What all smartphones (apart from Blackberry, but we're averse to them after previous experience) seem to lack atm. is enterprise management apart from ActiveSync/Exchange.
@MarkHenderson Teacher fail.
correct answer: 2x + c, where x+c = 10
(c is constant setup time regardless of number of cuts)

@Andrew Interestingly, there is a pretty neat product we are trialling called Meraki to manage a fleet of iOS and Android tablets
Apple's always sort of had it, but it was incredibly difficult to use it as Apple only provided an API, and no interface to it, and all the interfaces were insanely expensive or proprietary
I do not like the idea of having cloud managed switches, because if Meraki ever go bust or your switch loses its gateway or its internet you can't do jack shit to it
But for a 3rd party non-critical management tool - i can buy into that
Plus I want all switches to look that good
They're also incredibly expensive ($2799 US for a gigabit PoE switch, which is how I originally found them. Equivalent from Netgear or HP or Dell is about $750)

@MarkHenderson we sat down with Apple & Optus at the start of 2011, the options were one of a very few expensive products (MobileIron is the only one I remember), or their API

@Andrew Yeah MobileIron are the ones we saw too

One of the questions we asked was "can you have a corporate account that owns apps" and they kind of stared blankly.
@MarkHenderson switches machined from a single block of aluminium!

@Andrew Haha. Apple do permit that - you pay I think 3-5x the normal app price but get heaps and heaps of concurrent installations (normal is 5 I think)

5:23 AM
they may not have fully developed their policy on it at that time
2 years is a long time in mobility. That's like 6 iPhone releases!

@Andrew I know! One thing you absolutally cannot deny is that Apple's computer products look exceptional. Even their xServe looked good.

@MarkHenderson oh yes, everything post-polycarbonate looks great. The weird bit is that they market themselves as a "premium" product but lack features that alternatives have.
e.g. buy a Mercedes, it costs a packet, but it has everything. Buy a Kia, get... less.
Apple products are a bit like a strange boutique roadster. Looks good, does its job, lacking in some areas that you can get on other cheaper alternatives.

Miss my old MacBook Air. :(

If Grand Designs made phones instead of houses, they'd make an iPhone every time. Bespoke, handcrafted, slightly odd, hell expensive.
@Adrian great example as a product to work forward from
the Air what inspired ultrabooks.
Look, I don't hate Apple with a "Burn the witch!" passion, I just think they could do things better, and not be so up themselves in the process.

@Andrew The interesting part of that is that Apple aren't that much more up themselves than Samsung is. but their users are just so much worse

5:36 AM
The Siri "there are no other phones" thing may have been tongue-in-cheek, but there's a scary element of truth. Google recognise that diversity is good and embrace it. Apple don't. Microsoft make 20 products all the same.

Anyway why are we talking about this again?!
Oh right it's Friday afternoon and I'm just waiting to go home

@MarkHenderson sorry, working on a broken iPhone....
brings out bad feelings.
I think abuse is down the hall.
Our relationship has developed to the point where we can talk about such things openly.
Cats & dogs, I don't know.
Anyway, if you want to talk crazy hardware vendors, try the Fritz!Box.
"You have voided the warranty by trying to telnet into it!"

@Andrew Never seen one in real life
From what I've heard I don't think I want to

@MarkHenderson we have 3 now I think, Internode were recommending them for new connections at one point

Q: Quickest way to merge snapshots in VirtualBox

Andrey RegentovI have vdi with quite a number of snapshots taken from it - say, 50 or 70 snapshots. I want to have one plain vdi with a current state. These snapshots take way too much disk space and are not needed as snapshots. I know that if I call VBoxManage clonehd thedisk.vdi thedisk-full.vdi (50-70 time...

@Andrew Oh god, 70 snapshots...

5:46 AM
@MarkHenderson clone the disk contents and start again?
Anyway, the Fritzbox web UI is not particularly intuitive. Maybe it makes more sense in the original German Klingon.

@Andrew You should try using Lancomm stuff. It's also German. They be crazy.

