Q: if HP Intelligent Provisioning can install RHEL using non-HP media?

javapoweredHP DL360p Gen8 has built in Intelligent Provisioning OS intallation. Will it work with stock RHEL bought on http://www.redhat.com or I have to buy Linux only from HP directly ? I don't want to buy Linux from HP because they sell it only with support, but I want to buy much cheaper self-support ...

@Basil I just saw an impressive job ad in my inbox today...

@ewwhite oh?

@ewwhite I read that question and head|desk

@MichelZ Nothing new. Resisting the urge to kill my boss. My users. Arbitrary developers. People in general. Etc. 'sup with you? :)
@ewwhite That fool's not question banned? Wonders never cease.

@Basil :)
A good working knowledge of:
o The computing platforms and environments used for PTC (at this time: Red Hat Linux, QNX, Windows). The candidate will be working directly in this computing environment and will be expected to develop processes, scripts, configurations and tools;
A basic understanding of the mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical and electronic systems on a diesel electric locomotive. The candidate should have a sufficient scientific and engineering background to synthesize a good understanding of locomotive control mechanisms from first principles.
that's a heckuva set of skills to have

2:07 PM
Sounds like one of those "two jobs, one paycheck" deals. Never been crazy about those.

@HopelessN00b Same. Resisting the urge to kill customers mainly, some devs, my boss. People as well :)

any PHP geniouses here? :(

Dan
@pauska Far from a genius, but I used to dabble

Working Conditions:
Primarily in indoor, office environment, with significant amount of time working on computers.
· Work environments will be a mixture of offices, laboratory workbench, locomotive shop, outdoors and hotels when travelling.
· Fluid day to day priorities with changing project schedules and deadlines.
· Travel includes outdoor field sites; which will be in varying types of weather conditions.
· Periods of extended hours required at times to respond to urgent situations and project needs.
I wish all jobs listed working conditions...
"In a dark cave, behind the server room..."

@ewwhite Dark cave still sounds vastly preferable to "half height cubicle farm full of annoying interruptions and miscellaneous morons."
Hell, if I could, I'd work in the server room, because at least those are usually access controlled. Keeps out the majority of the twits.

2:17 PM
@pauska DIE PHP, DIE

@ewwhite I know a guy like that- started off as a linux admin, now he's running our PTC project
he and I did shortage duty together last winter

@Basil this is your company, no?

@ewwhite probably not
Our PTC doesn't use QNX
Is it CN Rail?

Oh cool!
yeah, that's me!

2:20 PM
Moderate to extensive travel (up to 40%) will be required including consecutive overnight stays away from home. The position is based in Homewood, IL, but frequent travel to Montreal, QC to see @Basil is expected.

that makes sense
@ewwhite I would probably actually work with whoever that is- we're setting up new storage at that site for PTC
well, all sites
but that site first
right now, they have a shit-tier EMC NS-120

@MichelZ that's german for YES, PHP, YES, right?

and a slightly less shit-tier, but still terrible VNX5300

@Basil heh...
see, this is a sign.. I got this in my email for a reason

you'd love it here
dude, apply and put me as a reference
the pay is phenomenal, and the benefits too

2:24 PM
haha
but I don't know anything about QNX or engineering!

you know linux, that'll get you the job
you know it pretty damned well, from what I've seen

hehe... sometimes.
but interesting

but would CN put @ewwhite up in ultra first class?

No, they'd make me hop a freight train.

no, normally we travel economy

2:31 PM
(since CN owns all the rail lines in my area...)

@ewwhite I hope you like pooping on the tracks
man, is that cold

Our Amtrak trains are always preempted by freight trains.

yeah, chicago is a zoo

@ewwhite I bleed CONRAIL blue, so to hell with Amtrak

most congestion in any city in america

2:33 PM
@RyJones something like that

Air and rail...
we don't do anything right

well, you switch a hell of a lot of freight...
hard to do that without congestion

@MichelZ I shouldn't try to quote Simpsons when I first roll out of bed

@Basil my client that brings produce cross country via rail from Washington to NY is opening a Chicago facility... so I'm starting to learn about these issues.

"oh cool MS provide downloads of SCCM documentation. I wonder if I can print them out to re WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUCK 2900 PAGES?!"

