@Zoredache `I use denyhosts
where would I find openssh 6.7?

@ewwhite You probably won't see it for years :)

I do need something that fixes the ControlMaster bug for multiplexing

@ewwhite Was that fixed at all?

@MichaelHampton there were proposals
and some RPMs available

@ewwhite I admit I don't remember what the bug was.

A: Reuse remote ssh connections and reduce command/session logging verbosity?

ewwhiteAn update... I've solved this on my RHEL/CentOS EL6 systems by leveraging the SSH ControlMaster feature: On the connecting host's /home/username/.ssh/config file: Host * ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/sockets/%r@%h-%p #ControlPersist 600 The ~/.ssh/sockets/ directory needed to be crea...

It might be in Debian Jessie when it releases, they still have a few weeks before the freeze. If it gets into Debian Jessie it will almost certainly make it into the latest release next release of Ubuntu.

@ewwhite Oh, you just wanted ControlPersist? That was added in 5.6, you'll have it in RHEL 7

@MichaelHampton I don't wanna have RHEL7!!

@ewwhite Yes you do!

EL6 is finally working oh-so-nice...

12:16 AM
And EL7 is oh-so-nicer

I'm in the middle of upgrading joelEsalas to CentOS6, and it feels GOOD.

I kinda just want to quit my job tomorrow.

Have you got enough fuck-you money?
3

@MichaelHampton no :(
I wish I did.

Have you been hired elsewhere?

12:17 AM
@cole your always wanting to quit your job :p
2

@MattBear we're down to like 2 people
My manager sent out that email about being on time for work/leaving on time/not calling out constantly on Friday.
Monday both coworkers were late and left at 3:15PM.
Today one called out and the other left at 3:45PM.
I just want to slam my face into my desk.

@MichaelHampton Freedom is having F-U money.

><
And let me guess, they're both good friends with the manager?

@NathanC only one.
Mind you - I said nothing to my manger about any of this at all. Not sure who did and why he sent the email. I've not complained once.

@cole Go to your manager's manager then :P

12:19 AM
@NathanC did that months ago.
It's just gotten worse.

Sounds like it's time for a follow-up...

You need another job, yesterday.

@MichaelHampton I'm sure he's been looking, heh

@MichaelHampton I know, been applying like crazy.
Literally willing to take a $10K-$15K pay cut at this point.
I've had a constant headache for 3 weeks.

12:33 AM
@cole go to the gym, play some vidya games, and don't give a shit, its a paycheck :p

@MattBear I go to the gym every morning before work.
I'm on call 24/7

@cole same here, and I go after work, it's a paycheck though, so I don't care about the BS

@MattBear my group is responsible for 87 sites worldwide.

we have an espresso machine, so it's worth it!

Getting woken up because Japan got a bounce back email because they mispelled someone's email address at 3AM gets exhausting.

12:36 AM
I seriously need to talk to someone who knows cisco shit btw :-/

@cole Is your help desk 24/7? Are the level 1 techs unable to resolve typos before escalating?

@jscott yes, they are all non-technical.

I'm so sorry.

It's frustrating.
It's more frustrating while my manager continues to dump work on me while my other two coworkers come in late/leave early/do nothing

Our level 1s are "technical" but they still let a ton of L1 issues bubble up for some reason. I would have had a fit over a off-hours call for a typo though.

12:40 AM
That's what bothers me the most. If we were all sharing the load - I probably wouldn't be so stressed/exhausted.
@jscott I get called for dumb shit all the time.
WHO THE FUCK IS LIGHTING FIREWORKS OFF
It's a fucking Tuesday night.

If you've brought that to your manager and they can't balance the load, that's a problem.

@jscott I have, he doesn't seem to give a shit.
I've brought it to the Senior Manager as well.
I've literally done everything but threaten to quit - which I don't want to do, because I feel like that's childish.

Ten years ago it could totally be possible I was the guy lighting off fireworks on a Tuesday night.

Well fuck past you.
3

@cole Well then, if they can't see the problems you know what to do. Move on as soon as you can find something acceptable.

12:42 AM
@jscott trying very hard

@cole Indeed.
Hang in there.

I threw up because I feel so exhausted and sick from the stress.
and I'm going to bed now
Night

12:57 AM
I love netflix.

"Configure QoS" for a $100 please Alex.

You can't configure QoS on a PoS.

Bob
@NathanC 92% packet loss. Looks nice.
Hey, at least you're dealing with Netflix.
I have to deal with PPTV.

