There's still no way (for us non-modmins) to private message another SF'er is there?

No
Blah. I clearly need more coffee.
or... learn to google
@jscott: the closest thing to PMs are superpings and mod messages. Some users tend to just post an off topic comment as a workaround

@JourneymanGeek Thanks. I figured as much.

And that's probably by design

1:48 AM
@MichaelHampton Apathy

1:59 AM
@MarkHenderson Ah, well, at least they'll be well situated to protect Australia's people from the drop bears.

2:22 AM
@MarkHenderson Now that's some funny sh*t

@MichaelHampton I've never even heard of the EFA outside of a few times you've mentioned them
They're certainly not particularly active or well known
@ChrisS I had all that sort of shit between 7:30 and 9:30 and from 9:30 till 11:30 I was in a meeting with a government department that almost caused me to lose the will to live. Then at 11:30 till 12:00 one of the web servers caught fire and my haproxy rules weren't strict enough to take it out of the pool
So all in all it's been a pretty shit day

Yep, at least it isn't Monday?

@ChrisS Tuesday

=]

And I just overheard my co-worker: "Shit, this has never fucking worked"

2:57 AM
oh fuck Domino right in the ass

@MichaelHampton What you know about this?

Q: How to make Samba share to NOT ASK FOR PASSWORD

hijarianNOTE: I have read probably up to 50 different pages describing how to setup public Samba share in the span of 2 YEARS and nothing ever worked for me. I don't know how much RTFM I need to set this stuff. I need/want to setup a completely open public file share on my home server for two workstatio...

I have a bunch of synergy premium promo codes from when I bought it. If anyone wants a promo code, let me know

@JourneymanGeek synergy?

yeah, the keyboard/mouse sharing program, they switched to a semi commercial model

4:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ah I remember it now
Whats your promo code get you?

oh, a full lifetime licence
So basically binaries and source code.
Which is quite funny since I paid 5 dollars and wasn't entirely enthusiastic about the whole thing

4:22 AM
good morning
is it already monday again?

5:06 AM
@MichelZ I wish. This coming Monday is a public holiday

@MarkHenderson basterd

Fuck fuck fuck fuck

sup?

I just got an email from our DC that we sublease off. We have 2 months to move out because they are selling their premises and not taking us to their new location
I HATE TODAY

hehehe
that's - shit
no colo around the corner?

5:12 AM
They've already exchanged contracts
@MichelZ Negative
But thankfully I have leads from a few abandoned DC searches I did a while back

and who negotiated such a shitty contract?
2 months notice?!

@MichelZ The current DC has exchanged contracts with their buyer
Which means that the sale is taking place and they will be moving out in 2 months time to comply with the sales contract
We sublease off a private company, not a commercial DC

yes, but they still have to honor the current contracts

Which will be changing

so no contract?

5:13 AM
@MichelZ There is no contract, that shit expired years ago

between you and them?
damn
shame on you!
let that be a lesson for the future

@MichelZ I had no hand in that; it was organised before I was permitted anywhere near a console

always get the lawyers involved :)

its a weird situation
We contracted all of this shit out to another guy years and years ago
And he organised this arrangement and it worked really really well for a long time

how many servers to move?

5:14 AM
Then the contractor started going whacko (literally he had a mental breakdown)
So we had to fire him, but when we fired him we bought everything in the DC
All the equipment is long gone and replaced, but we kept the status quo at the DC because we had no real reason to change
@MichelZ Thankfully not many. Around half a rack I think.
The downtime to move them will be a hard sell to our clients

ah, that's not so bad then
ok, gotta go now. rip out some hardware from the DC as well :)
l8tr punks

@MichelZ No, physically it's not too bad. Only like a /27 to re-IP as well
Cya

5:50 AM

G'day

6:18 AM
@Iain G'night

@Wesley I thought you'd gone already

@Iain Just closed the lid on my other laptop after scrambling hard on a SBS 2011 / SSL / Exchange problem.
It ain't easy moonlighting.
nudges @ewwhite
I feel awful. 16 hours a day isn't fit for man nor beast.
But, the more I talk, the less I sleep, so I flee.

g'morning gentlefolk

morning

hey

8:02 AM
just another of these days you hope will be over soon, and they just started..

morning

8:17 AM
oh fun! Consolidating 2 Hadoop MapReduce clusters. The jobs from the team moving into our cluster runs between 2 and 4 minutes but they run hundreds of them
that's not how you use Hadoop. Not at all.