It's not german unless it's a GmbH.

@Andrew haha

turns out the H is capitalised.
Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung (abbreviated GmbH, in Austria also GesmbH or Ges.m.b.H.), German for "company with limited liability", is a type of legal entity very common in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other Central European countries. The name of the GmbH form emphasizes the fact that the owners (Gesellschafter, also known as members) of the entity are not personally liable for the company's debts. GmbHs are considered legal persons under German and Austrian law. Other variations include mbH (used when the term Gesellschaft is part of the company name itself), and gGmbH (...

This Lancomm thing we have, it's got two ISDN ports, a POTS port for ADSL2 and four LAN ports. It's got a built in SIP trunking thingo and all sorts of really really odd options for CPE. It can route SIP calls to the ISDN lines and all sorts of wonderful things

5:51 AM
Break it open and see if it has the German phone plugs on the PCB - the Fritzbox does. Also a crazy Y-lead into modular connector for ADSL & filtered PSTN.
I think it has 2 PSTN ports, 1 SIP port, and DECT antenna built-in
ISDN ports!?! what connector?

@Andrew RJ11
I think

ok, so ISDN over copper
oh yes, apparently Germany is big on ISDN
last time we checked, Telstra are keen on doing all new ISDN installs as fibre. More stuff to sell back to the NBN I suppose.

@Andrew last time I saw an ISDN was in '05 which was an E1 that was broken apart into half voice half data
And that was ebcause thats what their Commander phone system supported. God I hated that phone system.

6:14 AM
ah yes, the PDH
pleisosynchronous, my favourite new word of 2008

G'day

@MarkHenderson so 20-something lines? that's quite a few
and 1Mb synchronous data...

@Andrew I use it as a timezone neutral greeting - it's better than good ($timeOfDay) etc :)

@Andrew It was a small call center

@MarkHenderson I read that as "small can center"

6:29 AM
Well it's home time and thus the weekend
See all you fuckers on Monday I guess

6:48 AM
@Andrew In "Iron Man 3" Tony Stark tells a TV outside-broadcasting van tech to "increase the ISDNs" to get more bandwidth - awww...bless

@Andrew same with Norway

Morning

7:23 AM
www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkDD03yeLnU‎
@Chopper3 awww, screenwriters throwing around random tech words

7:34 AM
@MarkHenderson enjoy the weekend, convict.

@MarkHenderson Not here, sunshine. Bank holiday monday for us brits ;)

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Morning
Thank fuck its Friday AND a bank holiday.
2

@RobM awww yiisss.

I've already been yelled at for doing my job by my wank-hammer of a boss, so fuck everything about this place. I'm out of here at lunch for an opticians appointment and it won't be a second too soon.

All you lazy fucks and your bank holidays :(

7:45 AM
Good morning

Boo to you!

@DennisKaarsemaker you can take over my bank holidays if you can take over my boss and his crazy shit.
morning @faker

@DennisKaarsemaker didn't you just have Queens day ?

Morning faker, rob etc

@Iain ssst. Just let me be a hypocrite already, will you :P

7:47 AM
The Gang's all here. Morning @JennyD

@DennisKaarsemaker I only know this as friends go over for it every year

It's a lovely day here. A nice long weekend beckons and that's just what we want. Perfect cycling weather @iain?

@Iain remind them that it's on a different date as of next year
and it's king's day then

@RobM It's a bit dull here today but the weekend is set fair and dry, have a 80 miler planned for Monday morning, horse riding this afternoon and pottering in the Garden the rest of the time
@DennisKaarsemaker I heard them talking about it

sounds lovely

7:53 AM
I'll be spending the weekend looking at houses that we probably won't buy and playing with my horse

Why not look at houses you will buy?

