...turns out a Hyper-V Win10 guest doesn't try to make you create a MS account. Interesting.
In fact, I don't think it lets you

@BigHomie Indeed. Today, more than most days, I'm regretting having my job.

@Bob 0_0
Thats an interesting feature

There is something that not many people seem to realize about how your personal email can get sucked into a lawsuit filed against your company. It all comes down to ediscovery......

@Bob Did you have networking working at that point in setup? That's what it does if it can't call home.

Bob
@ChrisS Hm. That's probably it -_-
I feel dumb now :P
Created the virtual switch after setup

2:15 PM
I wish that was the default. I hate having to do the "I don't have an account, sign me up" followed by "Nah, faked you out" ever time I do a manual setup.

Bob
Ah well, now I can play with Hyper-V :D
Hm. Second bsod so far. This is a very not supported system :D

@Bob Heh, a Win10 guest behaved okay in a VMware Player session for me
A friend of mine installed it on his laptop as the main OS...

Bob
@NathanC Oh, that's not the not-supported part

@Bob I don't think VM-within-a-VM is supported period
lol

@Bob Is that 3 or 4 VMs deep?

2:22 PM
Hmmm.... less than a day to figure out, and write a script for, deploying BitLocker FDE to all the laptops in the enterprise. Doable, or should I just give up now and get a jump-start on the weekend's drinking?

Bob
@ChrisS Just two :(

@HopelessN00b GPO and forget it?

Bob
Briefly considered sticking VirtualBox and Qemu in there, but I'd rather not actually melt something

lol

Bob
It'd also be doing full software emulation, since I don't think Hyper-V can do VT-x passthrough

2:25 PM
@ChrisS Enh, except that you can't use a GPO to actually encrypt drives with BitLocker. Something of a major oversight, if you ask me.

@NathanC for a whole year or per month? if first: nice, i need a lot more of that, if for a month: wtf are you mining dogecoins?

@DennisNolte 556 KWh was for 29 days of use
Apartment with 6 people
It was over 700 KWh over the summer because of AC
Oh hey...my A+ certification was supposed to expire next year (took it in 2012), but it was extended to 2017 because of my Network+

@HopelessN00b Correct, you can only manage the settings for bitlocker with GPO (and you should)
triggering the actual encryption.. dunno, we do it on reinstalls with MDT

@HopelessN00b I think they just didn't want to hand you a gun already pointed at your foot.... But it's pretty easy to enable the BitLocker recovery key and TPM backups to AD, then If ((Get-BitLockerVolume -MountPoint C:).ProtectionSttaus -eq 'Off') {Enable-BitLocker -MountPoint "C:" -EncryptionMethod Aes256 -TpmProtector} (I think that only works on Win8, I think you have to use VBScript in Win7) in a startup script.

@pauska Looks like it's gonna be Manage-BDE for me... and sadly, not all that difficult, so I can't give up and go drink. :(

2:36 PM
CompTIA's renewal stuff is confusing...

@ChrisS You can do it on Win7 if you have WMF/PS 4 installed, which I don't think we do on all our laptops... so it's Manage-BDE, which does work with WMF/PS 3.0.

@NathanC remembers me that i need to take another LPIC soon..

Yeah, manage-bde works pretty well. Was my goto tool until the powershell stuff.

I still wanna not do it on principle. CIO/CTO/head IT dude wanting all laptops encrypted with about 2 days notice. That's got "success" and "totally reasonable" written all over it. :/

Depends on how well managed and accessible your laptops are.... If they're connected to the network and all, you can get the GPO to configure key backup out right away. Then you need to warn people that they're getting encrypted, during encryption they'll only have 5GB of free space on their HD. Then actually doing it, again if well connected shouldn't be all that bad. Of course, if these laptops are rarely connected to the network I'd tell you're boss "not gonna happen".
I suppose it sounds less daunting when you've been running BitLocker for years already...

2:48 PM
@ChrisS Sounds like a list of all the things no one bothered to think about before deciding this has to be done now. It's cool though, as a not-insignificant part of me is kinda rooting for failure here.

It's not a long list of "requirements", but it's mandatorily sequential.. Skipping the backup policy, for example, will F-CK YOU HARD down the road.

I agree with ChrisS
make sure your bitlocker settings are set, tested and working before you enable anything at all

we lost hundreds of laptops to full disk encryption being pushed out willy nilly

@pauska Yeah, not an option I'm being given. So... like I said, it's got "success" written all over it.

better yet, lots of engineers had dual-booted so they had linux and windows partitions. all those linux partitions were nuked

2:55 PM
ow

Legacy BIOS update packages do not support specifying a BIOS password when a BIOS password is already set on a system. Instead the BIOS password must be cleared using the Dell Client Configuration Toolkit (CCTK).
hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh

Yo, I have a client that is currently on register.com that wants a website. Anyone here able to recommend a decent website builder tool that a non-web guy can figure out that makes a semi-decent site/
?