2:35 PM
@ewwhite it's important- every company everywhere that relies on selling something that has a location and mass needs to worry about logistics
The railway is used as a barometer for economists

@ewwhite Coworker moved from NYC to Seattle area, was amazed at how much more Washington apples cost here than there. We figured the volume was the reason

interesting

@tombull89 It is documentation for SCCM after all.. not surprised by the length.

when our volume goes down, the economy will go down the same way next quarter

@pauska yeah, I wasn't expecting quite that much

2:47 PM
So...No one is going to take a shot at that "perfect network infrastructure" question?

@jscott I should start a company called Perfect Networks. the products sell themselves!

It's funny because when the previous IT Director got here, he asked me nearly the same thing.

@jscott link?

-3
Q: Suggestions for creating the Perfect network infrastructure

WillWe are an innovation company and we pride ourselves with disrupting industries and forward thinking. We need help simplifying our network and making it easy. In our mind, our network infrastructure should be like oxygen: you need it to live but you don't have to think about it. Our vision is...

oh wait Imma reading
Right, I just threw up in my mouth a bit.
Project Oxygen? WTF.

2:52 PM

Dan
Haha, jesus I thought the diagram was gonna be spam

I wonder why Amazon is trying to have a perfect network

Our vision is to have everything so simplified and centrally managed that we literally wouldn't need IT staff full-time DO OUR JOB IN MAKING YOU OBSOLETE. PLX. KTHXBAI.

"Pet Care Assistance"? That's a thing?

@jscott they let dogs in the buildings on campus, and they have vets close by in case of issues
as in, there are dozens of dogs of all sizes on every floor of every building. the carpet shows the ill effects of this.

2:54 PM
@RyJones That's cool. I don't think I'd bring my dog to work though.
And certainly not the cats.

Amazon is a dog company, not a cat company :)

ha! I understand.

Is that what SF looks like with ads? Dear gawd.

@MichaelHampton you rather want to pay for SF than having some ads?
SHUT UP AND GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY!!!
2

@MichelZ Getting 200 rep seems like the easier way to go.

3:03 PM
@HopelessN00b yeah I wasn't logged in when I took the screenshot

Dan
Someone here said they wanted a copy of my util to redirect Ctrl Alt Del to a Citrix or RDP session
Think It was @tanner?

Bob
@Dan Wasn't it impossible to catch the SAK?
(I think we had this conversation before, but I forgot the conclusion)
Oh yea, kernel-mode driver.
Ugly stuff.

Dan
@Bob Not really - perfectly supportable Windows Keyboard Filter. They even ship POS devices with them

3:50 PM
So my boss and his boss are butting heads about the next person we hire, and they're not being very good about keeping their disputes private

@Basil use this to your advantage

@RyJones I don't see how I can...
not without risking a lot

@Basil sow seeds of dissent, get your boss fired, get an upgrade!

@RyJones I'm not going to go out of my way to throw him under a bus. Partly because it's dishonest and disloyal, but mostly because he's heading in that direction on his own steam and I'm not going to have much of an effect no matter what I do, politically, and I risk pissing him off if I do stuff like that

4:19 PM
@HopelessN00b aah, I thought I haven't seen that much ads in a long time :)
@Basil hire a girl!

kce
4:43 PM
Hey nerds.

hey girl

kce
@MichelZ HEEEAYYY GURLLL!

sup

kce
Is @ewwhite around today?

@kce he's out shopping for an engineer's hat and a watch

4:48 PM
@MichelZ We have a woman on the team- which was a big surprise to me, when she was hired. My boss is a bit casually sexist...

@RyJones he does not need a watch. he's like chuck norris. @ewwhite does not need a watch, the watch needs @ewwhite
2

kce
@RyJones Huh. Interesting.
I had some career questions - he's got a decent perspective there.

@RyJones they don't make us wear either now- but we do have to have a non-cellphone watch that's within 10 seconds of system time

@Basil I was more thinking of the foamer version of a railroad employee

When I went out last time, I discovered I'm allergic to the metal on the back of whatever watches they sell at Walmart
@RyJones I had to look up "foamer" ;)
learn something every day
and now that I have a word for them, I know three foamers

4:51 PM
@Basil four (foamer here)

@RyJones hah, nice :)
I don't understand why anyone that passionate about trains doesn't go work for the company
they pay so well because it's hard to find people willing to put up with the shit that foamers seems to love
I know a CLO conductor that makes 120k per year at the age of 21

@Basil fallen flags everyone wants to romance about aren't hiring

@RyJones "fallen flags"?

