11:00 AM
I don't play enough to justify the cost

@Chopper3 Makes sense to me. I never saw the point in getting upset about games, you're there to relax after all.
I certainly don't let being crap at them get to me, I just try to do better at my own pace

@RobM oh some get SO upset though, hilarious

absolutely.
Some people think whatever game is their whole world
though that can be expensive too. Like @pauska says, if you don't play enough then its a lot of money to take it seriously and get all the mods/DLC for something

depending on the way you want to view it, you might want to consider some players behaving similiar to $sports_fans , or even as a competitor in $sport.
So if you play one game in competition, possibly for money, you might shift that behaviour to other games unintetionally.

that's true
though again, I wonder how upset a premier league footballer allows themselves to get over a game of golf. I should think if you were doing something like that semi-seriously that you'd welcome the chance to relax, let off some steam and be less serious.
Maybe it's like the people we get in meta here sometimes who will spend 10 seconds writing a crap question then 2 hours arguing about it on meta instead of another 2 mins on the main site fixing the question: some people are just dicks ;-)

11:07 AM
@RobM i was gonna answer that lengthy, but meh.

:)

i still think not everyone in the esports leagues playing competitve and swears or flames other is directly a dick
same as not every sysadmin is a dick.

nope, just letting off a bit of steam in the heat of the moment of a game doesn't make someone a dick

@RobM so when (in your opinion) does a gamer becomes a dick if it is not the "usual" uncontrolled emotional behaviour.

When attacks become personal against someone. When the "attacker" goes out looking for people to become offended at. Where they react unreasonably to 'noobs' being in a match that its reasonable/expected for noobs to be in.

11:13 AM
@RobM hmm, that makes my previous me a 3/3, figures :)

In World of Tanks, I've seen people shoot "noobs" on their own team "so that they wouldn't get in the way of the serious gaming later". That's pretty dickish

I've got to do my annual two-day LA trip later this month and I was asking a friend about the hotel and they sent me this AMAZING competition they're running - fourseasons.com/beverlywilshire/services_and_amenities/… - you too can have a day as a prostitute

Jesus christ

@RobM there are a ton of cunts in WoT
just disable the chat completely.. it helps some
I joined reddit's clan, they're ok people.. usually start their own groups

@pauska true enough... wait there's a reddit clan on WOT?

11:16 AM
@RobM yep, RDDT
or well.. RDDT1, RDDT2 etc
I'm in RDDT5
or well, maybe I am.. they keep kicking me out since I'm so inactive

And have you tried the tank rally yet? I find it most odd to race in tanks...

first time I hear about it
probably something they put in to attract more kids with parent visa cards
you know that you can unselect certain battle modes, and still use random battle?

probably... you get given a "Chaffee Sports" tank with a 90kmph top speed. It's worth one go to see what you think, I reckon.
Yeah, I tend to just stick with the 'normal' battle modes myself

add me next time you're on then.. maybe we'll gang up sometime
I think my username is pauska

I'll do that mate, thanks :)
not sure what mine is, probably robertomoir
I tend to go through phases of playing the ass off WOT for a bit then not touching it for months

11:23 AM
@pauska FPA "Wheel of Time" and it was just as true

how windows 8 should have been:

@JennyD what is FPA?

@pauska First Parsed As

@JennyD Okay, I'm blank.. explain with less smart words :)

@pauska I first parsed "WoT" as meaning the book series "Wheel of Time". It is also full of awful people so that parsing worked just as well as the one you intended.

11:26 AM
@JennyD ahh
@RobM same here..

11:44 AM
any puppet users around? Am I right with the assumption that the bash packages gets only updated when the file resource changes here: serverfault.com/questions/632699/…
I almost never use chaining arrows

@faker I use them in modules with the anchor pattern to make sure the package is installed and configured before starting the service. But whatever he's doing seems rather wrong.

@MichaelHampton I'm not a Debian user, but it sounds like he deploys a repo just for bash updates?