8:27 AM
morning

Dan
Had to speak to Nominet to get my domain formally registered to my company, so that I can get an SSL cert and they're taking their blooming time over it

IP Block 192.168.1.x is full... now which one is next

8:54 AM
@Nick you filled a /8????
ah, .x... ok :D

@MichelZ im debating if I want to drop 192.168 and go for 10.x.x.x

you could just change the netmask...
we have CIDR nowadays
or use IPv6 ;)

meh too bored to do more setup...
also our ISP doesn't support IPv6 so it would be a pain having ipv6 intra and ipv4 only connection
And honestly not too keen on setting up ipv6 till there is full support

@MichelZ that would be /16 though :P

@faker true.
@Nick what do you mean with full support?
use the freaking IPv6 NOW!

9:05 AM
I have native IPv6 at home :D

@faker sixxs only :(

@MichelZ but...but... more setup work

@Nick but but... NO MORE IPv4!

@MichelZ but my ISP doesnt even know what ipv6 is yet so im stuck with a v4 address for outgoing traffic

shame on you sysadmins!
@Nick have you nagged them on when IPv6 will be available?
it is a business provider, isn't it?

9:07 AM
I have ... first 2 calls ended with the tech having no idea what the fuck I was talking about,
at the third call I was able to get someone that knows how a computer works... and told me they have no plans at the moment

@Nick lol... what provider is this?

@MichelZ this is the only quality provider in the area ... mostly serves residential but also snall companys

:(

visted a random forum "Authentication required - human check, user: admin pass: 12345"
this is what they use for captcha? SERIOUSLY?
And its not a form its a apache .htaccess auth

9:11 AM
@Nick actually, quite smart :)

@Nick "Doesn't know what IPv6 is" does not match "quality provider"

@JennyD in this hole of a country... there are no quality providers

@JennyD: Mine knows what ipv6, kinda
and arn't really a quality provider
and the best provider here dosen't do ipv6 :/

The best answer I was able to get from them was "soon"
And that was at the 3rd call for this

9:13 AM
"does my new fibre optic connection have ipv6?" "No, it dosen't, we resell, and nucleus connect dosen't support it"
After I had it installed, I had ipv6 set up 10 minutes later

@JourneymanGeek I guess you are talking about "residential". Sure your business provider has IPv6?

@MichelZ: oh, our old one does, but tunneled

It's usually like that here. Residential: no ipv6, business: yes
or: smaller provider: yes (differentiator), bigger: no

its the other way around here

Q: I'm being targeted for downvotes by nasty users

EamorrSo I had a small argument with a couple of users on one question of mine. Now I'm finding that my recent questions (perfectly valid - I took great care not to upset anyone because I was banned for a while) being downvoted for no apparent reason. Why should I be banned from being able to ask que...

9:17 AM
the smaller provider does cgn, and cheapish static ipv4 ips

Now that cloudflares supports free SSL... time to start tha migration of my website

@Dan just checked his questions, i would ban him for life..

@DennisNolte Seconded

@JennyD he did not even read the tour..

I'm hungry ... the fridge is empty... i'll just stick to coffee for today

9:22 AM
qouting: I don't know what time is is where you are, but it must be very late. Thanks to everyone for the productive answers.

lovely..
What is "layer 3" please? Don't need 10 Gig, nor do I need PoE.
ye fuck that, a problem just solved itself by doing nothing.. great, hours of work for the bin.. if we could get people to actually tell us if they do stuff like power cuts..
that guy..

No, people just asking off-topic, non-useful questions actually damage the site's reputation. There are rules here, and they get enforced, that's all — MichelZ 2 mins ago
truth

Dan had the better phrase:
Your questions are off-topic, lazy and dull.

@Nick but only for browsers with HTTPS SNI :/

9:38 AM
@faker on the free tier, yes. paid = all browsers
and what freaking browser does not support SNI
they should get nuked anyways

@MichelZ a lot of old feature phones f.e.

@MichelZ 20% of the internet..

and curl/lynx i think too, but i did not check lately

@DennisNolte and they browse the web?

@MichelZ some specific pages yes.