1:12 AM
@jscott No QoS available...
Best I have is WMM, and it didn't help.

Bob
@NathanC No QoS?
What's your networking equipment?

@Bob Nope, it's a shitty Ubee modem from time warner...
It's okay, I was only just kicked off again (chat kept throwing errors)

Bob
$40 will get you something capable of basic QoS

@Bob One person is streaming right now...and it's fully buffered. Still shitty pings. I think it's our area during peak hours..

Bob
Ah.

1:24 AM
#1 reason cable sucks ass

Bob
Yea, that'd suck.
As much as I complain about ADSL, at least I get a dedicated line to the exchange.

Heck, my 4g data connection is better than cable right now

lol

@Bob: My experience with cable wasn't too bad
though fibre beats it up and takes its lunch money

Bob
1:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Depends how oversold the area is.

@Bob: out here I think its shared per building

Well, we live in a "community" ...basically a whole bunch of townhouses in an area
so, their exchange is probably getting pummeled around this time...I mean, I have to use google's dns to be online...
lol, i switched to tethered and battle.net kicked me out and locked my account

1:57 AM
Soo I'm connected to an ASA via one of those rollover serial cables and a USB to serial dongle, and I'm getting garbled output like this:
Dodgy cable? I don't think it's the baud rate because I can see some of the data

bad cable it looks like
Windows doesn't really like my usb tether...it hangs on the network/sharing center and clicking any of the options, lol

The only thing I could make out was that this ASA has 750 SSLVPN users
Which is fucking sweet

@TheCleaner Word lists aren't "offensive", unless you're trying to be offensive.
@MarkHenderson Wrong baud more likely than not.

@MarkHenderson Sup harble waggler?

You know the modem's shit when it restarts on its own...

2:11 AM
@Wesley Got these two ASA5520's from ebay
Got RAM upgrade coming tomorrow so I can get the latest software onto them but for the moment just wanna check that they're what i paid for
Looks like I got more than I paid for

I love eBay. =]
I've bought so much equipment that's come with extra licenses or extra hardware
It's pretty rare that I've got less than what I paid for too.

@ChrisS This is the first time I got extras

750 SSLVPN licenses? drool

Normally i get exactly what's on the box

We have...2.

2:13 AM
@NathanC Yah too bad I only need 2

And 7 normal VPN licenses (sonicwall)
So cool story, this modem doesn't even keep a device log...so I can't prove that it's rebooting every night by itself

@NathanC Pretty standard soho gear by the sounds of it
Some of them have a syslog target buried deep within them
Along with the SNMP settings

syslog yeah
i'll mess with it later
gnight

2:31 AM
@MarkHenderson Oh I'll bury something deep within.

@MichaelHampton So the Shellshock bash fix breaks all of my produce servers.

@ewwhite That's awesome.
3

Aren't those things wide open to the he internet anyway?

:(
yes.

@ewwhite Fun times.

2:42 AM
but seriously.

@ewwhite Fix is already out. mco package update at and enjoy.

2:56 AM
@MichaelHampton since when?
what are you talking about?

Bob
3:26 AM
@NathanC Uptime?
That's often displayed somewhere.

Q: Repair windows 7 software RAID

WardSorry that some of this is vague, I wasn't onsite when it happened and am preparing to go in tomorrow and try to fix things. We had a Windows 7 PC that had 2 disks in a software RAID configuration. I don't even know for certain if it was RAID 0 or 1, I'm assuming RAID 1 (mirrored). The two dis...

@Ward You can't install Windows on a Dynamic disk, and a Dynamic Disk is required for RAID
So it probably nuked the disk back to a normal disk
The normal procedure is to install on a normal disk, convert to dynamic, then add a mirror
Wait, sorry, I mis-read

The guys that did this didn't install anything on the dynamic disks, they just stuck them in the new PC - that already had another drive w/ windows on it.

The 2nd PC already had a fresh windows

@MarkHenderson yeah

@ewwhite Since... today.
Didn't you read the ticket you linked? :)

4:28 AM
@MichaelHampton There's no package update available yet

@ewwhite Really? I already got it on all my EL6 systems.

oh, my repo updates nightly.
one sec

Summary of Ensure:

   3.1.10-44.el6_5.2
Mine rsyncs every six hours, same as the public mirrors

I do nightly
seems to need a yum clean all

Interestingly, I haven't gotten an update for EL5, EL7 or Debian/Ubuntu.