A fallen flag is a North American railroader and railfan term referring to railroad company no longer in existence due to bankruptcy or merger. == Background == The U.S. railroad industry has been consolidating since the 1940s, and almost every year sees the list of operating roads shrink. Most railroad companies that once existed have either closed, been assimilated by a larger company, or participated in a "merger of equals" in which neither company's name survived unaltered (an example of the latter being the Burlington Northern / Santa Fe merger, which produced the Burlington Northern and Santa...

Oh, right

kce
4:55 PM
@RyJones Is it just me is your shirt a different color in your avatar?

@kce different hat, too
The Consolidated Rail Corporation, commonly known as Conrail (reporting mark CR), was the primary Class I railroad in the Northeast U.S. between 1976 and 1999. Conrail is a portmanteau of "consolidated" and "rail" from the name of the company. The U.S. federal government created Conrail to take over the potentially profitable lines of multiple bankrupt carriers, including the Penn Central Transportation Company and Erie Lackawanna Railway. With the benefit of regulatory changes, Conrail began to turn a profit in the 1980s and was turned over to private investors in 1987. The two remaining Class...

@RyJones but but... why?
also, bigger beard?

@MichelZ the old image was almost two years old?

kce
@RyJones OK. so I'm not just crazy.

@RyJones who cares, mine is 50 years old. I'm a grandpa now

4:56 PM
@MichelZ possibly.

@kce actually, you still are

kce
I mean, yes, ostensibly I am crazy, just not for that particular reason.

today, I'm actually wearing the original hat and shirt from the old photo. I'll retake it.

you have to be crazy to work as a sysadmin
5

My avatar is a little old, but still accurate.

4:58 PM
you also have to be crazy to be in this room

kce
@MichelZ CHAT is the only place I feel loved any more.

@Basil I always imagined that you look like white poop

@MichelZ White snowflake on pile of poop, actually

@Basil snowflakes? in your dreams!

@kce I'm here... sweating in the hot-aisle.

5:03 PM
@ewwhite go to the cold one

Surrounded by SUPERSUPERMICRO
and there's a cute punk sysadmin girl two aisles over from me.

@ewwhite I thought you hated on SUPERMICRO?

I'm working on an HP server for my Guantanamo Bay customer.
but there are 15 racks of Supermicro next to me

kce
@ewwhite You have time for a career question?

@kce sure

kce
5:10 PM
@ewwhite You have moved around a lot and haven't done the traditional 5-10 years in one job kind thing... how to explain that to hiring teams when they're like, "oh your a job hopper."?

@ewwhite you are one good looking swine!

kce
@Chopper3 @ewwhite, So hot right now.

@Chopper3 oh, I know

:)

@kce I practice in the mirror
Seriously...
time heals all..

5:11 PM
@kce I thought @ewwhite was always so hot?

I had to figure out how to positively spin being fired multiple times and having 7 jobs in 6 years
be positive... cite the economy and conditions.

speaking of fired - what happened to the guy from Detroit?

he logged in earlier in the week

@BigHomie where are you man

kce

5:12 PM
@kce but you have to have your story straight.

@kce I got the reference

kce
@ewwhite I think have good justifications and I really stand by work. I may have short tenures but I think I have always accomplished a lot.
I'm in an interesting position right now.

You can also head them off...

kce
@ewwhite How so?

"I understand that there may be concern over my short tenures at companies X,Y and Z, however, I can explain each situation and how I've been able to progress..."
or blame it on the economy
change in management/ownership
what are the reasons, anyway?

kce
5:16 PM
@ewwhite Gotcha. Yeah. I'm pretty up front about it.
1) Small shop to a big shop. Needed the increase in challenge after doing help desk.

"personal growth"

kce
2) 2 years in a big shop with shrinking budgets, moved to a more focused datacenter admin position with actual budget

"looking for a greater challenge"
"Change in job role/duties"
"COmpany health"

kce
3) Moved to a private industry to try to get away from the frustrating bureaucracy of government.

