adopted outside of OpenBSD -- which would really suck)

@voretaq7 You're forgetting that, for all we know, half the vulnerabilities in OpenSSL are latter-day Clipper chips.

@Skyhawk please, no tinfoil hat conspiracy theories.
never attribute to vast conspiracy what can be adequately explained by shitty developers
2

@voretaq7 I get it, but it would be naive to assume that the OpenSSL team is not compromised when the intelligence community views genuinely effective encryption as a threat to national security. Of course they would do that.

7:05 AM
@Skyhawk The NSA has a dual mandate - they're supposed to promote the use of truly effective encryption for US interests. Plenty of banks and the like use OpenSSL.
for that matter it would be naive to assume that there aren't spooks on the OpenBSD team, or the GnuTLS team, or inside the TOR community, or....

@voretaq7 Correct.

Operating on that assumption leaves you with only two choices:

1) Send everything in cleartext, because all encryption is broken.
2) Send nothing. Ever.

Isn't TOR overtly funded by the US government? Of course it is.

EVERYTHING is overtly funded by the US government if you look deep enough

Right. But imagine, if you will, that you are one person and you just want it fixed.

7:07 AM
the budget is ungodly thousands of pages long :)
@Skyhawk that sort of thinking usually ends in re-implementing your own crypto engine (which is almost always more bug-ridden than any of the existing ones)

@voretaq7 could you add developer in here or you are an enthusiast or user with a general learning... e.g. or you are developer, enthusiast or user with a general learning ... ?

@Iain WISH. GRANTED.

@voretaq7 Well, right. So, of all the options available to Theo, he has chosen the one that has the greatest near-term benefit to his project, both in terms of bugfixery and in terms of needed publicity. I can't fault him for that.

@voretaq7 such a wonderful fayerie modfather :)

@Skyhawk Equal near-term benefit could be had by fixing the bugs without the zealotry (nuking FIPS, gratuitously breaking Windows compatibility), and merging the changes upstream has more potential for long-term benefit because they can still use OpenSSL mainline development
(though if the quality of the OpenSSL codebase doesn't improve substantially perhaps NOBODY should be using their mainline development...)

7:15 AM
@voretaq7 No question. Long-term, it has serious downsides. But the gadfly aspect is too beautiful to ignore.

I totally respect why the OpenBSD folks are doing this the way they're doing it - I just don't think it serves the greater good of internet security ("Great, your OpenBSD box is secure. Every other box it talks to is leaking keys so you're still fucked.")

Hypothetically speaking, if you were primarily an evangelist for your own platform's adoption, that would be dreamy.

@voretaq7 still about ?

@Iain for about 10 minutes :)

Sweet dreams.
Thanks for sharing such tasty links & opinions.

yes
Catholic one, as in Holy Day
So was yesterday

@dawud for many yesterday was a half day

8:16 AM
today and Monday are holidays here
and today it is illegal to dance in Germany

no way

@faker how is that policed?

@Iain if you have a bar or other venue and you play music you will get fined
it is being enforced

ouch!
So, is the ban on dancing or on playing music ? Can you play music that can't be danced to ?

@Iain the style of music doesn't matter. If you are playing anything and there is room to dance, then it's illegal

8:25 AM
interesting

so normal seated restaurants are fine, but even a bar where people are standing are closed today
it's crazy because government and church should be separated and the only reason for this ban is religious. But every attempt to stop it failed

@Iain It's a holiday here too, but many grocery stores will be open though not much else.

@faker If you play music...
Uh.
Can supermarkets play music? :P

@Bob Yes, because any EMP generator I could bring to stop them would also take out the checkouts