@faker Yeah, I have no idea what he's up to there.

12:05 PM
@MichaelHampton I am working on the stats we discussed recently - viz questions asked by people who's homesite isn't SF which ones get closed etc

@Iain yuck, SLES...

@DennisKaarsemaker I can't say I've ever seen it - does yast not do dependency checking and warn you lots of shit will be deleted too ?

@RobM no, CoD is very fast paced, small areas. It's like you're thrown into an envrioment and told to kill each other, while Battlefield is a whole battle with infantry, tank and air battles.
I'm not a huge fan of conquest (the main Battlefield game mode) but it's seriously impressive with 64 players duking it out with tank battles in the streets and jets figting overhead.

@Iain pretty sure it does warn, but there's no cure for stupid users

indeed

12:12 PM
there are not enough faces or palms in the universe to properly facepalm out that one
2

Had time warner over yesterday to figure out why latency skyrockets when people are streaming...installed a brand new Ubee modem. No difference...:(
I played league of legends last night with 450-700ms latency. That was fun.

just pointed my 'assistant' network guy at that bash post and I honestly think he's weeping and laughing at the same time now.

@DennisKaarsemaker Real sysadmins use apt-get purge bash -y

Sup

@RobM I've seen people do this on Debian, Ubuntu,RredHat, Fedora and now SLES. It's not making me facepalm anymore, just
@NathanC won't work. You'ld need --force-essential

12:17 PM
RHEL 7 and current Fedora will not allow you to yum remove bash, full stop

@DennisKaarsemaker Instructions unclear, rm -rf / --no-preserve-root

@DennisKaarsemaker likewise. I'm not sure if I count as any kind of a Linux sysadmin but I remember enough from AIX/SystemV/BSD back in the day to have that on the list of things not to do, without waiting to be told not to do it
But then 4chan frequently get people to microwave or drop their expensive hand-held electronics into tanks of water by claiming that software upgrades make them waterproof or chargeable by microwave oven and idiots fall for it every time, so...

The problem is, these days the junior sysadmin is likely as not to be that guy who prints PDFs and scans them before emailing them.

To a certain degree that's down to the employer - if they want to hire a team full of newbie admins and not pay for any experienced team leaders or mentors then shit like this will happen

@MichaelHampton how else would you do that?

12:24 PM
but i do wonder about the outright lack of ability to think and critically analyse anything they're told that you seem to see in people these days. Just look at Skeptics.SE (actually. don't look, you'll be sorry).

@RobM Oh, that's been on a gradual decline for many years now.

true :-(

worst.dj.ever.

12:50 PM

@DennisKaarsemaker I had forgotten about that webcomic...

@NathanC sorry for reminding you. It's fairly shit these days.

@DennisKaarsemaker Heh, a lot of the webcomics I used to follow are now...

I don't even read webcomics anymore
not even xkcd

I think that QC is the official comic of ServerFault. Or at least it was when it had more yelling bird in it.

1:00 PM
that was just @voretaq7 and @Wesley in their contest to see who's the gayest
2

I still like smbc-comic every now and then. Like the syadmin heaven one: imgur.com/GsFWpk2
2

oh yes
I think Something Positive is still top-notch.
Actually I still enjoy QC - it's just incredibly slow-paced in terms of how fast the plot progresses... and come to that the plot is quite slow in itself too.

1:16 PM
Great I have to transfer about 1.000 files which are about 120GB total... on a machine too weak to compress them easily(or at all) ... and cant use any physical means to transfer them (flash drives) ... I guess im gonna have to use a web server

@faker sysadmin hell is working for my boss and having to repeatedly explain that every problem ever, including the bogs being out of bog paper Is. Not. Down. To. Fucking. "Replication"

@RobM of course not! It's because of DNS. Or caching. Or DNS caching.