"Personal growth... "
"Salary"
"challenge"
"Better opportunity"

kce
5:19 PM
Hmm. You're good at this.

"I quit a suck ass job for a kickass job that turned out to suck ass, so I repeated that loop for a while"
"btw, I suspect your job sucks ass but right now? right now I think it kicks ass, so let's rub bellies together and call it football"

It's been so long since I was fired from certain jobs that people don't even ask

I also don't put anything on my resume I don't want to do again.

kce
@RyJones That's kind of it. It's hard though. I've really own had three interviews where I took the job so I don't have a lot of experience vetting my future workplace.

@kce treat interviews like dating and start dating more.

kce
5:21 PM
I think I've finally now got it down but I feel like I've painted myself into a corner so to speak.

@kce reinforce this with something like... "I'm seeking an environment and organization/team that I can grow with. Stability is important to me, and I think [your organization] is potentially the right fit for my goals"

kce
@ewwhite Yeah.
So here's the thing - I'm considering going back to an old position. My boss restructured the team and put in a pretty large raise.

I find it hard to go back

@kce find a hobby.

sometimes going back should be in the form of "I'll consult for you"

5:25 PM
@ewwhite I came back to where I am after they fixed a specific issue (and Amazon laid my team off)

"I know your environment/processes, can ramp up faster than a new employee..."

kce
@RyJones I got lots of those. In the end I'm OK.
It just will make my move after this job difficult.

@kce Nobody cares, really. If you have the skills, you have the skills

kce
@ewwhite I like the idea of contracting for a year. Particularly since I'm gearing up to head back to the real world.

consulting gets you a lot of experience quickly
and the dynamic is different...
people pay you for your opinion and time... they don't treat you as crappily as an employee

kce
5:29 PM
Ultimately I think I would be much happier as a consultant just because I'd always have new things to work on.
Anyway. @ewwhite @RyJones thanks for the perspective.

@kce hope it works out for you.
@kce understood

@RyJones still pop in every so often, but in school full time and working so it's kinda... busy
Got hired into an Engineering firm doing controls work so that's been pretty awesome

kce
@RyJones Have you SBRed yet?

@BigHomie glad to hear it's working out for you.
@kce No I decided to buy more silencers

kce
@RyJones Sweet. Do you run 300 BLK? I thought that 5.56 did not suppress very well.

5:37 PM
@kce I don't. 5.56 suppresses just fine out of a 20" barrel. Out of a 16" less so.

kce
I thought it was super-sonic so it does one those "TISCH... crack" kind of things?

@kce it does, but the crack is heading away from you so it isn't bad. You should stop by some time and try it.
2

kce
@RyJones I actually get down to Seattle quite a bit. My girlfriend's family is there and mine's in Portland. That'd be fun.

@kce my range is in Idaho, but I can probably from somewhere local to show you how it works

kce
Likewise if you are in Alaska for some reason we can go fishing.
@RyJones Are you in Eastern WA? I thought you were Seattle-area?

5:43 PM
@kce I'm in Seattle. All the explosives and outdoor ranges are in Idaho.

kce
Ah. Gotcha.
@RyJones, @ewwhite Thanks again.

kce
6:06 PM
@ewwhite Are your clients stills struggling to find generalists?

Original Google servers from 1999 at the Smithsonian. 22GB drives and Pentium 2's. http://t.co/Rjca9uZvNG

@kce yes.

what an ugly cabling job...

AIX guy sends me a popup "Hey, are you doing anything on the SAN? Just got a bunch of disconnects"

As I start typing that shit, yes I was, but it was only new zones for windows, he types

"Just shitting you, I rebooted a frame"
4

6:21 PM
@Basil tell him to stick to SMIT

6:42 PM
@Basil Lol that's hilarious

6:59 PM
@ewwhite poor @ewwhite

7:14 PM
Hell is software restrictions and business-critical webshit applications.
2

@HopelessN00b Hell is software-defined meatspace.