The plan is to move to a house in maybe three years from now. But there are two that came on the market and are open for looking at this weekend that seem like just what we want. If we're lucky there's something really wrong with them both so we won't have to make a decision now :-)

Ahhh that makes sense.
And they look nice. Er but not nice enough to buy.... you should totally wait

Thanks :-)

I'm thinking of making an offer on this one: funda.nl/koop/wervershoof/huis-47208678-neuvel-6/fotos/#foto-4
it has a pool, jacuzzi and sauna :)

8:05 AM
The yellow one looks best, but it's a bit farther out and more yearly costs, plus I'd want to turn one of the upstairs bedroom into a big bathroom with a tub. The red one is better placed but smaller, though it already has an actual bathroom. So we'll see.

I like that one @DennisKaarsemaker

@DennisKaarsemaker Looks really nice

In all seriousness, house buying is supposed to be one of the biggest stresses that people undertake, so its worth being sure about it before you even start, huh

I'm not really interested in a pool, but a bathtub is non-negotiable. I want to have a hot bath when I come home freezing after a winter horse ride...

It's a bit far from work though, would increase my commute from 90 to 110-120 minutes :(

8:07 AM
@RobM Yep. That's why we're going into it with the intention to just look and not buy.

at ~10kr to £ they look quite cheap by UK prices

@DennisKaarsemaker On the ones we're looking at, the yellow one would increase commute from 50 to 65 minutes, the red one is marginally farther away

@RobM heh. The house we bought a few years ago was on the market all of four hours before we snatched it up :)
@JennyD that's doable

@Iain They're both 45-55 kms outside of Stockholm, that's why they're so cheap

I plan on leaving this hose in a box

8:08 AM
Damn. Scan are precise with their orders. Your order from Scan Computers is out for delivery today by Trevor your DPD driver and is due to be delivered between 09:41-10:41

if they were even 10 kms closer the trains would be more frequent and the price increase by at least 20 %

8:19 AM
@tombull89 scan are pretty good

@RobM Did used eBuyer quite a lot but have moved to Novatech and Scan for the things Novatech don't have (or do cheaper). Novatech have a store near me (30 minutes drive) so it's nice to get internet prices at a store.

The following guest operating system releases that are no longer supported by their respective operating system vendors are deprecated. Future vSphere releases will not support these guest operating systems, although vSphere 5.1 Update 1 does support them.

Windows NT
@Cole UH-OH!

@tombull89 ebuyer annoyed me a while ago. Mostly I use Scan and Amazon now...

Dan
Holy hell, I don't do stressed generally but it's taken me over 2 hours to do a 1 hour commute to work this morning and I feel like I could punch an elephant

@Dan Three words. Bank. Holiday. Monday.

8:26 AM
@dan yikes that's not good. It's Friday. And also what @tombull89 said.

Dan
Good point, both. Breathes

Q: Machine in read-only mode, do I really need to restart?

c0dem4gneticIn a combination of SAN controller failover and loss of power, several of our machines ended up in read-only mode. After restoring from the failover, I restarted all machines. This got me thinking if it was really necessary. How can/sho I recover a machine from being in read-only?

Anyone know what he means?

Dan
8:48 AM
I gotta get in the zone

Hey guys, yesterday I asked a question on SF about TCP packets, I solved one issue about it with your help, but now another issue pops up. I asked a new question on SO (I was told that was the better place). But could someone familiar with TCP on byte-level please take a look?

user61389
1
Q: What's wrong with this TCP reply?

Camil StapsI'm building a server with the ENC28J60 chip and a PIC18F4620. The chip is connected to my PC via ethernet. Currently, I'm trying to set up the TCP connection over which I'll build an HTTP connection later on. I have never worked with TCP before. I'm implementing TCP on the embedded device only,...

@CamilStaps capture this: nc google.com 80
and compare that with your connection
going by specs is good, having a real-life example to compare with is better.

user61389
@DennisKaarsemaker you mean entering nc google.com 80 in the command prompt, right?

Dan
I can't help you, but that's a hell of a project

user61389
Ah I can't capture from my wireless connection... wait a moment

9:23 AM
@CamilStaps yeah, and capturing the tcp connection setup with wireshark or something
you can, tcpdump -i wlan0 :)
or -i ANY

user61389
Wait, you're using linux commands, aren't you?

user61389
I'm on windows, is there something similar?