4:35 AM
doesn't break on EL5

Well, that explains that.
And... I don't even have at installed on any EL7 boxes...

5:07 AM
@ewwhite I just popped you an email
Dell have fuckin pissed me off by ditching my local account manager and giving me an off-shorer who hasn't even tried to keep my business

@MarkHenderson does it Neeeeeed to be a v3 cpu?

@ewwhite Hrm
I like to buy the latest
But no, it does not need to be
Just as long as it has at least 6 cores and a reasonable clock speed

any core restrictions?

In what way?

my bread-and-butter system is the Intel E5-2643v2
3.5GHz

5:10 AM
pulls out the ARK
That woudl be fine
Nice high clock speed, and 6 cores
Pretty high TDP though
But if I'm only getting one of them, should be fine

and SSDs, hmm
why so much SSD?

Lots of individual databases, so they cache really badly. Maybe 300GB in total data size, and 4 of them for RAID10
300GB of database data, plus the log files that go with them of course

SQL server?

Yep
Now that we have a 2014 Enterprise license, I want something shiny to run it on

I basically don't use disk-form-factor SSDs anymore

5:16 AM
Plus we've outgrown our current SQL server
You use FusionIO don't you?
I assumed that disk-based flash would be cheaper. I don't have a gigantic budget.

One the cheap side, I use OWC Accelsior drives. And on the high end, I use Fusion-io.
the disk-based are more expensive
because of the Vendor lock-in

you'd need to use HP disks.

M-SATA form factor

but no controller lock-in

5:18 AM
The new Dell server I got quoted at 18 1.8" SSD drive bays and 24 2.5" bays

1.8"!?!
geez

That OWC accellerator looks pretty nice
I'd probably be OK with something like that, pending reliability
Do you buy just the card and put your own storage on it? Or do you buy the whole package?
I'm happy for you to quote me on what you think I should have

oh, it's a package... 75% of my produce sites have them
it's just a couple of 6Gbps SSDs per card. SO I RAID the cards

Do you install your OS onto them as well?

but I also have deals on big Fusion-io
No
I use disks
so I'll check tomorrow and see what's what

5:23 AM
Yeah no rush

have a lot of 2TB Fusion-io cards available
also 3TB

What's a typical price on a 2TB card?

@ewwhite You mean the truckload of Fusion-io cards you saved from being shredded?

@MichaelHampton those were 1.2TB cards I had reserved for Logicworks.
but the 2.4TB and 3TB cards are kinda name-your-price.
one step away from being destroyed

@ewwhite I name $5

5:25 AM
@MarkHenderson I'll let you know

Hey, it worked for William Shatner...

Bob
Sloooooow day. I don't want to do anything :(
(and now that I've said that, something's probably gonna blow up)

5:42 AM
Someone close voted @Ward. People must die now.

Q: Skip "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD"

Srikantan RajaI am trying to skip "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD". As per the articles, I have removed bootfix.bin and created the ISO. It worked as expected, but after "Installing files" the server is restarting. During that time, again the server is not continuing from the point it left instead of that...

No one should be awake at this hour.

g'day
woke up by a somewhat frustrated call from one of the big bosses
apparently Spamhaus has blocked our ISP.. which also includes our own mail servers
great start to a day

6:57 AM
Thanks for the answer. But it is for Ubuntu 12.04, there is no such note for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit. Kindly see [Ubuntu certification notes][1]. I will switch to that. Which RAID level is commonly used. How many SAS drives needed? Kindly guide me with steps to configure RAID. [1]: ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201206-11148 — user237817 54 secs ago

7:13 AM
You forgot to guide him with the kindly stepts to configure raid.

7:35 AM
I just love how need to chase people since May to get a log4j config changed so it doesn't fill up disk space and create on-call alerts.
And the same people create tickets for me, but if I don't do them in the same week they'll escalate it up to the CTO.

7:46 AM

morning

@ewwhite vtc.. minimal understanding raid.

@pauska it's not even possible to configure RAID with Ubuntu on that server. So the question stops there.

@ewwhite I know, I was being sarcastic

Ah

8:07 AM
any ansible user? I got a quick question

Dan
9:06 AM
Bid on an auction and I'm already getting buyers remorse - hope I get outbid

a guy on #ansible helped me with my itch

Dan
Hurrah, I got outbid. For the best

9:35 AM
@Dan what didn't you want ?

damn was chat down or just my connection?