7:37 PM
Maybe Sandra is javapowered

@ewwhite I'm beginning to think we're being trolled just like Sandra

@faker Not the original servers.... I know the original storage array was in a case made out of legos. None of them were rack servers IIRC, and it was a mismatch of desktop and workstation computers.
^^ Original Google servers at Stanford - Note the legos behind the monitor 2nd from left.

interesting, I never saw that before

7:53 PM
Nice.
computers used to be cool

I'm somewhat impressed by Google's new hardware. I'm more impressed by blade systems and converged 40GbE though.

@tombull89 what... what is that?

@ChrisS Why 40GbE?

I dunno... sounded like a good idea at the time

I know of trading firms starting to dabble in it

8:03 PM

Bob
@ChrisS Lemme guess... Reddit, Japanese game show? :P

@ewwhite I'd imagine it basically boils down to "faster than 10 GbE, easier than 100 GbE."

Q: Horde not receiving emails

NikSo here is the problem, My DNS in the domain settings gotten reset and now I am not receiving email.s DNS A is set to the right IP CNAME webmail.domain.net pointing to the domain.net MX is not set. Is this is the right approach or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Should have rolled ally. — Basil 35 secs ago

8:18 PM

@Basil I liked using Horde and Imp (well, the whole stack)

@RyJones I prefer Worgen.

My worgen has a bunch of imps.

8:32 PM

I want to poop all over someone's desk right now.

@Wesley you're a cat, it's allowed

@RyJones OKAI!

@ewwhite Based on teh person asking the question, I think it's important to point out that it's a self-support subscription, not a ServerFault-support subscription. Just sayin'. — HopelessN00b 11 secs ago

it's so difficult to contact redhat because they don't have e-mail only phone redhat.com/en/about/contact/sales but I hate using phone. — javapowered 42 mins ago

Q: What is the purpose of ssl logs on linux apache?

dev.e.loperIn /var/log/httpd I see large log files. Specifically: ssl_request_log 620MB ssl_access_log 493MB ssl_error_log 877MB Looking inside of ssl_error_log I see PHP notices and warnings which doesn't make sense to me. Why would PHP warnings be in ssl_error log? Should I keep these file...

As long as we're lambasting noobs.
That's just outrageous.

@Wesley I just came here to say dear $fuckingDeity serverfault.com/questions/633432/…

@Wesley At first I read it as "ssh logs" and I was like "WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?" ... but then realised it said ssl ... and had the same reaction

Close enough.

@Nick Minimal understanding

@Hennes RH7

Oh, I guess I missed that one.
Then again, I do not work in a place which has Linux in production.
All servers are Windoze or FreeBSD

@Hennes has nightmares about such a place

8:44 PM
@Wesley Oddly enough, that nugget of stupid came from a developer.

windows is @ work (and I am not even managging them)
FreeBSD servers is hobby (own and friends)

Q: Virtualization-(Cluster) with KVM/libvirt on top of a FC SAN

ChupaMeI'd like to set up a 2-node HA-Cluster based on Ubuntu and KVM running about 30 VM's. Both nodes are connected to a HP MSA(5TB) via Fibre Channel. Multipathing's already working and the nodes are able to access the shared storage. There are two main requirements: Fail-over of running VM's from...

8:54 PM
Eww.... and why does that have an upvote? That sounds horrible.

@HopelessN00b unleash the downvotes!

Not sure I'd bother with a downvote, but the presence of an upvote is kind of a head-scratcher.

A wild @FalconMomot appears!

lol
I think I accidentally ate some rather hot barbecue yesterday
and then went drinking until 0300
I'm tired.

@FalconMomot I couldn't go so I didn't have that issue

I was car shopping until 1am

I slept all day and just woke up. I am so fresh!
(actually, nope. I woke up at 4AM wondering why my alarm did not go off yet. Despite having a day off work)

@Jacob "That's not an emergency. Call me back when the server catches fire... or if anyone finds the dead hooker I stuffed behind the SAN."

@HopelessN00b It wasn't work
I.... don't want to talk about it....

Someone crucified his pet frog

Oh, well, never mind, then. Probably shouldn't use that line anyway... Generally get questions about the dead hooker that interfere with going back to sleep.

9:10 PM

@FalconMomot yeah no....

@ewwhite His username makes me giggle.

9:25 PM
@Jacob but you have the ultimate vehicle, why would you shop for another?

2 hours later…