Y.... you.... you're him aren't you?
weeps

Heh, had a .doc.doc file caught in the filter

rename to whatsup.doc.doc, forward to user, profess all ignorance of anything the matter.

1:26 PM
nyah!

looks like the Xen vulnerability is out of embargo, patches for CentOS 6 are getting pushed. Details: xenbits.xen.org/xsa/advisory-108.html

nice... :-\

I just read about the guy who removed bash from his system. That's a tiny bit like flaying yourself to prevent skin cancer.

Bob
Hmm. It didn't list dependent packages that would be removed?

1:45 PM
@Bob Probably did...a reflex "enter" is all it takes

morning

@NathanC a reflex enter should default to a a negative response.

@Iain True...then he's just an idiot. :P

s/True...then //

noooooo
the funny dude's meta is gone from yesterday who thought we target him with downvotes
@Nick e-mail them :)

1:53 PM
@Nick Eww, why? At least use a protocol designed for transferring files... not one designed for ... browsing html.

@MichelZ no, it's still there, it's just been so poorly received that it is now hidden in plain sight - look under questions

@HopelessN00b got any better ideas? :p

ftp

@MichelZ email 1.000 files, 120GB total... what could possibly go wrong
@Iain ehhh maybe... if I can easily setup a secure ftp server

@Iain aaah, thx :D

1:55 PM
@HopelessN00b whats wrong with transfering files over http anyway?

@Nick what the heck are you doing? NFS? CIFS? anyone?

@MichelZ transfering files out of old storage server

no NFS/CIFS?

Linux?

@Nick Well, which is easier and more efficient? FTP/SCPing a bunch of files, or transferring them by installing Apache? (Blech.)

1:56 PM
@faker yup

@Nick just rsync them over ssh with a weak cipher and no compression?

@MichelZ nope
@faker possibly
Hmm how well will a <2Ghz CPU combine 120GB of files into tar? :p

@Nick rsync --progress -av source --rsh="ssh -c arcfour" destination

@Nick Depends on how many files.

@Nick I think it will be rather a I/O problem than CPU problem...

1:58 PM
@NathanC ehhh... a lot
ill possibly use rsync
Anyone knows if theres a way to get a list of checksums from a directory (for example sha512sum ` find . ` ) and then auto compare the output to another dir? (integrity checking)
Ill possibly have to write my own script for that

Why do always american companies "thanks for your patience"? I have no patience when something stops working...

@pauska heh "Thanks for not being patient"

@pauska Because our nation has become a nation of political correctness. You can't tell someone their a fat fucking moron that needs to put the god damn cake down.

2:14 PM
some are. They're lusers aren't they?

Bob
@MichaelHampton In response to the headline: You don't say?

Printing...

@MichaelHampton and in retort: geektime.com/2014/07/21/…

@MichelZ I'll give it a look again. Last time it was buggy for me, freezing constantly.

@ChrisS it had issues, especially after the 8.1 / spring updates
but they are solved

2:20 PM
@MichaelHampton Yes. Yes they are.

@ChrisS I'm not!
Of course you have to shut it down first
before you wavecharge it!
simple as that

mhmm I didn't update mine yet to iOS 8. Will it work with iOS 7 too?

@MichelZ Just finished installing and configuring the basic settings. Immediately froze when I open the Tasks/Recent Items for a program. Maybe it's just my computer... I should try it on a fresh install

@DennisKaarsemaker scary thing is - people have tried it

@faker now, it's a new firmware feature

Dan
2:23 PM
Got a proper code signing cert :D
I feel so professional

@ChrisS interesting. I'm using it on a number of devices and have minimal problems

Bob
@MichelZ How about Start8?

GPO integration looks nice... extensive

@cole $boss is getting a 6+ next week

2:25 PM
Oh Java... from Hell's heart I stab at thee....