@RobM it was down for me too

Dan
@Iain Couple of Thin Clients. They were fine, but I can't really afford it and they were collection only from up north
That said, they went for £155 and asit wasn't clear what spec they were someone either took the time to go and view (It's a proper auction) or took a big gamble

@Dan not ebay then ?

Dan
Nah, PP Auctions. It's the people who are selling off BBC London
That's why I signed up, this was just another auction I noticed
Oh, oops
I just created an ISO containing some NetScaler FW. I've copied it around the place and attached it to a VM - only just realised it's call NSFW.ISO

9:44 AM
MSDN subscriber downloads are stupidly slow these days :-(

Dan
They are - had to pull XP, 7 x86 and 7 x64 a couple of weeks back and it took most of the morning. Thought it'd be a 20 minute jobn

10:21 AM
It used to be :-(

10:52 AM
Today at work someone tried to explain what the cloud is... He said "The central memory of the internet" ... I facepalmed

Dan
@Nick "Explain the cloud" would make a quality interview question, actuallyu
The candidate who answers closest to "The cloud is a marketing buzzword with no substance in reality - at best, it defines a new trend towards centralised, data centre driven applications with a high level of automation. But mostly it's bullshit and just means 'remote' or 'hosted'"

@Dan ... gets the job the second he finishes that sentence :p
o.0 I leave stackexchange for 12 hours and this happens?
Emacs
2
@Dan I prefer the term "Someone elses computer" tho

11:55 AM
@RyanRies @MDMarra What would you call the opposite of a discontiguous namespace? Like, if I have have 2 separate forest, on with root fqdn "domain.tld" another root domain with fqdn "sub.domain.tld"?

"fucked up"
That's what I'd call it.
but we probably can't say that in a whitepaper to the CxOs about why they can't have sharepoint so...

I'm getting bored of leaving comments about cosmic rays anyone want to leave on here serverfault.com/questions/634413/long-apache-wait-times

12:17 PM
I feel horrible. I just programmed in JAVA

@MichelZ Shun! Shun!

12:33 PM
@MichelZ I am making an android app that is currently 1.000 LoC ... how should I feel?

:)
having problems with my classpath :(

I got a new work laptop today.

@cole You get work laptops? Dangit im jealous now

@Nick why? They got me an ultrabook to make it easier for me to be on call 24/7 - so I wouldn't be jealous lol

@cole because we dont get shit... we are just expected to be near a terminal/SSH client 24/7

1:03 PM
@MichelZ which stack? JBoss, WebLogic, .... ?

I would call sub.domain.tld a subdomain to domain.tld, with broken delegation :)

1:21 PM
@dawud java... java.exe :)

Since there's a Windows guy or two in here, before I have to ask on the main... anyone know how to use manage-bde to turn on OS drive encryption with TPM only (transparent operation mode)? OR is this possible? It keeps telling me: ERROR: Specifying the parameter '-StartupKey' is required to BitLocker-protect the OS volume.

manage-bde /status
sorry
I meant to type that into a cmd window

:)

Yeah, that's not how you do it, for sure.

@dawud: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/log4j/BasicConfigurator

@HopelessN00b I dunno off the top of my head, going to see if I can figure it out without wrecking my own bitlocker

1:23 PM
@MichelZ do you have log4j in your classpath? derp :P

@HopelessN00b Maybe better luck with the Bitlocker Powershell module? I bet it's just a wrapper around manage-bde.exe, but the syntax might be easier to figure out

@RyanRies Alright, well I'll ask on main so you can get some upboats if you figure it out. I'm a little worried, since the parameter reference on technet doesn't seem to list a TPM-only/ToM startup option.

@Nick yes, log4j-1.2.8.jar

@RyanRies All Windows 7 machines. The cmdlets seem to only be supported/work on 8, even though I've got PS/WMF 4 installed on all the 7 boxes.

I rarely manage desktops so I haven't had the chance to deploy it en masse
Bummer

1:26 PM
Tell me about it. It's turning into a real pain in the ass.

@HopelessN00b So... do the PCs have TPMs onboard that are recognized by the OS? Because if they don't I would expect for it to ask for an external place to store the key, like a USB stick, but if they do have TPM chips then I don't get it.

@RyanRies Yeah, they have TPMs. Guess I'll double check the BIOS on this guy to make sure it's enabled, but I don't get it either. :(

I guess I would verify that I have no problems enabling it manually first, before trying to automate it

@HopelessN00b is the GPO in place to tell them where to store the key?