9:39 AM
@MichelZ nope, Pro plan doesn't afaik, only Business plan

we had that issue with a customer a few days ago
his page was behind SNI and the featurephone browsers were unable to accept it because of a cert error.

even in Germany 10% don't support it. That's fine for my private site. For a webshop I'm running, not so much...

pro supports "all browsers"
@faker i guess you can afford 20$/month for your webshop
if not - CLOSE IT

@MichelZ i would love to actually see anything support all browsers, i bet there are browsers out there who cannot show text.

9:41 AM
@DennisNolte lol...

@MichelZ interesting, thanks

@DennisNolte Well, screen readers don't actually show the text...

@MichelZ well, I was under the impression it would be $200/month which the owners don't want to spend :D

@faker yes, that would be excessive depending on the size/importance of your site. but 20$? who cares..

Would it be too bad if I try to archive a directory that a program is currently modifying? :p

9:57 AM
@Nick try and find out

10:12 AM
@Nick --ignore-fail :)

@MathiasR.Jessen there's cake today. Don't miss it!
shite.
oh well, that password was due for replacement...

:)

are deleted messages visible to moderators
in other words, how quickly do I need to change it? :)

@DennisKaarsemaker mods and room owners can see it

10:27 AM
not too bad then
all public things I use this for have 2fa anyway
hmm, how do I change the passphrase for a luks-encrypted disk...

lol
can servers have other emotions, too?
3

@MichelZ Kernel cheer: System nominal

Kernel status: sad, running on supermicro :(

@MichelZ at least its not dell

10:38 AM
rebooting to check new luks passphrase...

@Nick I'll happily take all your DELL equipment, and you get my Supermicro gear
@DennisKaarsemaker why would you paste your password to the interwebs?

@DennisKaarsemaker what was that password for? :p

@Nick unfortunately the only password I reuse quite a bit, for logging into all my personal machines
but all have a new password now :)
and no, it's not hunter2 :)

SSH-keys FTW....

@JennyD those don't work in the gdm login screen :)

Bob
10:45 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker hunter3?

@Bob damn you! Changing again....

@DennisKaarsemaker hunter$?

I've been watching the show Pretty Little Liars. In yesterday's ep, one of the people was talking about his password, which was actually quite good - letters from cities he'd lived in, alternating caps, numbers thrown in...
Later in the ep, one of the girls reacted "Wow, his password is almost as good as mine!"

@JennyD thanks for the poke though. It's also the password for my ssh keys. Time to cycle those as well!

Nice to see a show that actually getsx some stuff right

10:47 AM
@JennyD and then written it down on a post-it under the keyboard?

@MichelZ I actually have a post-it with my password under the keyboard

@JennyD nice :)

@MichelZ also: nope, he recited it to his girlfriend who needed it

@DennisKaarsemaker CorrectHorseBatteryStarple?

@JennyD which is kinda wrong

10:50 AM
@MichelZ Not in this context.
which it would take too long to explain

i believe you

@Nick I did use a similar strategy, but CHBS is the new hunter2 :)

I don't know most of my passwords, they are generated by keepass and I never see them.

@Iain likewise. But that also doesn't work for the GDM login screen :)

:(

11:04 AM
@JennyD I would completely do this with a fake password

our security TL has a postit with the content
---Passw0rd1---
---pa$$word---
hunter2
oh, and fuck you markdown...

is there something like honeypot passwords? Like putting a password under your keyboard and when it's used automatically send an intrusion alert?
that would be cool

@faker shouldn't be too hard to whip that up as a pam module

im so far down a directory that it takes 2 lines of my screen to show it -.-

ooh, I can hook that up to the snmp traffic light on my desk...

11:13 AM
@faker I've seen something like that in a movie.
Sends someone an alert (movie style) when someone logs into his system

@DennisKaarsemaker your what?

you can send it snmp traps/sets to activate the lamps

11:28 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker nice thing!

@Nick Pizza

@MichelZ and pizza :p

@DennisKaarsemaker if you want the upgraded version with glow effects, optional sound, and transfer of data via bluetooth, contact me :) we did sell something similiar a few years ago. Not configured via snmp though.

11:39 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker What's it cost?

@jscott no idea. network engineering bought it and discarded it after a while because it's useless :)

I was interested if only because it has potential to be annoying to coworkers. Maybe with the light/buzzing they would glance over at the monitoring screens instead of chatting me "is something wrong with the network?"