I just stuck this to his monitor

@Bob dunno, never used it. I was satisfied with classicshell

Bob
@MichelZ I've installed it on a couple machines for family, and it works flawlessly. I just cope with the start screen, myself (keyboard-only, it's usable)

@DennisKaarsemaker LOL

@DennisKaarsemaker Parents-in-law are thinking about getting a pair of 6. FIL is particularly not happy with his LG G2 (which I told him not to get because he wouldn't like it - now it's going to be the same story again with the iPhones... some people don't learn)

Bob
2:26 PM
The program isn't free, though, if that's an issue.

$5 isn't an issue...

Bob
Then I guess there's the option of skipping 8 and moving to 9 10

We're currently planning on skipping 8 if 10 runs well and is out by next fall.

@ChrisS as long as you're on 7 on not anything older... why not
8 has minimal advantages for businesses
I guess

@MichelZ 8 is faster, really noticeably faster
Start8 freezes just like ClassicStart, though not at long.

2:38 PM
I like 8 with a start menu replacement for home use, but we're going to target 10 for our next upgrade at work

Beginning to think it might be my comptuer

Bob
@ChrisS ...probably
If two separate implementations fail? Yea.
@ChrisS Faster in what way?

2:54 PM
@Bob Boot times, accessing network shares, lots of little things

it's a lot of small things, yes
i like the copying dialog
and the ISO mounting
those alone got me sold :)

@Chopper3 This is the party you vote for?

@ChrisS FUCK no

Dan
@Chopper3 Oh how glad am I you answered like that

@ChrisS That'd almost be like voting Republican in the US

2:56 PM
What party is this? Sorry, not familiar with your politics that much

Dan
@ChrisS The cunt party.

@Chopper3 I do vote Republican sometimes.

@Dan I'm almost as left as you get

Bob
@ChrisS Oh, yea, SMB 3 is nice.
But I never reboot anyway :P

@ChrisS The Conservative Party - the party on the side of business interests and little else, though not as racist as the UKIP party that says they don't want any immigration but seems to be full of massive racists

2:58 PM
@Chopper3 Wow, they actually call themselves the Conservative Party? At least in the US they cover their intentions with optimistic euphemisms.
I thought the UK exported all their racists to the colonies years ago?

@ChrisS yep, we have quite a few, traditionally the Liberal Party were the biggest over the past couple of hundred years, then in the early 20's century the rise of socialism brought with it the Labour Party and an old party that really came out of the whole house of lords thing called the Whigs became the Conservative Party but we also have these UKIP racists, the Greens, Communist and a few other minor players too

Bob
@ChrisS See: Pauline Hanson -_-

Dan
@ChrisS Sadly the UK as a whole is hugely racist and xenophobic. Most of it is fairly "casual" and falls into the "Some of my best friends are [whatever], but I hate how they..." territoriy, but we sure have some deep rooted issues

Bob
@Chopper3 Huh, yours is actually called the "Labour Party"?

@ChrisS compared to most countries we're overall pretty openminded about race/sex/sexuality etc. but as anywhere there are pockets of intolerance, generally related to age - the older and richer you are the less accepting of others it seems

3:02 PM
are we having a party now?

@MichelZ No, learning time.

@Dan I wouldn't say it was hugely - not compared to very many places around the world, certainly the less educated or poorer you are the worse it gets seemingly
@Bob yep, they have party with the same name in Australia too if I recall

Bob
@Chopper3 No, named "Labor Party" here. Despite us using the "labour" spelling everywhere else :S

But our right ring isn't anywhere near as far right as the Republicans and our 'left' is more centre these days
@Bob ah yes, of course, sorry

Bob
I never looked up why, actually.

3:04 PM
@Bob it's one of those english/rest-of-world spelling things, most of them I don't care about

I'm sure it's 'Murica f-cking with your government at some point in the past

Bob
Hm. Changed in 1912. Influenced by Americans. Figures.
@Chopper3 I honestly have nfi where Au parties stand now. It's just one big "TERRORISM!!!" clusterfuck right now.