@CamilStaps wireshark

user61389
@Iain for nc I mean

oh, sorry, didn't read your question very thoroughly :)
just browse to google.com
and ignore all but the first few packets

user61389
9:26 AM
That I can on windows :)

user61389
I send a SYN, Google replies with SYN+ACK, and I send ACK - that's how the wiki says it should be as well

user61389
I added the first packets of the stream with google to the question. I don't see differences in how the acknowledgement number is handled, nor in the flags. The window size is different, would that matter? Also google's bytes after the window size are different from mine, those are options - could that be an issue?

10:36 AM
Anyone know how to configure kerberos not to ask for Administrator@DOMAIN password when running kinit -k ?
oh nevermind
1
A: How to automate kinit process to obtain TGT for Kerberos?

tore-Stupid me: echo "password" | kinit aduser@REALM

@WesleyDavid You can have the Thumper! $$

11:36 AM
@pauska Another V N X blew up.

12:21 PM
@ewwhite 1-line patch to mkfs seems to make my problem go away. Repeat testing now to confirm.

12:32 PM
@ewwhite same software version?

Yep.
Two in one day!
@dennis what did you change?

I lobotomized its swidth/sunit detection

@CamilStaps Above my pay grade but see if this will help you with understanding window sizes. tcpipguide.com/free/…

Hmm and did you ever use my mkfs parameters?

user61389
@Travis but but but ... that involves reading! I'm now reading it, thanks in advance :)

12:44 PM
@ewwhite yeah, those didn't help. mkfs.xfs is stubborn

Dan
Putting the page file on a different partition, but on the same vmdk file on a virtual machine. rageface

@CamilStaps I know lol! What's a readme file ;) Good luck with your project though. Sounds really neat!

user61389
@Travis thanks man :)

user61389
:9260869 I didn't look at the HTTP/HTTPS packets, just the very few first packets in which the TCP connection is established

@CamilStaps Oh :) I'm playing with mine. You got my curiosity up

user61389
12:54 PM
@Travis don't play too much! This is giving me a headache ;)

Q: Heterogeneous environment "roaming" profiles

Tom O'ConnorBy "roaming profiles" I really mean "shared home directories". So, I set up an AD pair, and shared a folder on \\ad-1\homes. Then set the AD user object to mount H:\ = \\ad-1\homes\%username%. This works fine on Windows (as you'd expect). I also configured Folder Redirection on a GPO on the U...

HALP MEEEE

@CamilStaps I get a SYN, SYN/ACK, ACK sequence. Looks like yours is doing a S, S/A, S sequence intead

user61389
@Travis yes indeed. So there must be something wrong with the second packet (S/A) so that the PC doesn't reply with an ACK but starts a new connection instead

@CamilStaps sequence number?

@CamilStaps I didn't read your second set of packets which shows the correct sequence :)

user61389
1:00 PM
But I can't figure out what's wrong with the second packet. The flags are correct as is the acknowledgement number. Perhaps it's something with SACK_PERM? The google packet has that enabled, mine doesn't, but I don't know if that changes stuff?

user61389
@TomO'Connor the acknowledgement number of the second packet is correct (sequence number of the first + 1), the sequence number of the second packet is a random value, so that's always correct

@CamilStaps Sequence number on the 2nd PC's packet isn't incremented by 1.

user61389
@Travis correct, the question is why. I'm not writing the PC software, I'm writing the embedded software. The PC software works, so there must be something wrong with the second packet that makes the PC doesn't want to reply with an ACK

GODDAMNIT I CAN'T BEAT @EVANANDERSON AT ANYTHING!
7
(Congrats!!)