Is there such a thing?

@TheCleaner wordpress

Anyone by chance got a alternate part for this:

i seem to not find it somewhere in .de buyspace.

@DennisKaarsemaker You like HP... what's your thought on this?

Q: Drive faults not logged in HP IML on RHEL-based ProLiant server

jimbobmcgeeToday I have had disks on two separate HP ProLiant servers go into Predictive Failure. One of these servers runs Windows Server 2008 R2 and one runs Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 (a RHEL5-based distro). If I look in the Integrated Management Logs for these servers, the Windows server has a 'Caution...

that was the second hit on google..

@pauska ye, the issue is with location not in germany. I dislike the idea of having that server not working for ~2+ weeks.

@RyJones It's just a basic presence page needed. Maybe 3 or 4 pages with links (about us, contact us, etc.). Register.com offers their "basic hosting" for $5.95/month. You think squarespace is worth the $8/month instead?

3:07 PM
but paying 100$ for express is kinda not my thing either.

@TheCleaner I apologize for answering your question.

3:27 PM
morning

@TheCleaner two more dollars per month? is that a real question?

I got my 4th yearling badge. Time flies when you are cynically chatting with other sysadmins!

ok @Wesley I found a non-BS answer of yours to put you over 20k. You're welcome.
2

@RyJones You really had to go on an expedition, eh? :P

the funny thing about that answer is I was just having the same discussion with a developer yesterday. it was apache, not iis, but the spirit is the same
@Wesley I was going to expand that idea on how many pages back I had to go, but then I got bored

4:24 PM
Sometimes I go on trawling expeditions and sort by accepted answers with zero up votes. Quick sanity check to make sure it's not "I just chmod -R 777 and it worked" and upboat.
Huh, I thought there was a 30,000 point privilege / milestone too: serverfault.com/help/privileges?tab=all
Guess not.

I thought chmod -R 777 was the solution to all problems

Welp, I'm done with ServerFault. Been nice! leaves
@RyJones Fortunately some daemons bonk hard if files are 777.
If you really want to fix all the things, chmod -R 4777 /

@Wesley I just put a wrapper on some stuff and it caught someone trying to sneak by last night. I'm pretty happy

@RyJones Oh wow, cool.

@Wesley It was gratifying. Now, I must shower and head off to work

4:29 PM
I made an ugly one liner last night that searches the most recent apache logs for 404s, and sorts them by the most common ones so I can see which pages on my side-client's site should be there but aren't.
@RyJones Cleanse thyself.

4:43 PM
Heh, according to Credit Karma, if I make a $1000 payment on a card, my credit score will go down 15 points
As does having an on-time payment history for 2 more years...hmm...something's a bit wonky.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize I had Elizabeth I's Domain Controller...

kce
@Wesley 20k. Congrats!

Fact: The Ottoman Wars were caused by a squire standing up a domain controller and using ottoman.local
@kce ty, ty

Installing update 4 of 152...aww hell no

5:08 PM
@tombull89 new system install?

5:22 PM
@NathanC credit karma = crap
ok... so I'm trying to understand something Cisco related
I have a remote office on a 10.0.0.0/24 subnet
Went to add a VPN tunnel to one of my azure networks, it's 10.0.0.0/22

@NathanC One of my cards gives you your actual FICO score, and I've found it compares closely to creditkarma @MattBear

overlapping subnets, but the azure network actually only uses 10.0.1.0-10.0.3.0
So I created the objects, ACL's and cryptomap
and it's just working...
shouldn't it of not connected because of the overlap?

@RyJones My discover card does that...and it's about 30 points off the creditkarma score

@RyJones Was buying a car a few months ago, 50 pt different between credit karma and actual score

My score went up when I disputed a transunion mistake...they had the wrong credit limit so I was being dinged for high utilization

5:28 PM
actually more like 100 pt's

@ChrisS I expect to see that at work soon. The strangeness of working on a college campus.

@NathanC Well, remember that a credit score is a rough measure of how valuable a person you are to lend to. If you're in debt up to your eyeballs and there's a risk you won't be able to pay, that's bad for them. If you pay stuff off before lenders can turn a profit on you, that's also bad for them.

6:00 PM
My goal right now is to buy a house by June of next year, So I'm working on getting my credit score up

I remember the good old days, in my teens and early twenties, when I didn't have to worry about getting it up. Life sure sucks as you age.