@ChrisS about 20 years before the whole boston-tea party business and way before the WoI there was a conscious move by those born in the US to change their spellings, pronounciations and even manners (i.e. fork/knife arrangements etc.) from the british way just to spite them - hence honour/honor, labor/labour etc.
@Bob from a distance it seems a bit misogynistic but that could be the media coverage

@Chopper3 Meriam and Webster liked Latin and used the Latin variations (-or) when writing their dictionary. Johnson's dictionary was more heavily influenced by the popular spellings with French influences (-our). Each dictionary became popular in its native country (for any number of reasons) and the rest is history.

@ChrisS good info!

3:13 PM
Also: Never attribute to malice what can equally be attributed to stupidity or dumb luck.

@ChrisS anyway the main thrust of that video up there is that that bastard wants to tear apart our 'Nation Health' service which has been in place since WW2 and sell it off to his mates.

@Chopper3 Not that your system is perfect by a long shot, but it's much much much better than the US system

@ChrisS agree - you NEED a third party and to cut campaign budgets

Bob
@Chopper3 Who needs affordable healthcare? If you can't afford it, you should just go die! (/s)

It seems silly that people accept that Police and Fire protection can/should be socialized, but basic health care shouldn't be....

3:17 PM
@ChrisS true - though the recent militarisation of the police in the US worries me

@ChrisS very few people make money off police and fire protection. health is a huge business

@Chopper3 1. Green party - whom I frequently vote for just to spite the entrenched incumbents 2. SCotUS just ruled that "money = speech" and "bill of rights applies to companies", thus allowing companies to spend unlimited funds on campaigns. I'm hopeful this pushes the US over the threshold of realizing there's a problem with our system and it needs to be changed.

@ChrisS but the rep&dems account for what sort of percentage of vote in the US?

@Chopper3 Militarization of basic police forces scares the crap out of me.
Giving that guy basaltic armor and a fully automatic weapon.....

@ChrisS yeah, kinda funny kinda scary - especially if you aren't white in the middle states

3:19 PM
@Chopper3 90 to 99% in an average election. 3rd parties rarely cross the 10% marker

@ChrisS do you think a serious 3rd party would help to keep things more honest?

I do think specialized forces should have military gear available however. This has vaguely been the case since SWAT teams first arrived.
@Chopper3 No, our system is setup so only 2 parties will ever be in control. If a 3rd party ever gets popular it will be to the extreme detriment of a primary party - to the point where they swap places and the balance resumes with 90+% of votes going to 2 parties.
We would need to change the way our system works to get a serious 3rd (or more) party.

@ChrisS we have the same thing (ARV - Armed Response Vehicles) - you have SWAT (weirdly I have a full set of the LA SWAT battledress for airsoft - odd I know)

This could easily be done with 3 changes:
1. Transfer Voting - just like we do for Stack Exchange moderator elections, you pick your favorites in order of preference.
2. Mixed-Member Proportional - For multiple representative bodies, like Congress. This is slightly more complicated as the primary wouldn't determine who is on the ballot, but rather the representatives from each party. In the main election you vote for a party, representatives are select from the party according to the primary.
3. Shortest Straight-line Division - Mathematical way to prevent gerrymandering, which is basically
I'm not worried about militarizing people who are specially trained in high-tension response situations. The problem is when Joe Sixpack, as a beat cop, gets all that equipment. And police departments are doing this because the equipment is free and they aren't forced to cooperate with neighboring police or with county sheriffs, or with state troopers. Everyone can just do their own little thing if they want, with minimal oversight (usually just the city's mayor or city manager)
@Chopper3 I think I've seen LA SWAT gear at the local paintball shop too. IIRC it's the only "police" garb they carry. They have a few military inspired pieces.

3:34 PM
@ChrisS I'm sad I know :)

airsoft... wuss

Moving around furniture in my office: moves them where I though would look better "Nah, lets put them back where they were"

Using Windows Movie Maker...my poor brain.