@jscott lol

11:59 AM
@DennisKaarsemaker At the previous job they had insane password reqs for the Windows network - change monthly, no reusing the last 12 ones... so I came up with a scheme to help me remember. I put up a sketch of our stable, and I'd chose the password based on what horse was in a particular stall at one time. So at some point my key would be "third left, two horses ago"...

@JennyD I can never remember most horses names

@Iain There are only about 18-20 horses at our place, and I used to help taking them out to the field in the mornings and bringing them back in and feeding them in the evenings. I haven't done that in a couple of years though so now I don't know all the names of the current horses anymore...

@JennyD I was on vacation the week before last. We went riding on a beach from a yard that had 130 horses

@Iain That's a lot...

@ewwhite Absolutely nothing

12:08 PM
@JennyD The house we rented for the week was on a farm where the owner's passion was breeding Section D Welsh Cobs
@JennyD yes and they used them all, especially during the summer school holidays

@Iain We've got a Welsh Cob crossbreed with something else at our place now, a very nice horse.

@JennyD She has once bred the top Welsh Cob in the country
and they're big as well, close to 16HH

I should measure my horse again, been at least a year since and he should be near his full height by now

What do you think he is ?

Around 160 cm I should think.
Possibly a little more...

12:21 PM
16HH then

I tend to see him as a small horse still, but everybody else says he's a fairly big one.

what is "HH"? is it like "U" for horses?

@MichelZ yes

cool

It means Hands High where 1 Hand is 4"/10cm

12:23 PM
omg
what's wrong with just using "cm"... :)
standardize the world!

@MichelZ they didn't have cm when hands came into use

@MichelZ he's english. He will never submit to the metric system :)

We had a lovely lesson yesterday, we're really getting somewhere now. He needs a lot of help to learn to carry himself well, he prefers to amble along with everything sticking out at odd angles... but with a little help he'll collect himself beautifully and he has the loveliest smooth trot once he sets his mind to it

@DennisKaarsemaker :)

like I don't even need to work to rise properly, he just lifts me along with him

12:24 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker I use appropriate terminology where applicable
There are other conventions used around horses that are ancient too - You always get on from the left side (looking forward) as most people are right handed and so had their sword on their left hip

though it's good to practice getting on from the other side occasionally, both for the person and the horse
also, the sword being on the left side is the reason that where you have the horse on a lead the horse should walk on the person's right side

I've only ever once got on from the right
and I got told off for doing so

12:43 PM
...and CryptoWalled again, again. The ineptitude of AV lately is really becoming irritating.

@HopelessN00b Time to ban all attachments other than JPGs and word docs? heh

@NathanC Software Restriction Policies, actually. Though, for how often we keep getting hit by this same thing, it's making me increasingly bitter over having to suffer the use of AV and web/email filtering.

Derp

Hmmm, I'm working with an Exchange installation... can I just use a cumulative update to install versus the install DVD?

12:50 PM
@ewwhite Um, what?

@ewwhite yes

so does that mean 4GB Exchange RTM download + 1.6GB CU6
or just the 1.6GB CU6 download?

@ewwhite no, just the CU. They are full installers

@MichelZ It's sooooo small!

12:52 PM
@ewwhite yes, probably only 1 language or something like this

@ewwhite That's what she said.

or they left out the 3.4 GB hidden porn file

@HopelessN00b 2010 has the same "feature"

@MichelZ Never used it. Is it in quotations for being of dubious quality or utility?

12:57 PM
@HopelessN00b nah, just because i don't know if I should name it "feature" or something else
it's definitely useful
you don't have to install base + sp + cu
just install latest cu on new machines

Well, good to know. If I ever have to <shudder> install an Exchange environment, I'll just use the CU.

I do setup lab environment on occasion
saves some time

I oppose Exchange on principle. Having it an environment just leads to email, which inevitably leads to stupid user tricks around around email.

@HopelessN00b that's not exchange's fault though. And what's the alternative? notes? :D

@MichelZ text files on an AD group share!