@CamilStaps I'll step out of it :) lol. I don't know what I'm talking about.

user61389
1:06 PM
@Travis so don't I lol, thanks anyway :)

haha

@CamilStaps Why do you have the NS (Nonce) flag set in your SYN-ACKs?

user61389
@ChrisS according to wireshark I haven't, let me check

From your post: 0020 00 01 00 50 0c 0d 00 00 00 01 88 ab 7e 19 70 12
70 == 0111 0000
The 4th bit is the NC flag

user61389
The flags are 0x7012, when I highlight that with wireshark it says only SYN and ACK are set - but I follow your rationale

1:10 PM
@MDMarra you know how babies are made right? You can do that too!

@CamilStaps I suspect you mean for 70 to be e0, since it's common to set the high 3 bits (reserved flags)
It's been a long morning already and it's only quarter after nine.... =/

user61389
@ChrisS I think so too, wireshark must be mistaken, now checking my code...

user61389

@CamilStaps Bug report time!

user61389
@ChrisS no wait the 7 isn't for the flags themselves right? The flags only use 12 bits

1:13 PM

Q: How do I move static IP address from one ISP to another

CharlesWe have a linux server pointing to a static IP address from one major ISP. We recently changed that ISP to a new ISP and I am wondering if there is a way we can move the static IP address to work through the new ISP. Is it even possible to move static IP address from ISP to another?

user61389
So the flags are 0x012 and 7 is some magic number, not?

Couldn't even imagine a world where IP porting was allowed...lol.

There's 12 bits for flags, yes. But 0x7 = 0111, the first three are reserved, so that last one is a flag.

user61389
@ChrisS according to wireshark the flags are 0x012, not 0x701, so then the flags are 0b 0000 0001 0020, which is only SYN+ACK

maybe I should go back to bed

user61389
1:16 PM
Isn't the 7 for header length? (here 28)

user61389
haha

@ewwhite I remember a previous bug where the SP would crash after X number of days.. that was specifically with iSCSI, but maybe it happens with FC as well..

user61389
I have to leave for a while anyway, just ping me if you have any ideas / questions :)

A: How do I move static IP address from one ISP to another

Tom O'ConnorUnless you own the IP address block it's in, and it's in Provider Independent (PI) Space, then you might be able to switch transit providers, and announce your routes over your new BGP sessions with your new ISP, then it might be possible. Given the lack of networking knowledge show in the OP's ...

Well, nearly.

@TomO'Connor that sounds a lot less like "you don't know what the fuck you're doing 'eh" than the answer I was writing :)

1:23 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker Thing is.. there are circumstances where you can "move" IP addresses between ISPs. OP's instance isn't one of them.

Yeah I know

I'll bet money they've got the IP hard coded into some application/license/customers/etc; and now the world's on fire because they moved ISPs.

@ChrisS heh.

We're just about to move our PI space from verizon to a multihomed cogent/level3/verizon/linx peering setup.

@TomO'Connor Have you pam_mount available?

1:26 PM
@jscott Probably.

@TomO'Connor I had no idea you could "reply" to messages here Tom...(now to figure out how you guys are B/i/U/formatting posts here). #chatbadge

@TheCleaner If you figure out how markdown really works in chat, please let the SE folks know.

@DennisKaarsemaker Very cool stuff - wish I was involved with something like that.

@ChrisS we have vacancies :-)

@MDMarra - Too funny. Congratulations on your marriage.

^Weeeeeeeeeeeeee!

@EvanAnderson Congratulations on the release of your latest project.

@EvanAnderson Congrats! I spotted your addition to your SF profile :P

@EvanAnderson - did you name her GINA? ;)

@Chopper3 - Glad to hear your treatment is done. I didn't realize it was cancer you were fighting-- I'm hopeful you've beaten it!
@TomO'Connor - I was only a minor contributor on the project. I contributed a little bit of code but my wife managed the entire build and delivery process.
8

1:38 PM
@EvanAnderson but you now both get to maintain the project and plan project 2.0 :)

@EvanAnderson Thank goodness Continuous Delivery isn't widely supported.

@tombull89 - 'cuz, ya' know, what's a better thing to do than play Server Fault while your wife sleeps? >smile<

@DennisKaarsemaker 18 year LTS programme.