Do you regularly do things that would negatively affect your credit score??

@HopelessN00b heh I got it up this morning ;)

So..I'm being told to move from the East > West coast it's going to cost me about $10K

@cole BS, sell all your shit, drive your car out, buy new shit

6:05 PM
@cole I shall mock you a second time

total cost... $400 in gas

I'm just saying - that's what someone just told me they spent.
And I'm like - that.....doesn't sound correct.

@MattBear shower at truck stops, sleep in car

Curious how one would do that with a pet.

@cole I moved from Moscow, Idaho to Seattle, Washington and it cost Microsoft about 30 grand

6:06 PM
@RyJones drive straight through, don't shower, 26-28 hours

@RyJones wow

@cole what kind of pet?

@MattBear cat.

@cole get rid of it, get another, cats are free

@MattBear no way man.
He's my BFF

6:08 PM
@cole all cats are the same... And they breed so damn fast, if they weren't cute and fluffy, they would be considered a plague
@cole the new one will be too, and you wont even notice a difference

Trust me, I would.

@cole maybe for like 2 days

Mixed message...

@cole Cost me almost 5 k to move less than a mile.

@HopelessN00b wtf

6:24 PM
Depends how much stuff you have and how well you plan/coordinate it, but 10k to move cross-country is not outrageous or anything. It could probably be done a lot cheaper, but not necessarily an unreasonable cost.

kce
@cole West Coast is Best Coast. DOOO IT.

Wrong Coast.

@HopelessN00b $10k sounds like the approximate cost for "you pack up your stuff and pay somebody else to load it into a truck and drive it across the country" (while you fly or maybe do a road-trip to move your car)

I moved across town for the price of a pizza.

kce
@MichaelHampton Yeah but you live in NEW HAMSPHIRE.

6:27 PM
I just got an email for a job in NH

kce
You're like the lame of Alaska of the East Coast except with Dunkins Donuts.

@kce Yeah, and? At least we aren't half a day's flight from civilization.

kce
It's nice being away form civilization? Have you seen civilization recently? She really let herself go.

@kce Yeah, I noticed.

@kce Sure, but she's holding all the good beer!

6:29 PM
mmm beer.

kce
@MichaelHampton Nah. I didn't realize you lived in Manchester until just now. I have buddy who works at the Budweiser plant there. He has words about NH...

@MichaelHampton I live a bit north of you, apparently :P
When i moved out of my grandparents house it cost me less than $100 for the moving truck to go 50 miles, lol
of course, it's much easier when you don't have multiple vehicles, pets, and a shitload of furniture...
Someone I knew sold everything they had and moved to New Zealand a few months ago...

Yes, it's much easier to move cash than furniture.

@MichaelHampton sell all your shit, buy new shit on craigslist or something when you get there.
or sell all your shit, save the 10k, and buy all new nice shit when you get there

The only furniture I kept the last time I moved was my nice desk and chair. Got a friend to move it in his SUV and bought pizza.

6:49 PM
Can someone confirm that dogs are just white people practice children

@JoelESalas no, cause white people actually want dogs :p

ok so no confirmation. I'll continue evolving the theory
I told one woman that her dogs were just "practice children that don't go to college" and she actually agreed

@JoelESalas maybe with women...
evolve the theory from "white people" to "all women", and you got it

this is the small-and-useless variety of dog
just to be clear

@JoelESalas the "canine as an accessory"?

6:53 PM
@MattBear slash practice child, pretty much. Tons of toys and accessories and shit
like any expedition with the dogs requires a solid hour of planning

@JoelESalas then yes, but don't include men in that... :p
I like dogs...
but I like dogs to be dogs
I want one of these lol
120 lbs of terrier
try putting that in your purse :p

That's a big fucking terrier.

7:09 PM
@JoelESalas yeah... waiting until I have space for one, have a Queensland now

@MichaelHampton Of course, customs agents and government in general are far more likely to steal your cash than your furniture, so there's that.

@HopelessN00b that cant get it if you invest wisely.... Like in hookers

@MattBear Oh, they'll always find a way. Government is the most persistent kind of crook.

:18040662 do you want that?

When some sites I visit dont work properly without javascript... just ... web developers what are you doing

7:24 PM
@HopelessN00b Let's go Krogering

@Wesley welcome to quicker delete votes

I was just about to buy a disk I have been meaning to buy for at least 2 weeks goes on the website ... out of stock goddamnit

7:49 PM
ugh installing firefox 23 so some stupid plugin will work

@Iain pew pew

I'm sure this guy has a really interesting problem to solve but I wish he'd tell us what the actual problem is rather than how he thinks he needs to solve it serverfault.com/questions/634263/… and serverfault.com/questions/634079/layer-7-dns-altering-solutions (10k)

@RyJones ouch. But it probably still works better than Firefox 32.
I see the new CoC pretty much calls for a uniform pollyanna. So I'm just going to vote to close everything.

ok, im kinda giving myself a crash course in Cisco shit
how do I generate a pre-shared IKE key?