1:05 PM
@DennisNolte I like that
@HopelessN00b Also, E-Mail avoids them calling you :)

@MichelZ Meh. I never answer my desk phone, and I left my cell at home. They can call me all they want. :)

@HopelessN00b then just don't read your e-mails and help desk tickets as well. problem solved.

wtf.. (trying to figure out why some daily data did not get imported into the db)
day1 manual import works, executing the script does not, the script runs for the same stuff on ~1k other devices daily without issues.
ye great, exactly that what i need right now..

@MichelZ I wish I knew that.

@MichelZ i tend to disagree, if you do not respond within 5min they will call anyway..

1:07 PM
it wasn't really clear from the docs.

@MichelZ Nah, then my boss comes over and starts merping.... and there's not enough room to hide/sleep under my desk these days. :(

@HopelessN00b room for improvement then :)
@ewwhite yes, it's helpful to know that before you begin the install

Q: Confusion regarding Microsoft Exchange 2013 RTM .ISO and Cumulative Updates

ewwhiteWhat is the best practice regarding deployments of Microsoft Exchange 2013 and the various Cumulative Updates available for the platform? I've once made the mistake of downloading the Exchange installation .ISO from Microsoft and running normal Windows updates in the past. I had no knowledge of ...

I wish my Microsoft guy would call me back.
Yes, you @MDMarra

Hmm. That guy should really clone himself... or find an acolyte, or something. Must ensure the lettuce related-emails reach their destinations smoothly.

1:28 PM
@ewwhite tried to answer that for you
1
A: Confusion regarding Microsoft Exchange 2013 RTM .ISO and Cumulative Updates

MichelZI don't know if it is "well-known". I agree that the documentation of this feature is poor. Here is some Microsoft Documentation: Updates for Exchange 2013 Exchange 2013 cumulative updates and service packs include all the changes from previous updates and are full builds of the product. ...

Re the last: No.
A full copy of a DVD with 2GB on it should yield an iso/image of 2GB.
Not the max space useable on the DVD.
As for the rest: Interesting. I did not know that either

I found out the difference in size
the .exe is compressed
it's 2.8 GB once you uncompressed it
it is missing some Unified Messaging language packs (450 MB) as well as a "Search" folder with strange data in it

@DennisKaarsemaker Hmm...
[root@Military ~]# hpilo_cli -P local localhost update_rib_firmware version=latest

@MichelZ Thank you. That makes more sense.

@ewwhite intriguing
I've only seen that when uploading ilo3 images to ilo4

ILO logs: Firmware upgrade via XML failed.

1:39 PM
@ewwhite ilo3 < 1.28? :)

HP Lights-Out Online Configuration utility
Version 4.4.0 Date 06/13/2014 (c) Hewlett-Packard Company, 2014
Firmware Revision = 1.28 Device type = iLO 3 Driver name = hpilo
Management Processor configuration is successfully written to file "ilo.xml"

try version=1.70
I've not tried 1.80 myself

I'm doing 1.80 downloaded manually

feeding it the .scexe or the .bin?
actually, version=latest will only pick up .bin's

scexe

1:44 PM
What does everyone like for Exchange spam filtering, either cloud or local? I'm using Forefront 2010, which was working great, but lately has been letting tons through. (We use it as part of our MSDN sub). I'm looking to swap to something on site or cloud based, about 50 users.

@ewwhite needs a fairly recent version of hpilo_cli

@DanBig I use Barracuda appliances and Cloud filtering.
@DennisKaarsemaker oh, I'm just running the app

@DanBig o365 here. used to do postini

but these servers are subscribed to your repo

i loved postini, when that went away, i migrated a customer to mcafee saas
thats one of my considerations right now

1:46 PM
@DanBig also, MSDN is NOT internal-use licensing... !

@DennisKaarsemaker fixed.
[root@Military ~]# hpilo_cli -P local localhost update_rib_firmware version=latest
>>> print(my_ilo.update_rib_firmware(version="latest"))
Already up-to-date

@MichelZ, im aware
another reason we are switching

@DanBig they went away? it's just google now, but they still offer the service, don't they?

postini changed to google apps for biz, you can no longer subscribe to just spam filtering

@DanBig ah
effing google

1:56 PM
@DanBig Ugh, fuck the cloud. We have a cloud-based service, and if we want a custom rule, we have to call up tech support and have them make it (and hope they don't fuck it up). My vote goes to the Barracuda appliances.

@HopelessN00b, which cloud based do you use?