@TomO'Connor - Yep. We're in long-term maintenance mode now.

@EvanAnderson It's a game?

1:39 PM
@TomO'Connor if you're lucky and they don't stay at home until 40 :)

@TomO'Connor 18? It's a daughter, remember?

@tombull89 Need to hope that mdmarra has a son, and.. yeah.
dat gene pool.

@TheCleaner - Alas, no-- GINA is deprecated in newer versions. >smile<
Baby is back is from the pediatrician, so I'm gonna go. I just HAD to respond to @MDMarra, though. Thanks for all the kind words, guys.

Glad you understood the reference...didn't get to edit it before someone thought I was being perverted.

1:46 PM
@Travis, hey had success at long last and wanted to see if you or TheCleaner wanted to take the opportunity to answer the question I had posted....i'm guessing its poor form to answer your own question?

For fun

ok, i see he's gone now, question to the general audience: is it poor form to answer your own question?

@Clickinaway Nope. It's encouraged.

@tombull89 OK, thanks. I'm just very grateful for Serverfault i'm not able to contribute much here, but I do what I can on GIS stack exchange: serverfault has been a gold mine for me

@Clickinaway - yeah definintely if you figured it out post as the answer and accept it.

1:55 PM
Some people on other sites might call you out on it and bitch, but it's fully OK.
Although if you self-answer a questions with "how do I open task manager" or something equally as simple expect to be shat on.

@Clickinaway Posting a correct answer is always encouraged. Doesn't matter if you're answering your own question, stealing the Answer from a Comment, or whatever. Attribution required if you got it from somewhere else...

2:12 PM
@Clickinaway Pretty sure a third of my SU rep is from self answers :P

Anyone here with AS400 skillz?

@MikeyB It took years of therapy (alcohol) to erase those memories from my brain

Dan
@MikeyB Sorry, this chat room is situated in 2013. Have you tried History.SE?
3

@Dan I still have an MVS book kicking around here remember

@MikeyB No, but I can drag a friend in probably who does have AS400 skillz.
or tell you which ircd to find him on

2:26 PM
Someone I know is putting out feelers for someone with some "pretty high-end AS/400 skills & experience".
They're looking for migration support over a couple of years as they move to Microsoft AX.

2:43 PM
@MikeyB Based where?

@TomO'Connor Client is in Ontario, Canada (I think)… remote work may be acceptable. Not sure.

@MikeyB I'll mention it to my friend.

FISH!

@TomO'Connor thx

@MikeyB do you need regular skillz or mad skillz?

2:45 PM
@voretaq7 Mad skillz I think. Really it's just feelers at the moment.
(I realize the risk I'm taking whipping out my feelers in this room)
5

@MikeyB hmmm... high-end AS/400 skillz... I know a few guys. If remote work is acceptable let me know and I'll ping them :)

@MikeyB 'Scuse me while I whip this out.

@tombull89 I've got a four day weekend. GTFO.

@Dan I've...got the whole summer break off, minus two days?

Dan
@tombull89 Never liked you much, anyway.
(It looks like I'm going to working away Mon - Friday until the day before I get married!)

@Dan With any luck by the time we get there I'll be upgraded to Full Time, All year round (rather than Full Time, Term time only).

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, term time only seems to be dying a death. It's great for the hols, but pro-rata pay is a killer

2:55 PM
Dying a death

nod I think me and my boss are the only term-time-only IT staff in the area.

term time only?

@jscott pam_mount is nearly working.

Yes - we don't work during the school holidays.

:D
Wait 2 days, and I'll give you a bonus for that answer

2:57 PM
Benefits: Lots of time off (easter, summer, christmas). Cons: Less pay, less time to do stuff.

Ah! My neighbor's a teacher. She really enjoys having her summers off.
If the pay were adequate, I'd definitely do that. Ride motorcycles for a couple months and then work while it's raining? Sign me up. But here in the States, the pay absolutely stinks.