@pauska No, I don't want a startupkey... and I'm specifying the recovery key location in the command

1:39 PM
not startup key
you can specify in AD that bitlocker should save the recovery key to AD
(which you really really really should)

@pauska Yeah, I got all that set. Backedup to AD, required to be backedup to AD before encryption can be turned on.

oh, you can't use enable-bitlocker
hmm

Looks like I got a brick to test with anyway ... the TPM config's all jacked up. :/ So that's probably the problem.

@pauska oh yes... definitely!
@HopelessN00b make sure it's enabled & cleared

1:56 PM
Screw it, just gonna use a different machine and drop the brick off with the desktop team.

2:17 PM
@MichaelHampton OK, I'll do that...

Top of the morning to everyone!

morning

Worked with my family for over a year to get my mentally-challenged sister an eTrade account to stuff some of her money in the stock market instead of 1.1% Bank CDs. Finally got it going several months ago. She loves Candy Crush so she insists on buying some KING stock at IPO. I'm glad $1000 sounded like a lot to her, because the stock has tanked since, and I don't expect it to rebound anytime soon.

Heh, I don't even have the cash to put into my HSA much less investing.

2:25 PM
@ChrisS Yeah...blockbuster games tend to run out of steam after a while

Exactly. KING has a P/E of just 3, which would normally scream undervalued. But those big games don't have any staying value, and King hasn't churned out any more blockbusters yet...
Stop spending it all and you'll have extra. =]
(standard smart-mass answer to anyone who says that)

A: Office 365 - what is in the "Sensitive Word List" for spam filtering?

TheCleanerOK, so after going round and round with Microsoft support on this, I was transferred to someone that was at least willing to help. The first 2 techs stated the list was for "internal use only", but the third person explained that while it is true they don't have access to the actual list, they d...

Your morning dose of naughty words... ^^

That's suprisingly short

@JourneymanGeek just examples.

2:28 PM
@TheCleaner FLAG'D OFFENSIVE!

@ChrisS Shhh. I'm chipping away at my credit cards so the interest charges stop eating away at my bank account :(

@ChrisS Hmm. That's kinda depressing. Mentally challenged person's better at saving and investing than I am. And evidently, not much worse than Wall St., either. Go America.

@TheCleaner what did you do, contact SE?

16 hours ago, by Michael Hampton
@TheCleaner OK, the official word from SE is: Post the actual list on an external site, and link to it in your answer with a huge NSFW warning.

@HopelessN00b Well, she doesn't want anything except to watch old TV on Netflix and Subway... So what money she has just piles up.

2:31 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Cock-tease!!

@ChrisS Must be nice. Wish I had less expensive tastes.

@TheCleaner Michael asked about it, someone from SE had some reservations about the question, but otherwise said what he repeated.

2:45 PM
hngg

My personal feeling is that if you actually want to be able to receive mail without spending dozens of hours on the phone with Microsoft solving the mysteries of why they're rejecting mail then Office 365 is probably not for you.

@ChrisS reservations about the question itself?

@TheCleaner Nothing really important.

@TheCleaner Yeah, non-technical staff... typical questions

@MichaelHampton they weren't rejecting the mail. They were letting stuff I thought should be on the list through. But yes, if you want a fully customizable to your own liking spam filter then you should use your own smtp gateway.

2:48 PM
@MichaelHampton To be fair, the same could be said of any hosted solution or major spam filter. Only one I know that "just works" is Postini/Google... and I wouldn't want to manage corporate email through gmail or GooleApps or whatever it is - sucks to administer on a large scale..

@ewwhite And they say Americans don't know geography.

:(

Heh, my filter blocked someone from sending a bunch of .wma files to their personal account...
I should really set SMTP size limits
(it was roughly 80 MB)

@NathanC Ugh. Forget size restrictions, just smack the offender upside the head with your mail server.

@HopelessN00b The best I've ever used personally was Ironmail. Completely customizable yet had daily filtering updates. Multiple detection fronts/algorithms, great logging, and pretty much never went down or hiccuped at all.

2:56 PM
that really is a piece of shit

@TheCleaner The full FOPE list: pastebin.com/cKMQFRwU [NSFW:1]

@Iain Don't worry about it. After enough window-lickers complain, they're sure to remove the option to reject edits. Shouldn't be much longer until that happens.

@Iain What don't you like about it in particular?