3:51 PM
@NathanC What?! People use that thing?

That software actually works and does something?

It's doing something...taking its time loading the videos before letting me do anything with them
all i'm doing is splicing two videos in together, so I didn't want to download something else lol

Windows 10 download is live - preview.windows.com

yep
finished in 1 minute, 10 seconds
25 MB/s
nice
:D

yeah, I've got 2MB/s service

4:00 PM
@ChrisS ive got 300KB/s :( ... and im not going to download windows :p

Bob
@ChrisS I'll have to wait for next week :\

@Bob torrent should be live in <1 hour

Bob
@ChrisS I mean I don't have time to test it out :P

aaaand
installing

Ah - I mucked up my home laptop last week so I waited for Win10 before fixing it...

Bob
4:05 PM
@ChrisS I don't have any spare hardware, so it'll have to go in a VM.
Don't want to dual-boot until it's more stable (consumer preview?)

there's enterprise edition as well
nice

Fuck AWS
2

Dan
Anyone got a Windows 7 VM on ESXi with VMware tools that could look at something for me?

@Dan Maybe, let me check if it's still running....

4:19 PM
~3.5MB/s at my house...heh
I'm teamviewered in so I can download it there :p

@Dan possibly

@Dan Does arch matter?

Dan
@jscott NO

@Dan Ok, I've got one.

Dan
(Sorry for caps, delay as I'm RDPing to this box)
Launch command prompt and run

4:22 PM
Oh boy, is this going to delete system32? :)

Dan
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
then
devmgmt.msc (Has to be from the console)
In device manager, View -> Show Hidden Devices

Gotcha, done this before... One moment.

Dan
Then expand the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" node
Do you have Broadcom NetXtreme drivers in there?

@Dan I do not have that.

Dan
So why do these :(

4:24 PM
Bad sysprep?
Forced driver install?
Just guessing.

Dan
The odd thing is they have two images - one is an old hand built one from old, that has them. One is a nrew 64 bit SCCM delivered job done by external contractors with the same thing

damn esx

kce
Good morning jerkwads.

I have a template that does not want to be cloned :(

:(

4:26 PM
@kce heya freak
"Error caused by file /vmfs/....."

kce
@MichelZ Temperamental templates huh?

@kce yep.. :(

@Dan fwiw, I checked another W7 VM, it does not have the Broadcom listed. Both are VMware tools 9354.

why should it have a broadcom nic?
vmware uses intel or vmware

use VMware vmxnet3

4:30 PM
@MichelZ It shouldn't... That's what he's chasing down.

kce
So what I'm hearing here is Broadcomm has once again fucked stuff.

vmware tools install successfully on win10
;L)

@DennisKaarsemaker It's obvious that @Wesley is a better gay man than me.

@voretaq7 Do you know what a Penalty Box is?

wohoo
3 important updates - win10

4:42 PM
@ewwhite The hot aisle behind a rack of bladecenters.

in aviation

(or did you mean in a non-IT context?)

I got stuck in the penalty box at ORD last night following a long flight

@ewwhite a quiet corner of the ramp where they send you when you miss your departure slot :)
(or miss your arrival slot, or show up early)

or arrival
in our case, thanks to the Aurora fire/suicide/WTFBBQ, We had to sit 30 minutes.

4:44 PM
also a remote corner of the ramp where they (try to) send planes that may have a "security problem", but I think there's a more official term for that.
@ewwhite "Yeah, some nutjob burned down ATC. I always knew those controllers would go Milton on us one day!"

There was a Delta plane sitting in one of those spots when I saw it on the way home (I live next to the airport) ...always wondered why lol

@NathanC Because DELTA.
Now SUFFER.

heh
So I went to Facebook... and was amused that there was a Check-in for "O'Hare Penalty Box"

@voretaq7 Got a better choice?

nothing spectacular in that preview... :(

4:55 PM
@Jacob Than Delta?