@Magellan I agree, VTC FTW

8:01 PM
@Magellan unless you're TT it's business as usual

@Iain Tourist Trophy?

@Magellan Tom Tom

@Iain uh, that's definitely not how that reads. #2 requires that I "bring my sense of humor". 30,000 shit questions on the front page burnt that out awhile ago.

Q: DNS changes affect on wordpress websties.

Vincent YuanI bought my domain name on 1&1 and has the domain connected to a website one wordpress. Recently I wanted to activate their email services with our domain but it requires that we change our DNS settings to their own name servers. If i perform that action, will that affect our website? Will I have...

8:16 PM
@Magellan Apparently, that's not nice either.

A: Proposed new code of conduct for all Stack Exchange sites

Steve CohenSpeaking for myself, I find the quick and silent downvote of a question by the people who run these sites to be the total antithesis of "nice". It's one thing to downvote newby questions that are clearly someone asking for answers to their homework, but it's used far too often on other occasions...

@Magellan Those are clearly oxfords, not boots!

@Magellan did you hear? I'm scouting an ops guy for a cloud app.

Q: Office 365 - what is in the "Sensitive Word List" for spam filtering?

TheCleanerIn Office 365 you can toggle a few settings to help with spam email filtering. Among these is a setting to enable a "Sensitive Word List" as shown below: The problem is...I can't find any list on Technet or elsewhere online showing what this list actually contains. It isn't editable, and isn...

I got an "example list" from MS...but I'm guessing I can't post it as the examples...yes no???
@ChrisS?
I could post an "image" instead of the actual words...but I might still be banninated...they are worse than what I'd expect @HopelessN00b to say here.

We're all grownups... I'm sure everyone's seen the "word" "v14gr4" before.

Bob
@TheCleaner Post it base64'd? :P

let's just say the example list is more of a "porn most don't even search for when nobody is home".
I was laughing when the female tech support person was actually naming off words on the list.

Bob
@TheCleaner You can't say that without examples! :P

@Bob expires in 10 minutes: pastebin.com/d0Lby7b6
Like I said...I couldn't help laughing, her Indian accent when she read off 4 or 5 of those words and explained why they'd be blocked as spam was cracking me up.

Bob
9:52 PM
@TheCleaner Huh. Most of those are... rather benign.

@TheCleaner im traumatized

Bob
I can't talk about Paridae? :(

@Bob you must be a /b/tard

@Bob Most yes...a few though I had to look up...I live a very sheltered life I guess and they didn't exactly sound appealing lol.
@MattBear sorry...next time I'll link pics instead of words.

Bob
@TheCleaner You looked them up?

9:54 PM
@TheCleaner link vids

@MattBear :)

any Cisco ish guys here?

Bob
@TheCleaner I wonder if it's a tad oversensitive

@Bob curiosity...I typed them in urbandictionary...figured that was safe enough to not get me any crazy images, etc. Not that my mind didn't immediately go "wtf?

Bob
@MattBear Never actually bothered visiting that site.
@TheCleaner At least one of the words there... 1107 matches in words
I wonder if you can send emails about titles and substitutions

9:57 PM
@Bob don't... at one point it had some funny stuff, now its all "wincest/gore/lolicon/(alpha)(beta)males" crap
oh and traps...

Bob
@MattBear Traps?
@TheCleaner Maybe you wanted to complain to HR about a coworker's attitude
whoops, no email for you

@Bob think "dude looks like a lady"

Bob
@MattBear Ah.

@TheCleaner Where did that pastebin go? I was using that...

10:39 PM
@TheCleaner OK, the official word from SE is: Post the actual list on an external site, and link to it in your answer with a huge NSFW warning.

10:56 PM
@TheCleaner I wanna see!
Look, @MarkHenderson expresses his affection by calling me a cunt. What could be said in here that would really be shocking?
That is affectionate, right? =(
@RyJones I'll never forget you. You were my 20,000th. #WiltChamberlain
@mossy How's was work, dear?
Still okay being a racker?

Work was good.
Long days

@Wesley fuckin cunt

@MarkHenderson <3
@mossy Yeah I can imagine. The first three months are a meat grinder.

i walked in on some of the open stack people today and asked them to sign my mouse pad
